    Born and raised into a Yoruba family and very familiar, I feel ashamed of how people are desecrating traditional ancestral heritages. I can't even listen although just briefly hearing I don't think you personally are being disrespectful. As a daughter of Osun (e ma se yeye Osun) she has never made a point of shade but has always looked very black skinned when she comes through. Deeply saddened. But thank you for acknowledging the crap that people uphold.

    Alafia, El-Sun Here, I just wanted to add that in addition to the pernicious fabrications about Osun and light skin people, there is also another disturbing stigma; that Osun only caters to women and homosexual men. Such asinine nonsense. I adore Oya, Yewa, Osun, Yemoja Oba, etc, they're a divine part of the Orisa cipher. I get so tired of people with limited historical processes trying to put a dent in the infinite African historical process. Our ancestors went through a pernicious time and yet had the strength protection of the Orisas to preserve our tradition so that we can carry it on. I refuse in every sense of the word to allow anyone to weaken this strong African presence in the world! Alafia Awo Ato.

    A very good topic something that really needs to be discussed. i live in the Caribbean (not Cuba ) and recently in my homeland i heard about a split in the Orisha community between the Older generation which wanted to preserve the syncretic version of Ifa that were taught to them by their parents and elders, which was developed to hide the practice, and the younger generation which want to purge the Orisha practice of all European elements .
    There are to many people inventing ideas about what Orisha is about, i've read about people mixing elements of wicca and Orisha practices together. It's dangerous when people equate tolerance with " everything goes "

If you do not follow the rules they can have negative effects and sometimes dire consequences. Whether you're part of the lukumi branch or traditional ifa you have to follow those traditional rules and most of the time they do not involve wicca or hoodoo etc.

    As a white woman I gotta say it bothers me to see that as well. I saw a depiction another deity who was white washed the other day that rubbed me the wrong way. Maman Brigid, who may have been adopted from the Irish goddess Brigid, but she is a deity of the faith of voodoo. She should not have been depicted white the way this artist did her, and it was so gross to me. The worst part is the person is from New Orleans and should have known better.

I don't worship Catholic Saints and I'm not afraid to say it. I once needed something to venerate the Egun and didn't feel like traveling far so I went to a local Botanica and I was so disappointed. The owner asked me what was wrong and without filter I simply said "This is a Catholic Store." I apologized for the aspersion but not the content. You are so right in that people of color; especially black people without knowledge of self and kind, see Europeans as their standard of excellence and end up championing something else at the detriment of our cultural historical process. I support you in this endeavor 110%. May you be showered with blessing via Olodumare and that Esu clears all obstacles and guide and direct you in the best manner. There needs to be a conversation about the difference of ESU and Eleggua; but that's another space and time. Oh, and your name is fantastic! Alafia

  • @ScribblebytesWorldwide
    @ScribblebytesWorldwide 5 лет назад +4

    My two cents here is that we currently have a translation issue between all of us. We all believe the same thing but we call it different things even though its all basically Vodou!
    In South Africa we don't even give it a name, we just call it Traditional. If someone asks you "are you traditional?" in South Africa, it means "Do you do Vodou?". It's not a bad thing, in fact you have to register with the government if you're a witch so you can get insured if your potions go wrong. You can also take paid leave from work for "twasa" (training/initiation). Yall African Americans are wasting your time in America busy being exterminatinated. Yall need to come back home.
    Of course all these Spirits are black as black, but over time they have appeared in many different forms in order to initiate you in a particular order. Oshun is black but if she wants to initiate a white girl from Manhattan, she's gonna appear as Venus/Aphrodite for instance. She's an energy.
    Also, when white people killed our ancestors, they were tied to our bloodlines. In Southern Africa we call them "Mandawe/Mdau" spirits. So when white people took ships to come kill us, they had to make offerings to the sea gods. So they did their Slavic magic and got talismans to sail across the oceans. The sea spirits however, are all black so when the sailors finally reached us and then turned against us, the sea spirits punished the white souls of the sailors to serve the children of the victims. So in our culture, if you dream of white people or even white Oshun, then your main ancestor is a Mandawe or white people. They live in forests and water. They love technology and beauty. They never age and they can swim through life in the sea of people. They confuse people's sexuality because of how alluring they are.
    Of course this is just one group, we also have other spirit types that do different things and as I research (for a part, I'm an actor) I see that Vodou, Santeria, Kabaallah, Islam etc. is all the same. If only we could find a way to communicate it universally so that all Africans across the world connect toward a common purpose. Yes, some houses are more artistic and others more militaristic but we need them all to survive.

    I agree with you. I fully understand that spiritual being do not have skin or sexual organs, they do have attributes that are masculine or feminine. People see their orishas and or God's in their own image to be relatable. Which is natural and good. I also understand that a faith that began in Africa by African people, the original representative images are what helps you connect yourself to your roots, because they look like yourself. And to see it represented differently would be considered inappropriate or disrespectful. I personally would never represent our lady of Guadalupe represented as black, white or Asian, and I would also feel it would be inappropriate. However, I would not take it personally if a black person represented her as black. Because that's how he sees her and identifies with her. I think we need to keep in mind that it's the faith that counts, not the images. If someone is practicing seriously and honoring their orishas, I don't think the orishas care how they are being visualized. I think the orishas are content that the individual in question is honoring them and representing them well in their lifestyle and actions. Therefore I think it's wrong to be offended by other people's representations of orishas as long as they are not directly mocking them. We can't allow our personal issues and predjudices interfere with our worship, because it is wrongful and we don't have the authority to determine who the orishas pick and for what reasons . Although I completely understand why one would be offended by certain images. But we are striving to be of good character and of a higher moral standard than our currant selves and be on a spiritual plane rather than in this earthly debauchery of injustice. Although I get it, but one cannot allow oneself to drag our earthly negative experiences into our spiritual realm, that is why we cleanse ourselves, both physically and mentally before engaging our orishas.

    Osun is another diety, you are referring to Ochun or Oshun. The Yoruba belief system was preserved in Cuba and as an island nation receive visits from many who look to learn from these ancient practices. Similarly in Puerto Rico and the Bahia area of Brazil. The collares can be worn in or out and are worn inside for practical reasons by Santeros when active so as to avoid getting them caught on things. Ochun is and has always been depicted as a lighter skin deity not for any European ideas but because in Africa too people have different skin tones. As civilisation was born in Africa this belief system recognises skin tones and all the Orishas are African yet it embraces all people. The values are based on being a good mother, father, child, brother, sister etc. In some signs the person might be advised not to marry a lighter skin or darker skin person as their luck or progress in life is with the opposite etc. I have been initiated as daughter of Ochun for 22 years, an Iyalocha, with 4 godchildren - ahijados. Made in Cuba, and ever grateful everyday. Ache.

      Both or the slave who arrive in Cuba wasn't Yoruba they teach us before this Yoruba revolution now.Not all Yoruba are extremeli dark no all igbos are light.Any way Oshun is an energy and love any human no matter the color. We humans represent the orishas in a way we can feel identified. In Cuba Oshun have a cinnamon or caramel color for be specific when people want to represent her and her sister Yemaya the darker.beautiful black skin is the black mother of everybody mama Africa and we love them both

    I get what your saying but I must disagree with the fact that you called it yaruba religion..,it’s not it’s part of a culture, my culture to which I’m proud of, I grew up knowing where my ancestors came from and how they tried very hard to keep that part of their culture alive ....thank you Omo Osun

    The area that I come from which is a riverian area of Nigeria, are the water god (mami water) worshippers. River deities in many areas have always been referred to as light skinned. I don’t think the elders in my village who still revere her care about what the world thinks.
    Osun is not the only water goddess and these deities appear to people in different forms, even Osun. It may be in the form of a man, woman, snake, light skinned, dark skinned.....Stop using the Black American mindset to paint and put things in one pot, one mindset. Sitting on RUclips and reading up people’s work who want to potray what they want to potray does not cut it. Actually go to Africa and go find out what people actually believe.
