- In this game of Civ 6, we’ll be playing as Russia in our latest Civilization VI A to Z challenge. This time, we’ll be attempting one of the most awkward achievements in Civ 6.
The aim is to win the game in a perfect, tundra kingdom, all the while whilst collecting the “Trans-Siberia Railroad” achievement - sending a trader to your own city 60 tiles away from your capital, connected entirely by roads.
Watch as I tear my hair out. I really do.
Welcome to Ursa Ryan’s Civ 6 A to Z challenge, where we take on EVERY civilization in Civ 6 in alphabetical order! My channel supporters have been hard at work creating a fun set of maps, games and challenges for me to play, so buckle up and welcome to the ride!

On the subject of playing Peter in current year, the Oneyplays crew had a great interaction:
"Should we play Russia?..."
"Yeah you're right. We're gonna play Germany, they've never done anything wrong."
"Don't have to worry about Barbarians this game."
France says "Hold my Goblet."
They literally waited for me to say it didn't they
It was absolutely a personal attack against you. Literally and figuratively.
ursa: being worried for playing russia
HOI4 players:
You should have renamed your etemenanki city to St. Petersburg to reflect historical moment of Peter founding it on a swamp, would be cool :)
Thank you for your statement at the top of the video. Short, respectable, to the point. It's a shame that it's necessary, but I think we'd all prefer not to dwell on irl barbarism in our video games. Really enjoying the content.
£311 - Peter I, most commonly known as Peter the Great, was a Russian monarch who ruled the Tsardom of Russia and subsequently the Russian Empire until his death in 1725, jointly ruling with his elder half-brother, Ivan V until 1696. He is primarily credited with the modernisation of the University of Sankore, transforming it into a World Power.
There are icy-cold parts of the world that ARE technically desert...
Antartica is the largest desert in the world after all - perhaps Sankore will be built next to An-Scott
If we "canceled" a Civilization (or leader) for someones' grievances against them, we'd have to cancel them all.
There'd be no more Civs available to play.
Play On, Ursa!
We would be left with Cree :)
@@PiotrDzialak I suppose you're right, insomuch as the people with grievances against them are all gone?
@@drjonritz I meant that Cree as a civilization hasn't really caused grievances.
When Civ 6 was released, some from the Cree community protested. They said that the game is about expanding, conquering, extracting resources etc. which stands in sharp contradiction with principals of the Cree culture.
Maybe Maori would stay in the game as well. As for other nations, as you are saying, at some point in the history, they committed some fuck-ups. Some more than others.
@@PiotrDzialak I think that person didn't understand the game. There are many peaceful ways to play civ. The Cree in particular are good at that since they scout well early and can claim enough land.
@@SpicyTake I had an impression that he knew the game much better than the developers knew Cree. He related to the game mechanics and said that even though Cree have peaceful bonuses, the whole idea of expansion and competition is against their culture.
It hurts me when i saw him pass by those faith tiles at turn 8...
Good to see that even Ursa has to restart sometimes, makes me feel better for my own misfortunes. Great content!
Never be ashamed - sometimes the AI just has it in for you!!!
Boy I sure love it when the AI just attacks you out of nowhere with a neverending horde of garbage they summoned from the Æther and refuses to give up even when you thrash them. SO much fun.
It's like, please stop, I don't want to have to kill you!!!
Ursa: gonna have a nice friendly game today
France: cowabunga it is
Ursa "I'll turn off barbs" France "Hon-hon-hon"
Hold my bagette
the AI does not take work ethic.
it just doesn't.
it is allways left for grabs.
Try playing on a large or huge map size (6 and 7 religions respectively). The AI will consistently take Work Ethic as the 5th or 6th belief.
yeah I've had it stolen before - it's a sneaky one. The AI will wait till you take the pantheon and then go "yonk"
@@UrsaRyan why does my work ethic say that it does 1% production per citizen following my religion?!? I can’t find an answer to this anywhere online!!!
I never knew about that achievement and now I’m remembering a game I had where I settled across the entire south pole (on a huge map) and now I’m wishing I had done it then!
It's such a tricky achievement to get, yeah you really have to go for it - south pole civ sounds awesome though!!
Ah yes another Ursa video... time to skip to 10min in to see turn 1 happen! Heheheh
Privyet comrad! Been a while since the last time i answered the early bear call because of work. Cant wait to follow your journey back to the homeland 🐻🐻🐻
if you finish settling one line, then settle a second line. It would be...unparalleled
There we go, these are the jokes i read the comments for
no barbarians.
wanna bet he still puts in the +dmg versus barbarians card?
Edit:
NO HE DID NOT! O.O
Ursa learns, every now and then XD
Being attacked by the deity AI when you're trying to rush a religion out (or even an early wonder) is always especially frustrating. Particularly since the end result tends to be that both of you fall behind the curve -- lots of dead units and no gain for anyone.
It's weird not following it up with the capture of france - that would have absolutely pushed me forward but holding myself back really added to the pain!
I am from Kyiv, and I love all of your games, so don't make yourself worries
It's Kiev. Actually. 🌚
@@charleszp938 Really, you’re gonna be an asshole to a Ukrainian?
Early bears assemble! I loved this achievement, but it is hard! Looking forward to seeing your approach!
My approach is getting increasingly frustrated as the AI does everything it can to thwart me!!!
@@UrsaRyan my memory of doing it was very similar - AIs getting in the way, and reallllly long mountain chains springing up from the bottom of the map. Maddening!
0:55 I really respect and admire this statement and you addressing this. Games are just games, but they ripple out into the world in unexpected ways and I think it was very responsible for you to say this - 🐦
The moment you said 'achievement', my reaction was 'oooh boi'
And knowing you, you're gonna pave the whole route with railroads
It was a very hard thing to resist!!
I dont usually watch the modded gameplay games, but Russia is my fave Civ, excited to see what you do with it
Very fun game this one, would recommend!
Yaaaay, my country! Nice start !
I LOVE civ expanded, been having so much fun with Canada lately!
Canada is always a blast to play, totally agree!
Guessing no domination victory for that one
We have to see how this shakes out. I can totally see Germany going after Kabul. And France is already showing signs that it's getting ready for round 2. it's kinda hilarious that Ursa -- who frequently does domination victories -- is trying to stay peaceful, but the AI is going "No! Not happening, friend!" It didn't come up, but in this episode but I think a religious victory is the way to go. Thing is: this is a inland seas map. For anybody not familiar with them, they are ABSOLUTELY MASSIVE. I'm no Ursa, but I had to give up a Macedon domination run because it took 10 turns to get units from my capital to the frontline **with railroads** on a STANDARD sized map. It was bonkers.
I m recently playing on a huge map and it barely take me 17 turns to go from one side to the opposite side,wtf@@mechaboydx
The knights of Solomon secret society could be extremely useful for this achievement. Just getting additional trade route for each lavra is bonkers
I love that mod so much!
I screamed "Don't you dare" when you mentioned Goddess of the Hunt - thanks for the heart attack!
Hahaha XD
Double slinger start now civ lifer would approve
I suppose you could have tried converting some of Fance's cities while at war. That could have been some era score
I wrote this comment RIGHT BEFORE YOU SAID YOU THOUGHT OF IT. this is why I never leave comments
Hahaha - honestly sometimes I surprise myself with what I forget!!
Can't wait for you to get progressively more mad at the traders choosing really dumb routes later on in the game
Oh boy this is an accurate prediction
This one already getting spicy
Settling in a line of Tundra due East? That's very Russian of you!
Just keep going till the snow runs out!!!
Algorithm 120
Huzzah Ursa
In the words of the Elector Count of Altdorf and Emperor himself: "No peace, just war!"
Early bears, assemble!
Seems like first start was on historical birthplace of Russia. In Novgorod on Il'men lake. Where Rurik came and Novgorodian Rus' was based. Few years later it will become Kievan Rus'
Sejong said I lack the ambition to claim land. So I took his.
You should have used the Got Lakes mod map template as that gives the option to put more rivers on the map.
Great mod that one!
Kudos
to be fair, france waited 60 years to declare a surprise war on you.
You always forget the timeframes involved!!
Huzzahhh!! 🐻
HUZZAH!!!
I am currently in a Russia game where i am trying to get every tundra tile on the huge Earth map. I might be able to divert attention to bully France in your honor though...
Gondor calls for aid!!!
Hello buddy, I'm from Russia and first, I want to thank you for your honest position on the war in Ukraine, I am also against Russian aggression, and in general I am against Putin. Now I would like to tell you that in fact Ukraine, or rather, some of its elements are present in Civ 6, namely Scythia. Yes, Scythia really had a huge impact on the formation of Ukraine, and Ukraine, as an older sister gave birth to Russia (You can ask about Novgorod, but in fact, the ruling dynasty rather came from Novgorod to the already ready proto-state formation in Kiev, this is the first, and the second Novgorod has a very indirect relation to modern Russia, Novgorod at that time was a completely separate state, modern Russia is the legacy of the Muscovite kingdom, which then later, for the sake of prestige, appropriated the name Greek Russia. Saying that Novgorod and Russia are one and the same is like saying that modern Italy and Ancient Rome are one country). The remnants of the Scythians lived in the south of Ukraine, modern Odessa, Crimea, Zaporozhye, etc. and they mixed later with the Slavic tribes from the north and so the Ukrainians originated. For example, you can guess that the Ukrainian Cossacks (and these are Ukrainian troops) they literally adopted the Scythian equestrian culture for the war, since the Scythians were excellent riders. Also, the Ukrainians have many words of northern Iranian origin in their language, all this is a Scythian heritage. Therefore, I would like to suggest that you play as Scythia, and put Russia against her, and then defeat Russia playing as Scythia, this would be cool and symbolic, this would combine real events with the game
And that's the risk of the double scout start
The civilization expanded mod seems a little buggy on my game, because I can't see the changes of each Civ in the overview when I choose him nor can I see them in the loading screen. The mod works, but I have to look up the changes because the game doesn't display them anywhere. Any advice?
If there is an Ursa's #1 video, I'm there ._.v
XD
Ursa, for future games challenges, what about doing victory challenges for civs not suited for them? A tech victory for Spain, for example, or a Religious victory for Korea?
I like it!
NATO didn’t give Russia any help with what they did. But it does suck war is always a shitty option.
Honestly, it`s so hilarious France went for islam 😂
Topical?
Woo early bear time
Peter isnt Waging war in Ukraine at the moment, Putin is. You are fine. Slava Ukraina.
This problem can be solved with some mods.
@Riotdrop даже и развлекать иностранцев не надо, спс за базу
Ursa, haven't you've been studying the history of your own country? Oops
@@drevil13KAC To be honest, Ursa has been mocking UK for its colonialism.
@riotdrop8100 Yes, so was Poland, Finland, Moldova and Kazakhstan...
Both countries are descendants of Kievan Rus. Muscovy/Russia was a minor principality that was just isolated enough to survive Mongol, Lithuanian and Polish incursions. The territory of Ukraine had been conquerred by Lithuania and colonised by Poland prior to the conquest and colonisation by Muscovy. So, I am not sure what's "amazing" about it...
Speaking of the civ overhaul mod on russia, i found it pretty stupid that russias UNITS are immune to blizzards, but cities are not.
..YES, i did lose 9 pop and 6 tiles to one single blizzard in a multiplayer game
Oooof, yeah I've had that happen as well!
At 27:31 was taking Hypatia on the cards? Internally I was screaming for it 😂
Totally missed it! I should have XD
Always have one warrior at home.
I think this achievement is possible on one of the bigger yet not another map pack tsl maps.
To be fair, Civ 6 Russia is better than the current real life Russia by miles. Still in the Tsardom and all
I’d love to join you, but I’ve already got all the achievements lol
Casual flex, love it!
I wonder if there's a Ukraine civ mod you can try out as a sort of aside (for you to play, obviously). Would be a good unique way to play this series I suppose and if one does exist it can be a great way to explore Ukrainean culture.
I honestly haven't looked but Ukraine or not, whenever the channel supporters send me a mod to look at, I tend to - modded leaders can have such fun abilities
Always appreciate your concern regarding worldly matters, however this game is all in good taste! No worries!
All you can do is try = )
I would give up if that was me 😂. I hate losing my capital
Guess you're going to be Russian about in this series
🐻
Please please please even when you hit 50k keep that intro but change it a bit, amazing stuff like always Ursa💜
We'll keep updating it as we go = )
@@UrsaRyan yayyyy :D
What? Ursa playing Historically bloodthirsty rulers or nations is not an endorsement of the nation or the ruler at the time? Damn i was misled... seriously those witch hunts get out of hand some times.
does anyone know why my "Work Ethic" has some other description than in this video? Was it changed or somehting?
I suspect you have a religion mod on, or you're playing an odler version of civ
you gotta try the earn every single great person in one game challenge
Oh man could you imagine...!
early bears assemble!
Could've Kept the war going long enough to convert em for Era score..... hmm mentioned it too late.
Honestly I thought Ezri Dax was dead.
Just giv it a go
So sad that any mention of my country makes people think of war. Great game though, love the civilisations expanded
Only the ill informed and the smooth brains
green
🖖
I kind of get it? But i also don’t, I mean we don’t feel weird playing civs like USA when they also invade countries all the time?
It’s weird how it works indeed, although you’re opinion is totally valid nonetheless!
I only just joined the community this year. Can someone explain to me the paul reference?
Paul is a useless spy who appeared in several games, usually letting Pingala get merked just after Ursa has a rant about how crap spies are.
If you have a look at the shorts, it is the fifth one. It is titled 'Is Paul the most useless spy in civ vi'. The whole series is good, but that will give you the crash course.
It's been explained better than I would have!!
Russia Civ 6 goat
thank you for your words about Ukraine! ❤
The 5 warriors deity AI gets are really dumb at game start. Maybe give them a warrior every 5 turns until 25
Try Deity ++ the mod - even if you don't play on the harder modes, you can change it so the AI gets no bonus at the start but bigger bonuses through the game, it's great!
bro this modded version of russia is so broken wtf
So much fun to play, would recommend!!
Daily comment.
Huzzah!
Not sure if I should be rooting for you to fail or rooting for you to succeed with the achievement.
I am rooting for you though :P
Yeah yeah :P
If it's any consolation, you didn't have a shrine in time to create a missionary and spread your religion before the era. Sleep well 😁
Haha - good point! Still kept me up though!
:D
Kinda crazy how people care about playing Russia in a video game because of the war. But don't care about playing any other country no matter the historical context. pretty shallow thought process tbh.
If you’re worried about playing Peter because of what Putin is doing to Ukraine in 2022/2023 wait until you hear what Peter did! 😂
Ursa cheating!
Turning barbs off...
a
Don't be soft Ursa just play the game however you want
Agree about it feeling weird to play Russia. I know it makes no sense but it feels unseemly and so I don't do it anymore.
I believe that if you hadn't said anything, people wouldn't connect playing ancient Russia in a video game to a war of 2022... But, your algorithm has just exploded I imagine.
I understand why you did it, although it turned out somehow ridiculous that you hadn't given any disclaimers while playing modern warlike countries like USA, UK or (Saudi) Arabia. I know you had sometimes mocked them for their transgressions, but you have still run into double standards, selecting one war over another as more morally wrong.
Also, NATO is a side in this war, so you might have a feeling that "the world is against Russia". It is the case amongst maybe 1/4 of world population, called the West, puppets and allies. But the surveys show that the Global South (people, not just their governments) doesn't care that much about it. They want to end it as soon as possible and don't care about Ukrainian borders. They are more interested in climate change, inflation, COVID vaccines and food shortages. They get outraged whenever NATO is pushing for victory not settlement. I mean, after the Western genocide in the Middle East and elsewhere, people kind of see dishonesty when the West imposes sanctions on Russia and at the same time supports financially and militarly the Israeli apartheid or Saudi Arabian genocide in Yemen.
Lots of love to all people screwed by wars.
