Agonising to watch the space combat and all the self-same mistakes I made in the early days of this game :). For anyone else struggling with the turns in combat - keep your speed in that midrange "sweet spot" for best maneuverability.
Ship combat tips: -Don't forget your missiles. They typically do equal damage to both shields and hull. -Use your thrusters to help maneuver. You can hold the thruster button to coast in one direction while spinning on your axis, effectively reversing at full speed, keeping your weapons pointed towards the enemy. -Reduce throttle from max thrust when maneuvering without thrusters. The light middle part of the thrust guage shows where your ship is most agile in turns. -If you are right behind an enemy and they are going slowly, do not boost in front of them. Their weapons are mounted to the front, so if you get in front of them, they can keep shooting you. -There are times when your weapons lose auto tracking. They are boosting at this point. Hold your fire to let your weapons recharge and boost to stay in range instead. Once the weapons re-lock, resume firing
Elite, SC and my others have dedicated buttons for power distribtion. for exampel an arrow key/dpad ups engine, shields or weapons and down arrow resets it. The Starfiled system is super cumbersome. Grav drive for example should just use power automatically when you jump (becausre then you dont shoot). It doesn't need to be in there at all. What they straight up borrowed from these games is that your speed needs to be in the highlighted section (bottom left of the circle) for max maneuverability. Too low or high and you hardly turn. Like around 4:00 or 25:15. At around 9:00 you see how quickly the ship turns while the speed is just in the middle. As in many things, the game doesn't really explain that well. It does in the brief lecture from Vasco which is easy to miss in the state of early overwhelmedness™ I leave engine power mostly in the middle and boost when i need distance and set enough power for everything and not fiddle with it. If the flying were more of a (complex) thing in the game i'd look into mods and joystick controls but vanilla is not really worth the effort for me. Btw talking of borrowing common systems, i'm kinda surprised people don't have the idea to lock onto debris to loot. Or a station to dock. All the space games do that. Both Gopher and Matn try to bump into it instead. But with Gopher you never know if it's maybe a intentional realism/rp/immersion thing.
I have to repair this ship. I have to get back to civilization very soon. Yes & Yes! Listen to your instincts. You're no good to the person you're trying to rescue when your dead. Its like running towards another fight without bothering to heal up when your half dead.
Something I learned the hard way in SWG space flight is that there is a sweet spot of engine speed for maneuverability. In Starfield, they have it marked right on that speed scale in the lower left of the HUD circle. It is the area highlighted in white. If you go too fast, you will be flying in large circles while trying to get the enemy in view. Then they take free shots at you. If you are going too slowly, turns will be tight, but slower. Stay in the highlighted zone for maximum maneuverability!
I will say nothing except do the Mantis mission. or even do the free star ranger quest line it's fun and you end up with great rewards. the Mantis mission is also worth the effort in the early game.
Your ability to turn depends on how much thrust you are applying. On the left side of your reticule there is a speed bar. if you are in the white portion to the center you are at your best turn rate. You need speed adjustments during a fight.
Your issue with space combat is not the ship it is your piloting. Using boost reduces your maneuverability and your speed should be in the middle to increase turn speed. So keep your speed in the center and only use boost briefly to shake a tail. Trying to stay behind them. And use the E to access debris.
Make sure you use E to highlight the space debris instead of swirling around it with the cursor. When you are within 500 KM the contents will show up for you to see, if selected. There are thin white arrows pointing to where the destroyed ships are and thicker white arrows if there are other friendly ships in the area. Also, stop by every general vendor on your way and buy extra ship parts.
@@aaronhowser1you can adjust that with mods/config files. But 500km is a bit much :). It shouldn't btw. But distances and speeds in space games are almost always completely idiotic anyway. Except KSP.... Orbits are measured in kilometers per second. If you fly with a few 100m/s you'd just drop straight down. But if dedicated space sim and real size space Elite Dangerous is nonsense in that regard, Starfield has any right to be also.
Gopher, when you start diving into shipbuilding-which admittedly is the biggest credit sink in the game-you'll find that space combat becomes a lot more fun. Shipbuilding and design might very well be my single favorite thing about Starfield.
Me, yelling at the screen like it's sports: CLICK IT. CLICK THE DEBRIS. TBF I'm using a controller but it's as simple as just hitting the main button so I'd assume the left mouse button. You can do it as soon as you're within 500m of it. I sort of rarely feel mouse and keyboard is the best way to play something anyway but these space battles are clearly made for controller. Yes, possibly a design flaw.
Love your streams enough to join. Your Fallout 4 streams for gameplay and modding were invaluable. For Health, Emergency pack and Trauma Packs are good substitutes if you run out of Med Packs.
Yep, ship parts are expensive. Paying the 1k credits for repairs at a city is a DEAL. Especially since the 1k will fix your ship even if down to 1% while the parts will cost 12k to do the same. Save those parts for use in combat. I used 36 in one tough battle. You have to be inside 500 meters but outside 50 meters to collect space loot. Don't fly right up on it.
New Player Ship Combat Tips: * First of all, join the Vanguard. You’ll unlock two of the best ship weapons in the game after the first mission. * Get at least rank 1 of Targeting Control Systems perk. It’s basically VATS for ship combat and is a literal game changer. Once you lock on to an enemy, activate targeting and you’ll be able to target subsystems once their shield is down. Further ranks of this perk are highly recommended for boosting your damage. * The other game changer perk is Engine Systems (Rank 4). You can boost towards enemies without being fired upon and enter targeting mode so you can pound them as they pass by. * Boost for 1-2 seconds to avoid missiles the moment you see the red warning and use the thrusters (from Piloting perk) to cancel the boost so it’s not wasted. * The thrusters are basically a handbrake and can be used to cut the engines and turn faster. You maintain your speed in the direction you were going, so you can strife at high speeds or even turn around and fire while still moving away from enemies. Follow with the booster to quickly accelerate in your new direction. * If you can knock out a ship’s engines in targeting mode, you can board them and take their stuff. This is also a combat technique because your shields will restore while docked and no other ships will attack you. You can also use repair parts in the ship menu and they’ll do their work while not in the menu. So if you’re having trouble against multiple ships, board and clear them out one at a time and you’ll be renewed to continue the fight. A boarded ship that has lost its crew will be dead in space once you undock, but you can still destroy it after the fight for the XP and possible repair parts. If you leave any crew alive, they’ll rejoin the fight. * Power allocated to engines determines your max speed. You’ll want this to be as high as you can afford so you can move around the battle field quicker. Line of sight matters, so the faster you can position yourself to flank enemy ships, the better. * Power allocated to weapons only affects their recharge speed, not their damage-per-shot. * Ship weapons have a fire type: auto or repeater. Repeater weapons (like the starter ballistic weapon on the Frontier) need to recharge between every shot, so their fire rate and DPS is directly tied to their power allocation, and therefore you’ll want to max their power if possible. * Auto weapons (like the starting laser on the Frontier) have high fire rate but do not recharge between every shot because they have a magazine instead. It only needs to recharged once you deplete the magazine, and will also recharge when you stop shooting. You can allocate 1 power to an auto weapon and still do full dps with a full magazine. It’ll just recharge very slowly once depleted. This applies to missiles, too. * Repeaters can be fired freely because of how they recharge, but auto should only be fired when you’ll actually hit so you don’t waste the magazine. * Ships can’t be targeted while they’re boosting, and you’re highly likely to miss, so it’s best not to fire auto weapons at boosting ships. Good luck!
I think you're way outside of the effective range with that lawgiver There is massive damage drop off when the target is 25-50% beyond the weapons range. And that's before armour cuts in. So no wonder you could barely touch the turret. Better to use the hunting rifle.
Every RPG advertises that your background will have a major impact on the story but it’s almost always complete bluster when there is voiced dialogue. I have learned not to expect it in most cases.
When you have to destroy ships between multiple planets or moons, you can always go back into spaceport after the first battle and have your ship repaired and buy more ship parts to start fresh in the next battle.
I attempted to fly 3rd person and simply couldn't do it effectively. It may be tied to the reason I do better in 1st player games overall and my depth judgement is always off in 3rd, initially.
From the loot perspective, it is better to destroy enemy ships and loot the debris or disable them, board and loot everything inside? Do you get the same stuff or different stuff, e.g. ship components/resources vs weapons/ammo/consumables?
You get more loot/xp by boarding. Make sure to check the captain’s locker on the bridge and look for contraband as I’ve gotten up to 4-5 pieces on one ship. Once you’ve cleared it out get back in your ship and detach and blow the ship up for more Xp and a chance for ship parts. Also you can only board the last ship alive in a group so don’t even try until you’ve taken the others out.
@@nazgu1 since the ships repair so fast it’s not possible. You can definitely try but I recall trying it once and it would not show the “board” prompt.
So painful to watch >< lol; just hit " E " once and you select the item -- some how you are hitting it multiple times [or hitting something else as I can not remember the buttons right off hand].
Yeah that was unfortunate. Especially seeing as apparently that's why I was having a hard time looting and targetting. That was fixed in a patch, so I can tell you it stops being a problem later on .... until I start using joystick and the problem reared it's head once more :)
He does, yes. He actually upgrades his ships reasonably often as and when he can afford it, but the options start out quite limited. More become available later.
@@GophersVids cool, I figured it was something like that. A better reactor would help a lot. Also what pieces you can get are not just tied to skills but to your actual character level as well...or at least that's what I've been told by other yters.
You might do better in combat if you focused on just 2-3 weapons with the most ammo then cycle through your others as the ammo runs out rather than cycling through weapons every couple of minutes. You get into trouble because you cycle rather than reload.
Well the first 35 episodes or so were from before the game even released, so some time shortly after that. But I didn't start using the joystick until a little later, so space combat was still painful for a while longer.
I love it when you forget to use your words! Best episode so far! In fact, I vote for full raspberry fart sounds exclusively in all space combat from now on as it not only accurately sums up the experience, but its also the best part of ship combat. Win-win! Squishy, horrible, and mushy flight controls after taking a perk...not unlike British peas, are equally revolting and ruinous to a good time. I salute your valiant struggles and maximum effort playstyle, it does so much to make this tragically annoying game fun to watch. PS Sarah is a worse companion than Deacon which is a pretty high bar of crappiness for her to hurdle over while blindly charging into combat without you.
weird thing I found out. on the throttle bar there is a little white highlighted area on the bar. that is where you have the maximum rotation on all axis. full throttle and little throttle you rotate on all axis slower.
I didn't know this, but I actually found it refreshing to have to buy some things like ammo and med packs rather than being entirely self-sufficient like in most BGS games. Gave me more reasons to visit cities and engage with the world in more natural ways. Nice tip though for convenience! :D
I'm pretty sure that's not a thing in Starfield. I know it was a thing in Fallout 4, but I tried that very early on in Starfield and I didn't notice any additional ammo from picking up weapons.
I have a feeling he started recording this series with his review copy. He is probably far ahead and already fixed the issue ✌️ I would have advised him to learn which enemies are legendary.
Good God, do your shields EVER regenerate? That particular system needs a hell of an upgrade, in addition to making your ship more maneuverable. Better/more Engines i guess? I guess the Trick is kill the HIGH LVL ship first? Cus the others don't SEEM that tough. Their HAS to be a way to craft ship parts, surely. Edit: Keep your speed in the WHITE zone, it gives you maximum mauverability.
During dialogue the focus on npcs seems so old. Its almost like Obilvion than anything later. This is not a next gen game, dispite what Todd Howard says.
I really didn't like Lt Torres, he just seems like such a massive greenhorn, too scared of his own damn shadow to be an effective leader, no way he made officer through actual competency. His voice bothers me too, he speaks just like most of the Hogwarts legacy characters with that whispery soft tone that just grates my ears. Despite Lt Crybaby being my first impression of actual Freestar characters I still ended up joining them over the UC, even though I was disappointed at how the "great" Akila city has mud roads in half of it
If you look on the Throttle Control there is a White Area in the middle of the Throttle. This is the Optimal Thrust for Turning/Maneuvering! Keep your Throttle within that White Area during a Fight, and use Thrusters to give you extra Turning, and Boost to get out of the Line of Fire of enemies. All of this combined together will allow you to be a lot more nimble in a fight. Do Not Go Max Thrust! Basically set your Throttle in the middle, and forget it. Use your Thrusters to help flip around faster. Boost only when the enemy is coming in from the sides. If they get behind you then use your Thrusters to turn away as Boosting will only hinder your maneuverability. It takes a little getting use to, but take your fingers off of WASD unless you are using your Thrusters so you won't be tempted to increase the Throttle.
Watching you fly makes me dizzy! I hope you manage to sort out the way the mouse directs the ship, and I also hope (for the love of God), you look up key bindings and figure out how to use thrusters (you even used them at some point just after the fight)!! Great playthrough tho!
Best thing to do for your ship is to get maneuverability to 100%. You do that by adding engine power. Either upgrade what you have or add more. I upgraded my Frontier to 150 Speed, 100 maneuverability, and added more cargo. Did the same with Star Eagle when I got it. Then upgraded weapons systems. More points in piloting helps as well.
ship combat in first person perspective is so much better in this game, imo. When fighting like Gopher does here, outside perspective, I too have a hard time to keep the ship steady enough to aim.. Also use ship thrusters in combat = gamechanger
Not sure if you figured it out but in ship combat you can hold spacebar to engage the ship s thruster which will allow you to basically stop and perform a super quick turn. Much better than boosting around chasing the enemy.
My god you weren't kidding about the space combat! It's abysmal hopefully the future Starfield DLCs will fix alot of this games little issues. Remember horse combat came like a year or so after Skyrim's release.
It's actually totally fine and even pretty fun. In this episode, and during his review, Gopher hadn't discovered how to actually use thrusters yet. Don't expect him to discover until like episode 30+. Go watch his video about discovering it. Called Thrust is a Must I think. He clearly changes his mind when he figured that out.
Space combat is abysmal until you figure it out. Look at the skill tree and it’s all very apparent. Ships needing to be upgraded is also a thing, the Frontier will only take you so far as it starts out 😂. I find it to be a lot of fun after getting the basics sorted out.
Really loving the series, Gopher! (also if people can't deal with you not playing "perfectly" or whatever they should just stop watching instead of bitching about it every damn video.)
When you were looting the wreckage in space, it was very difficult to watch. I have no idea what you're doing. Something is completely wrong. The only thing I can think of is... WTF are you doing Gopher?! Is it really that hard to click E? Or is this another weird thing and you're using some devices that aren't supported by the game? Or did I miss something? If I want to loot a destroyed ship like this, I click on it with E and from 500 m I can loot it. I've never had a problem like this once. Oh and btw. OFC Vasco needs Ammo too ... Not sure why he is a Melee Fighter in your Game.
*" Is it really that hard to click E?"* - No, you just move a finger and press it. *"Or did I miss something?"* - Yes. There was a bug in one of the early builds that made targeting a little hit and miss. Especially if you had the scanner on according to some reports. It does get better later as it was patched out either before game release, or shortly after. There is still an issue with targeting with E if you also use a controller at the same time. That only became an issue once mods came out though, as it's not possible in the vanilla game.
@@GophersVidsOk, thanks for the clarification. To be honest, I was (almost) sure that you knew how to click E. In my defense, I still have to say that for some outsiders it was strange to watch if you didn't know why it was happening.
I'm unclear why Gopher has such a hard time in Space combat. Maybe it's the very hard difficulty but still I use M&KB and nowhere near the difficulty he does and I'm of similar age. I have played a lot other space games tho like Elite Dangerous and Everspace 2.
As I keep saying, it's probably due to invert Y. From what I can see people who invert Y are over represented in the "I hate space combat in Starfield" camp. People who love/like the combat seem to be over represented by the non invert Y people. Makes sense too. This game does not approach flight like a flight sim kind of game, but rather a click and point adventure if what people are telling me to do is true. And to non-invert y people I can see why that works OK. As an invert Y person it's all kinds of messed up :)
@@GophersVids Ok that makes sense. I just left it on whatever the default is. It did take some getting use to but I feel like I'm ok at it now. Granted I play on normal. I hate spongy enemies are they are bad enough in normal.
Seeing Gopher struggle with space combat makes me glad I opted to use a controller for space and K&M for ground from the start. That does not look like fun. 🤢
For the love of God, please stop flying in that horrible third person view. You'll be SO more effective in combat, not to mention it makes it a lot easier to see where you're going so you can weave in/around the asteroids and use them to block incoming fire. lol Please Gopher! lol
*"For the love of God, please stop flying in that horrible third person view."* - I tried, but it's horrible. I'd have to drop the difficulty a lot to be able to survive a single fight. It's hard to see anything in first person because the 'free look' function is just kind of clumsy. All the problems I had with the space fflight at this stage were amplified massively. First person is more 'immersive', but it's like riding a horse in RDR2 or a car in Cypberpunk 2077: Painfully unpleasant :)

Once you’ve cleared it out get back in your ship and detach and blow the ship up for more Xp and a chance for ship parts. Also you can only board the last ship alive in a group so don’t even try until you’ve taken the others out.
@@mikeb1978 What if you disable all ships in a group without destroying them? Can you still only board one of them?
@@nazgu1 since the ships repair so fast it’s not possible. You can definitely try but I recall trying it once and it would not show the “board” prompt.
@@nazgu1There can only be one ship left to board as any others are busy repairing themselves.
How does he manage to go into scanner mode every time he selects anything? >< lol
Does he ever think to just upgrade the ships shields and reactor or is that not an option?
He does, yes. He actually upgrades his ships reasonably often as and when he can afford it, but the options start out quite limited. More become available later.
@@GophersVids cool, I figured it was something like that. A better reactor would help a lot. Also what pieces you can get are not just tied to skills but to your actual character level as well...or at least that's what I've been told by other yters.
It's so weird not seeing Gopher loot everything not nailed down.
"Pirate sniper space helmet" Wait a second!...there's snipers in a Bethesda game?
WHAT?! No why, don't they all got Stormtrooper aim?
I wish we could tag the enemies.
You might do better in combat if you focused on just 2-3 weapons with the most ammo then cycle through your others as the ammo runs out rather than cycling through weapons every couple of minutes. You get into trouble because you cycle rather than reload.
Gopher what episode do? you figure out how ro use thrusters
Well the first 35 episodes or so were from before the game even released, so some time shortly after that. But I didn't start using the joystick until a little later, so space combat was still painful for a while longer.
@@GophersVids keep up the good work. Even your struggles are funny.
Boosting into somebody's line of fire doesn't strike me as a good idea.
In all fairness, the Frontier is a dog.
I wish Captain Myeong could be a companion. I like her better than the Constellation members
You say it like it wasn't covered in the tutorial the first time you fly your ship...
Gopher, your ammo issues can be mostly mitigated by picking up all weapons, even if you just drop them immediately you get all the ammo from them.
@@killean2645pretty sure it works here as well on my second character and killing all those pirates with grendals has given me 2000+ rounds on 7.77
I have a feeling he started recording this series with his review copy. He is probably far ahead and already fixed the issue ✌️
I would have advised him to learn which enemies are legendary.
When I tested it it definitely did not work for me. Checked how much ammo I had, picked up weapon, still same amount of ammo.
Why are you boosting into a turn screaming NOOO. You are the one doing it.
During dialogue the focus on npcs seems so old. Its almost like Obilvion than anything later. This is not a next gen game, dispite what Todd Howard says.
Gopher, I have a question: Did you shape your Starfield caracter as a resemblance of yourself in real life? Just curious. 😊
Look up Billy in the back of the bus for Dexters Labatory. Gopher is a blonde version of him. 🙃
I just switched to Joystick. Much better :)
Yayyyy, great hear! Ship combat is really good once you get the hang of it.@@GophersVids
I was HORRIBLE at ship combat until I beefed up my ship a bit.
ship combat in first person perspective is so much better in this game, imo.
Yeah I definitely think that this recording happened before the video he posted about discovering his thrusters
(also if people can't deal with you not playing "perfectly" or whatever they should just stop watching instead of bitching about it every damn video.)
your speed is always at maximum, it should be half way in the sweet spot so you can do better faster turns
i found that most often it is not worth it to increase speed, try to match theirs and stick behind works best.
lol i just watched pt 2 refresh the sub box and there is part 3.
aaand there go another 40 minutes
I love when that happens 😅
Groaning when he doesn't take Targeting Systems with his skill point. It's THE game changer for space battles.
Given its litteraly VATS in space. Yes i would agree from what iv seen.
I took it later, and it's useful for disabling ships, but it would not have helped here. In fact I'd probably have died quicker :)
Switching to Joystick REALLY helped me a lot :)
