Found a dehydrated fledgling crow in the middle of the street. Helped it out of the street unto some nearby grass. It was a highly trafficked area with cars and pedestrians. When it was clear that the bird was in distress, i scooped it up and brought it to a rehab. Luckily, there were 2 other baby crows there and an adult. A few weeks later, the rehab told me that the birds bonded and were released together.
    W00t!
    Erm, i mean Caw Caw!

She just said right before that that they will do everything they can to help an animal. When she says sometimes it's better to let nature take it's course, she means that there's no way of helping the animal. Please consider the extreme stress the bird will experience when a human picks them up and they're hurt so they can't get away. Trying to save an animal that can't be saved will just make them suffer more. That's why you should call someone who knows enough about birds to be able to tell when it's not worth trying.

She didn't mention that fledglings are likely to be eaten by feral cats and other predators when you leave them on the ground ( when they can't actually fly yet.) Maybe my mistake, but i have a hard time abandoning an animal if I know its helpless. The "nature take its course' angle doesn't work for me, and I certainly would never feel that way about a human life. Animals are Gods creatures as well and deserve all the help they can get.

I volunteered at a wildlife rehab center in Minnesota and specifically worked in the avian nursery. It was such an amazing experience, and I hope I can do something similar in the future. I have a nestling I saved yesterday. The nest is so too far up just as a the branches are. I'm disabled and can't even begin to get this bird up. I asked neighbors and they all had an excuse or looked at me like I was insane. Well, maybe I am insane but at least I'm not a ? Hole little bit@h.
I called the wildlife rehabilitation she is talking about. It's about 2 hours from my house. I would drive this little bird myself but I don't have a car and it's too far for me to drive on my medications anyway. They wouldn't even consider asking if any of their people who are close and going that way to come get the bird to take there. I was also told it was illegal for me to have wildlife. So, I said oh well I will just put it back where I found it. She said no it will die for sure if I do that. So, yesterday I watched for parents and safety until it was getting late. I brought it in and made a cat food wet food paste in a med dropper and it ate it. Now it is the next evening and I'm exhausted after all the feedings and phone calls for help. But, it's alive, pooping, active and its eyes just opened. No fluff. Red skin, wobbly and has a good appetite. I'm getting a iui worms right now for it. I don't want to do this. Yet the alternative is certain death or should I say it is nature taking her course. We can't save them all but we can care enough to do our best when possible. I have the time to care but not all the knowledge. Just what I find online.
I'm in new ulm mn. And somewhat new to the area so I don't know hardly anyone. So I ask ... If any kind hearted soul out there is able to take her to the wildlife refuge it would mean the world to me and this little bird.

On the way home from school today I found a little baby bird that had fallen out of a tree and it was laying upside down in a deep puddle so I picked it up and took it home and kept it in a box full of bedding but me and my Nan found that it had many injuries so we took it to the vets in Crowthorne and they took it away and said that I had been a very kind hearted person for saving it but sadly after we got back from the vets they gave my Nan a call saying they had to get it put down because it was suffering and I am 12 years old and my parents and my Nan are very proud of me.

Deeply appreciate your advise .. clear and to the point. I saw a small fledgling bird (now I know what this is :)) on the sidewalk and I was worried that cats would get it. So I took it back home in a warm and quite place and went out again to complete my dog walk which took another 15 min .. went back and immediately searched for advise and saw your video .. so I took it back to where I found it .. it was clinching on my finger so I had to find a small dead twig for it to hold on to, and placed it on top of high enough street box .. as I walked away a few meters I turned back and law and behold, one of the parents went down to check on it and was chirping at it :)
Thank you once more .. glad you made this video and glad I found it!

Thanks for your information! My mum has once “rescued” a baby bird home from a park (a fledging one I guess), but we soon realized that the baby bird was not injured as we thought it was, it might probably be hiding from predators only (that’s why it looked lost and does not move at all). Also we had no idea about the follow up actions to help it neither. I think it’s really important to have these kinds of educational materials for urban people to understand how to interact with our nature properly, especially when the urban area is expanding and intercrossing more with the wildlife. Thanks again for your video!

I found a baby bird that looked about a week old. I week later after we found him he was doing so well! He was opening his eyes and moving and chirping! We were so happy to see him fly! On day 7 we noticed a red bump in his neck like the one on the picture before you click on the video. Idk what it’s called but anyway. Today is day 8 and this morning he wasn’t moving and bagging for food as usual so I picked him up and he wasn’t moving at all. I saw his chest go up and down once in a while but I thought he was dead. On his lower stomach felt flat and like a deflated balloon but still had stuff in it. I cried for about ( minutes and went to tell my mom. She came out and rubbed his chest and about 5 minutes later he slowly opened his eyes. I thought he would survive! I had so much hope and was praying he would be ok. About 1” minutes later his eyes were closed again and he wasn’t breathing. I cried for so long but he was gone. We buried him. My point of this comment is was there was a piece of worm stuck to the lump on his neck and it looked a little bloody. His poop also had a tiny bit of blood once is a while. I’m not sure if the lump on his neck is natural or not? We are not sure is he was kicked out of his nest or fell out but if he was kicked out maybe his mom thought he wouldn’t make it or something was wrong with him. The mom is still going up to the nest at the top of our tree and feeding her other baby’s. Does anyone know the answer to this if you do please reply I would love to know! Thank you!

fledglings are not abandon or in any danger unless he has a broken wing..fledgling are a stage were he's leaving the nest and the parent will feed him when ever they find food for him..you'll know a fledgling because they will be able to fly a few feet and hops around ... he;s semi full feathers, but just short... these fledgling are not birds you want to take in and raise it, because the parent is still feeding him..if you hand reared a baby bird from the wild, you better keep him til he dies or else just leave him to nature, because hand reared baby birds don;t have the knowledge to survive and gather food or knows how to protect itself from danger.. even though he's full grown and eating on his own that doesn't mean him knows how to survive in the wild..he'll just die from starvation unless you put him outside with a cage and put seed for him to eat and transition slowly to the wild, but most will not make it unless you supply it with seed or food.

I once found a blackbird fledgling (back when I didn't know what a fledgling was, I just knew it wasn't an adult yet) on my way home from school, which was 2 towns over. I carefully scooped it up and put it in my bicycle basket and took it home to call a rehabilitation center for help. I knew it was very dangerous for it to stay there since I found it open and exposed on the sidewalk with only very thin bushes near. When I called the center, I was told to put it back near some foliage and I did. Sadly, a few days later, I found a dead bird that had been ran over by a car. I really hope that wasn't the bird I found.

Some years ago I found a fox that seemed to have had a concussion on the side of a public street. I gathered it up in a crate and took it home after making sure it wouldn't bite. Once home I put it in a drawer with a blanket. It started to sleep so I was able to check it. The only thing I found was a small amount of dried blood on an ear and a belly full of fleas. That proceeding night I carefully collected it up and transferred it to the bathtub. It seemed to be regaining consciousness. Then it scrambled out of the tub and as I backed off it lept onto my leg...I thought, this was it. I'm about to get rabies. However it slumped onto my shin and slid down, obviously still hurt. At that point I swaddled it in a blanket then walked half a mile into the woods nearby and set it loose. The poor thing stood on shakey legs then crawled into some blackberries. It was a one off moment. I don't recommend it. I just didn't have anyone to contact at the time and felt it was the best thing to do.

I just found 4 baby birds this morning (fledgling) 😊..it's raining so i found them tucked in a not so deep corner near my fence in my yard. I'll just leave them alone like you've advised. I only placed a glass sheet over them to prevent heavy splashes of water. I also noticed their mum in the trees around. I hope they find strength and fly away 🙏. I'm still watching and observing. Thanks

I found a baby bluejay last month, he was a fledgling. I watched for a while and saw he could only fly a few feet. He was in a bush that was way too close to the ground and many predators.. he was having a hard time caugh in the branches.. the adults didn't yet know that he tried to fly from the nest and failed. I gently caught him, and kept him safe till my husband finished mowing the lawn. Presently, I saw that he had not two but had FOUR adult birds caring for him, and they were watching me carefully from above. Adults will always feed, protect and nurture fledglings that are on the ground but not quite able to fly. Most bluejays will help raise the offspring of other bluejays nearby (they are probably siblings - their families stick together!) They seemed to know I was not going to hurt the baby, but they watched me closely - no swooping or defensive posturing. I placed him on a branch high up and waited till i knew they saw where he was. The one Jay came very close to look at me, then the baby, then at me several times as if to say "Okay, I see him, I'll take over now!".
Of course, the juveniles attempts at flying had him back on the ground right away. I followed at a distance as the adults kind of corralled him to a safe spot for the night. The next day and for days later, I recognized his little bluejay "jeer" song, so I knew he was safe with the four adults looking after him. Fast forward 3 1/2 weeks and he (or she?) is now a handsome visitor to my feeding posts. I can tell when he us nearby because his new skill - the "pumphandle" call (or the "squeaky gate" call) still needs practice before he can make the sound strong like the others! You can tell he is still juvenile because he sneeks up and right quick he greedily steals the large peanuts - while the older males are patiently choosing choice bits to store in their crops for their mates! I love the bluejays. While I had him temporarily in a shoebox, the parents made such mournful cries from the closest trees when they could not see or hear him, it just broke my heart! It was then I knew I absolutely had to put him back up somewhere safe by the adults. I though I was going to have to keep him safe, warm and fed fir at least a few days but when I saw how concerned and frantic the parents were, there was no question of keeping him longer than the time it took to mow the lawn. Thankfully, he is still with us today. When I was 17 (a very long time ago) we found a nesling robin with enough feathers that we knew he would survive. Although he was free to leave as soon as he coukd fly, he became a beloved member of the family. Every day he ventured a little farther from home, till the one day he that he never came back. We still saw him once in a while, but he kept his distance. What a sweet, smart little bird he was. My mother was his favorite person and I think it was because my mother was such a sweet and lovibg person herself. I will always love robins because of this.
Anyway, my best advice - which is in agreement with this video - is to make sure the baby is uninjured, healthy and safe and that adults are indeed looking for it, and put it safely near where you found him. If it is a nestling (no flight feathers yet) then get it to an avian rehab center unless you know exactly how to feed and care for its kind. The robin we found recieved proper care because we had a neighbor who knew all about robins - what to and what not to feed them, how to keep them clean (they poop of course!) And how to safely handle them. He was a bird expert, otherwise we might have brought the nestling to the proper place. We did not have internet back then, but today, you must make sure you get your info from reliable websites. Let an expert take over! Its the best thing to do!

I would love for there to be one on kittens so people learn the difference between kittens that are in distress or kittens that people found that are being cared for by a great mom who has gone hunting for food and will be back for them. People think they should pick up every baby they find but it’s more difficult to raise orphans and if they’re taken the the pound they’re usually euthanized within a day of arrival.

    • @rutgerw.

Gone hunting for fledglings you mean? Cats don't belong in nature so if people find a stray cat it should be taken to some place where it can't hurt any more birdies!

I'm sorry, cats don't belong in nature? they belong in space then? I'm glad there are cats that keep the pigeon population in check and also mouses... Birds aren't more important than cats. They are food. what about those poor insects and worms they eat, should we shoo the birds away?

    • @ShadeSlayer1911
      @ShadeSlayer1911 6 лет назад +4

I think what he means is that house cats kill way too many birds and have caused many native species to go extinct. It really is better to keep them as indoor cats. Birds are not more important than cats, but when you got a non-native species that is killing off tons of native ones, then you gotta do something about it and not just pretend that it's okay.
And please don't try to misunderstand what people mean when they say stuff like this. You might have a bias for cats, but native bird populations have been seriously hurt by them. Keep them indoors.

If we left it there it would’ve got hit by a car,no animal shelters have taken him in yet!
We’ve been feeding him and taking him outside to learn how to hunt and all that kind of stuff..

Word. I loathe people who believe that their cats should be free to roam, that somehow keeping them inside is being cruel. Cats are not a natural part of the environment - they have been subjected to artificial selection, and are exactly as humans made them (though they retain elements of their natural instinct, elements that were not bred out of them because humans used/use them for pest control). They DO NOT BELONG on their own, wandering the streets. Billions of animals worldwide are killed by "outdoor cats" annually. It's not the cat's fault - they're doing exactly what their instinct is telling them to. *It is people's fault.* I support any legislation anywhere that makes it a crime to let cats wander outside without leashes or supervision. Dogs are already banned from doing this - why should cats be any different? And yet this exception to the rules of pet ownership is carved out in so many cities/municipalities. It's ridiculous, and it needs to stop.

When I was 9 my mom and I were walking home from the bus stop after school and we found two baby pigeons on the ground in front of our porch being devoured by ants. There was no parent of these little guys to be seen. My mom and I were horrified, thinking that both of the birds were dead. However, one of them were alive. My mom scooped the alive bird up and went inside to wash the ants off of it. We prepared a little box for it and took it to a person who knew about birds (he was rehabilitating birds or something). I'm really happy my mom looked closer and saw that one of the birds was still alive, because we probably would've left them to die if she hadn't.

I just saved two laughing dove fledglings. Their mom wasn't around and they were on the ground. They looked too young to start flying so I put them back in the nest. I would have left them if they had been a little older. Because all the fledglings I see flying are much bigger, these ones hadn't even got their full plumage so I assumed they fell out by mistake.

We found a nestling at a lake. The workers there said he was hanging from his nest by his leg and they cut him free and put him back but he fell out again. (Don't tell me it was a fledgling it wasn't. His wing and tail feathers were not in at all and he was un balanced and couldn't feed himself) This was a busy lake and he almost got stepped on. We placed him at the bottom of his tree and left him and watched for an hour or so from a ways away for his mum to come help him but she didn't. By this time the lake was no longer packed and we were the only people there. We asked the workers if they had a plan and they said that they wanted someone to take him. (This is wrong but if they were going to give him to someone at least I knew I had the patience, experience and supplies to take him whereas someone might take him for a pet and end up hurting him from a lack of research. So I took him.) We got him home and discovered he had bird mites. REALLY BAD! (Mites infest the nest so thats probably the reason he kept jumping out.) cleaned his entire cage 2 times a day and bathed him gently with bird safe soap. (We put him in our sun room. Lots of sun away from our other pets. Especially our other birds. If you bring a new bird home no matter where you got it from always keep it quartined from your other birds for about a month or more to be safe.) He slowly started walking and flying and feeding himself. Now we have to realise him. We let him go he enjoyed it for about a day before we found him again under a bush near our house. His foot was hurt. We have no idea what happened to him but his foot is very swollen and hurt. One day while I was cleaning the sun room I placed him outside so he could enjoy the sun. Thats when he flew and landed on a rock and started singing and being a goof before falling into our small built in pond. I fished him out and dried him. Now he won't leave and his foot is worse. (We are in the process of becoming rehabilitators for our state but Coronavirus is making it difficult but once we can we will finish) we have decided that we are going to be building him a large outdoor cage for him to heal and learn to catch food in and get used to being outdoors. His name is Glendale and he is very clumsy so he is going to be hard to release but we are doing everything we can to help him! (Anyone have tips on what to do? We have helped animals before but he is possibly the most accident prone bird ever! Also his cage we are building is large enough for me 5' 10" to walk into and sit in. He will have all natural branches and food and water in his cage. Once he is thriving in this cage we will open it so he can leave if he wants but always has a safe place to stay in if he needs it) 💕🐦

It’s also September so it’s mother probably isn’t coming back for it anytime soon. We fed him grass seeds and homemade bird food, he drinks out of an aquafina bottle cap because he is a small fella. He nibbles his food and drinks his water. He lives in a shoebox with proper bedding from leaves and grass. Will he live? (I’m using the pronoun ‘him’ but we don’t actually know it’s gender.)

I found a baby bird that has few baby feathers and can bearly stand on its own, but he was running inside a supermarket.
He’s so smal he can’t even fly yet.
I was scared someone would squish it on accident. So I grabbed him and placed him on a box while I looked for its nest but I couldn’t find it…
I kept him so I could call someone who actually know something about birds and they told me they didn’t know how to treat baby birds and that I had to keep him for a month and help him grow…. He is now my child.
