Thanks for sharing. Born in Cov in the 70's and rememer it was better before. This video proves it. Left in the 90's to move down south and get the games when I can, but damn, the place feels soul-less outside of the ground.

In 1965 I was 16 and living in Coventry. It was a great place to live from around 1960 to 1970. In 1979 I emigrated to the USA, where I've been ever since. This video only scratches the surface of what Coventry had to offer. And it was only a 30-minute train ride from England's second city, Birmingham, which was also a wonderful place.
This was the Yr I was born 1965 but still recall all these pics as I went into town from Willenhall where I still live today 2024, it's so different now an not to my liking.
the post-war rebuild was really nice. i grew up in Coventry in the 70s, and remember it well from this footage. i left in 1984, never to return, and eventually moved to London, where i still live. it’s vandalism what they did to that precinct, it’s an absolute mess now.
What a lovely little City Cov was.I,m a born and bred Coventry kid,and the abomination that,s replaced it now, makes me weep.Council should be thorougly ashamed. It,s an eyesore.
I was born in stoke heath and moved to sponend in the 60's. I remember the locarno and barnabys toy shop to the right. Watching this bought it all back. Even the circular cafe in the middle and of course woolworths.
thankyou for posting this , it captures Coventry as I remember it as a child . I was born and semi raised in Coventry , my late Father got promoted with his job in 1967 , and we moved up the road to Leicester in the Autumn of the following year , as it would have meant my Father travelling between the 2 Cities daily if we had not moved . I still go back as I have close friends there . I loved the beautiful shots of Broadgate with Lady Godiva's famous statue , and peeping Tom poking his head out of the clock to peep at Lady G on her horse , fantastic , and the City Arcade with it's birdcage . stuff like this I will carry in my memory until the day I die . thankyou
I lived in Coventry, went to Coventry College of Art (now Coventry University (?) I used to meet up with a friend and had coffee at Belgrade Theatre. I moved to live in London shortly after. It did look nice now that I see on the video. I never did like Coventry, it was too modern for me and preferred old Cities then and still do. It’s amazing that someone has a video camera back then, I couldn’t afford one!
Wow ! I worked for the Cov parks department in the late 60’s, and had to cut the grass and weed around the Godiva statue in Broadgate. In 1968 I put a garden fork through my trainers ( ‘cos I saw my first mini skirted girls). Happy but painful days ....
Great Video I live in Hillman House Tower block which was on the video was built in 1962 have been here for 25 years, don’t know what happened to the Spire at the top of the block which was in the Video.
Beautiful video Ian. I was born in 1982. I vaguely remember city centre can remember bits from this video but it's very interesting seeing how coventry looked back then kind of emotional watching. Love the round cafe & flat about to be built 👍🏼 god bless you for sharing. I have subscribed ❤️
Less populated back in the day. Better times and less crimes. You could leave your doors unlocked because most people had nothing worth pinching. Left Coventry 4th November 1993, still miss the place.
There was a very old wishing well in town, always full of coins, just as all the city centre fountains were full of coins, all those wishes. It had a REAL underground walkway under the Centre when I was a kid, very A Clockwork Orange style. I still visit, but miss and sometimes weep for my old City.
@@ianm408 Hey Ian, hope you're well. This was filmed in and around Hillfields and Coventry City Centre, the actors are mainly from my old school Sidney Stringer, if you live in Cov you'll see how much has changed, hope you enjoy. 👊 Peace.
Great video. In a sense, what is surprising the most is how little the city has changed, yet it just looks so much nicer back then. Can't help but think the chavs have drove all the decent folk out of the town centre
newuk26 I think it's just very dirty now. It's sad. I haven't lived there since 1981 although I visited my parents regularly until 3 years ago. I won't be rushing back.
There have been some improvements. Greyfriars Green, Broadgate, all looking much better. However I just think people make a place. The decent people of Coventry seem to go elsewhere for their shopping etc now. Leaving town to the scruff.
Should have left the city Center alone. Concrete jungle now city of culture!! Bloody mess. All the trees 🌳 have been chopped down. Well done city council 🧐 Money to waste £££ How nice it was back then 🇬🇧🇬🇧🌳🌲
I was born 1963. Fond memories of mum taking me to Coventry on the bus when I was little and waiting for Lady Godiva's appearance when the clock struck... and sitting near the fountain. Much nicer times.
Appreciate your video thankyou very much But compared to the present time most people who were from the 50s 60s and 70s are gonna be critical of the new modern Coventry. they will see it as an utter complete mess and ruined as they've ripped up all the grass from.every where .chopped down all the trees from every where and removed comfortable wooden benches and replaced all with concrete and fountains plus unfortunately to make matters worse we've no more big.family. stores through mergers etc British home stores gone Woolworth gone co.operative gone Owen & Owen .gone these were.all great favourites Wheres all the improvements !!!
@@ianm408 That’s lovely. One of my favourite running paths was from Memorial park to the round about near Gibbet Hill, along this road. Thank you for these brilliant videos 💛
The year I was born in Hillfields... and the era of Coventry that I love the most. If it could have stayed like this and the council not continuously f**ked with it, it would have been a better place.
Hi- we are putting together a short film about the Irish in Coventry and we were wondering if we could use some of this footage? We would credit you as the original copyright holder. Kind regards Ciaran
Hi yes, lovely footage but less relevant to our project. (We are mainly looking at what the city would have been like for newly arrived peoples and the kind of jobs they did) The launch will be March next year at the Herbert, please come along! Ciaran
To be honest, I never liked Coventry and still don’t! You either like or hate a place. I was born in 1977 just outside of Coventry both my grandparents lived in Cov so we visited family here a lot growing up. All I will say is this.... the one thing I do miss is the people from yesterday years ..... today’s generation are a disappointment in Coventry.
Coventry Precinct had nothing to do with so-called "brutalism." Many aspects of modernism, and modern building techniques, yes. The Precinct was filled with artwork, colourful mosaics, neon artwork on the buildings, fountains etc. Donald Gibson's plan was forward thinking, incorporated designs for modern life and was a boon to the people of Coventry.
Todays generation isnt actually from Coventry, its "cosmopolitan". Strangely, all the new inhabitants are from the same places - the indian subcontinent and eastern europe. Immigration should be balanced - lets swap half a million asians for some canadians, australians, new zealanders, french, germans, italians, scandinavians etc etc. Of course they wouldnt want to come to the new coventry. Nope, its just pakistan, india, poland and romania - garnished by the overseas student population. I remember sixties coventry, and the coventrian people. All these years of labour council policies have destroyed the place more completely than the luftwaffe ever did.

completely agree. the city looks ugly now. it used to be such a nice place and i don't think that's unique to coventry unfortunately
It’s less of a concrete jungle now. This post war build didn’t age well at all

I was about the same age - 4 in 1965 born in Wood End but grew up mostly in Canley from 63 onwards. Left Cov in 84.

When Coventry used to be Coventry
FANTASTIC ,, IM SPEECHLESS ,, ACTUAL VIDEO OF THE BIRD CAGE
Pity he forgot to video the City Arcade. Probably too dark in there.

Post war brutalist architecture at its best.
