Fatal crash closes US 58 E for hours; hazmat crews deployed

  • The crash caused a backup of almost 11 miles Friday morning, according to VDOT. As of 10:30 a.m., two left lanes reopened on US 58 eastbound. One woman told 10 On Your Side that she was stuck in traffic for 3 hours.

    Yeah cutouts dot 58 and I never understood why. They are deathtraps. I don't see cutouts like this on other highways, maybe they are there as 58 doesn't have many exits on that stretch.
    Probably about 10 or so years ago I was in the left left going past that gas station on the right, and someone pulled out of the gas station and crossed the entire highway RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. I was able to swerve out of the way but I likely would have been seriously hurt going 65-70 with someone cutting in front going 30-35.
    That whole stretch of 58 needs some attention.

    Well, driving is inherently dangerous. While we may be seasoned defensive drivers, things happen and happen fast to the best of us. Judging by the damage to the rig and the vehicle it was negligence by both drivers. The vehicle could have stopped in time, or switched to the lanes to his right to avoid this. The rig driver shouldn't of poked his nose out until it was clear. I have driven this road since 1968 and never had a problem...
