I have the KX0-40. I searched for videos showing one running a mulching head. I'm really glad I found you video because it was exactly what I was looking for. You provided an excellent summary of why the 40 can be used with a mulching head and I don't have to spend a $100,000 on a big tracked skid steer with a $30,000 mulching head attached to it.

It's helpful that you posted a video of a smaller mini excavator running a mulcher... but I think it's a bit misleading and perhaps will convince someone to go down the wrong path. I talked to people in land clearing businesses and said they tried (or started on) a non-CDL / cheaper setup like this said they ended up upgrading to a larger machine 1-2 years later. They sold the smaller machine because it was pointless with a bigger machine. Fact is, if you're trying to make money, you can't compete against folks in a 20,000 LB high flow machine, which will do the job better and faster without any downside (yes they're slightly bigger, but not enough to matter). Most mulching jobs are best done with a skidsteer and when an excavator is needed, it's really needed (AKA big stable machine with far reach). If you look around, mulching is very competitive business... many people who got the equipment and looking for work and you gotta stand out somehow. The folks with a small machine like this wont be getting much work or they'll be working cheap - they'll end up with tiny undesirable jobs the other guys don't have time for and these jobs a guy can do a better job with a chainsaw + wood chipper. Something else to point out, is you can clearly the large chunks left behind...many customers wont find this acceptable.

I've been watching closely since you got the 040 to see how it performs. I'm currently running a SVL95 with a UML/VT-175 in Manitoba and want to add an excavator and mulcher. I was thinking an 080 but I'd only really use it for steep road ditches so was thinking about going smaller. It's pretty flat here so my SVL does almost everything. Like you said, that VT motor is worth every penny. Keep up the great commentary, you explain things very well.

We have to move the mulcher head on a separate rig from the excavator that runs it. That’s how we get around the weight restrictions of the vehicles and licensing. Have a class a commercial license but not everyone that works here does. Yeah it takes 2 trucks to move the equipment to the job but thats what it takes sometimes. One day will look at a larger dump and trailer. But for now this gets it done for us.

Here in Ontario you need an AR license to pull a trailer that's over 10,000 lbs. If the trailer is over 6100 lbs than the trucks reg. weight has to include the weight of the trailer. Your annual sticker for the truck gets pretty expensive quickly. My 2500HD is reg. for 4500kg and the sticker is $270. Doesn't make sense if your towing something for personal use you only need a G license. So you can tow a 5th wheel 40' trailer to Florida on a G license.

I'm also thinking of getting into the brush clearing business.
I have been considering trading my Takeuchi TB260 in on a TB290 and getting the whole forestry package.
I'm just not sure what the market is like for available work in my area.
