    So long as you guys continue to review a product by openly discussing shortcomings (whether you find them or you’ve taken note of negative forum comments) and show ways to overcome them, I’ll keep coming back for more. Example - FMS Pitt’s V2 battery retaining mod and the alternative prop option (with performance data). Congratulations on your new trade relationship, just keep the format and keep up the great work.

    Thanks for doing what you do Adam and Heidi. I think it is great that a couple of the manufacturers have reached out to you to review their products. I think they reach out because they like the way you present products and people respect your opinion, After watching you for about a year, I don't think you would sign up with anyone who wanted to tell you what to do or think. Congratulations

    Hi Adam, great stuff about reviewers and influencers. From 1985 until about 2009 when magazine reviews were the main place to see new products, I reviewed many new model items; models, motors/esc's, chargers, etc for Model Aviation, Silent Flyer, Flying Models, Model Airplane News and Fly RC. Even then we got comments about how we were getting stuff for free (and getting paid by the magazine ,slave wages, but still paid) so how could the review not be biased? I would remind the modeling public that back then, page space in a magazine was precious (and expensive) and it was more telling when a model DID NOT get reviewed than when it was. Occasionally I was sent a product that I could not say anything nice about, or found way more negatives than positives. I alerted the magazine and that item simply NEVER got reviewed. They did not send the item off to some other reviewer..... it just never showed up in the pages of any magazine. Content space is no longer a problem with RUclips. However, I am sure, if you have not already, you will run into a product that just is not worth your time. Keep up the great work, Tom

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Год назад

      Thanks Tom. Appreciate that. Yes, there is so much behind the scenes viewers/readers don't really know. The amount of work that goes into anything like this that is well done...they can't imagine. When you consider the time devoted to this...the products are not free at all. We earn them three fold. You're right, I'm sure it will happen at some point, but so far so good. The planes are so good now a days an experienced, fairly skilled modeler should be good to go in most cases. I see a lot of complaints about planes that to be honest, are just modeling to me. People are so lazy now. I saw a guy complaining on RCG about having to mechanically center a control surface. Really? Lol.

    From a guy who remembers when the only information you could get was from MAN, RCM, Flying Models, the library and others, I absolutely love RUclips for product info as well as setup info. If you have any experience in R/C, you can tell the honest reviews from the sales pitch. Personally, I think these channels saved the model industry from the depths of bankruptcy because of the interest the internet has generated. I know making these videos isn't an easy task and requires lots of time. If there is a link that compensates the channel, I use it if I choose to buy the product. Even the young teens that make a video about something they are flying have information that I was seeking.

    Well what a great video Adam, I feel what you said was honest and to the point, anyone with a RUclips channel has to stick their head up above the trench and get shot at, that's just the nature of the Beast. Adam congratulations on you're new endeavor. 👏. I have been watching you for quite some time and I subscribe to ALOT of the other influencer/reviewers whatever folks want to call them. I understand what people think and yes when you made the announcement earlier of making this video I wondered if the channel was going to be objective. I've considered my self a pretty good judge of character and the reason I come back and watch you're videos is because I can see the love and passion you have for the hobby in that I can feel it's genuine. I/we don't know the agreement/arrangement that you have with HH but I am going to suspect that you are NOT going to change to much cause of you're character in that I would go further out on a limb and say that if it did change you or you're channel to much that you would end you're relationship. I for one will keep watching and subscribed to you're channel and again congratulations Adam. Keep at it.

    Do continue to disclose how you get an aircraft, because, while I hear all your saying, I am one of those who gets suspicious when I do not know how a reviewer got his sample.

      @ModelAV8RChannel  Год назад

      Thanks very much for the kind words!
      When you see the nice black cover on the bench, that is the tell that the plane/product is from a manufacturer. We pointed that out in this video too. However, there will really not be a difference in how we approach and do a review regardless. They will all be judged based on the same criteria.
      I think part of the issue is that so many don't watch...they just judge. These reviews are long for a reason. That is the only way we can cover all the information as thoroughly as we deem necessary to do a good review. As we said in the video, we are very tactical in what we say, and how we say it. Every word is necessary to provide context, and the flying shown...the performance...always matches what is being said good or bad. In the analytics, we can see the average percentage viewed of each video. We know we have people that watch from beginning to end, but most don't. They are missing out on great information, tips, impressions, etc, but mostly...context. When you couple that fact with the fact that so many start the video with a preconceived notion it's all BS anyway because it was "free," the reviewer is at a great and unfair disadvantage before the viewer even hits play.
      One of the key reasons we did this was to hopefully get people to go into our reviews (anybody's reviews really) with an open mind, watch the whole thing so they have context, see if the words and the performance shown match, and THEN decide what you think of the review. Hopefully more people are like you and will do just that.

    Recently found your channel and you seem like a good and trustworthy person. I think it's great when someone who's putting out good videos gets a relationship that makes it easier and lets them do more. "Influencer" though I feel like refers to people who are making that persona or their social media presence the primary focus and product, a brand. This trend is why such vague and empty words like "content" and "creator" get so much play, because that content itself isn't really the driving force. The people who make RUclips their job for instance, that raises alarm bells to me. There's one channel I'm thinking of in particular and I don't think they mean to be deceptive or truly steer people wrong, but the priorities and perspective are just a little off. It does make it hard to tell though when it's such a good company like Horizon. They have their issues, but I've gotten such good customer service from them that I'm probably captured too :)

      Thanks very much! As for the other channel - That's the thing man. They may be infomercials, but...read their comment section. People adore them. They sell a ton of stuff for HH. They keep getting huge sub's, views, sales, and positive comments. Clearly they aren't burning anyone with the recommendations or all that would slow. HH does make great stuff. That has a ton to do with it. I say good for them. If what they are doing works for them...good on them. We're going to focus on what we do.

    adam best of luck to you and your channel. all i wanna say is that , yes there are many different influencers or reviewers out there. to me its like watching a simple commercial on tv. i am a firm believer that there are planes for all types and every plane is designed to fly well, no matter the company. where i think you get into trouble is when you ask a plane to do what it wasnt designed to do and therefore people have a negative view on that plane. people are going to buy what they like personally . lets say a younger pilot buys a certain plane and it doesnt fly or do what he expected. he then gets discouraged and quits the hobby. when i buy a plane, the more videos and influencers , call it what you may, i see only help me make a better decision so keep it up adam and fly high. these videos are not easy and take alot of time and are not cheap. getting compenated somewhat only makes sense for someone to do it and may there be many more

You cover a lot of great information and I got a good laugh out of the scemantics of reviewer and influencer as I have pointed out many times the same thing about assemble and build. My issue is when people review it on their maiden flight, there’s a lot of times issues that come up a month or two downs the road, or it gets better based on weather or trim for example.
    There’s a reviewer in another hobby that will do a 2m month report card as he calls it, where he either verifies or says that his thoughts have changed on the product since his original review.

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Год назад

      Fair point. We always put multiple flights on most airplanes (10 or more usually before a review). There have been a couple in the past that were borrowed NIB, so we only flew them one day (still got several flights though).
      The checkups are great. In my experience though, with quality planes it's never gotten worse for me. It may get better as I slightly refine the set up, but if I like it after 15 flights, I still do after 100.
      That said I hate when a reviewer says "this thing flies awesome" 20 seconds in to the maiden...lol.

    Congratulations on getting connected with HH. I’m sure your reviews will remain honest. It’s great that they sent you a big supply of batteries, chargers, sim etc.
    if a plane would require your level of resources and skill in order to be flown competently the majority of fliers probably shouldn’t buy it. I like to read the reviews posted by actual purchasers. If only certain people post glowingly, beware.
    Finally, do the manufactures do a quality check of products before they ship them to you or are they sending you the same things that end up in the hobby shops?

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Год назад

      Thanks! They send us off the self examples. Sealed up and fully packaged. The same stuff you order. Flying the planes "competently" and at a "high level" are two different things. Of course you don't have to have our level to fly the planes, but if a reviewer flies one and its a complete crap show...it is more than likely a skill issue not a plane issue. The main advantage of a skilled reviewer is you can see what the plane is capable of at its best, and they can help with set up expertise to get other pilots planes set up as good as they can be.

    This is a video that you definitely needed to write, but probably didn’t need to post. I mean, it’s good that you’ve put so much thought into your channel’s mission statement, but we didn’t get to see any planes fly!
    You know what you never see? (At least I haven't) is a review of an HH plane using (for example) a Radiomaster TX16 with ELRS. Maybe, fly the model in "safe mode" then swap out that Spectrum receiver for an after-market stabilizer like an Eagle A3Super4 or a Kopilot or whatever. Just seeing how one might do that would be nice. I had a devil of a time sourcing a connector to build an adapter to fit the XT30 connector on my battery so I could fly my Eratix. I still haven’t got the stabilizer working right on the FrSky S8R receiver that I’m using. I gave up because it flies great with the stabilizer mode turned off, but it would be nice to know if it just doesn’t work on this model or I’ve mucked up the configuration, or maybe my stabilizer’s busted.
    I wish you the best of luck with your channel. Its success is a win for everyone in the hobby!

    One thing I appreciate is you fly and review the planes as they come from your supplier. I enjoy watching videos of upgraded models right out of the box but that's a bit deceiving. I like seeing 👀 how the plane or EDF Jet Flys pure stock right out of the box 1st. I'd it preforms better with upgrades to fly it like you stole it :so be it . But I watch your videos to get a good honest review of what I get in the box . Thank you for that. Tell it like it is. We have been in the hobby for many many years unlike a few others. Been flying for 40 years or so. From glow planes to quadcopters, FPV drones and helicopters. Technology has come so far. I enjoy knowing your in a similar boat. Keep it real. I trust you 100%.
    I have never had a problem of any significance with an airplane that you reviewed and because of that review i went & bought it.
    I know manufacturers expect/hope for any affiliate to give their products a review that leads to sales. You do that, BUT..BUT..you do point out issues that your subscribers should be made aware of in a way that makes viewers comfortable.
    Manufacturers (in my worthless opinion) put off potential customers when an influencer is literally hyper about everything they review. They may drop subtle hints about an issue but spend all of 15 seconds talking about it..and then it’s back to everything is
    lollipops, hula-hoops and puppies regarding the item being reviewed. Those channels make me want to sail away and make my own decisions about what’s good and what isn’t.
    It’s a fine line between being honest with subscribers & keeping manufacturers satisfied.
    I believe you do both & are honest with those that trust you with their R/C flying dollars.

      Thanks very much for taking the time to write that, we appreciate it! We made this video just as we started to get sponsors in hopes of getting ahead of the folks that judge people/channels based on one single circumstance. You get free planes = you have to be a BS'er. Its a shame some see it that way, but it is what it is. To us, it isn't that hard to do an honest, helpful review. Products now a days are very good usually, and any issues are almost always solvable with a bit of minor modelling or set up. We just state the facts based on our experience with it, give a solution to any "issue" if there are any, and assume the viewer has enough sense to determine if it is for them or not based on that. That is why we always say "If (key word IF) you'd like to add one to your hangar, here are some links, thanks if you use them" rather than "you need this , you gotta get one, we have bills, buy it, etc" . I have become bolder with an occasional opinion lately...like saying the Super Timber is THE sport bush plane for me, but I do point out that is my opinion based on my skill level and preferences...not necessarily everyone. I used to fear saying something like that even though it is true because of the haters, but I've learned not to care what people that unfairly judge us think. You can't please everybody, and short of roasting everything they send us, haters assume anyone getting free stuff is a liar anyway. Again, thanks very much...we appreciate you paying close enough attention to know better.

    I guess the true answer to whether someone could trust a person who is getting something for free is whether they would honestly admit if a plane had a flaw that should definitely be disclosed. Maybe they contacted the company first and said, look, it has such and such a defect and if you guys don't change it, I won't be singing its praises.
    If they went through that I'd trust them. But then again, if we weren't privvy to the whole context and only ever saw positivity, maybe it would look a bit off, especially when a wave of others were clearly stating this hypothetical flaw.
    Honesty is the key. If it's crap. Say it's crap or refuse a review and send it back to them.

    One thing I would like to see by more reviewers do before they starting modifying rates, expos, CG etc. Give me an honest assessment on how the plane preforms using the manufactures recommendations for rates, expo, CG etc. Because in reality rates, expos, CG etc are flyer independent. Some pilots always want higher rates, rearward CG or more or less expo. This is because of their preference of style and capability. If reviewers can provide and assessment on manufactures recommendations and then state in their opinion for example the roll rate is too sluggish or too fast and may need the rates adjusted based on their preference and capability. I feel most potential buyers will not vary much from a manufactures recommendations. Future pilots would have a better idea if the manufacture hit the mark for a good flying experience using their recommendations. Then the reviewer can provide his opinion based on his flying style on what adjustments he/she made..

    • @ModelAV8RChannel
      @ModelAV8RChannel  Год назад

      I see what you're saying David. The thing is that the manual recommendation is always just a starting point for everyone. That is a set up that usually one guy that test flew it came up with. It is an established CG and control throw setting where the airplane does what was intended. The expo (and gain settings if it has a gyro) are what that particular guy at the company preferred. While a company like Horizon may have as many as 8 or10 guys fly a new plane, the set up they go with in the manual is the preferred set up of the one of those guys that is writing the manual. It's just one pilots opinion/preference. They know most experienced pilots will change it somewhat to their liking, and for the less experienced guys they know with what they suggest as a start the plane will fly successfully as intended.
      The big question is, and we cover this...what skill level pilot is the plane suited for? If a pilot really has the skill required for a plane (beyond beginner) they should be able to fly it on the manual set up, and adjust it if they prefer.
      When we make large changes in our set up, or tune a plane for a specific mission, we explain why. Other than that though it is a given that small changes are just for personal feel. The flaw in what you're asking is that how the airplane flies with the manual set up is just an opinion as well, and so are the changes each individual makes, reviewer or otherwise. You can tell what a guy thought of the suggested set up by what they change. If they add throw, it wasn't responsive and maneuverable enough, if they reduce throw or add bunch of expo, it was too responsive, etc. Basically what I'm saying is...I can tell you what I thought of the manual set up, but that doesn't mean that is how YOU would have felt about it if you flew it.
      At the end of the day you have to decide "Is this plane within my skill set to fly?" After that...you have to set it up to suit you. That may be the manual set up, it may not, but only YOU can determine that for yourself after you get stick time on it.
      All that said you may find a reviewer who's set ups really suit you, and that may become your preferred starting point. Also, I've been doing this a long time, and with some types of planes I just know where to start for me. I may not even look at the manual set up other than to see if there is some crazy misprint or error I need to share with viewers.
      Hope this helps, thanks for your thoughts!

    In terms of constructive comments…you are too nice on your planes…i think you have the skill and experience to gently test the planes up until the point of destruction. For example for a STOL plane how much abuse can the landing gear take on steep approach 3pointers? (How does that Draco landing gear compare to the Carbon-Z cub for example?) how many Gs can that F-14 take before the stabs give out? How do the airplanes behave in mid-day turbulent conditions…for those of us who dont get to fly at those beautiful golden hours that you seem to get to fly in every video?😀.

      For most of us fellow fliers, reviews add the most value when they provide information on 1) how to spend limited time and money, 2) how to make the most out of equipment we already have, 3) how to elevate our level of flying / building, and 4)pointers on good resources that we didnt know about. The sponsorship sometimes get tricky for example when one completely ignores the other options available on the market. A few things come to mind…the fantastic features and reliability of Jeti / Frsky / opentx systems, the batteries from SMC / CNL / Tattu, MSCGUY’s battery review community, HobbyEagle A3pro gyros vs. powerbox vs. smoothflite, etc. It would be rather misleading to just cover products just because they are on your desk without some basic due diligence on the conpetitive landscape. Afaik you have never recommended any turds in 69 episodes…keep it up👍🏽😀

They missed the opportunity to pay attention to a 30 minute video we spent 30 hours putting together. Shooting and re shooting sections to make sure we were exactly on point. It should be clear the way to judge a channel is to do so based on what that channel does, NOT on what other channels do, have done, or situations they may be in.
      Both these fellas chose to try and use our comment section to talk crap about others, and one of them included specific names to make sure he insulted them. That is classless. I would never go in to any other channels platform and air any dirty laundry, opinions of others, or accusations. There may be a place for that, but it's not here. If they want to do that kind of thing on their channel they can knock themselves out. I won't ever do that, and I'm not having it here.
      Finally...they both assumed things about us based on other situations...exactly what we talked about not doing. They both made it clear that for ridiculously ignorant reasons they were done with us. So I'll tell ya...if they want to be done with us over that stupid crap, I'll help them expedite that. I believe it is a natural reaction these days to be concerned about any 'influence' that comes our way. The only way to be reasonably sure that this influence is fair and objective is to have trust in the influencer. Like most of your 2.9K subs (wow, that has been shooting up ...), I have watched enough of your channel to feel that level of trust in what you say and, more importantly, to be pretty certain you didn't leave out something important, for whatever reason. I'm pretty sure your 2nd F14 review still referred to the hand launch helping device you felt forced to make because Eflite neglected to (maybe for scale reasons). You didn't just conveniently forget to mention it because the model was free. Now, if every aircraft you review in 2023 is magically perfect in all respects, well, I'll have to delete this comment 😉Your channel is building into an invaluable resource and the more aircraft you receive, the more useful it is. I want you to spend your RC budget on the stuff that you really want and see no reason why you shouldn't have all the review stuff free (anyway, it's not really free when you are taking all the necessary hours to get the video made). We must all acknowledge Scott's kind help thus far in loaning the channel so much stuff - now he won't have to and you can give everything a damn good thrashing!

I'll never mind being judged as a reviewer if that judgement is based on some actual research on us. I'm very confident in what we are doing. Well let's face it... you are basically employed by those companies. And i can promise you... you will be more apt to give positive reviews since you now have your little affiliate link. And do you suppose you will continue to employ you if you give bad reviews on their products? Congrats to you though... look forward to your 'reviews'. I appreciate you attempting to sell your channel... but let's face it, if you dog HH products you'll be done.

      Ryan you're exactly the kind of guy that needs to actually listen to whats being said in this episode. You had your mind made up before you watched it. Understand this...your comment comes across insulting. You're clearly questioning my integrity, and being a bit condescending while you're at it. So I'll respond to your points...
      We are employed, yes, but not by Horizon Hobby. That's why we can remain independent and review/fly products from other companies. Also...clearly you don't have a grasp of what "small commission" means. Our "little affiliate link" will make us a little money to offset some of the costs involved in making the content, but we're not quitting our day job there homie.
      Maybe your inclination to assume the worst of people comes from knowing what you'd do in the same situation. If you couldn't be forthright that's on you. If you could, then it takes some real arrogance to think you could, but others can't.
      Of course if we "trashed" any of these companies they'd be a heck of a lot less likely to want to send us products. There is a BIG difference in eloquently pointing out a shortcoming of a particular plane and maybe how to fix it, and outright "trashing" a company as a whole. You make it sound as if the only way to point out a minor issue is to throttle a company like a Comedy Central Roast. An idiot would, but we're a bit more mature and articulate.
      The other thing that is great, and one of the reasons we decided to become an affiliate with HH is that there are only minor issues. I've flown and had experience with their products for years. As a very experienced modeler and a higher skill pilot, the only issues we ever have are minor. We can easily get the most from a good product. Less experienced/skilled modelers may have more issues, but to be fair they have more issues with everything...not just HH products. It's more an issue with the end users capability than an issue with the products.
      The bottom line is our "reviews" will be as forthright as they always have. You may be to biased to see it, but they will be.
