Hi 👋 ! My Name is Alice, I created The Mini ADHD Coach in august 2020 when I was just diagnosed with ADHD at 29.
After years of questioning, therapy, burnout, and chaotic career path changes, I finally understood why I struggled with so many things.
So I decided to share what I learned to raise awareness around ADHD and help the ADHD community thrive.

Did you know that people diagnosed with ADHD often experience the condition quite differently from one another? This is because each individual’s condition is a little varied… but also because there are different identified types of ADHD. Each type has different symptoms and traits that stand out, impacting life in a range of ways.
In recent years, valuable research has shown that ADHD is much more complex than originally thought. If you feel like you’re struggling to process your diagnosis against what the average person believes ADHD to be, it’s okay! You’re not alone.
The three different types of ADHD are hyperactive-impulsive type, inattentive type and combination type, which feature symptoms of the first two types.
    Hyperactive-impulsive type ADHD
Hyperactive and impulsive type is characterized by impulsive actions and hyperactivity. Those diagnosed with this type of ADHD may also display inattention and a lack of focus, but hyperactivity and impulsive behavior will be much more prominent in day-to-day activity.
Some of the common symptoms of someone with this type of ADHD include constantly feeling restless and fidgety, talking a lot and fast, having trouble engaging with quiet and relaxing activities, general impatience, and impulse purchasing. Inappropriate comments and speaking without considering what you are saying are also symptoms of this type.
These symptoms can make learning tough, particularly in a classroom setting. Research has shown that people who identify as male are more likely to be diagnosed with this type, particularly younger boys. To receive a diagnosis of hyperactive-impulsive type ADHD, a child up to the age of 16 must have at least 6 symptoms. If you are 17 or older, you must have at least 5 symptoms. These symptoms, in both children and adults, must have been present for at least 6 months.
    Inattentive type ADHD
Inattentive type ADHD is typified more so by symptoms of inattention, rather than high energy levels and impulsivity. Usually, someone who has been diagnosed with inattentive ADHD will find it more difficult to maintain attention, struggle to remain focused and will often have trouble following detailed directions.
As with any type of ADHD, the symptoms of inattentive type will often vary from person to person. Do you become bored quickly? Find it hard to follow instructions? Perhaps you are easily distracted and at times, struggle to listen? Or maybe someone has said to you in the past that you always look like you’re daydreaming. These are all common symptoms of inattentive type ADHD.
However, while there are identifiable symptoms, it is important to remember that there is no clear-cut divider between the different types. That means that even though you may well have been diagnosed with inattentive type, you could still experience impulsivity and hyperactivity at times. Interestingly, inattentive type ADHD is statistically more common in those who identify as female than male.
In the past, inattentive ADHD was referred to as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), without reference to hyperactivity. Now, however, inattentive type more accurately comes under the umbrella of ADHD. To be diagnosed with this type of ADHD if you are 16 or under, you will need to present 6 or more symptoms for at least 6 months. If you are 17 or older, you must present at least 5 symptoms, also for 6 months or more.
    Combined type ADHD
Combined type ADHD is exactly what it sounds like. Those diagnosed with this type of ADHD display six or more symptoms of inattentive type, and six or more symptoms of hyperactive-impulsive type. This means that someone diagnosed with combined type will likely experience hyperactivity and impulsivity, while also struggling with inattention and distractibility. It may be difficult for them to concentrate in class or at work, and they will likely struggle with self-control.

    What's your ADHD type 🤔?

  • @hhhffflll

i have combined adhd. someone told me recently, "no offence, but i heard that people with adhd are normally hyperactive and always have extra energy. however, you always seem tired and low energy". this wasn't because this person was curious, rather doubtful of my diagnosis. i know it's not something to be upset about, but it made me sad having to explain myself. i also learned to mask and have past trauma to deal with, so it is only normal that my adhd presents itself differently. just like everyone elses.

I think the reason ADHD is sometimes misdiagnosed for bipolar disoder is the "combined" type. If you dont fall into one or the other- and you gravitate to highs and lows of attention- that makes sense it would be confused. just as inattentive would be confused with depression.

What if you think that you have ADHD but don't want to get a diagnosis?
Through my driving lessons I've noticed that all of the innatentive symptoms apply to me perfectly. I've asked my family members and they all share the exact same experience when it comes to driving or paying attention in general, especially in school and during conversations. We all zone out, miss obvious details, day dream to avoid boredom, ...
The reason I don't want to get a diagnosis is because I'm afraid of wasting the doctor's time. I'm also scared that the doctor will think I'm just another one of those Tik Tok gen Z people who thinks that having ADHD is cool. On top of that, I'm an overly anxious hypochondriac so it might be possible that I'm indeed just another Gen Z person who imagines stuff. But no matter if I have ADHD or not: I don't feel comfortable going to the doctor's with it. And I mean, what do you do with the diagnosis anyway? Does it even help you anywhere in life or is it just there?

the thing with adhd is that nearly everyone experiences these symptoms from time to time, but those with adhd experience it so frequently and severely that it impacts every aspect of their lives (work, study, personal life, relationships). I'd been struggling with these symptoms for as long as I've remembered, but I was also scared to see a psychiatrist to get diagnosed. But it got to a point where my life felt like it was falling apart because of my struggles in work and my personal life. There are also a number of reasons why you might be experiencing the symptoms too (mental health issues, trauma, other conditions, things like iron deficiency with inattentiveness especially) - but it's up to the psychiatrist/s to decide I guess.
It sucks, but it isn't uncommon for people to try a few different doctors before getting one that isn't an absolute prick. I was fortunate enough to get an understanding one straight up.
If you're struggling with it, I would highly recommend seeing a doctor.
The purpose of getting diagnosed (with anything) is so that you can get treatment - medication, therapy, other strategies, that are specifically catered to the disorder.
Most of the people I know with adhd are using meds and it helps us to function like normal human beings during the day, so that we're not crippling under the pressure of our own chaotic brains

I was diagnosed with inattentive ADHD back in 5th grade and I’ll have to admit realizing that I’m not normal was hard to cope with. But as I’ve grown older I’ve realized that I can’t change myself and have learned to accept it. Sure it gets hard sometimes and I get frustrated when I can’t figure something out as quickly as someone who doesn’t have a learning disorder does but I’ve learned that just cause I’m different doesn’t make me dumb I just need a little more time than others to process things and take in new information

I’m the hyperactive type of ADHD,
and because I’m female, I went under the radar until my mid 20s.
People just thought I was insecure when I was brawling, fighting a lot or ‘driven’ by compulsion when I was restless and impulsive and lazy when I wouldn’t focus on studying and kept performing well enough to pass classes but not as well as I could have performed.
Because of my gender, I was forced into a social role that I tried to fit in and that meant a lot of coping mechanisms and hiding until I burned out. I sought professional help and was diagnosed immediately, I checked all boxes for hyperactive ADHD right off the bat.
It’s been a rough journey since then but knowing what the problem is, i at least know what I’m dealing with and it’s less scary now.

im 16 and i was diagnosed with combined after having a brief talk with my therapist about my behavior in school and social events (most of the time ive been told i look like i was dreaming by everyone around) and i completely spaced out while watching and he was a bit frustrated bc of that in which he further confirmed the condition
my therapist is one who directed me to this video saying that its more better for me to watch something on the internet than sleeping through while listening his diagnostics 💀
and im from a country who thinks having a disorder mentally is non-existent mostly saying that it's delusional and just it being a lazy mindset and being stupid when people like me are actually really struggling while having a disorder physically is real 💀💀 but it's all good :D
P.s. im diagnosed with anxiety, depression and recently combine ADHD (in which the ADHD is hereditary in my family apparently bc both my parents have either the two ADHD and my brothers as well and im the only one that has combined)

Got diagnosed with inattentive type, but I never really talk about how sometimes I can be impulsive and think without talking. Mainly because I know I only act like that to people I'm close to. I'm starting medication and seeing how it goes! I found out recently because I was scared I'd be the "gen z idiot who self diagnoses" if I try to explain it, but I just started talking to my doctor and she was like "yep you definitely got it." I was first diagnosed with depression by a different doctor and it never really worked out. Antidepressants never worked and I never really felt "depressed" just couldn't focus. Word were kind of blurry as I'd daze out. I'm going to try to open up about my hair pulling too. We're considered "gifted and talented" in school but recently it's been getting more difficult to focus and absorb information since now its pure reading and I'm at one of the periods where I just day dream all the time.
My older brother also has it but he's hyperactive impulsive apparently. He always had to have something moving. So when he got diagnosed I was shocked. We're like polar opposites, he's always talking while I only have periods where I can talk, although I get impulsive like he does im most of the time inattentive. It's nice having a sibling that understands what the heck ADHD is since my brother and mother pushed me to talk.

One of the things that made accepting my diagnosis harder was that so many people I expressed my concerns to would hit me with the “you don’t look like you have adhd” and “don’t make excuses”. Thant was hard enough for my impostor syndrome riddled mind, but the fact that close Friends and family didn’t even bother to think about the magnitude of growth I had to go to, the months of research and critical thinking, and instead chose to reveal their ignorance. I’ve come a long way, but thinking back on this still stings.

Something I’ve realized is that I mask so much I sometimes don’t notice I do things or feel certain ways so when I am presented with these questionnaires I need more explanation and examples of what it’s asking than the simple question it presents. So it seems as time goes on I’m MORE ADHD than before but really I’m just learning more about myself that I didn’t understand before.

    • @klltsun_2576

I remember when Im taking questionnaires and I get unsure how to answer. Now I copy-pasted a list of symptoms and whenever I notice I'm displaying one I add a point to the symptom, and hopefully I can keep this up for the needed 6 months. I also learned about how someone's answers can be affected cause they have a coping mechanism, like "do you usually forget planned events" and someone answers "no", but turns out its because they make lists or write it on a calendar, and if they didnt cope like that they would be forgetting events a lot. So yeah same, I'm learning more and noticing more instead of forgetting how much I forget things and have trouble paying attention

How interesting. When I was diagnosed, I was diagnosed with ADD. I had no idea that was even a thing. I always thought having adhd meant being hyper and annoying like a little kid and it finally made sense why I flunked out of college.. twice. If only I had gone sooner! But by the time I looked for help, I had no support system left, and I was struggling with anxiety and depression. Turns out I walked in thinking I was just depressed and a little anxious only to find out I had pretty severe depression, ADD, both generalized and social anxiety which were apparently pretty moderate to server AND bipolar disorder-which came as a REAL shock. It really puts into perspective just how little we're taught about mental illnesses. I thought bipolar disorder meant you were unhinged and violent. Nope! Just like to spend all my money and randomly quit my job book a trip and suddenly shut down when I realized I did something stupid. 😅 loved this video really shined a new light on my late diagnosis.

I took the mini test and these were my results:
    Impulsivity - 1
Seems about accurate. I'm a pretty anxious person so I tend to subconsciously avoid doing things that may cause me stress (although I'll still get stressed anyway).
    Inattention - 5
Focusing in school was extremely difficult for me. I also sometimes have trouble with conversations face to face because my mind wanders off somewhere.
    Physical Hyperactivity - 3
I do get antsy sometimes but considering how I can sit at my computer for hours at a time it's not that bad.
    Mental Hyperactivity - 6
I really did have a lot of trouble sleeping for the longest time due to this. I have found a routine that helps me sleep but it's not a cure-all method.
    Emotional Dysregulation - 3
I would say I'm a relatively numb person most of the time, although things that I'm passionate about can bring out my emotions quite a bit.
    Sensory Sensitivity - 5
This makes sense now because in school sometimes I'd try to focus on my work but I'd take so much notice to the people talking around me which made it impossible for me to focus. It's also a reason why sometimes I get extremely anxious in public because I notice all the people talking around me. Come to think of it, I used to be scared of loud noises like fireworks when I was younger too.
    Forgetfulness - 4
I often find myself getting distracted by things and then forgetting about what I was previously doing almost immediately. Like I might refill my bottle of water and leave it on the counter to go pet my cats or something and I'll return to my room without retrieving my water. I also tend to forget about holidays and such.

It is extremely therapeutic and I've found that when I do a good job making time for this type of meditation, the problem occurs a lot less at times where it's problematic (like trying to sleep, study, listen to somebody). It's not a 100% cure by any means, but it helps. Also, this doesn't work for me, but has helped some of the people I know with ADHD, grey noise while trying to sleep or study sort of fills the emptiness just enough to where their brain doesn't fill it with thoughts.

However, through the second half of 2022 and in February 2023 I had been going through some tests with professionals to see if I had a diagnosis. And in the end of all those visits and tests, they just told me that my IQ was pretty high (within the average scale, so not above average) and whatever struggles with symptoms I have wouldn’t give me too much trouble in my life.
Like okay, that’s not exactly what I came here to know, I don’t care if they are not gonna be trouble for me (as I’ve long since found ways to stimulate and help myself when I need it, before I even knew what ADHD was). I came here to find out if I have a diagnosis or not! Geez…

If I have ADHD, I’m definitely of the inattentive type and I’m glad this video popped up on my home page. Being questioned about why I’m always daydreaming was what resonated the most with me and I’m now pretty confident that I have ADHD. I was born in 1998, so when I was diagnosed with adhd it was for hyperactivity, that "mellowed out with age" and those medications stopped being given to me because of that, and the old criteria. I just recently visited my psychiatrist and discussed that, and how after doing thorough research myself I'm pretty sure it's still an ongoing thing, now knowing that ADHD doesn't commonly go away on its own. He gave me new medication to improve focus, which is hopefully a step in the right direction. After looking at the video I think I may specifically have combined ADHD, as I think I have pretty much everything listed at different times throughout the day. Inattentiveness, impulsively (especially with money), high energy and also low energy at different times, you get the idea. It's all there, at least it seems that way to me. I think this video will be very helpful when discussing this further with him next month.

I work in healthcare. It's kind of sad when I see individuals that want to have something wrong with them. Or a diagnosis with something wrong with them.
They think literally something is wrong with them. 🤔
Then you have individuals that don't really have anything wrong with them-. and take medication. We all have emotions.
It's how you handle those emotions .
We choose to either flatline and show no emotion and don't care about anything.
Or sometimes we care too much and let everything us.
You have to find the balance between both.
Love others and love yourself and others can't love you there's nothing wrong with you it's them. You cannot change people.
But you can always change yourself and make yourself a better person.

I hate having ADHD. I always feel like I am behind everyone else simply because I get too distracted with everything else. I want to be able to just focus and my goals done. But I just can't seem to get it all in line. I have apps that help me by setting deadlines. But it won't helps so much. Because of it all, I get depressed. Seeing others that I grew up with have actual careers while I feel like I have thrown my life away.

Not necessarily. Having ADHD doesn't mean you are a goldfish. And people who take interest in the topic can focus on it just fine.

I have never been tested/diagnosed for ADHD but I feel like I might have it. Some of the things mentioned in this video such as being restless, blurting out inappropriate things, being easily distracted, low energy and struggling to focus resonated with me very strongly. When I was younger I was also very impulsive and hyperactive. That changed when I was around 9 when my parents broke up and shortly after I changed schools. After that I've been more reserved and only get these feelings of impulsivity and hyperactivity occasionally. I think it's to do with unintentional masking and trying to fit in to a new environment and new people.
At school for some reason I can focus really well but at home I feel lost, like I have no motivation to do anything. I try to find new hobbies and learn new things, but ultimately I feel like I'm not interested and thus can't focus on it at all.
I really wanna find out if I have ADHD or if I'm actually just lazy but I'm scared of asking my parents for a checkup on this. Luckily I have an appointment at school in a few weeks where I'm hoping that they do some sort of diagnosis.
Thanks for reading, I felt like I just had to write something about my situation.

Thanks for this video and its clear description of ADHD. I have combined type and though I have learned to manage it well I still struggle daily. Note that it is more correct to say that individuals assigned male at birth are more likely to have hyperactive type and individuals assigned female at birth are more likely to have inattentive type. This wording is more consistent with the research on ADHD types.

Hello, the video is right. We're talking about people who identifie as male or female. Some reserach show that transfeminine girls have a brain far similar to cisgender girl than cisgender male. (same for FtM)

I have the combined version of ADHD. I got my diagnosis when I was 31 years old. Never took any meds. My mom is my ADHD-coach. I got a lot of lists and rituals to getting my things done. I don't eat much sugar and use some natural things to help myself; micronutrients and herbs, get enough sleep, have a quiet environment, work at home...
I was very bad at school, but I went to college with 26 years old. I got a very good master of arts in philosophy. Everything is possible, if you believe in yourself and learning and working topics and things you are highly interested in.

i have been diagnosed with adhd for about 3 months ago now, i struggle with lack of attention which may be a factor to my forgetfulness, i also lack dopamine in my brain which gives me the lack of motivation. adhd is very complicated but its not much of a disability as people think

This makes so much more sense to me now. The hyper side of ADHD is more of a common stereotype of what people think of when they think of ADHD. Which has also made me doubt if I really had it, now I know that know that I have inattentive ADHD. Also my cousin has ADHD and now I know why she is always so much more hyper then me even though I also have it.

I relate to parts of both and mostly on the hyperactive side. I talk fast, am fidgety, and basically all those symptoms except for not being able to focus in class, etc. on the inattentive side i do get bored easily and get distracted a lot. When I can go get diagnosed all by myself I plan to do that since i suspect i have combined. Of course I wont self diagnose, but its on my list of suspicions. I have no idea why I typed all this all this so if you read it all just be glad i tried to use proper punctuation!

Hey hey someone with diagnosed inattentive adhd
Elementary I couldn’t focus, it’s like if all my teachers became the adults in Charlie Brown.
Even when I tried my hardest to I couldn’t focus. I just learned to how write sentences in grade 4-6 when everyone else was writing paragraphs. I learn faster than most students but was was always considered dumb due to this one aspect I couldn’t fix.
I am now on medication and my doctor even expressed how he thought I could even be considered gifted, which was strange to hear as I have never received anything that complimented my intelligence, but was nice to hear.
My point is take care of yourself, if you feel something is different with you, don’t hesitate to go ask a professional, never hurts to check.

    I think I'm a type 3
Growing up, there were moments in my childhood where it shows that I had difficulty paying attention, forgetting stuff easily, becoming hyperactive, impulsively doing or saying something without thinking, and having problems trying to stand or sit still.
For a long time I just thought that I was just being weird and have tried to mask this shame I felt for having these 'quirks' but after going to therapy for about 6 years. At 16, I was professionally diagnosed with ADHD and was given medication for it.

Learning more about ADHD in the goal to support someone else. Then slowly remembering how much you related to all these before and been asked to get diagnosis. But then you don't want to focus on yourself and make it about you, you want to support the other person REMMEBER THE FIRST GOAL SUPPORT THE OTHER😭

I am a combination adhd type. I am good at following directions, i especially enjoy puzzles. I was always accused of daydreaming as a child. I am now in my late 60's. School was very difficult for me, it didn't help that my mom decided i should start kindergarten when i was 4, turning 5 just before the end of the year.
I have taught myself how to deal with my ADHD, mostly.
I am respectful of others who need meds to help control their ADHD. God bless all of us

I do believe I had some form of ADHD. I line up with every single symptom and can picture several examples of times I’ve struggled with them. Just about everyone I’ve ever met outside of my family has mentioned it before I even considered the possibility of having it. Whether it be close friends to literal strangers. It’s sparked me to do some research. Unfortunately my family doesn’t understand the concept of mental health and doesn’t believe most-if not all-diagnoses. I’ve gone this long without any proper diagnoses of any problem so I know I’ll be just fine, but it’s more for understanding myself better to know if I have it or not, alongside other mental-related issues.
