Could be formal contact with the Preservers and its members like the Metrons, Aegis, First Federation, etc. There's supposed to be Preserver multiversal gateway outside the galaxy. In the comics, cartoons and novels, Kirk's Enterprise had travelled the multiverse in the Final Nexus TOS novel. It also encountered some multiversal ships that escaped the collapse of their universe and Spock&Scotty was able to "fix" their ship and learn enough of how it works. Also in the Final Nexus novel, they encountered a cyborg that was tasked to collapse the Nexus network and had all of the info on how to safely travel between universes&dimensions. So if anyone can create a multiversal jump drive, it could be OTL Spock. Anyway the TOS novel The Federation, it was mentioned that once the galaxy had unified into a single united confederation of empires, the Preserver Gateway will signal an invitation&reveal its location for the latest Starfleet Enterprise to be able to use it.

I like Discovery. Yes, some parts were rather hokey but it's Star Trek. A show. Even the parts I didn't care for I liked I wish it didn't have to end on season 5. Maybe they could all come back for tv movies?
