    Keep in mind the ability to steal herdables is based on the Táin Bó Cúailnge, the ancient Irish mythological tale about a war fought to steal a bull from Ulster. In the story, Cú Culainn must fight the invading army alone. Cattle raids were common in ancient Ireland since cattle were used as a currency.
    I've heard that the Celt's siege bonuses were based on the Battle of Alesia. Caesar surrounded and besieged the walled Gallic city of Alesia by encircling it with walls, towers and fortifications. His army was then in turn surrounded and besiged by an arriving Gallic army. The Romans built a second ring of fortifcations facing the opposite way to defend from this relief army. Eventually the Celts lost this battle, but apparently learned a lot about siege weapons?
    The increased wood chopping rate could be a reference to the fact that Ireland was once completely covered in dense forest, but now is one of least forested countries in Europe.
    The increased infantry speed might be inspired by ancient and medieval Irish warriors who would go into battle with no armour or sometimes completely naked so that they could run faster, out-manouver and fight longer than their enemies who relied on heavy armour.
    The stronghold tech could simply be a reference to the many castles throughout Ireland that survive to this day, many in good condition (St. John's castle in Limerick, Barryscourt Castle in Cork).
    Finally the Woad Warrior is probably based on the descriptions of the Picts who were said to paint themselves with a blue dye, possibly made from the Woad plant which is still used to dye wool especially by hobbyists. Also Braveheart was popular in the late 90's!

    • @Fastwinstondoom
      @Fastwinstondoom 9 месяцев назад +12

      Cattle-raiding was a pretty popular thing in the scotland all the way into the 1800s. There's a book I read a few years ago called School of the Moon that has a bunch of short folk tales from around that time, was a fun read.

    • @paulodelima5705
      @paulodelima5705 9 месяцев назад +6

      Those who went naked to fights were the gauls, from the region of France. The stronghold tech is related to the high number of castles in region, a small region. Most bonus are just for balance.

    Actually wood bonus in late game can feel not as insignificant, since celts have access to Crop Rotation and you don't pay for Two-Man Saw, so you would be probably getting CR and players even in a long games tend to forget CR which can be beneficial to wood collection. Although it is not a "hard bonus".

Which uses dichotomy to explain the fundament flaw in Plagueis thinking. In which he is so concerned with immortality that he can’t foresee his own death at the hand of his apprentice. 0:30 I will guess that in 1v1, they win via early harass. While their late game stuff is strong, but too gold dependant.
    In Team games, harassing is not good at finishing off the enemy, but they have gold from trade for their lategame stuff.
    5:30 I did not epect a infantry rush and sheep stealing as their secret sauce, but otherwise I seem right for early game.
    10:25 I am not sure if I called that one right. Nothing there seems particularly gold heavy.

    • @jasonsmith1950
      @jasonsmith1950 9 месяцев назад +1

      Early game, pretty much a good eco bonus, good infantry (and other feudal) harassment options, and a killer siege push to end the game in early castle. Late game, siege is expensive with several expensive upgrades - which makes them harder to afford in 1v1, similar to how the Paladin upgrade is too expensive to be worthwhile for most 1v1 games, but almost always is in team games. They also have Paladins (which may be lackluster, but are still Paladins, making them pretty strong) - though infantry late-game may be better (or at least easier to tech into) even if it is almost generic (outside of infantry UU). But basically, siege is expensive to tech into (1000 gold for Siege Onager is a lot, and that doesn't include the 500 gold for Onager), and team games tend to last longer, meaning that you're more likely to justify the value of expensive technologies. And siege units themselves can be a bit gold-heavy (with each onager taking 135 gold). But it is hard to argue that siege isn't pop-efficient (which is important once you hit max pop).

      @@davidpereira5969 That's more of a tier list thing, while SotL is using a grading system. Personally I prefer numerical system either an out of 5 or 10. It is what it is. (Kind of funny, SotL loves his numbers and stats, uses a letter grading system).

      @@SpiritOfTheLaw this hits so good. I searched a bit after this comment and I heard a myth about version with vocals. Is that freely available to listen to, or is that too personal to share?

    I kinda wish they expanded the celts infantry speed bonus by giving them 10 percent faster as bonus instead of 15 percent, but gave them squires as well. That way they'd be a bit more special in Castle Age and Imperial

      Either that or make so it scales to 20% in either Castle or Imperial

    Hey.
    Which civ would be the strongest in an All Techs game? And yes, all civs can become unbalanced nightmares when they have an unique +3 Something tech but don't get the standard +2 Something for 'balance'. You let them have the +2 Something, and that is when they effectively have a real +3 Something tech.

    There's a pretty obvious question that I'm kind of surprised you didn't answer in this vid:
    "Did all of your units make it to the flag?"

    Oh, yes, the most likely very first civ played by AoE II players, though AoE I veterans may have skipped the tutorial due to lots of experience and the fact that some new elements like garrisoning aren't actually that hard to figure out.

    I feel like they either need to make sheep and other herdables trainable, like in AOE3, or they should as you said remove the Celt bonus for stealing herdables, as it either is never used, or it feel kinda mean and unfair.
    If herdables were common, it would be used more often and it would feel less mean to steal them.
