Back in the summer of 2018, I make my second coffee table. The first one I had made about a year and a half prior was the typical farmhouse DIY style - white base, X braces, special walnut stain - you name it.
I had been making pieces for friends and family at this point. This coffee table came after over thirty design iterations in Sketchup, and I've been in love with it ever since.
This isn't meant to be a how-to video, but simply documentation of my growing love of woodworking. I hope it inspires you to push yourself with designing and building unique pieces that make you happy.
#woodworking #midcenturymodern #coffeetable
Anyone could make that with a shop full of Festool, bet you even have a SawStop...unbelievable.
NorthSummitStudio anyone can work their ass of and save up for festool and a saw stop. So stop complaining
Crouth Furniture yeah but Greg is super handsome too so it’s like extra unfair.
This guy's my buddy and just messing around - but I'm pretty sure all of the other comments are not : )
NorthSummitStudio 😂😂😂
Crouth Furniture all in good fun, gotta keep Greg in check haha. ✌️
I'm a beginner at woodworking, watching someone like you is very inspiring and a good education on our to approach a project.
iv never seen this technique before of leaving material around the object to be able to clamp it. that's an awesome idea
Check out Jory Brigham's work. He is a genius. www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjz__Hj0cznAhVxCTQIHSiCBvMQtwIwAXoECAsQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D1UogI_3i-AY&usg=AOvVaw0CG1Q1Q764USJ2reOiSZHi
Sikor Sikor that technique is another tool in your arsenal. Learn it and keep it at the back of your mind for when you need it.
I’m not saying cut a whole tree and use it to clamp your work. But if these pieces were going to end up as scrap. Don’t cut them leave them to help you for clamping.
You don’t have to use that in every job you do
While I love the idea, the fact that it uses way more material eats into profits. With the material he started with could have two legs from the first piece hence not waste. Using clamping cauls would have been more practical/economical and since it seems like he'll be making more of these tables, reusable.
The end product looks fantastic.
It's brilliant, that's what that is. Definitely gonna use that on any and every chance I get.
I'm not anywhere near a craftsman in the art of wood working and my dad was a turn of the century
carpenter , he designed built and operated sawmills all around east Texas in the 40s-70s . I have had the love of trees logs rough sawn milled lumber etc in my b!ood since a young boy in the late 50s I can say with
all the confidence of a 71 year old man with a woodshop at my home, you are a craftsman in every sense of the word & a credit to the profession. Great stuff
Phenomenal video and build. From the progression of design, layout, solving the domino challenges (it isn't as simple as people think . . . as you know) to the finished piece. I think there is a lot to learn from this, for both new builders and experienced. Thank you for sharing. And one last note, I personally appreciate seeing work in "real time" as this video was all in "real time". Absolutely there is a place for "time lapse" but seeing the actual speed is a great reminder of the value of quality work and its relationship to time. Happy to be supporting your work.
When you are a craftsman, it shows right away. Everybody can make some tables but being unique it’s style. 😊
Thank you for your generosity in sharing what you do. It was pure pleasure to watch and gain inspiration in trying to equal what you do in the knowledge that you cannot be bettered!
Beautiful clean design, and what a wonderful workflow you have devised. Helps to have all those amazing tools too :)
Great work.. As I always say, don't criticize someone's work unless you can do it better. This is great.. and as for the tools, great taste no matter where you're starting from. Buy it once, buy it for life.
Thank you so much for the kind and wise words. I sincerely appreciate it :)
That is so beautiful, I really enjoyed your video from start to finish. So relaxing and very detailed , Love it thanks for Sharing
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to write such kind words. I truly appreciate it and I'm glad you liked it. Have a great day.
My feelings while watching the video cannot even be described, the excellent work of a skilled man. Thanks for the video.
Amazing project, I love it! Congratulations!!!
While there are a lot of expensive tools used, it's nice to see that you don't have to have a huge workshop. Beautiful work.
Obviously a labor of love. You are a man of details! Nice job, Greg!
Thank you, Travis. That perfectly describes the way I feel about making furniture. I appreciate that. I hope you guys are all doing well with the new little one :)
One of the very best instructional videos I have ever watched. Soft, nice music and not a bunch of endless banter! The illustrations are great. Love the usage of the template and router. Kudos!!
Thank you for the kind words, Johan. I appreciate it. I'm always torn between doing voiceovers, adding music, or just letting the sounds of the machines do the work. I'm glad you liked it.
Beautiful.
A true display of art and genuine passion. Great work as always, cant wait to see whats next.👍
Logan frog thank you so much for the kind words, Logan. I appreciate it. Thank you for watching. I’m hoping to get something out before another eight months pass. I have about seven builds and a few tool videos’ worth of footage to put out still. So little time :)
Wow! Beautiful design and craftsmanship. The video itself is very enjoyable to watch, thank you.
Superb!
This is completely a piece of art, I loved each part of the work. I'm getting into woodworking. I just saw your canal, it gives me a lot of inspiration. Just... Amazing. Well done, bro. 💯
Yay! Free plans!
Owl Head Wood Co. 😂
WOW.
thank you so much - it was wonderful to watch
amazing !
What a beautiful build and video. It's this sort of relaxed pace and execution of craftsmanship that keeps me motivated in my own shop
Thank you for the kind words, Allan. I appreciate it man. I'm glad to hear it.
Stunning!
Thank you, Jake.
It is great that you have come up with a unique design that works so well. Most woodworkers never get beyond copying a successful design. If you lose the metal drawer glides and develop your own system that works with your design, you are in the fine furniture category. You have the skills and patience to do it!
Thank you, Chip. I agree - the slides are my least favorite part, especially since they cover the dovetails on the side of the curly maple drawer.
Roaring, Hobbyist or Professional, what you spend and “invest” in, in the way of tools and machinery is your choice. I am surprised you haven’t been asked what car you drive.
Thank you for sharing the build of a beautiful piece of furniture. Hopefully it will inspire others to do the same.
There is no doubt you will succeed in your business.
Thank you for the positive words, George. I really appreciate it. I can't please everyone on here, and that's totally fine. I'm having fun in the shop, and I think looking back at footage helps me think more critically about my own work habits and designs.
Simply stunning, a true work of art. I think this would be beautiful in teak wood as well.
LINDÍSSIMA !!! PARABÉNS muito capricho.
You have really nice tools for a hobbyist. I’ve seen woodworking shops that don’t have half of what you have. I’m impressed.
If professional shops don’t have what they need, they aren’t charging properly. Great work can be done without really nice tools, but great tools allow great artisans to churn out pieces faster.
Glad this popped up on the suggestion feed. Great work and craftsmanship
Me too :) I swear, usually my videos are pretty stagnant for around a year but this one is doing well. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave the kind words. Thank you.
I love the grain continuity you did with the front drawers. I've been thinking about making a live edge black walnut with a mid century modern style twist here in the near future. Very nice, I love this.
Thank you, Timothy. You've got a good eye. That was the second set of drawer fronts I made for that particular table. The first ones had a weird knot that came apart when I was cutting the board into the individual drawer fronts. Since that was an Etsy order I decided to use a better looking piece. I'm really happy with how it turned out :) I sadly still haven't worked with any live edge slabs, but that sounds awesome. My neighbor cut down his walnut tree and very graciously gave it to me, and the slabs have been drying in my backyard for about a year and a half. They should be ready in another year or so and I can't wait to use them.
I love this table! And am so glad I finally started building my shop last year (at 40). I should have done it sooner, but will look forward to using it plenty now.
Thanks for the inspiration🤙🏽
I'm glad to hear it, Joshua. It's never too late or too early :)
That table is gorgeous, can't hate on your tool selection either. Your shop setup and tools themselves are downright drool-worthy, and I am completely envious.
Thank you, Kevin. It all started with a pocket hole jig and a drill. I don't know what happened after that :)
This is a super impressive build, great job! I feel inspired to make one of these more modern designs.
clean cuts and very cool design.... keep up the good work
Awsome job and Design. Love it😉
Thank you for the kind words. I appreciate it.
Fantastic design and amazing craftsmanship. Keep up the great work! Loved seeing the process.
Thank you so much, Drew. I sincerely appreciate the positivity.
Wow! What can i say, divine work!
Thank you so much for watching. I really appreciate the kind words.
Great work. Very inspiring! Thanks!
Beautiful work and such a pleasant process to watch.
Thank you, Ben. I appreciate the kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Beautiful video. Beautiful work.
Thank you, Brian - I appreciate it.
Beautiful, I love clean lines.
Thank you, Stewart. I do, too. I think that's what draws me to mid-century furniture. It's weirdly simple and complex all at once, and a fun challenge to make.
Dude, like I’ve said before. I want to grow up to be like you. Seriously nice work and I love the video. Keep up the great work!
Justin Woodworks too kind, Justin. Thanks man. I’m hoping to start posting more than once every eight months.
Awesome build
Yes sir. What a beauty.
KRIS. Thank you brother. Freaking hit me up next time you come to California!
Great video! 👏 I found you through suggested videos and I love your content, your videos are very informative. 🙌 😊 Keep up the great work! 💖
Nice one!
Cant tell you how many times I’ve watched this recently and been so inspired! I’m trying to turn my woodworking hobby into a business right now and this always inspires me so much thank you!
Awesome man. Stay at it. My Etsy store went crazy this year which is why I haven’t uploaded a video in seven months. It’s absolutely worth the effort.
@@theroaringwoodwork2213 do you have any tips for getting things going in the beginning? I don’t necessarily mean making wise as much as finding a market to sell in. I’m not really sure where to start. Thanks for replying!
Genio total. Soberbio trabajo!!.
I see Aphex Twin’s symbol
Good job!
The mirror in the shot at the end is stunning! Would love to see that come together
Seth Hubler thank you, Seth. That’s the Sayre Jewerly Armoire that I make. I’ve sold a couple now and they’re an intricate blast to make. I started editing the video for it right after I published the coffee table last week. I’m hoping to get it out soon.
Beautiful!
Well done😍😍
Thank you thank you :)
Beautiful piece and lovely video. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave the kind words, Brian. I sincerely appreciate it. I'm hoping to start posting videos more regularly, too.
Excellent work on the beautiful coffee table! Glad you finally finished the video.
SimpleCove thank you, Sean. I’m hoping to publish videos a little more frequently than every eight months. We’ll see :)
I love that you do not waste wood!!! Some youtuber's do not seem to care about using up wood in a careless way.
Walnut is too precious (and expensive) to waste. My offcuts turn into drawer pulls and door knobs, inlay pieces, or pens :)
I enjoyed watching this. Your attention to detail is amazing.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave the kind words, Mark. I sincerely appreciate it. It's hard not to completely zone in on woodworking - it's totally therapeutic for me :)
Very inspiring. And a very cool table. I am at a point in my life where most of my passion lies in carpentry and woodworking and I would like to pursue it through making new pieces and refinishing old and "unwanted" pieces as well. I am a general contractor and love building new homes, but tired of building and working on other people's homes. I want to just get into the shop and create, and get out on my OWN jobsite and create as well. Stay tuned as I start this process on RUclips as well. Great video man. Keep it up.
Hey Shane - Thank you for watching and leaving the kind words man. I appreciate that, and it goes a long way on here. I can relate to your creative desire, too. I just want to make things that I enjoy. That sounds like a great plan. I'm still figuring out this RUclips thing - I've only posted about once or twice a year at this point, but I'm hoping to do that more. I've filmed the last seven or eight pieces I've made, but haven't taken the time to edit. Time to get to work.
Interesting work with unusual shape. Many thanks for sharing.
I really enjoyed this video. thanks for sharing your process!
Thank you, Chris. I appreciate the kind words, and they go a long way on here. I'm still figuring out the whole video and RUclips thing, but it's a fun process once the tools are turned off for the day :)
Table..amazing! Graceful lines! Video production also amazing!!! The best of woodworking and of RUclips craftsmanship!
Thank you so much for the kind words and seriously high praise. I appreciate it greatly.
The Roaring Woodwork of course... u earned another subscriber. My future maker videos won’t nearly be as good. But your an inspiration with this video.
Very beautiful work 🧡💯🪵 inspirational
Fine piece of woodwork, lovely deign, quality never goes out of style. Cheers mate.
Thank you for the kind words, Darryl. That goes a long way on here and I sincerely appreciate it.
What an absolutely stunning piece...
Thank you for the kind words, Robert. I greatly appreciate it.
Beautiful work. I'm all about just watching a great build set to music and so many videos these days just are not done that way. Great job and looking forward to seeing many more from you.
Thank you for the kind words, Rick. I feel like I'm still figuring out my "style" when it comes to videos, but I try to keep it simple and employ the "show-don't-tell" approach. I'm already working on the next video, too :)
@@theroaringwoodwork2213 : You do nice work, so I've subscribed. I'm in the "tell & show" camp but, by all means, do what you're comfortable with.
Don’t have a house for the coffee table yet but man I appreciate the design and craftsmanship 👍
Mate, that's awesome - love, care and attention to detail = amazing.
Thank you so much, Lee. I very much appreciate the positivity.
I am a carpenter too, but I draw a lot of inspiration from your work.
I get a lot of inspiration for your work.
thank you.
Beautiful work. Nicely done!
Thank you for the kind words, Jonathan. I sincerely appreciate it.
Awesome work and beautiful video!!
Tommy Thériault thank you for watching and leaving the kind words. I very much appreciate it.
Awesome job
Thank you 🙏🏻
Beautiful work. I've been in the business for 30 plus years. I would have changed a couple things with construction, but there's always more then 1 way of doing things. Best of luck to you and keep the passion
Thank you kindly. I appreciate it. A lot of the stuff I post on RUclips is the "prototype" build. The second and third versions of everything just get better and better. I'm always learning more :)
Beautiful design. Also, Poe’s tattoo is on point :)
Thank you. I appreciate it. I am a high school English teacher by day and most of my tattoos are portraits or references to my favorite authors. The Poe tattoo has a vulture eye and a bloody throat. I love it :)
The music that individuals choose to back their videos with bespeak of their temperament and style of creation. This may be the first I've come across that made me sit back in my arm chair, just watch, and forget about time. Thanks for that--great craftsmanship and great video.
Ben - that is great to hear, and I am glad you liked it. I think I relaxed a little just reading that and thinking about relaxing :) Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave the kind words. I greatly appreciate it.
Gotta be the best video on precision woodworking
Wow, man. That is seriously high praise. Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave the kind words. I truly appreciate it. I'm hoping to post videos more frequently on here now that I'm getting the hang of editing.
Beautiful work! Both video and woodworking. Using playing cards as shims is brilliant. It's a trick I'll take away with me. Thanks!
Thank you. The cards are a great technique I picked up along the way. I keep two decks of cards in my tool cabinet :)
Absolutely stunning 👍👏👏 Beautiful table and great video. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much, John. I appreciate it. I'm hoping to make more time to post videos here :)
Beautiful dude
Thank you, Simon. Much appreciated man.
Such a beautiful table! Enjoyed the video.
Hey Bruce. Thank you. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and leave feedback. I'm already working on the next video :) Have a great weekend.
Very inspiring to watch :) Great job and very nicely made video. Looking forward to more!
Thank you, David. I appreciate that. I'm working away on the next video already :)
nice design you have there
Beautiful build; both design and execution...
Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
Really enjoyable video. The table is beautiful and your craftsmanship is stellar. Awesome!
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave the kind words. I very much appreciate it :)
Great job! I'm hoping to start making for money soon as well. So far my wife is my only (but repeat) customer. Gotta start somewhere! Keep up the good work!
Thank you. I really appreciate the kind words. My first commission was a pair of plywood bookshelves for my mom back in April of 2017. That's how I paid for my first couple of clamps. After that, it was some tables for the neighbors. And then it got crazy :)
Very impressive work!
Thank you, Gabriel. I appreciate the kind words.
Stunning workmanship, and expertly filmed/edited as well.
Thank you for the kind words. I greatly appreciate it. I'm still getting the hang of filming and editing, and trying to show an actual story. I hope it gets better :)
Beautiful work!
Thank you so much, Brian. I appreciate it.
Beautiful, man.
Thank you. I really appreciate it.
Awestruck by your creativity, work ethic, finished products. Well done dude.
Thank you for the kind words, Mark. I sincerely appreciate it.
Amazing work Greg! Thanks for showing your process
Bevelish Creations thank you, Alex. I appreciate it man. Sorry about all the Festool 😂
The Roaring Woodwork damn festools. How dare you use Festool and call yourself a hobbyist??
Beautiful table and a video to match. Well done for turning a passion into a business :)
Thank you so much for taking the time to say that. I truly appreciate it. I'm a high school teacher by day, and all of my woodworking profits pay for the summer months "off" when I don't get a paycheck. It's a good system :)
Very nice piece, great workmanship. You should be proud of that effort.
Thank you for watching and leaving the kind words. I very much appreciate it.
Awesome build!!
Thank you for watching and taking the time to leave the kind words, Jordan. I appreciate it. I'll have another one soon :)
Congratulations. Beautiful table. Great video.
Thank you for watching, Craig. Much appreciated.
Gorgeous piece of furniture!
Thank you for watching and for taking the time to leave the positive words, Shon. I appreciate it.
Very nice work. I’m amazed at how well you made the pieces to fit together perfectly. Also, I am thinking as much effort went together to film, edit and put together this video. Very professional.
Thank you for the kind words, Tom. I really appreciate it. I filmed this almost two years ago, but I finally sat down to edit it. I've got two years' worth of footage and builds to go :)
What a great video to watch with your morning cup of coffee wishing you had an end table to set it on.
I've got an Etsy store for that :) haha thank you for watching. I appreciate it.
great idea notching it for the clamps. I'm keeping that one! thanks
I learned from the master - Jory Brigham ruclips.net/video/1UogI_3i-AY/видео.html
great video and beautiful table mate
Thank you for the kind words, Sean. I appreciate it man.
Good job
This is amazing, Greast skills great tools. Love the job you done. Congratultion.
Thank you, Adrian. I truly appreciate it. Have a great weekend.
