Dude funky sweatshirt. Serious question from a guy who shoots old school bows... how do you olympic style archers SEE the ten ring at 70 meters? I understand how the sights work but how do you get them ON target at that distance? Just curious as I've never shot that far before and am not sure I could see the center of the target at that distance!
If you have a ring sight you align the edge of the sight with the edge of the target then you know the sight center is in the center of the target even if you cannot see the center itself. You adjust the sight radius by moving the sight forward or back until the edges covers each other. it is like a circle in a circle. You can judge any misalignment by the circles not perfectly overlapping.
I genuinely didn't think about the "I need to hit the target" vs "I need to hit the target good", I'm blaming video games on this one. Great video and good luck retaking the holy land!
OK heres a contest. From a distance of 100 metres. Team 1 has 10 Olympic competition archers, carrying modern regulation competition bows, and arrows poisoned with a mixture of snake and spider venom. Team 2 has 10 trained war archers, carrying bows like the guy on this video, and their arrows are also poisoned with a mixture of snake and spider venom. Three two one fight. Would the modern bows be the deciding factor here, or would the fact the war archers arnt a stationary target and can actually move be the negate the advantages of the precision competition bows in this fight?
There's already one fault in the setup, and that is the assumption that "war archers" are mobile. This is not typically the case - most archers in battlefield conditions shot in static lines and only moved to reposition for better angles. The mobile kind of archery was more typical of horse archers, and tribal warriors who used very mobile skirmishers (such as native Americans). Shooting while moving, as with any handheld weapon, will make accurate shooting impossible. It's already extremely difficult to hit a stationary target at 100m in ideal conditions with the most modern precision equipment while standing still. Doing so while on the move, against a target that is also moving, is basically a matter of chance and not predictable outcomes. It's ridiculous to put opposing archers in a situation where one can move and one cannot. Even basic survival would imply that the target is going to try to evade. That aside, it's fairly lopsided in that modern sport archers do not practice anything resembling what would be used in warfare. It is individual precision shooting with impractical equipment. A group of "war" archers, by virtue of being trained for this very purpose, would probably do better in letting off disciplined volleys or shower-shooting with faster techniques. In essence, this is the equivalent of a team of snipers versus a team of automatic riflemen. Single-shot precision is not appropriate for a direct combat situation, and in these circumstances the snipers would switch to a more appropriate secondary weapon instead of trying to fight it out with their rifle. The main limitation for both sides is that to shoot accurately, you have to stand still. This is best shown in traditional Korean archery, which hits 2m targets at 140m, but there is no way they can do that without being stationary. In this case, with sights dialed in, a modern target shooter is more likely to tag a traditional archer (again, similar to how a sniper vs rifleman duel would pan out). At longer distances, historical war archers would have to rely more on indirect shooting while target shooters can single out vulnerable targets. On the other hand, if we scale up the battle size, things will swing strongly in favour of the war archers. In small numbers, I would expect the sport shooters to tag more consistently. If you have 1000 archers on either side, the precision becomes less important as volume of fire will bring down more opponents. This is, of course, the reason why you don't build an entire army of snipers.
Wouldnt hitting those tiny targets in gold at 7m still be easier than hitting the big target at 70? I mean because of wind having a lot longer to mess with the arrow and maybe other issues?
You can also get on a horse get to full speed turn around 180 degrees and still go at full speed in the opposite direction you are facing. You just performed the Parthian shot.(Well you also gotta fire in the direction your facing but wutevs)
You may have made a video about crossbows before but I'd love to see your thoughts on crossbows. Where does it fall to you? Is it archery? Is it closer to firearms? Or is it a class/category of its own? Also would love to get general opinions of historical and modern crossbows. It used to be that crossbows were an alternative to those with injuries but with today's modern compounds I think that point is moot. My old man can pull a 40lb compound and hold without difficulty. He's considered frail.
mhh sometimes youtube gets kinda creepy. i never watched something with archery and this video gets recomended one day after i started ghost of tsushima and have sometimes to deal with mongolian archers

The european style allows for bows th have a higher draw weight and the thumb draw allows for faster shooting as shown in the video. Thumb draw was montly used on horseback if im correct because as a foot soldier you benefit more from the higher attack fange.
What about old competitions, what was the goal? Is it much different to now? Did people then used more specialized sports techniques, since they didn't have to rush about hitting another target or get killed?
Hi, I have abbow, made by the same Bower as you do, 45#. However, I have found the most control/accuracy for me has been to shoot off the knuckle (the left side of the bow) we have a problem with rabbits on our land, and to be honest with you, I’m no mongol but shooting this bow to kill a varmint has been more fun than using a rifle to do the same. I count hits on target, because I will be taking it out hunting bigger prey. (No living arrow here either)
Me: "I still had a work to do and i need to send it on email @ 3:00 AM" also Me at 2:50 AM: *some random vids on youtube* "Archery | Do War Archers Drop Their Bows?"
What about hunting? Does that have more in common with modern archery or war archery? I don't really know much about archery, but I could see a case being made for either precision or control/power being the priority for hunting.
Hunting is really it's own thing. It has a clear practical purpose with an obvious success criteria (did you bring home the meat?). A hunter only needs to be accurate enough at close distance to ensure an ethical kill, and the engagement distance might be under 50m to as low as 10m. You only need to hit the kill zone of a deer (lungs, etc.) with a bow that is strong enough to penetrate, and no more than that. Hunting is perhaps the best representation of "good enough" for the purpose and no more than what is needed.
Zachary Lancon From 1964 through 1990, I also enjoyed useing a recurve for hunting pheasants on the wing. Archery for birds is a great challenge🎯 I still shoot targets with longbow and keep one recurve strung for emergency.
Why is it on a recurve you shoot from the opposite side? On a war bow its from the right being right handed? Obviously the hand position but what else is going on?
It isn't a "war bow" that I'm shooting and that's not the reason why the arrow goes on the other side. For Eastern styles of archery, the thumb draw is predominantly used. The direction of the string being turned is opposite to that of the Mediterranean finger draw, so the arrow is placed on the outside so that the finger pushes it against the bow rather than knocking it away.

Me: "I still had a work to do and i need to send it on email @ 3:00 AM"

Great hoody :) video also is cool ;)
Have a like just for the TL;DR in the description lol
I liked the video for the description XD
Why is it trending again? Random algorithm or some kind of archery event sparking interest?
8:25 Thousands of years actually
Least famous one is from indonesia called Jemparingan
Thumbs up for the description
They did, if they got stabbed in the chest.
Your bow look cool!! Where you get it?
Watching this after seeing a guy shoot 3 arrows in less than a second. I'm dissapointed
No one mentioned how you're wearing a print of European armor while shooting an Asian style bow?
1:12 every video game ever the biggest question is where did you put that in?
May the Father of understanding guide us
alright who else saw the shirt and let out a mental 'DEUS VULT!'?!?! dont tell me i'm the only one!
Dayum...this guy is Mongorian.
Nu, I think you killed him
I used to hunt quail with a historical recurve and I thought I was pretty good but holy crap Olympic archers are like wow 😂
Zachary Lancon
From 1964 through 1990, I also enjoyed useing a recurve for hunting pheasants on the wing.
Archery for birds is a great challenge🎯
I still shoot targets with longbow and keep one recurve strung for emergency.
*HOW DID YOU KNOW THIS WAS ON MY RECOMMENDED?*
when u have releaxed holding arm when executing the bow should just jump off from hand...
Nusensie anyone that disagrees with you is a damn fool
awesome hoody
@NUSensei THAT'S MY BOW!!!! It's a Toth, right?
@@NUSensei Really happy you replied back as the video is like 7 years old. I'm new to this sport and I have binged the whole of last weeks evenings and this weekend on the channel. 😂🤣 Amazing content!! 👏 Not only are you providing reviews, hints and tips. I'm learning the history of Archery aswell. Thank you. 😊
Great work.
Nice hoodie
Warbow archers don't, but in mpunted archery, a lot of our world ranked archers do, but at great speed, and it's not a true swing. It's a 'follow through' I don't like it but a lot do.
What do you think about turkish short bows for speed and agility
