  • In this clip from the ‪@winston_marshall‬ show I dive into the significance of nationalism within the populist movement. Nationalism, broadly defined, is at the core of national populism.
    Contrary to what liberal progressives may claim, national populists are not focused on race but rather on a shared sense of cultural commonality, values, and history.
    This inclusive definition means anyone who subscribes to the national identity can be part of it, regardless of race or ethnicity. I explore how leaders like Marine Le Pen and Nigel Farage have expanded their definitions of national identity, reflecting the diversity of modern societies.
    Join us as I debunk misconceptions and delve into the true drivers of national populism. Don't forget to subscribe, like, and share for more insightful analysis!

      @@andybrice2711 What an odd idea.
      I assume you believe anyone born here is British. Or anyone who's lived here for three years.
      In fact they are merely UK citizens.
      It takes at least three generations to assimilate culturally and longer by DNA and intermarriage.

    Wrong, true nationalism is about race, territory and survival of the group, ethnitity/race. Every people have a right to a homeland to call their own. Disappointed in this intellectually dishonest discussion pushing the idea that 'civic' nationalism is true nationalism. The word nationalism comes from the word natal - which literally means to be born, lineage, i.e. RACE.

    The word 'Nation' comes from the Latin word for being born of a race or ethnicity. Proffessor Hills the senior lecturer of Archeology at Cambridge University said in her book The Origins of the English, the first logical starting point for the origins of the English here, goes back 10,000 years. So can you really be a Native of this Nation without that lineage ?

    • @stephfoxwell4620
      @stephfoxwell4620 3 месяца назад

      Native maybe but not First Nation.
      I think lineages before 1300, the common ancestry point are the minimum requirement.
      Going back 7 generations is enough too. Allowing for some cousin marriage 7 generations is about 100 forebears . Each one being 1% of your DNA. If 51% are British you are majority British too
      King Charles by this rule is 64% German.

    There's nothing at all wrong with nationalism having an ethnic component- it's about roots as well as culture and values. It's about generation upon generation of connection to a place, a land and a slow-forged complex national character. . It's not that people of another background can't become part of the story of the English, but it doesn't happen over night, without significant time , investment and commonality. That aspect of identity deserves far more recognition and respect than it seems to be getting, even in this conversation. It's not intrinsically about hate or feeling superior at all. Could I, a white English person become a Pakistani or Japanese? Of course not. We've allowed our concept of Englishness to become so welcoming, so open and vague it's on the verge of meaning nothing at all.

    • @andybrice2711

      I just think that’s quite irrelevant.
      A person could have generations of British ancestry but personally no respect for core British values.
      Or a person could be an immigrant who has specifically chosen this country as their home out of a respect and affinity for British culture. And develops a strong patriotism.
      I’ve known many of both those types of people.
      It just makes no sense to judge people by their ancestry if you have the opportunity to judge them by their individual character instead.

      @@evolassunglasses4673 I am thoroughly unconvinced that culture is that heavily influenced by race. I think it's far more influenced by geography and history.
      And at the individual level, a person's character is vastly more influenced by their personal history, random mutations, and recent ancestry than by their distant lineage.
      I also think it's highly unlikely that you have any unique claim to this island as your "ancestral homeland". Both you and I almost certainly have Roman, Viking, and Norman ancestors amongst others.

      @@evolassunglasses4673 If culture is downstream from race, why are Nigerians and Hong Kongers better integrated into British culture than Albanians and Irish Travellers?
      I'm not saying the UK should just be some giant soulless trading outpost for corporate globalism.
      But it just makes no sense to base immigration on race as a proxy for culture, when you can just base it directly on culture.

    • @applegrovebard
      @applegrovebard 3 месяца назад

      @@andybrice2711 I'm not judging people as to their character or moral worth. Of course it's possible for an immigrant to be a finer citizen, more knowledgeable and appreciative of the native culture than many natives. (Although as a matter of fact very many immigrants have little knowledge of and in fact despise much of western culture and values). That's not the point. If you were deeply and admiringly immersed in Japanese culture would that make you Japanese or give you a right to live there, or give you a legitimate say in their future? Of course not. Many countries throughout the world have a long-established indigenous population. I just want for Britain what they want- to largely remain recognizably themselves. Heritage, roots matter a lot- or do you think anyone should be able to live wherever in the world they choose?

      Rexona - you're talking twaddle. Preserving your culture and handing it on intact to the next generation is your actual job in life. Still - at least when you and your children are a discriminated-against minority in your own country - as has happened to the Christian populations of Pakistan, Egypt, Armenia, Lebanon, Syria, Nigeria etc etc - and there's no-one to turn to because the MPs, councillors, police etc are all from the ROP and couldn't care less about what happens to you - you can cheer yourself up by saying "I may be too scared to set foot outside the house - but at least I wasn't racist!"
