In jimmy's case, effectively cramming an entire school subject into a single day was simply too much for him. Not enough time.
In hugh's case, simply attempting a brainblast of any magnitude was too much for his simple mind.

I feel like he’s done more for sheen in season one where sheen basically had godlike intellect surpassing jimmy’s. I think he died because he had used his brain up so much through the course of his life that it finally took its toll in an incredibly horrific way

Actually no. Hugh loves Jimmy more than his ducks. Hell, he once said that without Jimmy or his wife, his life has no purpose.
I love the calming music that plays when Hugh comes in. I love that Hugh is trying to be comforting even though his son is dead. Yeah, like there's any hope to have.

I get the idea that the first thing Hugh sees is all of the ducks covered in blood, and then he only realizes that the pristine body of Jimmy is still standing in the middle; headless yet bloodless (because all of the blood rushed to the brain for the brain blast), and only after thinking about it did he realize that his son's brains went cosmic.
The most out of character moment is when Sheen says retrospect.

The fact that I can’t tell if both Sheen and Carl actually thought about it and both died

EDIT: Here's the story I wrote:
Jimmy's friends needed a soda to temporarily improve their intelligence one day, so Jimmy began one of his Brain Blasts. However, the accumulated amount of energy from these brain blasts wasn't properly released, so the energy built up enough pressure to explode Jimmy's head. Carl and Sheen are horrified by this, and immediately report it to the police. Carl and Sheen were eventually sentenced to 5 years of Juvie. Jimmy's casket was lowered just days after the arrest.

A high power impact, from the eureka explosion. ALSO they have no finger prints on anything, even if there is really anything in there to cause an explosion that large. And if they were to hold an object a mark with no blood would be left on there. Lastly is how recent, cops will appear asap, and by that time the blood should still be liquid. They would be witnesses, or the ones put in jail because of the laws of forensics

OR Jimmy's mom saw the carnage tried thinking about how it might have happened. The Brain Blast could be a Neutron thing. The biggest evidence supporting this is that Hugh's head only exploded when he uttered the phrase "Brain Blast" and not when he was thinking. Sheen and Carl knew saying Brain Blast was a bad idea, but Mrs. Neutron couldn't have because she wasn't there.

JJ actually setup a story I never knew I'd care to see, Carl and Sheen's life as fugitives, and their lives spiraling out of control because of something they didn't even do. lol
Considering the usual comedic nature of the franchise, I can see them going on the run because they think they're fugitives, and the police do in fact chase them down every time, but we find out in the series finale it's not because they're wanted fugitives, but that the police thought they'd run away and were trying to find them to bring them in safely. They thought the killings were done by some madman that the boys had encountered and they ran away in fear to save themselves.
What a twist!

Sheen knew that selling off Jimmy's stuff and starting new lives were too much of a perfect fantasy. It will never come to happen, but he didn't want to tell Carl the horrible fact that there's nothing that can be done. So as a last comforting effort, they just brain blasted together, thinking of a possible new life awaiting for them, a life that will never ever come to fruition. 4 lives irreparably changed in that home forever.

That got so real so quick, and at the end Sheen was the only one to live. You can just tell that Carl would never be able to follow through on the plan. Sheen saw this and knew what to do... in his eyes... it was the only way.

This was not what I expected, I was honestly expecting something more wholesome, like Jimmy telling Carl and Sheen that they should just study because Jimmy can't always make inventions for them to solve all their problems, And then they spend the rest of the day having fun and studying. Also Jimmy has a device I could just make them smarter so what was he the point of the brain blast.
The voices make this funnier than it should be.

My headcannon is that this was actually the result of Carl's expectations, since he's a God in ignorance now. Jimmy fibbed about the experimental creation being DMT so that Carl wouldn't abuse his powers.
