Imam at-Tabari is Salafi!

- Imam Ibn Jarir at-Tabari (rahimahullah) was from the earliest authorities on the explanation (tafseer) of the Quran. He died in the year 310.H, which makes his tafseer one of the earliest and most trustworthy, along with the fact that he was Salafi in aqeedah. This can be demonstrated in many ways, however I would like to mention in this small article one way in which the imam expressed the aqeedah of the Salaf which opposses the aqeedah of the Asharis. The methodology of Imam at-Tabari in his tafseer is well known, he explains the Quran with the Quran, or with the Sunnah, or by way of what the Sahabah understood or the statements of the tabi'een, along with explaining certain words by way of the pure arabic language.
The Asharis either make ta'weel (interpretation) or tafweedh (denial of the meaning) of the attributes of Allah if it is in contradiction to their rationale. They also label those who affirm the attributes upon their apparent (dhaahir) meanings (which is the way of the Salaf*), as "Mushabbihah/Mujassimah" -anthropomorphists. They also label falsely likewise anyone who affirms a supposed direction for Allah, so we ask; will they declare the scholars such as Ibn Jarir at-Tabari as such?
*(note: when we say "literal (dhaahir) meaning" we do not mean to say that these attributes resemble the attributes of creation)

Quran 13 : 2 - . Then, He rose above (Istawa) the Throne ...
Imam Tabari says Allah is High above it.
This shows He doesn't do Tafwid Ma'na or say I don't know the meaning of the word.
Quran 20 : 5. The Most Gracious (Allah) rose over (Istawa) the (Mighty) Throne.
Tabari says Allah rose and is high above it!
Again taking Isitwa as literal in the meaning!
Quran 57 : 3. He is the First (nothing is before Him) and the Last (nothing is after Him), the Most High (Dhahir - nothing is above Him) and the Most Near (nothing is nearer than Him). And He is the All-Knower of every thing.
Imam Tabari says Allah is Dhahir above (Fawqa) everything.
Allah is al Batin, Allah is closest to you, with His Attributes and mentions - Quran 50 :16 which mentions Allah's knowledge & some say its angels.
4. He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days and then rose over (Istawa) the Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty). He knows what goes into the earth and what comes forth from it, and what descends from the heaven and what ascends thereto. And He is with you (by His Knowledge) wheresoever you may be. And Allah is the All-Seer of what you do.
Imam Tabari says Allah sees you and knows your acts whereever you are.

Asharis says this is wrong and means Allah has a place and direction but still claim imam Tabari wrongly.
Quran 58 : 7. Have you not seen that Allah knows whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is on the earth? There is no Najwa (secret counsel) of three but He is their fourth (with His Knowledge, while He Himself is over the Throne, over the seventh heaven), nor of five but He is their sixth (with His Knowledge), nor of less than that or more but He is with them (with His Knowledge) wheresoever they may be. And afterwards on the Day of Resurrection He will inform them of what they did. Verily, Allah is the All-Knower of everything.
Tabari says : Abdullah ibn Ziyad, Dhahak says Allah is above (Fawqal) the Throne and His knowledge encompasses creation.
Allah Rose over the Throne and is High over it.
Quran 67 : 16. Do you feel secure that He, Who is over the heaven (Allah), will not cause the earth to sink with you, and then it should quake?
17. Or do you feel secure that He, Who is over the heaven (Allah), will not send against you a violent whirlwind? Then you shall know how (terrible) has been My Warning.
(Bayhaqi did Tawil and affirmation, he says the word Fi can also mean above.)
Tabari says : Allah is over the Heavens, while some Asharis say its the angels.
Quran 70 : 4. The angels and the Ruh [Jibril (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years.

Tabari affirms the apparent meaning.
Quran 40 : 36. And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) said: "O Haman! Build me a tower that I may arrive at the ways -
37. "The ways of the heavens, and I may look upon the Ilah (God) of Musa (Moses): But verily, I think him to be a liar." ...
Tabari says Firaun is denying Musa saying Allah is the Lord God above the Heavens who sent him.
In Sarir Sunnah Tabari says : Call upon Allah or Ar Rahman, to Him belongs the most beautiful names, He should know His Lord is the one upon the Throne He rose over, o Him belongs the Heavens and the Earth and what is beneath it, whoever goes beyond this is ruined.

The throne has a limit meaning a beginning and an end. Are you saying He is limited to that?
No the Ustadh isn’t saying this
No because He is above it and *outside* of the creation.
In surah taha you said "ertafa' wa ala" more than 5 times but you didn't continue the saying of Imam at tabari especially what Asha'ra and maturid like to point out. sorry I hate unfair claims!
