They arent "random" thoughts. These thoughts just come up so fast from other related things that its seems random.

This is why we can make connections with things that are seemingly unrelated because we speed through a million related things to find the parallel before we even know what we are doing. We are almost instinctually clever.

I have ADHD and the education system is completely the opposite way of how my brain works. My brain likes to learn things by exploring and discovering things on my own. School just force-feeds you information but I still got a 3.6 GPA in school. It’s a disadvantage in school but an advantage in life.

Just seen this on Ned Hallowell's page
Listed below are criteria for adult ADHD that we developed from our clinical experience:
A sense of underachievement, of not meeting one’s goals (regardless of how much one has actually accomplished).
      Difficulty getting organized.
Chronic procrastination or trouble getting started.
Many projects going simultaneously; trouble with follow through.
A tendency to say what comes to mind without necessarily considering the timing or appropriateness of the remark.
A frequent search for high stimulation.
      An intolerance of boredom.
Easy distractibility; trouble focusing attention, tendency to tune out or drift away in the middle of a page or conversation, often coupled with an inability to focus at times.
      Often creative, intuitive, highly intelligent
Trouble in going through established channels and following “proper” procedure.
      Impatient; low tolerance of frustration.
Impulsive, either verbally or in action, as an impulsive spending of money.
Changing plans, enacting new schemes or career plans and the like; hot-tempered.
A tendency to worry needlessly, endlessly; a tendency to scan the horizon looking for something to worry about, alternating with attention to or disregard for actual dangers.
      A sense of insecurity.
Mood swings, mood liability, especially when disengaged from a person or a project.
      Physical or cognitive restlessness.
      A tendency toward addictive behavior.
      Chronic problems with self-esteem.
      Inaccurate self-observation.
Family history of ADHD or manic depressive illness or depression or substance abuse or other disorders of impulse control or mood.
Do you see what is happening? That is 99% of the population.
It's called being normal. It's called being human. It's called not being a robot. It's me. It's you. It's our neighbors. It's people we work with. It's our family. It's Ned Hallowell.

To be diagnosed with ADHD you need only five of the following criteria.
Can you keep your face straight?
Fails to pay close attention to tasks.
Has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks.
Does not seem to listen to when spoken directly.
Does not follow through on instructions.
Has difficulty organizing tasks and activities.
Avoids or dislikes tasks requiring sustained mental effort.
Loses things necessary for specific tasks.
      Easily distracted by external stimuli.
      Forgetful in daily activities.
      Fidgets with hands and feet.
Leaves seat in situations where remaining seated is expected.
Runs about when inappropriate to do so.
Has difficulty engaging in leisure activities quietly.
Often on the go or acts as if driven by a motor.
      Talks excessively.
      Blurts out answers.
      Has difficulty awaiting turns.
      Interrupts or intrudes on others.d

Having ADHD is the farthest away from being an advantage. Yes, it might make u more creative and maybe you can hyperfocus on important things. But what you'll be able to comprehend is how frustrating it is to be constantly be distracted even when ur engaged in a conversation and you CARE about what the other person is saying. Still you don't pay attention and say "what?" Like 10 times during the conversation. It's frustrating when you constantly misplace things and forget to do everything and even forget your thoughts 0.5 sec after having them and move on to the next thought. You can't remember names of people you just met no matter how many times they tell you. You can't study you can't be productive you won't get good grades and keep panicking when deadlines approach. This is just my experience thats why I'm being so blunt.
It's a struggle. It's not an advantage. Oh i so wish it was.

I agree to having all those things as well. But I don't hate my ADHD. The only thing that stands out to me from everyone else (that is ADHD free) is that I'm different than them. I see things in a different way than they will ever do. My mind is mapped differently. Also that my imagination is quite spectacular and beyond. I can _see_ sounds. I can have conversations with myself in mind. I can play any song in my mind, switch between channels, sometimes they overlap, but it's okay. I don't know what being normal is, but it must be boring. I feel unique.

Honestly I feel the same way about everything in my life except it hindering success. If your hyperfocus or interest is becoming successful then it will manifest. With regard to relationships and even my marriage I struggle due to it in pretty much every aspect except my due diligence with investments and making money. If I were to put a finger on it I'd say I spent so much of my life upset and knew I'd be depressed forever unless I found the solution, and when I found it I hyperfocysed and never stopped. I hated working so water to find a way to stop having to

Do you really think that if someone could choose between success or repeated failure, they'd choose failure every time? Do you think people choose higher rates of depression, abusive/broken relationships, self harm, suicide, disordered eating, and addiction just because they can't be bothered to 'put in some effort'? Do you think we're choosing a 1/2 chance of being excluded and lonely during most of our childhoods? Do you think we're choosing a more difficult and stigmatised life just because it's convenient?
    Please, learn some perspective.

I was horrifically depressed since childhood. It was relentless. I assumed it would ultimately end me somehow. About twelve years ago I randomly accepted the offer from a friend of a few doses of mushrooms. I did them two consecutive nights alone. First night was pretty mild. The second night? Wow. I saw my depression from every angle, realized much. Next day: depression totally gone. Never came back, never coming back. It's like it's a forest far away I can remember, and could probably find again with enough effort, but it has zero impact on anything in my life or mind. They honestly saved my life and improved it immensely. I never did them again, either. I wish there was a good, organized way to administer them to people who would benefit from them.

My boyfriend has ADHD and autism. He's constantly bored, highly impulsive and struggles to sleep. But he's also very intelligent, analytical and can focus for hours on a task he enjoys. For example, he never stops talking about his obsession - money. He budgets endlessly, drives me insane with his continuous adding up and checking how much money we have and need. As a result we have never missed a bill payment, never run out of cash for food, and always have enough aside to get things we enjoy. He's utterly amazing, but I still wouldn't call ADHD an advantage. He struggles with anxiety and depression, and his impulsivity has caused problems with drinking, gambling and inappropriate behaviours that luckily our friends know about and support him with.

People who think ADHD is fake: either go educate yourself or shut up.
A person with it is not a person that is just more active and goofier!
I am so angry right now. ADHD in its worst form is a disorder that causes huge irritability, extreme forgetfulness, the pain of not being able to focus on anything and accidents that come from not being able to pay attention like others do.
ADHD is hell and NO it never will be an advantage. Yeah, maybe you're more creative, maybe you are charming, but the negatives outweigh the positives and it is not something you want.
People who only act as if they have the disorder to get the medication are the reason nobody takes it serious anymore.
ADHD is not fake. If you think it's fake, go read a book. There are so many scientific explanations on why ADHD is a real issue.

One minute I’d be searching about how to replace a computer’s power supply, and then suddenly I’d have like 10 tabs about who invented the battery and how they function, etc. School is the complete opposite of how I learn things, which explains why I struggled so much. Also it’s as if I’m two different people. I’m honestly a rather shy and calm person but then another side of me wants to be outgoing and relentless. I have a deep desire to control myself but I never can. The fact others can do it so effortlessly makes me very depressed. This eventually lead to anxiety issues. It’s ruined so many aspects of my life I can’t even put it into words anymore 😞

I hate it when they say ADHD is a superpower. Sure it can lead to me being more creative, but I also feel like it has more cons than pros. ADHD is not just going “hey look! A squirrel!”, it’s executive dysfunction, being literally impossible/uncomfortable for me to stay in a single position for longer than 5 minutes. It being all or nothing when it comes to getting work/chores done. Sensory issues, things being too loud, too bright, a shirt that’s normally fine being too scratchy. Inability to focus even if there’s no distractions. And if I read something, I often go “wait, what did that say?” I constantly forget what I just watched or read, even if it’s about a hyperfixation. It’s the farthest thing from a superpower, in my opinion.

one of the biggest problems I have with adhd is the fact that no matter how much I try to pay attention in like reading something, i'll end up not remembering what I've just read, and I have to read it like it like 10-15 times, it gives me a big discomfort reading something I don't even care, not only I have to force myself to focus I also have to stay away of other thoughts, which is really stressing for me, it also makes me anxious because whenever I'm sad and I try to think of something else, my mind keeps thinking of what is making me sad, and normal people may say thats normal, but for people with adhd is really extreme and painful, at least with me, but on the other sider, it's really good for making connections, for paying attention to very small details without even knowing it, it makes me really fast at thinking, when I try to think of something my mind makes a lot of connections that are helpful, gives a really good and different way of thinking, and when you have the right stimulus you get really excited on something, for example, when I feel challenged at math i get really excited and I love it, those kind of intelectual challenges makes us really excited, those who think that people with adhd have learning dificulties and are more likely dumb are ignorant, we just dont think, study and act in the conventional way, but when we find what work for us we get really really good at it, sadly this society is more prepared for people that just work in a straight line and dont think outside of the box than for people like us

I never saw it as an advantage. I’ve taken medication since I was in third grade, all with varying degrees of success and failure. School was horrible for me, and to a degree it still is now that I’m in my second semester at college. Despite being on a medication that works for 12 hours, I still get distracted sometimes and struggle with talking to people. It’s not that I can’t concentrate when I talk to them, it’s because the amount of constant anxiety and classmates either distancing themselves from or not even realizing I’m there because I’m that quiet. And the sad thing is I never really realized or cared about how lonely I was until I graduated high school. It hurts when no one wants to talk to you, but it’s another thing when you’re completely self aware and want to get to know others, but can’t at the same time because deep down you’re afraid that they’ll leave like everyone else did in the past

I have ADHD, also I take IB classes and deal with a lot of stress. Living with ADHD is extremely hard, not to mention if you have other medical problems. I usually have such a hard time studying and sometimes I feel completely unmotivated; well lets be honest, constantly unmotivated. People expect you to function and work to a higher standard when they don't know what it is like to have a brain like yours. Despite these challenges however I am top of my class in IB courses and I actually like learning certain subjects like science and math. Even though I am not perfect, I am extremely happy that I have even been given the privilege to take IB courses, I even went to a private school before this that was so hard that I couldn't keep up with anyone, and I left when I couldn't afford it.
However, there is one thing I noticed about people with ADHD, and that one thing is that people with ADHD cannot simply thrive in the environment they are put in even if they work as hard as they possibly can. We have to discover what works best for us, sure we are not as motivated, smart or attentive as others but we are unique. We will only be able to express how unique we are when we learn to accept ourselves, and then and only then will we thrive and surpass everyone else, because they can never be as energetic, innovative, carefree, open-minded and special as we are.
P.S I don't think I'd want a neurotypical brain like everyone else anyway, because then I would only be influenced by what society tells me and that would make us as ordinary, boring and bland as everyone else.

    I ended up in a mental hospital for 13 weeks because of the effects of 13 years of undiagnosed ADHD. I failed huge chunks of school and cannot do basic things a lot of the time. It can only possibly be an advantage if you are the following;
    a) diagnosed early in life and have very few symptoms due to being able to treat it basically from day one (which is often especially difficult for AFABs (Assigned Female at Birth individuals)),
    b) are in an inclusive, accepting, caring and healthy social environment with family, friends and in school (mentors included)
and c) your educational environment is willing to adapt like 30-65 % of everything to your needs without requesting loads of additional costs.
And those factors in combination with one another are so damn rare it's like hitting a jackpot at birth.
If ADHD is a superpower; earth is krypton.

I didn't eat, I didn't go to the bathroom, I didn't think about ANYTHING except building the computer.

I like the positive outlook of adhd in this, I really do. Sadly though, the reality for a lot of us is so much different. Sure, if I’m the right career we can excel; but getting to that point sometimes feels near impossible. Anyone who has adhd knows this struggle, the complexities of performing simple tasks, or getting trivial things done, while an ant hill to most, often becomes a mountain for us. It’s becoming a trend to view adhd as this quirky little disorder but in all actuality its something I wouldn’t wish on anyone. The stress, the anxiety, the mishaps deemed failures by societal standards puts a toll on everyone that suffers with it. Again, I love this idealism of an unfortunate situation, but the truth of it is that life will most likely never be easy for most of us, even if we are on medication. I apologize for the melancholy but it’s a simple truth you eventually come to terms with.

Maybe you’re unusually good at noticing things in people etc. All of these things can be used to your advantage, the power is in knowing you have ADHD so you can at least manage the downsides, while doing what you can to put yourself into the best situation for how your brain works. That’s why it may not be considered a neuro developmental disorder to some, because it’s so well tuned to particular tasks that neuro typical people are mediocre or bad at.

The worst part of ADHD (for me) is reading and reading comprehension. I find it a lot harder to focus on reading, and that made it really hard for me earlier before I had better analysis skills (and I still often struggle greatly with analysis in reading). I’ll often think of something else and end up rereading what I just read. This didn’t hit me too hard until I started studying for the ACT and the SAT when I realized that I would need to really work on improving reading speed overall. Most of the time, I am able to understand a passage, but often it just doesn’t click.

I'm a college student and im not diagnosed but I heavily suspect i have adhd. All I wanted to say was that I agree. I have to read things more than once and lose focus over and over again especially when there is the tiniest distraction around me, but that being said, literature and reading are still one of my favorite subjects. It takes me forever to keep up with other students, but I feel like I come up with the most bizarre out of the box perspectives on what we read when I do eventually understand it. I'm not saying it's going to be easy because adulthood for me has been a wreck so far because I'm way too damn slow, distracted and overwhelmed to adult properly. But what I will say is that there is a place for our brains sometimes

I've taken a friend's vyvanse once (kinda recreational kinda not) and instead of feeling scared and speedy, it calmed me down and slowed my pace from the usual rapidfire adhd pace. thinking about switching from concerta.
(also, not to condone illegal activity, but taking a moderate dose [2-3 grams] of magic mushrooms JUST ONE TIME can be extremely helpful. it gives nice insight and helps with understanding and managing adhd. and they're non-addictive too.)

I was never diagnosed with ADHD, however between 2nd and 8th grade I constantly had teachers tell my parents that I needed to be checked for it. (My parents saw psychiatric disorders more as an embarrassment than a disease) Only now that I’m in my 30s they finally listen. I also told them that Michael Phelps and Bill Gates have ADHD and their success is a result of it. Now looking back they actually see what my teachers were talking about.

I know this is like 4 years late but. If you have ADHD there is barely a advantage. I have ADHD. Like most people have said in the comments. On medicine we hyper focus and don't know what is going on around us. This is my experience with what happened to me in 7th grade. The School I went to knew about my ADHD. So my English teacher put me by the door. I forgot to take my medicine that day and there was a slight noise in the hall way. I could not stop looking at the hall way wondering what that sound was. The next thing that happened was my English teacher said to me," Do I need to shut the door since the hall is distracting you apparently." My teacher does know I have ADHD. So she shut the door but that did not stop me from looking at the hall. So the next day I took my medicine and I walk into class and my English teacher told me, " Am I going to have to shut the door for you today or will the class have to suffer in the heat because of you." In my school if you shut the doors to the classrooms it gets really hot in the classrooms. That teacher still has her job though because the school said that I should have remembered to take my medicine. But if anyone has ADHD, a teacher might have said this to you in different words than what my teacher told me. But what makes this worse in not only do I have ADHD, but I also have separation anxiety, social anxiety, and if I ever had to present or record anything for a class I have panic attacks so thats great.

The key to succeeding with ADHD (once you leave school because that is what it is) is to find work that is intense and engaging. No accountancy or cubicle stuff… don’t become a manager… something that is intense and requires big ideas and needs you to constantly be forced to work in the now! I found working in a busy cafe switches off your wandering brain becomes you’re intensely engaged in what’s happening right now.
Same goes for video work that I do now. My only issue is with editing, so as I’m understanding that I have ADHD I’m looking to outsource my editing because I just can’t get round to it half the time even if I’m good at it or have good ideas etc.
I see a lot of teenagers in the comments sounding pretty depressive, and I 100% get it. People don’t appreciate it, I didn’t even know I had it which just meant I thought I was a piece of crap growing up… so at least if you know you have it, keep working on how to be more effective. Choose subjects that make sense for someone with ADHD or teachers who you work well with. I was personally told not to come back to further study to my favourite subjects (again, not knowing I had ADHD) and then ended up doing one of them at university lol
I’ve found my biggest talent is talking with my clients, especially creatively minded ones, as we can generate huge ideas and progress loads of potential concepts in 20 mins that has taken them years to build towards. Maybe a lot of ADHD people are good with people if you make sure you’re talking in the right context. Small talk? Nah, don’t bother. Arbitrary life plans or boring life goals you think you should have? Forget about it! Literally talk about bizarre ideas and dreams until you find someone who smiles and agrees with you. Those are your people. People who get excited or are fascinated by your thought patterns are your people! And they exists as bosses, teachers, lecturers, coworkers and friends!
Keep at it, it’s hard sometimes working in a very ridged system like school. But you can pursue your passions outside of school, find your people!!!

The way you'll get an ADHD kid to do a specific task is to give constant consequences to their actions, be it bad or good.
What you shouldn't do is tell said ADHD kid that they aren't allowed to move, because they'll invest all their energy and concentration into not moving, which decreases concentration.

That's not really what I meant with constant consequences, it's not constant. Sometimes he talks, sometimes he walks around, but I assume he didn't get sent to the dean as soon as he opened his mouth or actually stood up. If you actually kept praising him for not doing those things, he'd be more inclined to not do those things. You have to balance negative praise and positive praise, if one doesn't work, do the other.

There are countless roads and paths that all lead to the same destination. I know it's frustrating, don't give up. Hit the nail on the head with this comment. I massively agree. A lot of people are saying it’s more of a disadvantage. I think it’s advantageous in the sense that I’m not a typical brainwashed obedient member of society. I like to learn what I like to learn about when it suits me and the same goes for thought in general. I do what I have to do to get by in society but ultimately I like to let my brain and thoughts function as they please.
You cannot fit a square peg in a round hole. Also I think we know we could achieve great things if we really want to. Sometimes we do start but we just get bored halfway through…. Which just means we no longer want to achieve it and there’s problem in that 🙂

Read the article in Wikipedia. I am self-diagnosed, and this video actually made me understand and identify myself more.

Going through multiple hoops consistently is necessary to "prove" you're valuable to Capitalism. I was diagnosed late in life. I've never held more than a entry level job. It's infuriating.

@@threadbearr8866 I was diagnosed early in life thankfully, as a kid teachers would always complain that I just could not listen, it always seemed so easy for everyone else except me. Being forced to do something is where I struggle because one of ADHD's only advantages is that you have a lot of creativity but having to do something an exact way doesn't let you express your creativity. Nowadays most people only view ADHD at its surface with them assuming that the only symptoms are "being unable to sit still" and "being unable to concentrate" but it comes with so much more than that. It comes with depression, being stuck in a rut of self doubt and poorly developed verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Thankfully I have found some coping mechanisms but my ADHD will always be an underlying problem
