We can thank Rob for this performance. He pushed hard for them to play this live.

We need him to fully convince them to play Eye Of The Beholder live
Thanks Rob. Every note was perfect!
This song needs to be played more live
Yes
The song is pretty sad though, not only its an instrumental its also a tribute to Cliff, i doubt they will play it anytime soon.
Trospher wasnt it cliff’s last song that he wrote? It’s definitely one of the best songs on ajfa imo
It really should, but I think it would ruin the song so that it would no longer be so special if they played To Live Is To Die more often. But I would love to see them perform it better.
This is the only time it has been played full . In Live Shit , Jason played the demo before Master Of Puppets, which became the video Cliff Burtons Last Song.
Between Orion and Ktulu, this song often gets overlooked yet it’s an equal masterpiece to me.
To Live is To Die > Orion > Ktulu. (my opinion)
@@lincebizantino1177 to live is to die > orion = suicide and redemption > ktulu
Don't forget suicide and redemption. I think all metallica instrumentals are masterpiece!
PanosSev. I’m not normally a huge fan of instrumentals but I think Metallica’s are amazing, surprisingly better than a lot of prog bands’ standalone instrumentals (not in a concept album).
Lowe 2005 So true! Those songs create lot of emotions and different feelings each time I hear any of them. Great, great guitar riffs. When they solo together the whole thing goes to another dimension I believe..If hardwired had an instrumental song, I think the whole album would be much more powerfull and mature
1:55 fans are excited and hyped to see this song performed live, Metallica are uncomfortable playing it. This song brings back sad memories, it's emotionally difficult for them to play it. Thank you Metallica for playing this masterpiece live for us, we appreciate it.
I feel the same as you. Great to hear it, but it really wasn't in sync.
I don't think the song makes them sad, by that logic they would never play Orion and they play that one frequently. I think they just don't like it that much, like most stuff from justice, they find it hard to play live.
Moondawg good point. Idk why they don't like so much from Justice, it's a beautiful album.
@@moondawwg I think the difference here between Orion and To live is to die, is Orion is Cliff's song vs TLITD is their tribute to Cliff. As in Cliff was alive to record and play Orion live meanwhile TLITD holds a special place among their songs in which they might not want to tarnish by giving frequent appearances.
@@phelony_ Cliff even wrote those middle part riffs in the song btw in TLITD
Love the way the crowd pops when they realize what song is being played. There is no Metallica fan in the world who wouldn't love this piece to be a mainstay of the set-list; it is genuinely among the most incredibly glorious pieces of music ever written.
There is also no Metallica fan in the world who does not understand, and appreciate deeply, why it's never played live, except for the milestone 30th anniversary concert.
Some things are just sacred, and should always be treated as such.
(Maybe it'll make an appearance again at the 40th anniversary concert. And then the 50th.)
I really hope for the 50th anniversary they play all their discography. There are songs like escape that have been played only once, suicide and redemption 2, and also songs that were never played (unfortunately or fortunately in some cases!)
@@tritotrofo I think they would play every song, except Escape. James really regrets writing that one, apparently. But yeah, the entire discography show would end up being a 10-11 nights long, at least.
@@doctorwoohoo1152 I know it’s a big project, but they’re fucking Metallica
@@tritotrofo I would totally sit through it. I tried making a greatest hits playlist once. It turned out, like, 5 CDs long 😆.
They need to play Dyers Eve aswell. Banger. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

Cobain 92 That was awful
Yeah finally
Finally indeed! The new mix is even better!!! Nice one Greg!!!
Truer words never spoken

So they’ve just been sitting on pro-shots of this performance for 7 years? Wow!
Swiftshooter88 it’s been leaked before. I remember seeing it a year or two ago somewhere. It’s just really rare
A lot of stuff has been available in the members only video section if their website which has been free for three years now, it’s a really good archive.
Hey jackass, what have you done on RUclips lately?
Swiftshooter88 my thoughts exactly))
I personally can't believe it's been 7 years already
Gotta admit, I teared up at 5:20 when James came over to Kirk. Can't imagine how hard it must be for all three of the survivors to play this song.
So did I! So fucking sad!
I didn't tear up
I cried so sad
I dont think its so hard after so many years, surely not pleasant tho.
oh yea
Lol
I want this song played at my funeral. It always brings me to tears.
I have said that since 89 , and nothing has changed!
What's better then this to send you off , to live is to die indeed.
Me too! My wife has already promised!
Oh, this song is definitely playing at my funeral!

Orion and to live is to die are two of my absolute favorites, just masterpieces, they feel like they tell a story without ever saying a word

this song is heart heavy, i played this at my brother’’s funeral, Hell yes to Metallica!!! Miss my brother so much
May he rest in peace 🙏🙏🙏🙏

😥❤️
R.i.p. your brother. Yes, impossible he doesnt.
He shall rest easy, but still strong after you played this song.
The middle bit is the saddest and most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard in my 38 years. Really captures their feelings on cliff dying
🖤🖤
So true. So much emotion in this song.
This song needs to be played live at least one more time, and to be honest, Id love them to play it with no improv, just like the album version.
I think Kirk could pull it off but we would certainly have to get rid of Lars
Still Available what?! this song is very much doable for Lars. on drums this masterpiece is not that hard to play actually.
pretty certain he would play it better now than he did in there after he really had to practice for spit out the bone 🤣🤣
@@Lukas-kh5gu brother... if you watch any performance after the Justice tour you will begin to see the decline of Lars drumming ability... not so much as ability in general but his ability to play Live what's on the album, he improvises way too much because it's way more simple to play whatever you want and improvise than it is to learn the actual song. If you look at the production style from Bob Rock till now Lars doesn't actually write a drum section, he'll play about 20 to 30 various drum tracks to the same song, cut all the best parts out of all of them paste them together and that's what makes the song. He never actually writes or learns the drum track anymore, constant improvisation literally means you can't play your own shit. No disrespect I've been on the kit myself or sometimes and Lars is still a better drummer but that being said he cannot repeat what's on the album anymore and has not been able to since the Black Album... you said it yourself that you would like to see this played with no Improv. But improvisation is literally Lars Style... it's almost like hitting the like button for your own comment
@@highspeedenthusiast6628 yea true not as good as in the 80s and early 90s but on the worldwired tour he has practised and is now better than especially in the early 2000s
1.I said I want this live with no improv, not Lukas T.
2.I realise Lars likes to experiement with drum fills and I am OK with it, just improvs like Kirk's solos in this video and Lars playing something that is not suited for spesific parts, dont get me wrong people who wants metallica (especially kirk) to stop improvisation at some songs or solos, I always tell them "where is the fun in that?" for example every improv Kirk makes in fade to black LIVE has a touch of his personal feel to the crowd and day and songs like this which are very VERY melodic, in my opinion should 100% get some improv in some parts of the song, and I appriciate it no matter how it sounds to me. I just want this song, live for at least one more time, just like the studio version because in my opinion, this masterpiece deserves to be played live just as the original composers did in their album, as a tribute to Cliff.
A criminally underrated masterpiece and my personal favourite of all their instrumental tracks.
As for me “To Live is To Die” is one of the most underestimated songs of Metallica.
In my opinion “And Justice for all” is the best album of Metallica of all times, “Blackenned” and “To Live is To Die” are the best in this album.
I argue it's the greatest metal album of all time!
Totally agree buddy!
Totally, its a special album. The production wasnt as good as in the rest of the albums and the drums are off-tempo in some songs in the studio recordings, but the songs are very special
I like how one is literally the song that made them popular but is rarely called the best song in the album.. so good
To Live is To Die is one of my favorites from Metallica that's for sure \m/
this song brings back hardcore memories of me and my best friend, as young teenagers, playing duel guitars.. learning it from start to finish. He's passed on now, but those memories remain. And fuck are they good ones. Thank you Metallica.
I feel ya man ... me and and an old friend of mine used to so the same thing, damn good music to learn from for sure 🤘🤘🤘
I am almost 15 and lost my only primary school friend to suicide because he was being bullied to a major degree. It is always these songs where you can connect and feel them, even when they’re gone.
@@cuddles6149 im sorry little man, the dude i was reffering too also attempted suicide, he suffered from a metal disorder, schizophrenia. He survived, but eventually passed on due to his medications.
Its hard, I know. Your probably going through. Confusion, sadness.. anger.. its rough. You can't torment yourself with questions of "why", or guilt if any.. just realize your time with your friend. And how special it was to have him in your life.
And live your own by living a good life in his honor.
@twiztedreverb I know how to deal with it, it’s just that some days are worse. The days that are worst is when I see my primary school bullies and they bring him up. But It was because of him that I learned the power of friendship and kindness, and it is these emotions and powers that I try and spread to everyone, from my friends to my teachers to strangers on the street. Because of him and his death, I have found my reason to live.
But the memory remains! I'm sorry I had to, I'm sorry for your loss brother
James looks so sad in the middle section (4:00). Reflecting back on Cliff's death. A day doesn't go by where I don't wish that Cliff was still with us.
I just got full body chills
Great friend. He never forget.
you didnt even know him
Pretty sure he was just trying to hear himself when switching to that clean passage.........He is mostly deaf in one ear.......and the good ear isn't so great either.
Nah just trying to remember the tune and hesr himself, doubt whether he thinks bout anything else
4:00 No moment in music has so beautifully evoked the absence of a friend without a single word. Now the world is gone I'm just one.
I was 17 when the album came out and I used to listen to that part over and over and over again.
I know this song might be difficult for them to play given the circumstances. But this song with the production of the M72 Tour would be incredible
The riff at 4:00 is the best thing they EVER wrote; for me. It’s absolute beauty
Was that section written by Cliff?

If Metallica is still performing in 2026, I would like to see them play the whole thing live as an homage to the 40th "anniversary" of cliffs death
They would be 63 so idk
@@nico.ch029 Ozzy is way older than that and is still touring. He was touring when he was 63, if he can do it why can't they?
@@jonathanmarkos5526 because singing is much different than playing metal on the drums, which Lars can't even really do here in 2011, imagine how bad he will be then . Also have you seen Ozzy live in the last 10 years? It's not great, they keep tuning lower and lower to compensate

Fuck me homeless, Lars SLAYED at 6:25 (and all throughout). Got me really emotional. Lars doesn't usually get that engaged... the passion for this moment and song was written all over his forehead. Actually, same goes for all of them here. Amazing.
He messed up the rest though. A lot of fills weren't done.
He also kept speeding up during the whole performance which is so annoying, he's lost all sense of groove, he seems to not get the importance of the slow head bobbing rhythms.@@joaocritico

Same here. All of the Pro-Shots from the anniversary show with the new mix, all on Blu-Ray. I would totally buy it!!!
Was wondering if they were gonna do it with this performance of the song considering they beefed up that dyers eve video. So cool. Glad they did it. Would’ve been boring with the old live Metallica mix. This makes it sound so much better. And yes. A full release of these shows would be awesome
From what I remember, they did film all the shows, with the intention of doing something with it. But we have to be honest, the amount of editing and overdubs would be crazy, they weren't exactly flawless performances.
We all want that! C'mon Metallica release it already!
That would be awesome , and I would buy it instantly too
I still get chills every time James and Kirk do twin guitar harmonies. Timeless moments ever since I was a kid.
This audience has no idea how lucky they were.
Deserved a S&M2 version. Play it more often.
I used to think that as well, but you gotta understand, this isn't just a normal song. It has a special meaning amd they want to keep it special.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure that was an apology look on Kirk's face for hitting the wrong notes on the harmony a second before.
Just beautiful. You watch closely how while Rob pushed hard for them to play this song he very deliberately gives Kirk & James space to allow the emotion to be present & let big bad Metallica be vulnerable & miss their brother. There is no doubt in my mind that Cliff is looking down on them & he’s so fucking proud.

That moment at 5:28, for a very brief split second, you can see a look of sorrow on Kirk's face. Even to this day, playing this song still hurts them.
Cannot the kingdom of salvation take me home-unfortunately for us, cliff, the kingdom of salvation DID take you home, and far too soon. As a 31 year old fan of metallica since I was 10 years old in the summer of 2000, my life was forever changed by metallica. So many great memories with metallica as my life soundtrack. But this song, when I was younger I never really fully understood it. But now, as I am older I can appreciate it for the raw emotion it stirs up. Whenever I think of instrumental music, I think of this. Thank you Metallica for everything. And Cliff, may you rest in peace and I hope you're teaching god how to shred on the bass my friend.
Kirk, I at least feel like, was the most affected when Cliff died emotionally. The survivors' guilt he faced and probably still faces when talking about the accident.
Gonna be honest here, I love Kirk, but that look of sorrow was cause he f'ked up the harmony with James. But who cares, it still sounds great and it was there first time playing it.

Josh Spring right? The tempo of the song is all over the place and it really sounds like he’s going to lose it at any moment.
The best written instrumental is Orion. The one that best showcases their musicianship, and the most epic, The Call Of Ktulu. The best in terms of dynamism and participation in the writing process, Suicide and Redemption.
And this, this one right here, is the rawest, most glorious one!!!! To live is to die indeed lml
Long live Metallica goddamnit. That bridge still gets me every time....
It's Absolutely Beautiful 😭.
You’re forgetting the precursor, pulling teeth😎😎
This one is for sheer headbanging and badassery
@Ted Wilson i don’t know about THAT. But it IS their best written instrumental by far. Orion is DEFINITELY in their top 10 songs, but number 1? I mean I guess it’s all preference and it’s, in the eye of the beholder *elbow nudge* *wink* hah get it. But it’s pretty damn hard to put an instrumental above Master of Puppets. So I can understand you putting it at #2, so long as it’s behind Master of Puppets lol. Personally I think my top 5 goes Master of Puppets, Blackened, One, Fade To Black, then I’m kinda between Orion and Creeping Death. Could probably put either one in there for me on any given day lol. No you know what, if I had to pick a song I’d put on and listen to to jam some Metallica, it’s gonna be Orion before Creeping Death I think. So I’ll go Orion at number 5. Of course, I think I’d have to say my 5-10 constantly changes around, but my 1-4 are pretty solid in their spots. Although tbh sometimes I like Blackened over MOP. So 1 and 2 might alternate for me every so often as well.
Fuck it, it’s too hard to create a definite top 5 or top 10 Metallica songs because they have SO many good ones that sometimes you’re just in a mood where one song is really fucking with you and it changes everything up
I know they're playing the shit out of this and honouring Cliff all these years later. You can see it in their expressions and intesity of playing, but every now and then you see an expression of solemn loss and pain. But damn did they ever give it their all. All these years later, finally live. Rock on, live on, and leave some good memories.
I wonder if they ever get goosebumps from their own music
Being a musician who has written a song about a loved one who passed, yes.
Of course. That’s what it’s all about…
Look at the end of Kirk and James harmonizing I thought Kirk was mad at himself but I realized he was just in disbelief that him and his brother wrote this over 30 years for their closest friend and mentor who they get remember together and play music for in his name, you can tell they feel the chills and energy any time they perform Ktulu, Orion, or This. I have never seen James spirit bloom the way it does when hes playing that clean bridge here. Best band on the planet.

It’s been 13 years 😢 they need to play this live again. I guess we are lucky on 72 tour they played Orion every show one of the days, which before was a rare occurrence. Though this song is a master piece we need to hear it live more.
Wow best Version Ever,Masterpiece Viva Metallica To Live Is To Die🤘
Gd'am! This was the tightest I've ever heard them play this song live! I know they were high fivin' each other backstage on how in sync they were. HEAVY!!
yo LARS actually killing it here lmao
He sounds sloppy af
Metallica kills it all the time man. Thumbs up, way up.
@@GeraltOfLibya i never needed a stupid metronome because i am the greatest.
@@GeraltOfLibya dont listen then. Keep your hate to yourself.
@@GeraltOfLibya you are reported for hate speech.
So awesome to here this live. Metallica best instrumental song. I live how they sped it up a little too
One of the most compelling and beautiful romantic themes ever played by a metal band. Probably the best yet.
This must be the most tense performance of Metallica I've ever seen. You can feel the hurt in every note. No wonder they never play it live.
A top-5 Metallica song! Please play this more often guys, we love it!!!
Brings me right back to 1990 when I was Paperboy as a 12 year old kid. 6am, total darkness, freezing cold weather in Canada with a heavy bag of 50 newspapers... that shit was in heavy rotation and it kept me going. ...And Justice is still to this day my favorite Metallica album and this song is a freaking masterpiece.
To this day, this is still somehow the only full live performance they've done of this song. I know why, cause it's hard emotionally. But they really need to play it at least one more time live.
It's a shame they didn't do it on S&M, it would've been awesome
Sorry I cried listening to this. I felt it!!!
4:00 James dreaming his friend Cliff to be still with them. Moments like that break my heart.
I understand why they didn't want to play that song live.
Yeah, just imagine being 23ish, on top of the world with your close friends, then no warning, violent accident kills one of you. Crazy.
This song is just so amazing. No other way to describe it.
As much as I love Kirk, James should have played his solo. James just plays with so much more emotion, and I think that was missing in that solo (not to mentioned he changed it quite a bit).
Agreed. I always liked James solos and playing so much better. Better soul and way better vibrato.
Kirk ruined a wonderful part of the song with that solo... For sure he forgot the solo or was lost in some part and made that awful imprivisation...
RIP and long live Cliff Burton (February 10, 1962 - September 27, 1986), aged 24
You will always be remembered as a legend.
This song is just so beautifully written. You can hear in the music when cliff is being mourned, when he is being celebrated for what he brought to their lives, and what emotions the band felt with his passing. Truly one of the best songs.
I can't take it anymore this is too beautiful to handle
