Shadow Review: • A Look Back at Shadow ...
Imagine making a joke character with no stats who can’t level up and still aren’t even the worst character in the game.
I can venture a guess for who you're referring to (that one optional Centaur I'm forgetting the name of is my first guess) but I'd appreciate knowing for sure who you're referring to.
I’m talking about Adam. His stats are so bad and he joins so late that Jogurt even with his no stats can be more helpful to you.
@@snider1365Oh right, the robot from close to the end of the game. Yeah that also makes sense.
@@shanegiorgio4713Arthur? The one who learns Magic?
Fun fact, for Arthur and Adam, though. In the GBA remake, they both got some Magic Resistance. While it makes Arthur actually worse investing into, Adam isn't much better (mine was basically a second Gort whose slightly better at tackling mages to compensate for his join time. It doesn't work)
@@shanegiorgio4713 Arthur actually ends up the most powerful of all the paladins, he just has the worst base stats of them
In Fire Emblem the line between "joke character" and "comic relief" can get kind of blurry, since the games tend to play comic relief characters entirely straight as fighters and give them tragic backstories. Serra's theme music immediately communicates that she is The Funny, but her skill as a cleric is never in question and she's not really the entitled brat she appears to be. There are some straight examples, though, like Mr. "Why is blud on our team 💀" Oliver, and Samuel, whose whole character is that he's a really shitty Navarre, back when the series use of archetypes was new.
Well i raise you Shannam, the character who literally has the same stats as a generic swordmaster except he has ONE POINT of extra luck.
0:44 and then the lawyer is one of the hypest characters in the game. i’m not joking.
Reminds me of the Transformation Rings from the Zelda Oracle games that can turn you into a Moblin, Octorok, Like-Like, Subrosian, or NES Link
Do you get the abilities of those transformations, or even the ability to blend in with the monster ones?
Nope, just your sprite changes. Okay… but at least you can still attack and use items, right? Nope, no items, sword, shield, anything
In the GBA version, equipping more Jogurt rings made you into a TALLER JOGURT.
I used him a lot for healing items and such, he's not useless
My favorite part in the GBA version is the growth rates being uniquely represented by flat lines. At least, for once they're accurate.
(My favorite gag of the GBA version is still giving Musashi a promotion that makes him worse in every way though.)
Arden from FE4 comes to mind. In a game full of giant maps, he's stuck as an armor. But you also need to lumber his ass across a map to get one of the best rings in the game.
He's just a silly little hampter, a goofy lil guy, a doofus, if you will.
Wait, FE 6 Sophia was not supposed to be a joke character?
I have been living a lie 😭
Not exactly a RPG, but Glass Joe immediately comes to mind. Idk how being fr*nch helps/hurts tho.
The yapping meta is unmatched
Jogurt more like GOATgurt
Wait, you had a Shining Force let's play? Awesome, something to put on the backlog.
I've LPed Shining Force 1 and 2!
@@femspaint2911 So after I started to watch the whole SF1 playthrough I realized I've already watched the whole thing around like 20 episodes in, still finished it, of course. Gotta give those views to a 3 year old series.
Torneko from Dragon Quest IV is a bit of Gag Character. He's no warrior, he's even a merchant (when you begin playing with him you have to work at a shop), and when he fights he makes mistakes, sometimes making the fight for worse and others landing a crit by accident.
If this game were on steam.... i could see jogurt as an achievement
Shining Force is on Steam for a buck.
Shannam in thracia 776. Looks like a famous swordsman but is completely incompetent and somehow accidentally teaches a girl a really broken skill.
Y'know I could share a funny image of Sigurd in shining Force in the discord. . . or i could gaslight everyone into thinking it's fake
The only thing I ever knew about Shining Force was Yogurt. Maybe I should play it.
If you played fire emblem your gonna be right as home because it's gameplay is very similar to that but there are some differences
One of my favourite Joke Characters is Faust. 10/10 game me depression
Between Faust and Robert Kyle, Guilty Gear has some of the best joke characters in any franchise
I love how you mentioned Delibird because pokemon fans are so annoying that they'll see an obvious gag and ask why hasn't Gamefreak buffed this creature yet.
Also, Shining Force is some based taste in videogaming right here.
They technically "buffed" it with Iron Bundle
@@GMOPsyche pokefans aren't capable of understanding jokes
Just look how they can't understand why dunsparce evolution is so pathetic
@@rayquazathenoodledragon9630what i usually tell pokefans is that pokemons are designee like cards in games like MTG or YGO. Only a handful are made for tournament play. Some are for expanding the lore, some are for casual players, some are for the sake of having a quirky playstyle, some are memes and some are made just ti fill the packs.
@obiwancannoli1920 They actually buffed it in gen 5, where you could now have it learn tutor moves.
Honestly the closest Fire Emblem comparison I can make to Jogurt is Meg and she’s more of a cruel joke than anything. Jogurt at least gives you a funny ring that turns people into hamsters while Meg just gives you another mouth to feed and a grind better spent on most other characters. Jogurt at least sets the record straight that he’s bad while Meg is just a Zihark fangirl that thinks she’s hot stuff
The way you deliver the word "Hampter" is amazing btw.
I believe the Jogurt Ring has one benefit in messing up the enemy AI targeting priority and putting that character at the bottom of attack priority. so a Mage or Healer will benefit: aka Shade in FE. it’s been a long time since I played around with this though, so I’m not sure how much it works (just like we all aren’t really sure how good Shade is in FE).
I wish we'd get a full remaster of these games, or at least bring 3 to the rest of the world
My favourite gag characters are level 1 titan killer builds in Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy.
I mean, 7 MOV and 4 healing items is pretty good. IIRC, healers have like 5 MOV, but it's been a while since I played Shining Force 1, and I (obviously) have never seriously used Jogurt.
As for joke characters, Kiwi in Shining Force 2 seems like the sequel counterpart, in the sense that he also has a gimmick, is adorably terrible, and is entirely missable. But his gimmick is marginally useful, and I do like joke characters that still have a purpose. But there really isn't a joke character like Jogurt in SF1 that is actually completely useless, much less have an entire gimmick mechanic dedicated to them in the form of Jogurt Rings.
But there really aren't that many examples of them in the RPG sphere. I think most RPGs tend to have, at most, joke items rather than entire joke characters. Shining Force is a special series to me in that, in addition to being my introduction to the genre, is also the only series that blends a relatively straight-faced good-vs-evil plot with a good sprinkle of light-heartedness and easy accessibility in a way that makes me come back to it from time to time. On one end, you have the Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblems of the world (two of my favorite SRPG series) with relatively serious stories about wars/political intrigue, and on the other end you have games like Disgaea (speaking of which, maybe Prinnys fall under the joke character umbrella?) that are just a bit too goofy for my liking. This series really needs to make a comeback at some point, because I would play the shit out of a Shining Force 4.
Technically Yogurt can use items so he isn't totally useless.
I know this is a joke but after i beat this game twice by playing it fast like fire emblem game. (also no grinding and reseting the map by loading a save state before battle starts)
Jogurt being a B tier unit is very accurate. (this thing also has secret advantages that could be beneficial in LTC)
I wish I had played RPG's that had available joke characters. Does the Gadabout/Jester from DQ 3 count?
Fire Emblem has that too! People call them Ests!
im gonna have to disagree there are some pretty good ests out there like zeiss in fe6 or rosado in engage (also the only wyvern without reclassing which is what charactersz are balanced around) and one of the original est iteration
Imagine if there's an obviously traitorous party member who steals the stuff you equipped them with, so as foresight, you give them a Jogurt ring, and when you fight them, they keep it on.
My favourite joke characters are the Servantverse crew from the Nasuverse. The main joke involving them is that they're somehow some of the most powerful characters despite being the goofiest.
In fact, originally the joke involving Mysterious Heroine X was that there was no way she was being sincere about the Servant Universe and not just being Artoria in a costume. However, later events decided to make it an actual place that is even weirder than MHX implied.
One notable example is Amazones CEO, because she's actually more popular than her human equivalent Penthiselea.
As for the biggest gag character in the Servantverse, I'd say that'd be Mysterious Ranmaru X, who is the strongest Ranmaru from a planet of Ranmarus that you don't even summon, she follows you through space and time.
Jogurt is so goofy and loveable... but yeah he's very much dead weight. Lol
Shining force is really underrated
I'm a simple person. I see Shining Force. I watch the video.
Hempter.
Fire emblem wishes they have an ability where you can take every single character and turn them into a weak pathetic hamster thing but they still carry the stats of how they were before they became the hamster thing.
It's Jogurt you mad man.
Shining Force content in 2024 BAYBEEEEEE
I hate yoghurt.
Even with strawberries.
I wasn't aware that Robo-Ky was a joke character, I thought GG's joke character was Zappa.
Nope it’s Chipp
Nice
I like your greed and lack of shame. Going even further, Battle Hunter is a budget PSX game crushed by its poor scaling.
Eventually, the enemies will become far more powerful than you. Without tricks.
If you want more joke characters, I got a good one that goes back into the fighting game realm! In the game The Black Heart... there is a hidden character you can unlock if you beat the game with every other character named "Gustavo". He's a sentient jelly bean... or at least he looks like one. He can punch..... and he can kick.......... poorly. Occasionally he'll also fart. The farts are what make him dangerous, and you are effectively at the whims of RNG for the entire fight on if you win or loose. ;p
