I shot a truck load of Speers in the Gold Dot flavor, the 44 cal 270 gr GD is our go to deer load in 444 Marlin, we had very good success with them, never lost a deer, the deer never went more the 50 yards. As a plus, they are the most accurate bullet I have ever shot from the 444, @2200fps, they are outstanding. These so called Deep Curls I have not tested, never will because I have enough GD’s to last me a lifetime, if their anything like the GD’s, they should be a winner!
Those 45-70 bullets have spent many trips to the mountains in my dad's old Marlin 1895. For me putting over 400 miles backpacking it stayed in nice condition over the few years I carried it in a leather scabbard on my pack. Before that u carried his Phelps Heritage 45-70 revolver. That thing was too darn heavy for a hog leg. I always joked that I was going to out a caster on the bottom of the holster. By the way that was the first holster that I made. My dad bought it in 1978 and I was always in awe of it because it was so big. He loaded up some really light loads and let me shoot it when I was 10. I felt like the Kng of the hill until he knocked me down a peg and put a full house load in it and let me know not to get too cocky. I learned a whole new respect for that revolver.
Bbtt - Thanks for the great story of your dad..!! These stories are precious beyond description. That big revolver puts out some serious punishment on both ends for sure...Thanks again for posting this... FC Steve
I just wish Speer would bring back the African Grand Slam solids. I really love the heavy Navy bronze jack and Tungsten carbide core design of that bullet.
Speer bullets have been all I’ve used in reloading so far. I’m no target shooter, I simply handload for hunting purposes. Hot-cors to me are just as effective at taking game than any other typical soft point that’s coming from hornady/sierra so why not save a few dollars and just go with the Speers?
I am loading the Speer BTSP 165gr in my 308. For being a very low priced projectile it is putting up some impressive results. Very low SD with varget and great groups. It often is matching and sometimes outshooting my Hornady bthp match bullets. I have yet to get a deer with them but I expect with the exposed lead nose they should mushroom very nicely. And at just over half the price of the competitors huntings bullets I can afford to use them as Range ammo also, allowing me to practice a lot with the round I use hunting.
Dave L - This video didn't go into the Speer Boat Tails or the Speer Grand Slams - those are other lines of Speer bullets not discussed. Thanks for reporting on your Boat Tails... Continued good shootin' to ya, FC Steve
Always prefered the Gold Dot for my 9mm and 45 acp because of the lack of jacket seperation. Been looking for something like that for my dad's 35 Remington.
cory8791 - The Deep Curls were indeed stopped in production for a while...but they are back and available again...One of the reasons actually for this video. Best to ya, FC Steve
I bought some 35 hot core bullets for my 35 this year. I loaded xtp for my 44 . Shot 2 good deer this year little 100 yards bullets very accurate and done good job.
FortuneCookie45LC And the same to you, my friend. Life is about as good as can be expected, if not hoped for, but that's why we have dreams. One day. Stay safe!
EiNino BigDog - You will see bullets being shot through wood, cinder blocks and ballistic gel. But these Speer bullets have been used extensively in the hunting fields with reports of good performance. They will bring home the venison or bacon with dependability and consistency. For those looking for value in hunting bullets, Speer will give you that. And it remains very OK to like Sierra ProHunters, or Hornady Interloks of course. Best to ya, FC Steve
Just ordered a hundred 250 grain 45 cal deep curl bullets from Midway and can't wait to try them out in my Marlin 1894. They look like they will perform very well and don't have to be pushed very hard to do so.
The “plated” bullets have been available from Speer since WAY before ATK bought CCI/Speer. All of the Gold Dot/Uni-Cor/Deep Curl were a product of Speer only way before ATK!
jimhans1 - Thanks for correcting me on that, I recall that there was that Fusion / Deep Curl flap with ATK / Federal / Speer so I was basing the timeline on that...Have a great day, FC Steve

Have taken moose with a 170 grain Speer hot core out of a 30-06. My Speer boxes are older yellow plastic. Prices have skyrocketed, I have boxes with price of $9.99 per 100, bought some on base for as low as $6.99 per 100.
Ghost Shadow - It's very nice to have supplies of good bullets we can depend upon and are a pleasure to load and shoot.... Continued good shootin' to ya, FC Steve
Hey Steve, been mainly using my own lead bulletcasting bullets. Know, getting more into rifle shooting and looking for good accurate ones. Thank you for the help 🔫🔫
Hey @FortuneCookie45LC, you seem like someone who could find out what happened to habdloads.com. do you know if it is gone forever? Any way you could find out?
koos kleven - I have gone to handloads.com in the past for reference, although I must admit, I've never actually used any of the loads found there. The site is still up and running... Best to ya, FC Steve
I like them, prices are usually cheaper and its a good design!! I have to run some 35's through my old Remington mod 141game master pump action. My latest pick up is the original mod 14 in 30 rem. If you run across one you should snap it up!!
dowdawg - Those are some fine old guns, and yes, they remain fine today - some of the greatest deer and black bear guns for fast woods action ever made. Best to ya, dowdawg..!! FC Steve
Thanks for reminding us of the kinship of the Deep Curl and the Gold Dot. Deep curl is obviously more hunting oriented. I bet the 210 gr 41 cal bullet at abt 1200 fps would be interesting. Slightly below max and very useful. That 250 in a 45 Colt +p would be great too, at say 1100 fps (again, a bit below max- no need to hurt ourselves). When i get a 45-70, hopefully in the near future, that 350 gr hot cor will be on the list. And the 180 gr .358" might be just the thing for my 357 Herrett, when i am able to load for it. Great video
Troy Ortega - Yes, indeed - these are fine bullets and I am stocking up. My intentions are to develop some sweet spot loads to expand my library of good loads. The 350 grainer 45/70s are very cool as we get higher velocity for performance and still keep our back teeth when we touch 'em off..!! The 500 grain hard cast 45/70s are straight line smash penetrators for elk, moose, bison and the bigge bears, and it's a good thing we won't feel the recoil in the field. Best to ya, FC Steve
I just discovered your channel today and subbed. I'm always hungry for more knowledge regarding reloading, so thank you for the content. And it always makes me proud to see a fellow gun enthusiast who is also of Asian descent. 😀👍

Great info , glad I finally caught this video. Will check out others.

I'm a fan of Speer bullets. High quality bullets with great variety at a very reasonable price.

Oh my god, I can’t believe I didn’t think of asking you first for 300gr Deep Curl HP advice in a 18” .45 Colt +P encore!

Dave , glad to hear they run well in your 308. I have some reloads I bought in 150 gr and checked this video out to see how good they are for hunting.
The HotLeadZone!!!!

That's nice pointer you got there teach!

Josue Guzman - That 500 is a serious shootin' machine.... Good shootin' to ya, FC Steve
