  • Ryan takes the $48,995 Subaru WRX STI Type RA Limited Edition around the Thermal Club Race Track in Southern California. Is this just another warmed-over sticker package or has Subaru made real improvements in the already great WRX STI? Along for the ride is British Rally Champion and #farmkhana hot-shoe Mark Higgins.

    Credit to Subaru for building and selling cars for real driving enthusiasts, that normal people with a job can afford. Really like my blue 2015 STI limited edition. I drive mine like a rally car on back roads all the time. Who else sells a rally car in 2019? Answer: Nobody but Subaru!

    If Subaru is not willing to put a new engine they should give forged internals so the tuning community can go at it without issues .

    Everyone complains about price or an outdated engine. At the end of the day Subaru is still having good sale results. And people still enjoy driving Subaru's. Ford, VW, Audi have there issues too. I work for Mercedes and I’ll take my STI any day instead.

    I AM a bit curious how much of a difference inverted dampers make. They don’t weigh a whole lot, but if you combine the dampers with really light wheels and I imagine it would affect bump response quite a bit in a car like the Impreza. It is somewhat unexciting considering you are still running the same EJ257 mill, although with forged pistons and improved valves.

    Australia brought out a wrx wrp10 . it cost 10k more than the base model wrx . What upgrades did you get sti exhaust system ' sti suspension pink springs ' sti mags ' sti sway bar ' 8kw upgrade ' sti ecu . Why this wrx sti ra costs 12k more more than base sti , the badge probably adds a few k to the price . But if base wrx sti came out like this it wouldn't be Cheaper than 45k in the states , sales would fall because less buyers wouldn't beable to afford a base wrx sti

    Ryan, my 2020 STI has issues overheating the rear diff on the track. Have you ever seen that? Trying to figure out what causes that. Does the standard STI lift it’s inner rear wheel in turns maybe..?

    • @drivingsports
      @drivingsports  4 года назад +1

      Asked a friend that is an instructor and pro racer with a lot of experience with STIs. He said, "Pretty standard issue. Most likely exacerbated by excessive use of throttle mid corner before the car is settled. All AWD and FWD cars are designed to lift and inside wheel to aid in corner entry rotation under heavy brake and initial corner entry. Slamming the throttle down at this time will cause diff fluid to overheat. He needs more front roll resistance, or he needs to wait a moment on corner entry before forcing the DCCD to fix his ham-fisted throttle useage."

    • @PQR5CHE
      @PQR5CHE 4 года назад

      Driving Sports TV Thanks Ryan. Really appreciate the help. Thinking about my driving style, and watching some footage from yesterday, I do indeed slam full throttle almost instantly at Apex and have the AWD do it’s job. Funny thing is that the diff wouldn’t overheat on my OEM Yokohama’s. My car is still stock now, I just have sticky track tires. I guess those sticky tires made it even worse.. ruclips.net/video/dlMFNVSLy5U/видео.html

    You can't buy the car Subaru used to set that record, it was a one of made just for the purpose of setting that record, so the Alfa QV still remains to be the fastest PRODUCTION 4-door sedan you can BUY.

    It seems like the WRX STi has had around 300 horsepower forever. While other manufacturers have seen major upgrades and improvements to their engines, Subaru has made only minor changes. It's way past time for them to design an all new engine and seriously improve performance. They should have at least 350 horsepower

    • @drivingsports
      @drivingsports  6 лет назад

      Afraid we’ll have to wait for a new generation car which is still a couple years away for that.

    • @porscheguy09
      @porscheguy09 6 лет назад

      Driving Sports TV unfortunately you're right. Don't get me wrong, 300+ horsepower is sufficient and moves the STi but while all the competition has been evolving and becoming more powerful the Subaru has been lagging behind and leaving the door open for others to come in and steal the show from them. Hopefully they make a big leap forward whenever the next generation of WRX STi comes along.

    • @WannabeWRX
      @WannabeWRX 6 лет назад +1

      Subaru has never been about the horsepower wars. The WRX and WRX STI outsell their just about everyone in their competitive orbit and has done so for the last 7 model years. Subaru learned well to listen more to the people who actually buy their performance cars.

    Just some friendly feedback, you never answered your own question, is it ACTUALLY worth 50k?? Also the brakes feel better because the RA has 6 pot brembos up front, instead of 4 pot in the STi. And you can modify an sti including piston/valves, just need a good shop!
    😉

    • @drivingsports
      @drivingsports  6 лет назад

      True. We realized that when we put it together, letting the viewer answer it for themselves. Could it have used another script pass? Probably. As for modifying a car to be like this one: yes, would could get close, but you’d spend way more than 10k unless you’re doing all the work yourself. At that point just start with the RA which is a better baseline.

    • @coopsnz1

    Can't be a reliable "review channel" if you truly believe the TYPE RA is really worth 50k. Even engineering explained (plus almost everyone else), says the TYPE RA is no way near worth 50k. This TYPE RA gets dusted by cars from 35k-55k. Golf R, FOCUS RS, CIVIC TYPE R, M2, CLA 45, AUDI S3, should I go on? HOW IS IT WORTH 50k?

    • @drivingsports
      @drivingsports  6 лет назад +2

      Of the cars you listed I would only agree with the Focus RS. The rest are RWD or FWD (totally different in terms of dynamics), some are even more expensive than the Type RA (M2) and the rest I wouldn't trust to lap all day at Willow Springs in August without their engines and brakes overheating.

    • @johndoe-qc2lr
      @johndoe-qc2lr 6 лет назад

      Golf R and S3 are both AWD. The point is, the cars that are 10k-15k less than the TYPE RA perform better overall than the 50k STI. RWD or FWD is irrelevant. Dynamics will be different but performance standpoint at the price, it doesn't cut it for being 50k at all. The M2 is 3k more but the TYPE RA is no where near the M2 in performance. The TYPE RA Is 15k more than the CIVIC type R and is also no where near the performance. Given that all these cars are literally better, how is the TYPE RA worth 50k? is it really 10k better in performance than the Golf R? Nope. Is it close to the performance level of the M2? Nope. You review that the Type RA is worth it, without comparing any other car. How can you review a car not comparing it to cars in the relevant price point?

      It’s more cost effective to have an in house audio unit especially when it comes down to Software issues .... you don’t have to wait for 3rd party companies (ie. Apple , android ) to release updates and hope your audio unit will work after that update is applied. The car manufacturer can release there own updates whenever and deal with software or hardware issues internally...

      Even the base STi is not worth $40k for an aging EJ25 that gets 20mpg. There are 4 cylinder turbos that make 300hp that get 30mpg. If you want to waste your money, then go buy it. I'm not buying this bullshit.

  • @GregLopes
    @GregLopes 6 лет назад +16

    Plus a new ecu tune that makes... 5hp more? Really? So all of that... A cold air intake, a new exhaust, strengthened pistons, and the car makes 5hp more. Subaru needs to get rid of the EJ engine.

    • @mikehundredson584
      @mikehundredson584 6 лет назад +15

      MikeM you don't need a EJ for rumble. The rumble comes from unequal length headers.

    • @GregLopes
      @GregLopes 6 лет назад +1

      Mike Hundredson that's correct the Subaru rumble comes from unequal length headers. It's not inherent to the EJ motor. I'm complaining because this car will never be worth $50,000 as long as it's running the EJ motor. It's time to bury the EJ and move on.

    • @MrBrokehisbollo
      @MrBrokehisbollo 6 лет назад

      A twin charged flat 6 I think would solve a lot of issues (lag) and make the car more premium. It'll sound better than the rumble too.
