  • Join me in today's video where I blast some nasty Spider mites and re-pot a few of my calatheas and marantas. I show you how I eradicate spider mites. My idea of doing this video was to show you a real plant parent's struggle to keep up with not only watering, but taking care of plants to keep them aesthetically pleasing (nice to look at). Sometimes, we have to intervene and prune, re-pot, and go in a find a different approach to plant care when our plants aren't looking their best or thriving.
I had a lot of fun making this video, and I hope you enjoy it!

What I absolutely LOVE about you is your light hearted approach to plants. You don’t seem to freak out with pests you just do what needs done and I find that so calming. You make this all fun and not so serious. Thank you 🙏🏻😊

I completely cheered when you planted them together, it really works. I had a spider mite infestation in my Calathea and I totally went full warfare on it and I sprayed it down with Canna Cure and chopped most of it down and then I bought a new one and planted them together (to preserve humidity) and now I have a bigger fuller and prettier plant. ;)

I love videos like this where everything is demonstrated. Love love love! Also, I watched a video by Summer Rayne Oakes and learned I can put my moisture loving plants in Terra cotta pots in a mounded pebble tray. Water the pebbles up to wear it mounds. And through capillary action, the Terra cotta will absorb the water and the roots will take what it needs from there and the wet soil. Then all you have to do is water the pebble tray. I also keep all my prayer plants in one are.

My Calathea has been sick for quite a while. We are just coming out of winter and the humidity was too low for its liking. I used to use a heater in my living room where the plant was and it got really badly dehydrated. Then I’d move it to my bedroom but it didn’t get much light there. Overtime I noticed it becoming more dehydrated and even staying dehydrated regardless of how much water I gave it. The leaves were droopy , curling up and burnt etc. I was fearing root rot and that’s what happened. I have repotted my plant but by then the root rot was severe. Hopefully it is able to make it.

      Hi Ansh,
I admit, my calathea are in the care of Taylor, my daughter, who has a lot more patience for those DIVAs, hahaha. I have a few maranta that do well, but if I forget a watering, holy hokey, they wilt and crackle, and yikes! How are yours doing these days? I see your comment is about 2 months old, so sorry for just now getting back to you. Life got hectic over here for a spell. Let me know how it's going!

I only have one prayer plant in my collection, the all green maranta leuconeura. Thought I’d lost her over the winter as her leaves were browning steadily 1by1; every time I cut off a dying leaf it seemed to make the healthy ones start browning immediately 🤷‍♀️ Finally moved her to a sunny, south facing windowsill & stopped cutting off anything....she is thriving!! Lush, full & green, folding her leaves each night. Most care guides say it’s a low to medium light plant but mine only thrives in this window, go figure. I repotted her early spring and she is finally happy 💚💚
Oh, you should try Coast of Maine potting soil, it does wonders.

OOPSIE did not mean to cut that one. Been there done that on my tiny calethia after treating for spider mites too. That poor dear and struggled in my care even through I have tried so hard to do the right thing for it. I used to love Terracotta but I am now a die hard plastic pots gal. I seem to have the proper watering routine down. Almost all plants are thriving so far. Watering the front porch plants this morning and maybe a nice little spray with the Jacks Rooting hormone too while I am at it. Easy to do on the porch. And it will be hours before the filtered sun comes around on them. My new to me Homalomena I picked up yesterday has straightened up nicely. He was really reaching for the light at the store. They have their house plant gifts in the darkest space imaginable. Also gave him a re-pot as roots were coming out the bottom of the pot. Well time to get myself to work here. So far been a lazy day for me.

Hi, HAPPY PLANTING! Myself I would have liberated all 3 plants from the dirt especially if it's the dirt ffrom nursery or even if it happened on my watch with fresh dirt, and washed and sprayed from root top of leaf. They way you did it with plant in the dirt causes me to be wary that eggs are laying in the dirt. But I don't know all the specifics of those plants in your care so you did it that way. Just wanted to make that point to you. However, keep on plant'n.

Oh, you meant take them out of nursery pots...I understand now 🤣🤣🤣
Yea I should have. I'm going to do a peroxide treatment for soil to kill the eggs. Also, another viewer told me that I need to physically wipe down the leaves with alcohol and soap solution (I have in past but didn't do in video this time) I wish I had talked about that ... dang... oh well, next time. But, I will talk about that in another video about Spider Mites! Your contacts are helpful ....and I will create a new video about Eradicating Spider Mites...if you think of anything else , let me know! Thank you for watching and commenting!! 💚😍💚

Calathea…these plants are gorgeous but too high maintenance for me 🤣 I have mine and they are still alive but they don’t thrive like my other plants. I want to give them another chance but they are little divas 😂 my advice is to buy aroids for plant therapy while dealing with calathea drama. A really breath taking red emerald philodendron will be a great distraction while tending to the divas! Or a gorgeous Hoya! 🪴💕 plantluxxe.com is having a Christmas in July sale with 12 days off plants sales!

I read that spidermites and the webs are hydrophobic so just spraying them with water probably isn't doing much. Try the alcohol /dish soap/water mix and brush the tops and backs of the leaves with an old makeup brush. Then rinse and treat with the neem

    • @plantluxxe

      Hi La Shonda,
I do wash the leaves by hand...I didn't show that in this video though and now I am kicking myself for it.... unfortunately it doesn't work everytime😭. I have washed leaves 3 or 4 times by hand. I just gave so many plants, it's bound to return .... trying to get ahead of it. I honestly think the culprit that reintroduced spider mites back into that room was a few begonias I purchased at Lowes 😭💚
Anyway, I wish I would have added more to the video and not skipped past some of the other strategies I have tried. Ah well, next time! Thanks for chatting with me here and for the advice! And THANK YOU for watching my videos😊😊😊💚💚💚💚😍😍😍💚💚💚💚💚

Yes, I love this idea! Summer Rayne Oakes does this in her home too! I believe in the power of bugs! I never thought I'd say that, but it's true.
