Great video as usual!! What’s the Christmas song in the video?
How many dinghies did you see on the way there and back?
Nah, carvertical got exposed for being mostly a scam.. not really an intended scam but its certainly far from a good service. Some of their reports look just utterly stupid (hard to explain what I mean since english isnt my natural language :D). They look almost like AI randomly created it...
You can't just straight pipe the Jag and drive to belgium. Were there no cops who stopped you?
In Germany 5 minutes after passing the border with this thing they would tow your car and you could walk back to the ferry
@@Kbrd-ut6km Thats not true at all.. also it isnt that loud outside the car. My E39 didnt get taken by German cops so I doubt they would take the Jag :D
I'm in the hospital for Christmas as my last round of chemotherapy did not go to plan.
Videos like this are a welcomed distraction and brighten up an otherwise dark day.
Thanks for uploading guys love the content.
Wish you all the best, Conor 🤞😘
Good luck, and keep up the fight
Never, never, never give up!

Hope you make a good recovery, that really really sucks! Auto alex always makes me laugh even when things are a bit shit and is heart warming to know even someone in your situation can appreciate the content aswell. Good luck, keep posting i will look out for you! 👍👍
been there and I am still here, all the best for the new year
As much as Taylor is daft a lot, he comes across as the sweetest nicest guy about. Really glad you've got him on board.
Couldn't agree with this more. Seems like such a nice guy.
He comes across as a lovely guy because he is also a lovely guy in person!
We all love Taylor
He's definitely got a good personality on-camera. Makes you want longer videos honestly.
He seems to be about 30 to me
My Dad's XJ had a misfire and got awful fuel economy even though it seemed to run fine. In the end it was the coil packs. If you're changing one and that solves the issue, change them all because it's likely that the others won't be far off going.
Or don't change them yet, but just put them in the boot to be ready :D
@@rkan2 nah learnt from many times… just fit them all the same time. 😂😂
Might be worth doing the O2 sensors too 🫡
@@marcbirchley2418 Yes, this is the likely reason for the consumption...will destroy thr cats too.
Didn't think about the coils, was gonna just suggest plugs and check the O2 sensor(s), but coils make heaps of sense.
Tayyllooorrrr is a bloody legend and the editing is so good.
Legend lol
How hungover did Alex sound on day 2?! 🤣 Did he have the underground beer pipe connected straight to his mouth all night? 😂
It was because he had to deal with my snoring all night 😂
I came here to ask the very same question of Alex!! Sounds proper hanging (and good on 'em)!!
This channel goes from strength to strength tbh. Best thing you did was branch out on your own.
I love this channel and I love how it feels like watching my friends do something special for the occassion.
I have a rough low point in my life right now, it is videos like this.
That give me that much needed smile and the energy to look up and think, "Maybe this world ain't that bad after all".
Thank you and merry christmas.
Merry Christmas to you my friend. Hope things look up for you soon.
As someone who had a relative that served in the RAF during WW2, I greatly appreciate Alex and Taylor taking time out of their journey to visit the museum. The brief history lesson was very nice, and I appreciate the editing that went into that part of the video. Cheers all, happy holidays.
You must be properly old
My great grandad was in the battle of Dunkirk, got a medal of bravery for his service, wish I could of met him but our family knows what he did for us all, the medal is pretty cool to say the least
You guys crossed on the ship I work on and I served you both, you joked about MPG... So.. She uses 6 Tonnes of diesel to cross 🤣
Was good to meet you. Great video :D
when you say english you mean british soliders, a majority of the people were scottish, welsh and irish, my grandfathers were at dunkirk, when 3 entire batalions from edinburgh went out ... only 12 made it back, that was a 97% loss
Northern Ireland battalions and Irish please 😂
14:00 lovely to hear you speaking German again 👍🏻 greetings from the south of Germany ❤
Merry Christmas Alex and Team! Keep up the good work! Much love from Australia ❤
Auto Alex and MCM that's a collab I'd love to see
Fun fact. Charles Lightoller Second officer on the Titanic, voluntarily took his yacht rescued 127 soldiers from during the evacuation from Dunkirk.
Happy Christmas to you and Taylor and your team. You’ve bloody smashed it this year, your content has been exactly what us petrol heads need! Keep it up!
Ps I still want you to reboot the podcast from car throttle 😂😂 you, Taylor, Gareth, Ethan and Jack with special guests as usual!
Please put a pair of valvetronic valved mufflers on this car. It’s too classy to be that loud all the time. You can shut it up and make it straight piped whenever you want
I used to work on that boat, in the Engine Room. She burns approximately 70-75 tons of heavy fuel oil (HFO) a day and when all four engines are running, produces 44,000HP @500rpm.
Did you realise that at 7:35 the bimmer in the background has a very similar number plate than the jag? The first 4 characters are the same, what are the odds? :) lovely episode by the way, as always :) merry christmas for all of you guys!
I have to say I truly love the little segments where it gets serious for a short time and you show and explain history of where you have been, it’s a really lovely touch, I hope you Alex had a merry Christmas and that everyone else involved did too and wishing all a happy new year
I would like to see how much carbon has built up inside that engine. Because when these Jags were new they did a lot more than 10mpg. Or just stick some Redex inside the fuel tank and find somewhere where you can legally do over 100mph. Burn off all that carbon out the exhaust. Then see how much of an improvement you get in terms of MPG. Early 00's Audi and VW petrol cars are also notorious for carbon build up inside the engine (so it's not just old Jags).
Yea they are supposed to get around 18-20
Alex: Nailing the throttle with that exhaust
Jimmy: 10mpg lol
Alex: Pikachu face
😂
Looking forward to more on this.
The operation Dynamo was overwhelming and emotional for every free man in this World! Congratulations for this amazing road trip. Please fix the Jag as we love her (check the MPG and the fuel circuit, we dont want to see her on fire). Greetings from Athens Greece!
Regarding locking the petrol pump trigger, the last time I remember it being possible, the price was in pounds shillings and pence! One of the things the Americans have actually got right (plus the plastic seals that stop the petrol vapours escaping)
1:43 No srucrutal damage to the chassis. When properly repaired, it is safe to crash again.
3:50 It makes perfect sence. Landing, because you are going from sea to the land.
Lorry pumps still have the autofill function, when it's not broken anyway, water bottle or tennis ball will fit in there and jam the trigger open though. ;)
The pair of you just having a laugh while doing a road trip to Belgium makes for a great video😂,but the trip to the museum and genuine respect you showed about it’s story 👏
Merry Christmas lads , thanks for all the great entertainment this year
My grandfather was in the RN on Operation Dynamo helping the troops get back to Britain. On one trip as the Germans were tightening their stranglehold around Dunkerque, my grandfather's ship was overloaded & none of the troops would get off. My grandfather & his mates got off the ship & his ship sailed back to Britain. Stranded, they found an army truck, fixed it, packed it with fuel & supplies & drove through the German lines with the Germans on their tail. They drove to Granville on the Normandy coast, took control of a fishing trawler & sailed it back to Plymouth. It was the first time my grandfather ever drove a vehicle. An interesting way to get your drivers permit!
Merry Christmas from Australia lads. Great video!
That was a real Christmas treat! Can confirm 10mpg is iffy... I've a 6l V12 XJRS That does low/mid 20s on a run, about 12mog around town. Granted it doesn't have a supercharger, but it does only have 3 gears.
Looking forward to seeing that manual box progressing! 😁👍
Please do more of these with your cars! I really enjoy road trip type videos. I'd love to see some go down into Austria/Switzerland/Spain/Italy etc. Just buy an old car and go have fun there. I think it would make for excellent content as well as great vacations! Merry Christmas you all.
Alex, the ferry’s consumption isn’t calculated in MPG but rather in GPM!!!
I would have thought it would be measured in tons. Lol
Very comfortable, very smooth, very loud .... just like Taylor 😄 love it
If a XJR got a exhaust leak pre oxygen sensors. Cracket exhaust manifold (Common issue) or leaky gaskets between manifold and downpipe it will give false reading from the oxygen sensort to the ECU causing it to run way to rich.
Also as someone else mentioned. Coil packs are a falure point.
But for a car of this age and era, with propper maintainance, those are super reliable. Had one as a daily for 5 years now.
My Granddad - already in his 30's at the time and in the Territorial Army was captured at Dunkirk. He spent the rest of the war in POW camps and came home extremely traumatised. He ended the war in Stalag Luft 3 ( much after the Great Escape had taken place ) and post war got the Bronze Star off the Americans because he was using food from the kitchens where he worked to bribe Germans to bring stuff in and got them a radio so they could keep up with the news of the Allied advance.
He also had a deactivated hand grenade on his hearth all the time I was growing up and I used to sh1t my mates up by pulling the pin and having the handle fly off.
Sgt Eddie Hill remains to this day my absolute hero
Would definitely recommend a trip like this to anyone, me and my partner did the same trip a few weeks ago to Brugge Christmas markets and it was a blast. For a cobbley old town it’s got loads of parking that’s cheap and it’s easy to navigate. Some brilliant beers too, we spent half a day stumbling around after a few in the market.
I wish my other half looked at me the way Taylor looks at Alex 😂😂😍
Are they an item?
Ha Ha! I used to own a 4litre XJ40 & when you gunned it in sport mode, the trip computer showed 4 miles to the gallon!
Mind you, petrol was only 78p per litre back then!
Great vid guys!👍👏👏👏
Still sounds like a lot. That's like more than a litre per km?? :D
Taylor sure gets around. Just watched him pissing about in a Range Rover with Matt and Yanni at Carwow ... and now here with Alex in a Jaaaag!
A video from Alex is a great Christmas present 🌲🎅❄️
Alex and taylor are hilarious together, so glad this channel happened! Keep it up guys 👍 merry christmas to everyone involved at auto alex 🎄🎁
This one needs to be a yearly watch at christams like Die Hard.
If ever the Greggs Christmas jumper suites someone…😂
Love how excited you guys get over the hold function on gas pumps. Still have it here in the states. It did bite me once(I was stupid and ran inside to use the bathroom). That was of course the one time when the pump decided not to shut itself off when it got to full which is what it is supposed to do. ALWAYS need to pay attention when pumping gas even with the hold feature. I cringe when I see people get back in their car and leave it unattended knowing first hand what can happen. Be glad you don't live in one of the two states here that wont legally let you fill your own tank. That is definitely the worst. If it's too cold out, they will flat out refuse to come fill it up.
If you can, get your hands on a "Andy bracket", adds timing and quite a bit of power, had one on my XJ, big difference.
My commute to work is within a single state in the US and takes 60 minutes. In roughly 3 hours these two went to 3 countries, I thought Europe was bigger
I'm some what amazed that Alex is old enough to remember locking fuel pumps in the UK since any self service pumps were supposed to have the locking disabled around 1969.
Taylor, one minute you’re mud plugging with Yianni and car wow, now you’re buying Christmas trees in Belgium. 😂
Merry Christmas Alex! Thanks for all the amazing content you've made for us this year!
The Operation Dynamo museum is fantastic, well worth a visit!
Alex was 100% hungover after the beer & ribs night 😂 I've always found the best thing for that is the sickening drone of a too loud exhaust on a motorway first thing the next morning! Taylor completely unaffected... The folly of youth!
Also loved the Operation Dynamo section, good work chaps 👍
Merry crimbo 🍻
You guys just work so well together that anything you make together is amazing to watch!
Merry Christmas, Alex!
Misfire at idle and high fuel consumption usually means a cracked exhaust manifold or bad lambda sensors on the AJ16 - if it idles nicely until it has warmed up and gone into closed loop it's almost guaranteed to be the answer, or a bad engine temperature sensor.
could also be something as dumb as wrong lambda orientation - it's easy to plug the wrong sensor into the wrong plug when changing them.
Well done Alex and the team… quite incredible that you’ve grown a home spun channel, and we can watch top gear style content from you! Great job 👍
Thanks guys. Just ten days ago I stayed in Bruges for a night. It’s soooo beautiful. And you guys do an amazing show. Great editing by the way.
Loved the episode, but please remember it wasn't just English soldiers from the UK that were fighting in France against the Germans.
Looks like a fun trip, as evidenced by 12:55 where, in the morning, Alex's voice is about 5 octaves deeper than normal 😅
21:42 that guy on the right looking out of the tank reminds me of jack 😂 am i the only one who sees it?
Merry Christmas for tomorrow everyone, Keep up the amazing content as always Alex, I aim to do that Christmas trip next year if I pass my driving test
Me & three mates went to Le Mans in 2008 and on the way home decided to detour to Dunkirk, avoiding the toll roads. We nipped over the border into Belgium for a pint, but the entire country had shut at 6pm, so we had to go back to la France for une biere et un Croc Monsieur.
Your videos just get better and better with every one in terms of content, production quality and general entertainment. Merry Christmas chaps, have a great one. I can't wait to see what you come up with next👍
I bloody love this jaguar honestly I'm 60 years old and I miss mine Soooooòo much and you 2 are just pissing about which I really do find funny please Santa give me this jaguar and take it off these knob heads 🤣🤣🤣thanks for the brilliant entertainment and have a fantastic Christmas and a brilliant new year 💖💖
For me alex, and this channel are amongst one of the coolest most wholesome and humane car channels out there, nothing i wish more than the uttermost success to them.
Hey there guys! Been a fan of your stuff for a while in the early days of car throttle, just wanted to say seeing you go to Museum got me a bit emotional and it really meant a fair bit to me, as my Great Uncle Arthur was a survivor or Dunkirk and one of the 300,000 rescued upon a small fishing vessel. Thank you guys for bringing a little more attention to the event and reminding those of the absolute heroes both the civilians and those serving truly were.
Merry Christmas and Happy new year to all you guys!!
You guys just keep knocking um out the park.......... love it 👌🙏👌
Merry Christmas to you all and a massive thanks 🙏🙏
The presenting, editing and filming is all better that the current Top Gear 😂
Awesome video! Alex would really not get away with being so charismatic if he had the exact same looks, behavior and jokes, if he bad a eastern european accent
I appreciate your ability to bring some somberness along with the hilarity you two get up to. It adds a hint of seriousness when it's appropriate, but doesn't detract from the entertainment you provide. I hope to get to Bruges one day, it's a fuckin' fairytale town isn't it. Thanks for everything, Merry Christmas.
Our old 89 Sov could manage 24 (16 on school run) . Lovely car but the XF can top 50mpg and road tax is £30.
We went to that museum in Dunkirk back in April, a fantastic place and it’s awesome you promoted it as it’s a must visit
Absolutely loving the content guys maybe there should be little challenge soon where you are all given a budget to buy a car and do something special with them
I drove there about 20 years ago in an Astra 2.0 16v that must be in the scrapyard in the sky by now.looks exactly the same and I couldn’t find anything to buy apart from chocolate 😊
Great video. As entertaining as ever. My father was in the BEF and escaped from Dunkirk. Now I think I should definitely go have a look around that museum. One of his abiding memories was of being dive bombed by Stukas. How lucky we all are. Merry Christmas everyone.
Always enjoying these episodes 😁, kinda reminds me of old Top Gear. And by the way, Taylor's got some really good taste in watches.
I love rewatching this. I wish I had friends like you guys.
when the AFM go bad they get shockingly shit MPG, good luck finding one, secondhand AFM go for about £1000, new you cant get, in the end i ended up going standalone maxx ecu, and compushift to do the gearbox
I dunno why, but i've always liked a car that has a single wiper, this Jag, original Panda, Citroen AX/ZX.
Anyway, great video and happy christmas to you all.
Alex, just HOW hung over were you after your night in Bruges? 😉 Luv ya all and thanks for the awesome content ❤️
I still love those cars. Timeless elegance. Yet sporty as well.
Such a sucker for Xmas markets!
Thank you for making an Xmas special and including some non car including festivities
Aw hell yeah, a manual swap! And as another commenter mentioned elsewhere, do check out the Andy's Bracket mod developed by an ex-Jaguar powertrain engineer. Merry Christmas boys, and catch you in your next video!
Taylor: lots of leg room
Alex: Yeah I need that.
Argh! I was in Bruges on the 19th and was shopping in that market. So gutted I missed you guys!!!
I’m only 36 been driving since i was 17 and I remember being able to lock the fuel filler to fill, I was telling my wife about it, she didn’t believe me and thought I was going insane because I was adamant you could do it in the Uk..
How have you guys not been approached by mainstream to produce a show anyone missing old top gear or grand tour will absolutely love vids like this
Merry Christmas from the USA we enjoy watching you guys ,still waiting on the second spray can paint video :)
At the petrol station at 7:34 ish, there’s a BMW with the reg K222 STT.. and the jags reg is also K222 XJR 👀
FYI a tesla model 3 towbar is allowed to pull 1000kg so yes you can for sure tow a medium caravan with them . mine here in norway is legal with 1000kg on the towbar atleast aslong as trolly have brakes ( 750kg without brakes )
I remember being 16 and working part time in a car dealership years ago, and this was one of my favorite cars we had in the showroom. Still want to get one. Just love jags.
For those that are of the different metric persuasion 27.16 l/100km = 1:3.68 (l:km) (Sorry, but we Dutch guys like the same system as the MPG, but just in metric)
Check the Mass air flow meter!
Just want to compliment the level of production quality. Very slick editing and cutting, feels like watching a proper little roadtrip documentary. If you manage to nail that down you can literally use anything as content.
This bloody channel got me onto Chocomel
Excellent vid guys, Taylor is a gem. I loved the museum part, very humbling experience I bet. Merry xmas all
next time come and visit my hometown Ghent. it is only 30 minutes further than Bruges even more cozy if less touristy 😉 ( but we don’t have the beer pipes 😅) love this vids with you and Taylor! Merry Christmas and a super 2023! Greetings from a Belgian fan!
I live in Belgium for 22 years and I didn't even know will you learn something everyday
I have to say Alex you guys now have a chemistry going on, that is on par with top gear. Keep up the great work
You are by far the best DUO in RUclips, this was just awesome episode!
Its worth looking at the temp sensor for the ecu, it would explain the mpg and possibly the rough idle (rich af)
Had a misfire for a long time on my '87 range rover, and it also ran rich. Thought it was overfueling to the point of fouling the plug. Turns out it was due to a fuel leak out of one of the (original) injector hoses.
Did it again about 2 months later on a roadie, but got progressively worse. Then I went to wipe the windscreen and the wipers took an absolute age to go anywhere. That one was a dead alternator!!
