I hope you guys enjoy this review of Nates (5SG BABY) custom Snowblind build that he did in his garage using an old discarded LCD screen he found in the dumpster (bin). Out of all the PC's at PDXLAN (over 800 in total) this was the one that really pulled me in because it was so dynamic and actually had real uses like showing telemetry, etc. Plus, I was shocked at how many people would randomly stop and ask "How did you do that?" so I figured it would make a fantastic video to captivate you DIY creatures into recycling one of your old screens that no longer has any business being a display in your multiple monitor setup and instead make it functional again as case candy. ECashsociety TechTalks honestly making it touch screen would be pretty trivial. Easiest way would be just to add a USB motion tracker like from Magic Leap and it would turn the whole side of the case into a multitouch surface, you could put on 3D printed buttons, etc that are fired when touched without them being connected to anything. I should just do a video on it. Go back to making weird stuff like I used to.
Barnacules Nerdgasm I would love to see you do that. Your Epic 3 50 inch setup nearly inspired me to do the same in my own home. I bought two 50 inch monitors then sort of gave up on the project though I wish I hadn’t. I also bought a product called the airbar to see about adding touch capabilities to my snowblind in the hopes that I could modify it somehow. I am sure you have heard of this device showcased on Unbox Therapy some years ago. I’d love to hear a recommendation for a USB device to do this with my snowblind. Sadly the airbar I picked up was DOA. I tested it on three different laptops then finally returned it. I also looked into something called touchfoil. Damn, now I have to search my attic for an old crappy LCD panel to cannibalize and play with. I've seen these before and although I thought they where a really clever idea they just didn't impress me. However the way this has been implemented using the white inside the case and the screen to blank areas out rather than be a semi transparent display, this really works. 10/10 for implementation and 10/10 for DIY :-)
I've been thinking about doing this, I'm glad it can work. I've been hesitant because I don't want to to hack up a monitor for a project that would fail.
As someone who used to case mod in the early 00s for fun and for profit....that is an insanely great idea with perfect execution. At the first view of the plain clean white inside I thought that was just a rendering being shown on the screen and that it wasn't see through at all. Sickkk, up there with the Macro Black and the Orac 3 for sure!
I did this mod with my computer went through 2 panels because first one broke and only bottom third worked, but the second one worked beautifully. Got them for free so who cares. One thing to note for anyone who is thinking of doing this, ONLY DO THIS IF YOU HAVE A WHITE CASE and ideally white components because it does not work as good for black case and components as it does with white all over the inside. There is a lot of light absorption from the black so the screen wont be as bright and vibrant. Also doesn't work during the day. I did this back in 2001 but it wasn't as nice as this. I used three 7" black and white lcd panels with ridiculously expensive lcd controllers. Back then colored lcd monitors were really expenisve and old school crt monitors were the norm. I ended up putting the project on the side and never got around to finishing it completely. I've still got pictures of the crazy pc mod I was putting the lcds in but none of the pics show the lcds. I removed them when I was finishing up the case for a modding contest in which I didn't even finish modding but still won the contest either way. Maybe one day I'll make a slideshow video showing off the case. It had mods which I still haven't seen anyone else attempt till this day.
I actually wanted to do this in my bedroom window for a while but that's effort. I get headaches really easily and the outside light never helps so I wanted this to tint the window a little and make it less intense and also to 'turn off' the window like curtains but a lot better.
Strangely My Comments Usually Get Quite Popular what a great idea! The screen however might not let in a lot of light even when blank. But would be epic to show the weather ;)

@@Barnacules Just knew little to nothing about electronics. Basically, I found the lead wires that powered the LCD and it almost always came down to 2 wires, the red 5v and black ground wire (I tried this with 3 or 4 panels, lol) Once I found the leads, I tried soldering them to another 5v cable such as a USB power cable. I was inspired to try this method by watching some other people's guides who seem to have got it to work. Mine just ended up with a dead monitor control board every time :P TLDR: I just couldn't figure out how to properly power the monitor heh..
That is super cool. I've been working on (in my head) a little project that is the small LCD screen in the front of the case we like he had so I can show stats. But he took it to a higher level with the touchscreen. I'm guessing that's a screen that I see being used on Raspberry Pies. Anyway I would love to see you get into this I think it would be a great addition/project to your channel. Great vid!
Have to agree that’s one of the coolest PC mods I have ever seen. Not sure that I could cope with an all white interior but that’s just me. Well done to the guy that put this together, I thought I was cool with my Silverstone LC16M all them years ago 😂😂
Hlspwns World LoL your still ballin man, I’d love a htpc build for landing. Packing this build from the parking lot to the table is a major pain. Thing weighs like 75lbs
I would use a Rasp Pi to drive the display. That way the displays can be "canned" you could control and send extra data over serial or ip that way you don't deal with "loosing your cursor"
The Pi is good for some projects, but I don't think losing the cursor is so bad that it has to change the way this project was done. Plus, the Pi's ARM might cause somewhat significant delay in printing stats to the display.
I have the touchscreen he has but I have it inside my PC below my GPU, running rainmeter and HWinfo at 640p to display my system and hardware stats in real-time results in basically zero system useage, and my mouse only goes over there when I want it to. I have a video of it on my channel playing the new DOOM game. I'd eventually love to find a bigger display and better mounting process, my old case I had it bolted to the acryllic window and it fit the spot it was in perfectly, inside the P300s TG it just sits there and looks tiny lol.
Hey Jerry, love ALL your content, dude. Of all the RUclipsrs out there, you're one of the very few with genuine intellect. Oh, and fuck-funny, to boot :). Keep up the great work - really entertaining, informative and worthwhile stuff.
Reminds me of when people would put TV's in the back of the headrests in the backseats of the cars lol. I can appreciate it for the creativity and talent that went into it however.
TheRailroad99 yeah boy gotta pay bills lol. I may upgrade If ryzen really relaxes 5ghz 8 core chips. Then I can run multiple monitors in their own virtual machine.
ok for real i always thought it would be cool to use lcd technology in regular house windows, you could integrate them into a smart home system and literally dim them, change the hue of light, display information and all sorts of stuff.
yah i can imagine it would be hard to get lcd technology that could handle direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time, also intense UV and heat may explain why there is no color option yet
glad to see you doing better remember ignore the haters you are amazing at what you do hope you have a good thanksgiving with you and your family be safe :)
@@Barnacules yeah, it was just before its time. It actually gave me an idea for a mITX scratch built case where 4 sides had windows made from IPad retina screens but I just never followed through with it since it was ridiculously expensive and the horsepower would be insane to run it. I still want to do it someday.
You can use nearly any screen. You can get power supplies and control boards for nearly any monitor on Ebay. You can take an outdated monitor and add HDMI to it.
Oh I _so_ hope a touch layer is possible to include on this. Being able to touch the display for interacting with it would certainly make stat tracking and stat changing interesting.
so glad i stumbled across this vid outta nowhere this is cool and i like the touch screen for extra stuff like discord that was something i need to do. hosently i have only seen you from jay's channel but after this i am hooked and subbed lol
Retty slick. Reminds me of a case I made using a touchscreen from a busted point of sale terminal back in 2004. Ran off the dvi out and powdered with a paper shredder power supply. Mounted the touchscreen and display inside the side of a massive tower. Fun but sketch as hell.
I was gonna do this with some old monitors I had laying around but the project got put on hold and I ended up recycling all of them. Eventually I'm gonna do something like this though, LCD side panels are always awesome!
Matthew Morden custom cases are all the rage this year. I should make one also since I have the CNC machine to cut the acrylic. Would be neat to document the process end to end. I know it’s not trivial to design and build a case.
@@Barnacules true, but you could build a huge case that's taller than the full tower cases out their and put a huge 30" hologram screen on side, and plus you would be able to put lots of white led lighting in the huge case.

But he took it to a higher level with the touchscreen. I'm guessing that's a screen that I see being used on Raspberry Pies. Anyway I would love to see you get into this I think it would be a great addition/project to your channel. Great vid!
Greg NY using a pie is a great idea! These screens are just extended desktops in windows. Makes playing full screen games a pain.
Love that Jerry thanks even my son was impressed
Have to agree that’s one of the coolest PC mods I have ever seen. Not sure that I could cope with an all white interior but that’s just me. Well done to the guy that put this together, I thought I was cool with my Silverstone LC16M all them years ago 😂😂
Hlspwns World LoL your still ballin man, I’d love a htpc build for landing. Packing this build from the parking lot to the table is a major pain. Thing weighs like 75lbs
I TELL YOU....i love thoses vids. i remember my first video of you was the gaming chair you tried in a LAN and i like that kind of things alot!
that's AWESOME bro, I went ahead and found the desktop graphic you use on your laptop and i'm using it now, it looks great on this 32" TV
I'd eventually love to find a bigger display and better mounting process, my old case I had it bolted to the acryllic window and it fit the spot it was in perfectly, inside the P300s TG it just sits there and looks tiny lol.
just lock the mouse to 1 screen so you wont loose your cursor or make it a dual key press to switch screens easy fixes
I like how he still uses the 2600K. Sandy Bridge FTW, I still use a 3930K in my main gaming rig. Those are just awesome!
TheRailroad99 he focuses on what makes him happy.
TheRailroad99 yeah boy gotta pay bills lol. I may upgrade If ryzen really relaxes 5ghz 8 core chips. Then I can run multiple monitors in their own virtual machine.
I'm totally going to try this with an old laptop screen.
that case is insane
ok for real i always thought it would be cool to use lcd technology in regular house windows, you could integrate them into a smart home system and literally dim them, change the hue of light, display information and all sorts of stuff.
minton brunkhorst I’ve seen this before in modern homes, but those LCDS just do solid black and white.
yah i can imagine it would be hard to get lcd technology that could handle direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time, also intense UV and heat may explain why there is no color option yet
I always want to see more! your videos are EPIC!
The front Touch lcd is super useful .
you could make definitely at least two great jerry rig vids out of creating the LCD mod. I would love to see your take on it
glad to see you doing better remember ignore the haters you are amazing at what you do hope you have a good thanksgiving with you and your family be safe :)
Still love this since I saw it in one of Mosquitos (from themodzoo) builds a long while back. It's on the list of things to do in the future.
Larry Kozlowski blows my mind that Mosquitos did this back in 2013 and it’s still a rare mod to see.
@@Barnacules yeah, it was just before its time. It actually gave me an idea for a mITX scratch built case where 4 sides had windows made from IPad retina screens but I just never followed through with it since it was ridiculously expensive and the horsepower would be insane to run it. I still want to do it someday.
I just like seeing your face on my feed man. Love your style. Feel better dude.
I was in a Wolfenstein Enemy Territory Clan called 5SG like 7 years ago... It couldn't be the same people... Could it....?
Do it Jerry. I would love to see the content in your style.
Damn thats one bad ass rig! Awesome video man
I was discussing this last year. I have a 17' laptop and HP palm pilot screen I plan to put in my case. I have to check out your build log.
DOOOOO ITTTTTT
You can use nearly any screen. You can get power supplies and control boards for nearly any monitor on Ebay. You can take an outdated monitor and add HDMI to it.
It's crazy how easy this is, the hardest part for me was powering the screen. Mind you the screen I had was from an old promotional display
I just love seeing your videos. So anything.
Oh I _so_ hope a touch layer is possible to include on this. Being able to touch the display for interacting with it would certainly make stat tracking and stat changing interesting.
I can't wait to see you do this! ( I didn't know I could use the built in gpu to drive other screens simultaneously... )
Barnacuels gonna do this next year 😏
Yeessss. Tech videos again. Keep up the great work
that is straight 'sick' yo... good to see you on the mend.
I now know what a screen can do....display whatever you want.... jokes aside this guys pc is awsome!
Now that is impressive.
That is Absolutely Brilliant!
This guy sat behind me at the last springLAN! so cool!
so glad i stumbled across this vid outta nowhere this is cool and i like the touch screen for extra stuff like discord that was something i need to do. hosently i have only seen you from jay's channel but after this i am hooked and subbed lol
Retty slick. Reminds me of a case I made using a touchscreen from a busted point of sale terminal back in 2004. Ran off the dvi out and powdered with a paper shredder power supply. Mounted the touchscreen and display inside the side of a massive tower. Fun but sketch as hell.
Sketch is where it all starts man! If you have any pics of it tag me on Twitter @barnacules
@@Barnacules I think I have a pic, but it's been 14 years, so no promises.
Woah baby, thanks so much for this gaming pc mod. Wow I want to do this!
awww that's fantastic, hope one day will be mainstream to have an lcd as panel cause it's sooooo goooood
also, what keyboard is he using?
Yep, very cheap, very easy. Did this to my Define R6. Looks amazing.
this is one sweet case, but I need easy instructions for how to do this, because the links you provided just made my brain go to sleep
The build log actually wasn't too bad, try watching the RUclips video series linked below it.
I was gonna do this with some old monitors I had laying around but the project got put on hold and I ended up recycling all of them.
Eventually I'm gonna do something like this though, LCD side panels are always awesome!
Next gen Hologram right here!! Need to do this but how?? Would build my own custom case from scratch.
YEWWWW! Barnacules is back!!!
That is pretty damn cool, and I may end up taking a shot at this, since I have a case I modded many years ago and a few old LCD monitors.
1:51 who tf is just googling cranes?! xD
Isn't this pretty old? Surprising it's so rare that people do this
Not sure. Glad to see he's still using a z77 mobo.
Looking forward to the future Jerry-rigged episode where you do this!
I have an old 15" VGA monitor that is just gathering dust. I may cut up one of my old freebie cases and try to make one. Repurposing an old business case is recycling at it's best!
That will work perfectly! That is exactly what Nate used.
So basically without the crazy amount of light, it's like trying to play on the original Game Boy Advance?
thats absolutely sick
That's really badass. First time I saw something like that, it was something shown at pax. Watched a video of a video side panel from Gamers Nexus. Really cool but not as crazy as this mod. Kickass!
Let’s see you do this, Jerry!
