This is my design for a coffee table with a hardwood base and a plywood box with open shelves for the table top. This is my first time using oak and I had to do a lot of hand planing and thickness planing before I could cut it down to size I wanted but I really like the result and really enjoyed working with oak.
The plywood has a high pressure laminate on the faces which gives it some good protection and the white gives a nice contrast with the oak. I decided to leave the edges of the plywood visible instead of edge banding.
The plywood I used:

This table arrived well packaged and on time. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxn94T8Mu1iMnsLCMNOI9srXSsLkI4JXKW Like another reviewer advised, I pulled everything out and made sure everything was included (everything was!). I built it alone and it took me about an hour. The color is great and for the price the lift part works well. As others have mentioned, it’s not the smoothest opening/closing, but it works. The screws do show, but I plan to order white sticker covers if that bothers us too much. Really happy with this table! UPDATE: it’s been over a year since we got this coffee table and we still love it! It gets HEAVY use as our dining table, foot rest, and school desk. Over time, the opening and closing mechanism has gotten smoother. I added a new photo with the white screw cover stickers. They blend in perfectly and make it look a little cleaner. 100% recommend!!!
a beautifully well done masterpiece! It looks like something I would find in a show room or magazine. Awesome!
It's crazy how simple and clean it looks, but, meanwhile, you see the all making process you realize that it's a lot of work, or steps to make that coffee table. I'm not totally in love with it, but I have to admit that is pretty well made and finished.
That corner clamping technique is brilliant! Project looks great.
I love the table and the sounds of only the processes and power tools is AWESOME!
I watch an embarrassing amount of woodworking videos on RUclips, all the main guys just slap something together to pump out content. This was beautifully crafted well done 👍
Really nice work. Great attention to detail and the overall design is subtle but beautiful.
Love the design! And it is nice to see more people using the plywood edges as a design feature instead of covering it up. Very brave and a success in this case!
My love is mid-century modern (childhood memories) and you do exquisite work.
BTW, ignore all those downward thumb votes that are just mean because they must be jealous of your expertise and your ability to do great work with a minimum of expensive tools.
Really gorgeous piece. The router clamped to the table scares the bejeezus out of me! Cheers.
Thanks! Haha fair enough. I made sure it was secured to the bench really well and I was very careful and took my time with it.
@@TheOffcut Oh but please make a small router table or case. Thats so uselessly dangerous I cringed xD
@@TheOffcut Loved it, but scrolled down to see if someone would mention this. It's been 3 years, hope you've made a table!
That's so clean! Well done! With all the work it takes, now I know why Ikea is so popular.
holy smokes, you got my like and subscribe at the moment I saw you leveling the wood by hand.
great build, man: thorough overview of your steps, lots of care, and a cool design. thanks!
lovely design and your build was inspiring to watch. thanks for sharing
That was absolutely Brilliant. You have Designed and built a really nice piece of furniture with great skills and perfection. Thank you for sharing..
Beautiful design, and great execution.
Beautiful job. So many great techniques used and so clean.
Great work, loving the design.
when i first saw the thumbnail, i thought this was a @foureyesfurniture Chris Salomone piece! Definitely a compliment in my book. Strong work.
Awesome Workmanship, Great Table ❤️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️
Really nice piece of work! Love it - and your taper jig. The design is just lovely.
Thank you! :D
Man, that is so incredibly nice! I don't even know where to start! Bravo!
Haha thank you very much :)
I always enjoy watching these videos. What a craftmanship...!
Awesome design! That oak frame is gourgeous! good job!
From that cupped board to that oak base - superb.
Love your work. This project came out superb! Worth a sub I think.
Wow I'm in love with your work man! It is amazing! 👌 congratulations
Well done! Appreciate your attention to detail!
I love that you let the plywood edges show.
Quality craftsmanship.
Well, I am really happy to see you have moved your shop to a new level (bought new tools and in general have everything to make your life in the shop easier).. this shows that you have had your work appreciated and finally got some money from it.. congratulations my friend! As for this masterpiece, I do not have much to say.. just beautiful!
Thank you very much!! Really appreciate it. There is still a lot more that I want to do to my shop to make it even better. I do what I can to put more money into my small shop. Slow and steady. Maybe not that steady :P
Wonderful job, was a good watch on a Sunday morning. Keep up the great work.
Cheers Terry!
Very nice and I liked the plywood table too. Reminds me of Chris Salomones pieces a bit. Which is definitely not a bad thing :)
Cheers!
Absolutely fantastic job as usual.
Nice design, awesome work!!
Wow!... I thoroughly love that piece great job😉😉
Beautiful design, turned out great
Really nicely done! I like the design of this one a lot!
Nice clean, simple project. Well done.
Looks great! Some smart clamping there.
Excellent work, love the design, you have talent my friend. Had heart failure with the router held to bench with two squeeze clamps. Bit of ply or an old counter top and make a quick table for these operations. That way we can enjoy your ten fingered efforts for years to come.
Amazingly beautiful!
Nice Work! I also love your tappering jig, I'm going to make one just like it :)
Another beautiful beautiful piece and a very educational. Thank you and have a wonderful day.
Thank you :)
Love that coffee table
Fantastic! awesome job!
That looks amazing !
one word: Beautiful!
Dude! I built a similar piece, but it was bigger for my big screen tv. I now feel as if I put mine together with a butter knife and a hammer. Love your technique and will try to apply some of that to my own.
This trule is one of nicest builds Ive come a cross in youtube. Thx for ideas and will build something similar soon!
Wow thank you so much!
Nice work. I would totally use this design as a tv console.
LINDA !! ADOREI PARABÉNS !!! trabalho incrível.
Awesome work as usual!!
You do good work sir. Much respect.
Nice video. No talking, no music. Just work. Thanks.
Simple but perpectly beautiful!👍😊
I really like that you used actual joinery and not pocket holes :D
It would have been a crime to use pocket holes!
I agree. Pocket holes take all the attractiveness of any nice piece of furniture.
impossible 9 Thank goodness it's not just me that dislikes pocket holes..... dislike a lot! :-)
Screws and dowels though... that ain't gonna last very long.
Really nice design mate! I always watch woodworking vids at double time just due to the sheer amount of content out there but I went back to normal speed for your vid as the style, speed and editing was great. Got a new sub from Australia - looking forward to your next vid! Now I will be unashamedly binge watching your channel for the rest of the afternoon.
Cheers
Hahaha cheers! Appreciate it!
excellent work, a very good finish.
FANTASTIC
you are very efficient worker :) Joke a side, the furniture looks great.
This is beautifull. I want one piece.
Loving the channel man, nice work!
Cheers Robert!
Great simple design
Beautiful work
Очень много кропотливого труда, а получился заурядный на вид столик, который в магазине пройдешь мимо. Сам процесс изготовления понравился. Получается, делать ради того чтоб делать. Палец вверх поставил, молодец.
Great design!
Really beautiful
Genial y fácil. Desde Lebu Chile saludos
Increíblemente hermoso que buen trabajo excelente factura¡¡¡¡¡¡
This looks awesome! You got yourself a new subscriber!
really cool design
Beatifull work!!!
Clamping jig at 5:18 is A+
Definitely! Saves me so much hassle trying to clamp those joints
I was so impressed with that clamping method I've made some of my own. I'm making some tapered and angled legs for a side table and up til now they were impossible to clamp.
Exactly what I was going to say, really cool jig, need to build one myself!
That's beautiful
Nice! Great work!
Excellent design and execution. Seriously I think you did everything right. You know sometimes one does a project that end up great but along the way they skimped on a few minor details that no one would ever notice. We do that because a lot of the time it's not worth it to go the extra sanding mile or what have you. Not here though. I think your design allows for getting it done 100% without sacrificing time. I love it!
Thanks Jared! This was definitely a time consuming project! I'm glad to see people appreciating the time and effort I put into it :D
Oh man that router guide was a genius idea! Cutting the groove in the cross piece that is. I haven't seen anyone do that before and i don't know why, maybe it's just something everyone assumes everyone else knows..
denno021 haha thanks. It is a very simple and helpful jig for lining up the router bit, stops me having to measure the distance from the bit to the base of the router
Love that!
Very nice, well done!
Wow, great design, great filming, great editing. Keep up the great work. : )
Thanks very much!
Nice build and a cool design! :)
Great! Suggestion: show the project sketches before! Congrats
Wow Very nice good job 👍👍👍
man u make it look so easy wish i had those equipment too :( bit expensive out here in cyprus
wow man, I am super impressed with your work. you're super smart with your workflow and you have an amazing eye for design. You make some amazing work in your tiny garage, even people with massive shops can't compete. I could easily compare you to someone like Homemade Modern. Well done, That table is beautiful and very well executed.
Wow thank you so much! You are too kind!
I appreciate the comments. Ben from Homemade Modern has a different design approach to his projects. his projects focus on simplicity, accessibility and availability for people with limited tools and skills, which he does it really well. Even though his channel is huge and has grown really well he still chooses to use minimal tools and processes because of this approach. My channel is about my own personal growth as a woodworker and RUclipsr so I choose/want to focus on developing my skills and abilities with different methods and tools which can lead to more intricate designs. Riyadh Marthinus's comparison to me and Homemade Modern might not be about the product itself, he could be referring to our video style, work flow, or even our good looks (hopefully *cough cough*).
Last Minute Thoughts hahahahaha it was definitely the good looks!
Ahhh thought so! Hahaha
Make Jagger Totally agree with your comment.....
Congrats... Very beautifull
Beautiful
Beautiful.
Beautiful Work
Sos un genio!! Desde la patagonia argentina
felicidades, excelente trabajo
Хорошая работа. Красивая мебель.
gran trabajo!
You did not conceal the edge of the plywood, instead you’ve shown it’s beauty. I love it 😍
Winner of a video, been searching for "what is the best wood to make a dining table?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you heard people talk about - Fenadelyn Esteemed Framework - (just google it )?
It is a great exclusive product for discovering how to improve your woodworking skills without the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my cousin got cool success with it.
Great Work !!!
Vou tentar fazer um aqui tbm.
Gostei
Good clean fun!
Are you able to teach me your process in connecting the middle piece of legs to the two attaching pieces? Any tips and tricks would be helpful. Thanks
Great job !!!.
