  • Releasing into Early Access later this year, Breachway is a sleek and strategic roguelite deckbuilder that merges the fun if frantic spaceship management of 2012’s Faster Than Light with the turn-based card combat complexity of 2019’s Slay the Spire. Breachway’s publisher, Hooded Horse, was kind enough to give me an exclusive preview key of the game that shows off much more than folks will see in the Steam Next Fest demo dropping tomorrow, so let’s put it under the MEGA the microscope and see how it handles my 15-part scoring system.

"Unless you want to throw caution to the stars..."
You had "Unless you want to throw caution to the solar winds" sitting right there in front of you.
I've had this on my wishlist for some time now. I'm not sure where I first saw it, but it's definitely a game that seems like it was meant for me. It certainly has some similarities to the upcoming Earthless, which had a demo in the last Next Fest. I'm sure this one will be in my Next Fest adventure this time around.

This is why I need you to start editing my scripts! But yes, this game feels right up your alley-looking forward to your Steam Next Fest roundup video :)
Oh, and thanks for reminding me about to Earthless-I had requested a key a while back without even realizing it was a Blackbird Interactive title 😮

You did an awesome job with the soundtrack! I had motifs stuck in my head for days after only a handful of hours with the game. Looking forward to the full release :)

This game looks beautiful. I love FTL so much too. I'm even developing a space opera game inspired by it (vids under my channel).
I'm so glad I found this channel! Keep up the awesome work.

Question on your scoring system. So you give it a 3.3/5 by averaging everything, which makes sense, but we don't know if it's worth purchasing until there's a price tag. When there is a price tag, you assign it another score under "value" which effects the average. Shouldn't the "value" category have extra weight than, say "puzzles"? If the game is 60 dollars vs 15 that would make a huge difference on whether or not you purchase a game, and the value score would go from a "5" to a "1", but your overall score would still be pretty high if the game does well enough on the other categories. I like your review system, but I just thought of this while watching your video. Keep up the great work!

Hello! Great questions. I decided a long time ago to leave the scoring system entirely unweighted so as to hopefully strip as much of my personal bias away from the review as possible. The consequence of that is that the final MEGA score can over/under emphasize certain aspects of certain games. However, I like to think that the overall MEGA score is actually each review's least important score-what really matters are the individual micro scores, and I invite viewers to personally decide which of those matter and in what amount when making a purchasing decision. Value is certainly important to that, but game prices fluctuate pretty wildly so it's also the score that's most subject to change. Value is also the micrometric most tied to every other metric. By that I mean that a game could be $5, but if it's full of (for example) bad, broken puzzles that make things unfun, it's not actually a good value.
Hopefully this helps explain my methodology a bit, and thanks again for your question :)

Have you played Cobalt Core? Gameplay looks pretty similar to this (though maybe a little less complex), though its artstyle is pixel-based instead of 3D. It also has an amazing soundtrack.

I hadn't heard about Cobalt Core but just watched some gameplay and think it looks wonderful :) thanks for the recommendation!
