Actually, Roberto. The reason I subscribed many months ago is because one of your videos was the VERY FIRST "how to youtube" video that told me to be patient...to have realistic expectations. I've watched hundreds of "how to youtube" videos previously and all of them made me think I'd be a smash hit within months. Thanks for the reality check. It really did help me keep my sanity.
Agreed. I've had to keep reminding myself that for the last year and a half. When it gets me down, I'll step back for a week or so and recollect myself. Then I come back with a fresh perspective.
just realised i like your profile picture, so i checked out your channel. I just glanced over it. I will take a better look when i get home from work. I need to reworke my profile picture or what do you thing is it different enough so you would check out my channel based on it?
I want to become an actress. Absolutely not because of the money or the fame but because of purely, the art. I also have amazing grades in school. When I tell people I want to pursue this they ask me why I would "waste" my smartness. They don't understand that school gives me anxiety and depression. I hate it so much. I just want to be happy. Happiness to me is playing other people: it so simple yet so complicated for most people. It's just so hard to deal with on a daily basis! I appreciate what you do! You keep me motivated! Thank you!
You need to do what your heart desires! It will sound morbide but it's the absolute truth: When you'll be on your death bed you wont regret the things you did but the things you did not do!
Poonam Keshary I truly understand. I struggle in this way while punching a clock. Roberto is giving me the motivation I need to put my skills to work as an entrepreneur. I hope things are working out for you. Go for it! 😉😁
Me too girl. One of my dreams is To become an actress. You see many people in life wont understand your life path Because it differs from their own. You HAVE To follow your heart.
When you're passionate and you care about it, you'll do your best work. But when you're passionate and you really care about other people, you will do your *greatest* work. Words to live by... thank you my man. :)
I agree with you 100% that colleges today should focus more on networking. Most people today like staying in their own bubble and not wanting to venture out to meet other people to help grow them individually.
As the CEO of a 20+ year old successful marketing, consulting & creative services company I must say that you give OUTSTANDING advice to newbies to the industry!
A subscriber just recommended your channel to me. You give great advice! The majority of my family repeatedly told me art school & RUclips probably wouldn't bring much success, but I didn't listen. ;) I'll be listening to more of your videos while I work today. Thanks for putting out such helpful content.
+SoCraftastic thanks for taking the time. Yeah non creatives like to tell creatives how it is all the time... with misinformation, good intentions are one thing, helping us get what we actually want is another
That was something I dealt with growing up. My own art teacher told that there was no career in graphic design lol. I'm a graphic artist now for a company. She was trying to get me to be a teacher an art teacher. I love teacher and may consider it later in life but it wasn't me. I told her that why is there so much design about around me. So I put myself out there and made a living. I'm considering going on my own soon. Roberto you are a inspiration to me, thanks!
I love the ambience of your RUclips channel. all of your colors are beautiful and so are you and your spirit that you are projecting. I haven't had a chance to look at it in more detail-- I just wanted to let you know that at first glance I can see you are doing a great job. I decided to look at your channel because Magic is my favorite word in the universe.
Thank you so much, Cassandra! ♥ I took a look at your channel too, and it sounds like you have some very awesome plans for the future! Let's both work hard to fill the world with wonderful DIYs and of course...magic!! ♥
Who you choose to listen to really does make a difference! My goal is to be a full-time illustrator and designer one day... half the people I talk to say it will never work, the other half (who have done it themselves) say it is definitely possible and profitable... I am currently working full-time in marketing and design - but at night I am illustrating for children's books (mostly self-published or with smaller publishing houses). I am hoping to start reducing the day job and increasing the night job soon - but it does seem to take guts. :)
Very cynical some might say, but everything said is truth. I'm on my way to building out my own sustainable income through my channel and it's growing over the past year. Being on RUclips and building out my own brand has been much more interesting than anything I've done in my engineering career. Thanks for your videos Roberto.
Great advice about not listening to someone who,is not successful in the creative field. Being a freelance caricature artist has changed my life and I love my new journey. It was hard to get here, lots of bumps, but it was all worth it.
This is the advice I needed right now. My parents keep trying to push me on a more "traditional" path of job searching in the creative industry which is awesome b/c they love me, but they're both not experienced in that industry so it rarely feels helpful. I feel like when I follow creative industry professional's advice I move more quickly towards my goals than when I try to use the older systems. Sometimes I feel like the latter is just me spinning in place or taking steps backward. Thank you for reminding me to redirect my energy on what's current from people already on the path I hope to be on and less on the traditional viewpoints in a different industry. Reminders that my goals are not the same goals as others and there are many different paths to the goals.
It's so amazing that you're aware of the beneficial results of listening to the people who are already doing what you're doing! Success leaves clues and we just get to stand on the shoulders of our predecessors and add our own special something to all of it. It sounds like you're well on your way. I've seen so many people decide to take the "traditional" or "safe" route because it's the more secure thing to do, but as Roberto points out, job security is an illusion. We get to do what we're drawn toward and what others think about it is their own to deal with.
As someone who has been a creator of speaking programs since 1957, I am new to RUclips. It's a learning as I go process. It has taken time to settle on my channel's purpose. The key for me in this video is getting close to the successful. In my career I found more success in becoming a better creator first, then finding places where they fit. Thanks for this, Roberto. Excellent ideas to consider.
I've written for years and had one bad experience and every since then I've shied away from trying to get published again. Then a few years ago I submitted some of my poetry and have been published. I only got paid in Literary copies but that's a credit I can list. I finally, thanks to watching one of your videos Roberto, submitted a story and am waiting to hear back. I am much older now and I am at the age now that I don't want to look back and say oh God I wished had of..............I also youtube and have watched most every video you've made on tips and tricks. If nothing else you've given me the courage to try and for that I'm very grateful
First of all I want to say thank you for all the value you give in your videos. I'm only recently discovering your channel. I'm a military graphic artist and what you said about your friend that was a video editor in the military really spoke to me. Not to long ago I realized that the scenario you described could happen to me. So I'm currently in the process of branding myself and doing side projects to build a portfolio that's more diverse from the military projects I've done so far. Just trying to position myself to be as marketable as possible before it's time to hang up the boots. Again thank you for all the great content you provide and keep up the good work.
I love you so much Roberto.. I know that I don't know you personally, but I just love your spirit and I can feel that you have a genuinely good will toward people.. It's refreshing and I thank you for sharing.
You gave me some hope. Im studying economics rn but im absolutely not a math person and i hate numbers. Im a creative person. I’ve never seriously tried to draw or paint a day in my life but it’s the only thing that interests me, like concept art, graphic designing, and multimedia art. Economics has me feeling like im dying a slow death.
Thank you for actually addressing this. This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for thank you for being straightforward and honest about the current reality.
I am thinking of going back to college for pharmaceutical needs (simply for high income paying jobs). Yet my passion is to be a creative as you stated. I started searching videos for many different subjects about funds versus passion and came across your video. This was my deciding factor for going back to college as a creative profession. New subscriber, saying thank you for the validation and amazing information.
As a artist that live only from my art I find your content extremely valuable. I found your content about a year ago but it's not until now that I gained somewhat experience as a creative entrepreneur that I really understand your content and it gives me so many options for groing my brand, product and services. Continue putting awesome content bro you are brilliant!!!!
Roberto Blake That is a difficult question because it wasn't a matter of knowledge. I needed to venture by my self and see what worked and what didn't. So the best way to close that gap it might be to motivate artist to make that jump and create their own business and as they go in they journey they will start to understand better the value of your content. You are doing a excellent job in my opinion😉👍
Briliant advice, Roberto. Due to a burnout, I had to concede my director title on an indie short film that I'm producing. It was tough. But Ilet go and someone for whom I have a lotnof respect directed the film for me. The footage turned out differently than I had expected but I am very happy with it. These days I'm focusing on writing and youtubing, since I can't be on set as crew or directing. About networking, it's as much with other indie artists, even podcasters in my case, not just youtube and film, but also former employers. One of my former employers, we had a great relationship, thenpresidentnof the company, and he, in the company's name, contributes to all of my fundraisers, whenever I have them. It's someone who is outside my industry, but it's anoutside of the box example. Since we have a good rapport, this person is willing to support me in my endeavors. It helps, since I've had to sort of reshape my brand a bit, since I am technically ill, unable to function with as much energy or focus. But had it not been for previous networking, after taking two years off from everything to recover more promptly, I'd be stuck with nowhere to go. Right now, I'm slowly moving back into being productive (burnouts take years to recover from, depending on the intensity, and it's something none of us tend to plan for), and the freelance work and network arenwhat are paying my bills. Hopefully, I get redirect myself (no pun intended) and start making profit from my new direction, as opposed to justmaking ends meet. So health is another thing tokeep in mind when developing a personal brand. It certainly caught me off guard. Anyway, some things for some discussions, and maybe someone else here has experienced a burnout and had to adapt their brand inconsequence, who could offer more advice. Thanks again for the video, Roberto. Always appreciate the friendly andprofessional insight.
No! it is true Berto...i see thats whats going on with me now.. thats such a nice,.. little profound mental perception of our cause and effect man incredible. :)
Roberto, Thank you for your videos, My issue is starting up as an Acrylic Painter Business owner from scratch while working full time and volunteer part time job and family. I am lost where to start lately.
Roberto, I want to thank you for your channel and great advice! I have been stuck in a career rut for the past year at least and looking to beef up my side business of freelance graphic design. This video couldn't have come at a better time in my life and has given me the reality of my career choices and motivation I needed to continue on with freelancing. Much appreciated, Kendra
This format works great, especially if it's peppered in every once in a while for variety. As long as there is stuff to think about, i'll be happy to hear it. Looking forward to the upcoming show.
So I just started watching your videos and came across them through some research for a laptop. Coincidentally I've been trying to get into web design because of the growing interest while trying to build my own website as a performer. It's crazy how this video popped up at the perfect time. Thanks for your time, dedication and wisdom. I truly needed this video in my life with all the personal things going on and this video now has me super motivated for my future! You're awesome!
Sylvern Groomes You should definitely check out some of his other videos. Always insightful and helpful. Helps me tap into my productive side of of creative side.
This video is so important. As a copywriter, I've seen so many changes and layoffs. Side projects are key to being able to pivot from an employee to freelancer, Company A to Company B, or even from an old media role to a new media role. I'd like to hear more about how you hire creative talent. (A question for your new show, perhaps?)
You certainly were on target with me! I honestly thought you were talking directly to me. Lol. Everything you said was where I'd been in my career. Great career advice. Inspiration. Thank you!
This is too real 0:56... I've experienced this so much in my life, it's the hardest when it comes from those who are closest to you. But as you said, you can only take advice from someone who hasn't done what you are trying to do with a grain of salt. The more I learn about the reality of using the internet to build a career the more I am able to apply what I feel is the best strategy for my career.
Yep, experienced people are the best source of information. People who can't do it, tend to have a habit of talking down people who are in the process of doing something they haven't....
I work a creative job, which is a true 11 to 4 job, and he is absolutely right. You have use that job as a way to meet people. Through my job, I met the mayor who got me in contact with the community center where I give lectures on Web Design. I also created a ripple in the industry where the competitors are watching me. HOWEVER, nothing is better than building your own company while working at this job. I built The Field Show from 0 to 7000+ and that's before I started putting work in the marketing...which hasn't even started.
💡💡💡 DUDE! Stumbled across your content yesterday, and I've been binging up to this moment: I am usually NOT one to leave "RUclips comments;" however, YOU Sir, have inspired me to my soul!!!!! Thank you, and I look forward to catching up on your content, past & future!
I found your channel yesterday and I've already watched about six hours worth of your content. I love your advice and you are truly an inspiration. Thank you very much for making this. Have a good one, and keep up the great work :)
it's so true! college is great but there are certain aspects they wont teach and that's your bit of homework to do! everything you learn in college you take and implement in the outside world in terms of networking, going to events & creating content! take what you learn in college and widen your research in your own time! you'll be suprised of the things they don't teach you are mostly what you really need to know!
Great video and 100% true. College programs are not aligned with industry practices or current trends. Then when you graduate you may learn there is no job security. Any job can have a big padlock on the door the next morning, leaving any number of people out of work. At that moment, have an action plan so you can hit the ground running - already knowing the next steps, and not missing a beat. If I ever lose a gig, my next rate goes up a notch - not down. I use the opportunity to raise my value and start at a higher level with the next opportunity. New clients do not care about any other clients and come to your value with their own needs in mind - nothing to do with others. Of course, that is a benefit of being a free agent. Going to jobs asking for applications with hat in hand only invites devaluation and ownership of your fate. I've worked in local SME's, multinational companies and global megacorps - and now, as a free agent - I can pretty much assert that I will always continue as a free agent, and NEVER go back to asking permission to take a leak.
Love this! Job security isn't secure. Your videos have been super helpful in terms of getting my head around a 'business model' for artistry, which is something I'm attempting to build. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I admire your experience and keen insight to decide where to invest your time/activities at any given time (eg. moving from media content to marketing)
This video pretty much sums up the whole reason I've turned to this creative path.. I am one who had to go 10 weeks without work only earning $350 in day to day hustles.. I have a current deadens job now but I'm focused on the goal of becoming independently funded. Thank you for what you do. -James
O wow where have you been all my life. My passion is in creative writing particularly spoken word poetry so I created my own website while using social media to brand myself as a poet. One of the obstacles I have is that I live in a small blue collar town in NC so I don't have a circle of creative people around me that I have have access to on a consistent basis so I have to use the Internet to find my circle. I wish I was told this back in high school because I was always told that I needed a job to have a good quality of life but with me growing up in a ression world (I'm 21) I wasn't prepared to having to create my own business. I know I still have time to establish myself but I would've been so much further in my carrer and I wouldn't have had student loan debt (I was in NY in my frist year of college).
I think you've hit it on the head Roberto. I think that maps to what Gary Vaynerchuk says in that "Doing the right thing is always the right thing" and what he says about caring about others. I find exactly that when I let go of my own desires that I seem to be able to produce my best work. Thanks for the awesome video as always! I love hearing your thoughts. I also love the candid videos.
Hey Roberto! Everything in this video is so true! I for one am glad I took your advice about a year and a half ago and started doing my own graphic design website and RUclips channel, because I just got fired from my 9-5 job last week and I would have been totally screwed if I hadn't set up shop on this platform.
Thanks for this video. I've been an in-house design for about 15 years. I quit my job to start my own graphic design company because I can see the decline of the in-house designer. I"m not getting any younger and I figure if I got laid off at this point in my life I would have very difficult time finding another job. So I said screw it and decided to go out on my own. I also wish someone had emphasized the importance of doing side projects. I'm grateful that I did some projects but I wish I had done more.
Great video, dropping good knowledge roberto. I work as a in-house front end designer for a TV channel in the UK. I like it here a lot but I know it's important to set myself up for the long run so I'm working on personal projects, my own website and an online business.
I really enjoyed this. It is encouraging and helps to trigger my creative juices. It helps me to focus and reset on meeting my goals. More of these is fine with me.
Thank you so much for the sound advice. I learn a lot from your channel and use to make the mistake you taking advice from people who are in no way related to the art world.
My parents were never a good inspiration for my creativity. They say I do great writing but have never read one of my written works and dissuede me from videos. I did find a small community of dinosaur story authors I joined and have a small following surrounding my series, and they are excited for the next installment. Whatever you do, surround yourself with like minded people. And as I always say, be ambitious, work hard, and make your own dreams come true
This is a great conversation! I'm a writer in the healthy food space. There aren't a lot of jobs out there in this area (and don't desire to have one...). I am focusing on building a healthy food media company where I can use my writing skills in both B2B and B2C areas. This is the most intellectually stimulated I've been in my entire adult life. So great to be a creative! I'm going to go back and look for all of your videos for creatives. Do you have a hashtag I can search for?
Its good to hear someone who thinks this way, i am still new in the industry, i know i have a lot to learn but what you said is very true and i have actually learnt a lot. Im a 3D animator in Zimbabwe and this has given me a new way of thinking about my career, especially the part about working on my own projects. Again Thanks for this video, Continue to do your thing, a lot of people are learning from you and its for free, compared to other people who just want views. this advice is priceless, i dont know if you are making money out of these videos but thanks for taking your time to do this. Legend4Life#
I’ve been binge watching your videos now. Going to try and apply the advice you’ve given. Got laid off a few months ago and I’m now working for a mortgage company doing the same shit again. Hope to make 2020 the year I’m working for myself. Audience building is tough to do though. Not giving up, however
Wow, this is top stuff... love you bro... loved your advice on letting go of the ego. How did you first go about learning to become a consultant specifically? And what does consulting entail?
I worked out the consulting backwards from remembering client meetings in corporate and how we managed the client relationship. Then I remembered my methods as a trainer and instructor and tutor. I combined those things the best lessons from my guidance counselors from school, and setup a fixed fluid model, things that I do with everyone and a roadmap for 3 months, 6 months and a year, and also a loose structure that allows me to build around the invidual and their goals, strengths and weaknesses. I use SWOT analysis as well. My consulting comes down to an audit of your current brand assets and social media accounts, an assesment of your long and short term goals, and then plotting a series of actions, resources, deliverables and executions required to obtain those outcomes.
Solid advice, my background is in illustration, I showed in galleries throughout the US and Canada and then I became a founder of a RUclips channel's that doing pretty well and freelance running a company's Instagram account has given me some insights into "the value of an image" on social media when licensing it from an artist for marketing purposes- and honestly, it's not that much. For the creative challenges idea, are you familiar with Illustration Friday? They'd give a loose concept, one word prompt and artists would interpret it. Thanks for all that you do! -Nerdarchist Ryan
*"As an artist I will tell you that, the day you learn to abandon all vanity is the you will stop being a starving artist."* Man, these powerful quotes echoes in my ego caverns and trembles his card house structures, I want to stop eating only pasta, I wanna stop to fear chill about the next winter. These quotes deserve not only one video about it, but a short series, they kick serious artist ass, they touch a lot of unconscious hurts; cultural, psychological, individual, you hit the nail: touché Roberto, touché! First: Self Entitlement and the "I deserve" mentality get kicked out of arena with this message, lazy people who count on others efforts are wiped from merit philosophy. No pain, no gain. No try, no win. Simple, but an enormous lot of artists simply don't look to get it. They wanna appear with fighting to show up, and have the gallery with signed blank canvas. Level 1 maturity ego. Second: My level, a little chaotic people who feel (just a little) hurt by successful organized artists. The potential energy stuck in bullshit clutters that together make a stressful mountain of doom. Wasted artists thriving to get free from themselves. Eating pasta and counting penny for the next month. A lot of times blaming evil capitalism for their fails. There's light on the end of the tunnel. Third: Skilled guys with some spark and success that fall from their own illusions, maybe the most dangerous ones, because now they have what to lose. I see a lot of guys like that in communities, they know what to do "but wait, there's a new series on Netflix, my date is glorious and the pocket is a little fat, maybe tomorrow..." In the end, worst case we artists can charmingly point some fingers eating popcorn while the microwave pasta is getting ready... Please Roberto, kick some more asses, for the good of this world, make a series about artists vanity, you will release the ego Kraken from the gates. Thanks.
Woaw thank u so much for this video, this speaks so much truth to me since I'm a Junior in high school and big college decisions are coming up Truth is I want to study animation b/c itsx been a passion I've been doing Graphic design for the past 3 years, and Im already certified in Photoshop and will be for other Adobe applications I'm so happy of the community you've build here on your channel, I'm usually terrified to post comment, but after watching some of your latest video I'm seeing how important it is to connect w/ people, which is something that I really need improvement on hope to see lots of those type of career related stuff your talking about, b/c I have lots of questions about the creative industry hehe
Love your info. I'm trying to get my name out as an artist. Its taking a long time but I'm seeing results slowly. the more I put in the more I get out.
I always wanted to be an artist, teachers told me that I’d never be one. I listened and have been stuck in a dead end job. I’m just now age nearly 21 deciding to I want to peruse a creative career. I want to try to be a full time artist
Before RUclips i wanted to be a author but i keep thinking that even with all my creative ideas that my writing skills would ruin it(actually wrote a book) so now i got motivated by my favorite youtubers to make a channel my channel is nowhere as good as probably any other youtuber but im gonna try with both my channel and my book and i guess hope people enjoy my stuff
+PyroSyke when Andy Weir wrote The Martian all the publishers gave him crap about it. He went to Amazon and was a bestseller and they came crawling and he got the movie deal.... people are stupid, do what you want, win and become undeniable and the marketplace will respect your victories...
Thank you Roberto And i greatly respect what your doing for people strugging to get themselves out there I really hope you get more recognition Have a great day
Before I started my RUclips channel 45 months ago, I had written five novels and self-published three. At present I have two major works in progress along with several short stories. I like to write and I like to upload, because both are creative outlets for me as an individual. And that's what it's all about. And having fun along the way as well. Enjoying what you do is paramount; because if you don't enjoy what you do you'll never be able give whatever it is you do the full attention it needs. In other words; you'll be in limbo. :)
+Roberto Blake There definitely is money in the creative industry but the ammount of shit you have to go through is unvelievable. My father and mother got their diploma in architecture and now are as architects and interior designers. They each work between 45 and 60 hours a week and have to deal with craftsmen doing whatever the heck they want if they even come to the construction site to finish their jobs in time and commissioners wanting things for pittance and changing their mind every week. You might think now Hard Job = Good payment but not even that. We certantainly arent poor but we have a 15 and a 16 year old car and build nearly everything besides the water installation, frame work, foundation and roof ourselfes.
Roberto: Talk about the issue that 90% of all those students who are doing a creative degree, are thinking that the best option is to become an art teacher, a graphic design teacher, a writer teacher, etc etc etc after they graduate!!! Very few are the ones who actually go to the art market, open a gallery, become a professional illustrator, become a professional designer, etc. VERY FEW!!! So, basically, COLLEGES is the main problem why we have over saturation of artists out there and ONLY those who are REALLY FOCUSED AND TALENTED should be eligible to enter to a CREATIVE college degree and Masters!!! THATS MY OPINION
As always, awesome video Roberto, loved it. I have a small channel around one of my passions: The Somali language. I am a language lover and make videos specifically around the process of learning Arabic and Somali as a white British person. MY QUESTION: Do you think that there is any similarity between 'the creative' and 'the linguist' in terms of building a career for yourself? So many of the things which you say about the creative community resinate with me but my industry isn't really considered a creative one. For example, someone who loves languages doesn't fit directly into most employment roles and it is a skill which is increasingly outsourced and in house jobs are very rare to come by. Translators and interpreters are almost always freelance and many schools even outsource their languages teaching now to a travelling teacher who may be responsible for the French of 10 schools or something.
+Sam Of Somalia its not something limited to creative services though that is where my expertise is. It has to do with an overall shift in the culture of employment. It's something we will see more of.
I just wanted to say that I just love this video. Nearly everything you said was just so on point. Thank you for your dedication on all of the knowledge you give.
Hi Roberto, first and foremost thank you so much for this video. I am a writer and a doll maker. I make craft DIYs with the hope of selling my Jungle Beauty Goddess Book series. But I find myself feeling very frustrated when I see slime tutorials with a million views. So of course I decided to make slime, but the whole time I feel like I am selling my soul out.
Love this video! I think my biggest problem is I have too many hobbies and loves that I could start as a career. Not sure how to do them all or if I just chose one? :)
Great Video Roberto and timely. I just graduated and have been working on my resume and have been toying with the idea of what type of work eg, fulltime, contract, freelancing. So I'm guessing the Idea is to not put all your eggs in one basket. I'd like to work In Virtual Reality but there's not a lot of work here for that. So I'm thinking about trying to get some work experience in a studio before I try freelancing.
I can resonate with this completely. I was made redundant from my in-house 9-5 job, in favour of the company moving to hire independent contractors instead of in-house designers. I'm now trying to find my feet as a freelancer, but it's difficult.
Thank you so much Roberto for this video. I definitely agree with you in regards to today's industry. Full time design jobs are becoming extinct. Contracts and freelance work is the new thing. I was told that clients perfer working with individual freelance designers. Sounds like becoming a creative freelancer is the way to go and that's what I was thinking of doing. Running my own freelance business where I work for myself. Along side that doing personal projects is a great idea because yes employers sometimes don't allow you to use there work in ur portfolio. I am currently working on updating mine but waiting for my past employers approvals as some work I did is still in development so I may not be able to update much 😑 usually paid work is what should be used in the portfolio but sounds like I need to make up projects and treat it as a industry project.
Hey Roberto, so true but in my experience my career never got that far. As graphic designer living in NYC, I struggle so hard ever since I graduated from college 2012. I was forced to turn my career into a hobby. Now I have Union job that is very good but I am not happy personally. However, I have to pay bills and support my family. I am always tired because I work 40hrs+ heavy work. I feel I am stuck and I don't know how to progress. I been learning by my own slowly about UX/UI in an attend to transition from graphic design to UX and maybe become more valuable. I love your videos a lot. You are inspirational and you keeping me hoping for a better future ever since I found you on RUclips 2 years ago. Best regards, Jarvis Fernandez
Thank you. It's refreshing to hear that there are open possibilities to graphic design than the usual 9 to 5 choice. This makes me more confident in pursuing freelance design and entrepreneurship within the design field. Could you do a video about the advantages or disadvantages of trying to work in the field prior graduation? It's the question I think that holds some students back. should we wait? Or is it better now then later? Thank you and keep being awesome!
Love this vid as always Roberto! been following you for a while now and there's oneeeee tiny thing I think would have a massive impact on these kind of videos - music in the background. I think it would bring a much more positive, upbeat and inviting vibe :) Great content! All the best, Ted
I've been experimenting with that, its just more difficult because I'm not an audio engineer sometimes and I dont' get the mixing right and I don't want to make it difficult to undestand my words. I'll figure it out and how to mix properly eventually.
Alright nice! Will look forward to it. Really enjoying being in the RUclips Entrepreneur & Design community at the moment - documenting my whole journey right here as a 14 year old designer, creator and entrepreneur!
Roberto, I love your videos and have referred new subscribers but, I find certain music and certain volumes to be very distracting. Since this situation varies with the person I hope you consider leaving out the unnecessary at least, while you speak.
Great advice and tips thanks! I agree that freelance is the way to go, I like the freedom that comes with freelance work. You have to really hustle to keep the work lined-up in order to pay bills.
"The day you let go of Vanity is the day you let go of being a starving artist"
Wise words Sensei 🙏🏼💥💪🏾
"And your greatest work is the work you do in the service of other people"
Love that
The hardest skill to master is Patience. But it's so important.
completely underestimated every single time.
Egotastic Fun Time! inpatience is the death of the majority of small youtube channels.
AwesomeSauce thank you! Your comment made my day and year, TRUTHFULLY so much better!
PoopyPoonam • No problem it's just the truth 😉😅
Poonam Keshary I truly understand. I struggle in this way while punching a clock. Roberto is giving me the motivation I need to put my skills to work as an entrepreneur. I hope things are working out for you. Go for it! 😉😁
Me too girl. One of my dreams is To become an actress. You see many people in life wont understand your life path Because it differs from their own. You HAVE To follow your heart.
When you're passionate and you care about it, you'll do your best work. But when you're passionate and you really care about other people, you will do your *greatest* work. Words to live by... thank you my man. :)
4 year after this video ups and still and still relevant today
I agree with you 100% that colleges today should focus more on networking. Most people today like staying in their own bubble and not wanting to venture out to meet other people to help grow them individually.
As the CEO of a 20+ year old successful marketing, consulting & creative services company I must say that you give OUTSTANDING advice to newbies to the industry!
A subscriber just recommended your channel to me. You give great advice!
The majority of my family repeatedly told me art school & RUclips probably wouldn't bring much success, but I didn't listen. ;)
I'll be listening to more of your videos while I work today. Thanks for putting out such helpful content.
+SoCraftastic thanks for taking the time. Yeah non creatives like to tell creatives how it is all the time... with misinformation, good intentions are one thing, helping us get what we actually want is another
I didn’t even watch your videos yet, i just subscribed to ur channel to stick it to the people who doubt you
SoCraftastic omg!! i can’t believe it’s you! i’m still in grade
school but i hope to pursue my love of art in a career!
SoCraftastic i’m subscribed and a big fan!
That bit about letting go of vanity... ♥ Very well done with this one. I'll be coming back to it very often, I do think!
Its' one of the most important lessons a creative can ever learn. At some point it will get it's own video.
I look forward to it! :)
Yes go for it, we’re living either ways so why not to do the thing that lights us up?
Very cynical some might say, but everything said is truth. I'm on my way to building out my own sustainable income through my channel and it's growing over the past year. Being on RUclips and building out my own brand has been much more interesting than anything I've done in my engineering career. Thanks for your videos Roberto.
Looks like a pretty solid channel 2 years later!
My mom heard me listening to you and said, "I'm proud of you for listening to a sermon" 😂😅 I was like...yeah mom...yup...
I'm 36, fairly successful and learning to code on the backend. Keep learning people! This man gets it, more great advice from Roberto.
I agree 100%. I'm currently working on my own projects in paralel to work, just even as a creative outlet
+Shameless It really matters!
Great thought provoking points as usual, the camera quality looks great btw
More motivation for me to get better and do better in life ! Thank you
As a artist that live only from my art I find your content extremely valuable. I found your content about a year ago but it's not until now that I gained somewhat experience as a creative entrepreneur that I really understand your content and it gives me so many options for groing my brand, product and services. Continue putting awesome content bro you are brilliant!!!!
How can I better bridge that gap for people and cut that timeline down?
Great advice, Roberto. The best way to be successful is to look at what a successful person actually does. Simple, yet true.
Roberto, Thank you for your videos, My issue is starting up as an Acrylic Painter Business owner from scratch while working full time and volunteer part time job and family. I am lost where to start lately.
Roberto,
I want to thank you for your channel and great advice! I have been stuck in a career rut for the past year at least and looking to beef up my side business of freelance graphic design. This video couldn't have come at a better time in my life and has given me the reality of my career choices and motivation I needed to continue on with freelancing.
Much appreciated,
Kendra
This is very helpful we are thankful we found your channel.Kudos to you Roberto.
+ARMOURELLE not a bad idea.
Great insight for artists and crafty peeps trying to succeed outside the traditional paycheck.
this channel is so underrated. For real, his videos are so useful.
99% of you won't read this but the 1% of you who do, have a good night! 😃
Peanut, you too!
Peanut good morning
Haha, whew, I'm finally considered a 1%er of something!
Nerdarchy congratulations the Internet the great equalizer hehe
Peanut Haha i mossed you for like a day. But good night or good morning depending on where you're from 😆
You certainly were on target with me!
Roberto Blake You are a inspiration dude
I work a creative job, which is a true 11 to 4 job, and he is absolutely right. You have use that job as a way to meet people. Through my job, I met the mayor who got me in contact with the community center where I give lectures on Web Design. I also created a ripple in the industry where the competitors are watching me.
HOWEVER, nothing is better than building your own company while working at this job. I built The Field Show from 0 to 7000+ and that's before I started putting work in the marketing...which hasn't even started.
You should always be building your own thing in the shadows and on your downtime... always be creating...
💡💡💡 DUDE! Stumbled across your content yesterday, and I've been binging up to this moment: I am usually NOT one to leave "RUclips comments;" however, YOU Sir, have inspired me to my soul!!!!!
Thank you, and I look forward to catching up on your content, past & future!
+mrsniradale wow that is a tremendous comment
I found your channel yesterday and I've already watched about six hours worth of your content. I love your advice and you are truly an inspiration. Thank you very much for making this. Have a good one, and keep up the great work :)
+ViolinGamer thanks so much
I truly appreciate you also Roberto. He's right! 😁
it's so true! college is great but there are certain aspects they wont teach and that's your bit of homework to do! everything you learn in college you take and implement in the outside world in terms of networking, going to events & creating content! take what you learn in college and widen your research in your own time! you'll be suprised of the things they don't teach you are mostly what you really need to know!
I've worked in
local SME's, multinational companies and global megacorps - and now, as a free agent - I can pretty much assert that I will always continue as a free agent, and NEVER go back to asking permission to take a leak.
-James
+Rugged Tribe Ent just gotta keep putting in the work and positioning
Great point about pivoting - recognizing when you should delegate, to grow the business higher
Before I clicked, I already knew you would give honest and non sugar coated advice. Keep up the good work!
No sugar to be had lol.
Genuinely appreciate you
Hey Roberto! Everything in this video is so true! I for one am glad I took your advice about a year and a half ago and started doing my own graphic design website and RUclips channel, because I just got fired from my 9-5 job last week and I would have been totally screwed if I hadn't set up shop on this platform.
Ain't that the truth. You've helped me out a lot brah. Shooooots!!!
This is a really great video for everyone in the creative industry :) I need to share it with my colleagues
Very eloquent and articulate. Awesome vid man. First vid I saw and I subbed. 👍🏽
...its the hustle... and brother- +Roberto Blake, you are a beast when it comes to hustle.
Thank you 💪🏾 very insightful and informative brother. Definitely needed this
Its good to hear someone who thinks this way, i am still new in the industry, i know i have a lot to learn but what you said is very true and i have actually learnt a lot. Legend4Life#
Yo Roberto. New to your channel and I like the format of this video. Easy to watch and understand. Intelligent points and good ideas. Cheers Man.
I really appreciate your reply, it was very insightful and helpful. Thanks heaps Roberto!
*"As an artist I will tell you that, the day you learn to abandon all vanity is the you will stop being a starving artist."*
Man, these powerful quotes echoes in my ego caverns and trembles his card house structures, I want to stop eating only pasta, I wanna stop to fear chill about the next winter.
I see a lot of guys like that in communities, they know what to do "but wait, there's a new series on Netflix, my date is glorious and the pocket is a little fat, maybe tomorrow..."
In the end, worst case we artists can charmingly point some fingers eating popcorn while the microwave pasta is getting ready...
Please Roberto, kick some more asses, for the good of this world, make a series about artists vanity, you will release the ego Kraken from the gates.
Thanks.
🔥🔥🔥
Woaw thank u so much for this video, this speaks so much truth to me since I'm a Junior in high school and big college decisions are coming up
Truth is I want to study animation b/c itsx been a passion
I've been doing Graphic design for the past 3 years, and Im already certified in Photoshop and will be for other Adobe applications
I'm so happy of the community you've build here on your channel, I'm usually terrified to post comment, but after watching some of your latest video I'm seeing how important it is to connect w/ people, which is something that I really need improvement on
hope to see lots of those type of career related stuff your talking about, b/c I have lots of questions about the creative industry hehe
Love your info. I'm trying to get my name out as an artist. Its taking a long time but I'm seeing results slowly. the more I put in the more I get out.
Great message as always. Also, for what it's worth, the vacation has obviously done you well. Best wishes
I always wanted to be an artist, teachers told me that I’d never be one. I listened and have been stuck in a dead end job. I’m just now age nearly 21 deciding to I want to peruse a creative career. I want to try to be a full time artist
Emily Gallimore how did it turn out, then?
Before RUclips i wanted to be a author
but i keep thinking that even with all my creative ideas that my writing skills would ruin it(actually wrote a book)
so now i got motivated by my favorite youtubers to make a channel
my channel is nowhere as good as probably any other youtuber
but im gonna try with both my channel and my book
and i guess hope people enjoy my stuff
nice dude
i want to become a comic writer
+PyroSyke when Andy Weir wrote The Martian all the publishers gave him crap about it. He went to Amazon and was a bestseller and they came crawling and he got the movie deal.... people are stupid, do what you want, win and become undeniable and the marketplace will respect your victories...
Thank you Roberto
And i greatly respect what your doing for people strugging to get themselves out there
I really hope you get more recognition
Have a great day
Before I started my RUclips channel 45 months ago, I had written five novels and self-published three.
Good lessons that cross over to multiple fields...
So much golden information in this video. Thank you✊🏽❤️
thanks for the great video, all of your videos help me out and give me good advice, THANKS!
Thanks Roberto for that honest statement. All the best from Germany :)
Thanks for watching!
The most helpful: finding someone who writes the checks for creatives - 2016 I had two short term hires as a second/assistant.
And my first free-lance. Totally learned volumes thru this. I did get some tips from a gallery owner- totally worth finding someone local for advice..
Roberto Blake thank you so much for finding the time to get back to me. avid viewer of your content from Cornwall, UK.
I just wanted to say that I just love this video. Nearly everything you said was just so on point. Thank you for your dedication on all of the knowledge you give.
Great video!! So much covered in one video
As always, thanks, Roberto!
You made great points in this video.
+Mark Lynskey it can be. I've done some videos covering this, maybe they can help
9:00 SO FREAKING TRUE. PREACH BRO!!!
Best regards,
Jarvis Fernandez
You have to start with controlling your thoughts and energy.
+Kimberly Cullins freelance before you graduate and build up your network.
Thanks. I'll have more courage next time I see an opportunity. : )
Roberto you deserve millions of subs for helping us all
100% correct sir. You were spot on.
