- This Europa Universalis 4 tutorial series is a how to guide for brand new players to learn the game. Also known as EU4, EUIV, or the proper title of Europa Universalis IV, this is the fourth iteration of the Europa Universalis series by Paradox Development Studio. The campaign was recorded with all available DLC enabled as of early 2017.
I am joined by a fellow RUclipsr, FilthyRobot, who has absolutely zero experience with EU4, and he will help ask questions to cover everything a new player might need to know to play the game. We will cover the basics to the advanced, at a relaxed pace. This series is designed to help new players learn the game from the start, but more advanced players will still learn the finer details to the game.

To install the settings, extract the contents of the .zip file into your *user*\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis IV directory. If you have already played before, you should find two files that will be replaced, messagetypes_custom.txt and settings.txt. You may wish to back these up before installing my versions.

1600 hours. Not watching for the tutorial but for Filthy's input, like the clicking on merchant thing. I'd never even consider something like that.

I have no idea of how many hours of gameplay I've seen, but it's quite a lot at this point. I have learned so much from looking at your videos, without them even being tutorials. That would be my best advice to a new player really, to look up a famous youtuber playing the game. So I wanted to say thank you to you, because I just started playing and it's going really well!
so basically EU4 is:
10% luck
20% skill
15% concentrated power of will
5% pleasure
50% pain
and a 100% reasons to hate France

Seriously how often do you see Castile refusing the Iberian wedding an OPM getting the Burgundian inheritance and Poland saying fuck the Jaglions? Because that happens every damn time unless I need it to happen

I've played 1300 hours of this game. Why on earth am I hyped for a tutorial series? This does not make sense.

Maybe so you can complain about some point Arumba makes to prove you're smarter? That seems to happen a lot in his comments.
Because there is always something new to learn. Like, I'm more of the understanding type, rather than getting into mechanic's details, so hearing Arumba go into those details can sometimes reveal new things. Like the core creation time in some episode, I never cared for it, but it's nice to know why it takes so much time.
I have hundreds of hours in EU4 ... still I'm watching this ... why you ask? I have no idea, but it's Arumba so ... well ... don't judge me :D
Yep. I think they work well together so that in itself is good entertainment.

About 90% of everything I know about EuIV came from watching RUclips videos. I guess this will add to it.
This video series? So very, very necessary. This game's learning curve is so steep it's basically a cliff.

NOTE: the navy privateering mission, i think, is only available "with the Wealth of Nations DLC or the El Dorado DLC enabled". Counterespionage requires Mare Nostrum DLC

Best series to get into EU4 at the moment! Not only is it almost up to date but also having someone who has no clue about the game is absolutely the best way to watch you explain the game. Many of the questions asked, are questions I had myself :)

I personally never played EU4, but I love your channel arumba. I thought about buying eu4 but was a little daunted by the prospects of all the mechanical complexity, and now you have a tutorial series.

Hey Arumba, I learnt so much about the ins and outs of EUIV from your previous campaigns, I can't think of anyone better to do a tutorial series.
Love the tutorial. It goes at a clear, relaxing pace. Maybe a tip: Let the viewer know what expansions are required (to literally follow every step taken in the video) ^^
This is shaping up to the best tutorial series I have watched on EUIV - I love the idea of paradox games but have yet been unable to get into them fully as there is so much to understand. If this is successful, I would love to see similar for CKII, HOI4 and Stellaris. Looking forward to episode 2.

I have tried to play this so many times and I've gotten confused with how complex it is, and that's coming from someone who play ck2 very often! I look to watching and learning with filthy robot!
This really made me think about what a complex game EU4 is after all. When you've played over 1000 hours everything seems so obvious and simple.

Great video and series. I have tried to play this game and found it difficult with so many options. These videos help considerably. Like the interactions between seasoned and newcomer to EU4.

Thank you! Got through 10 episodes and loved you telling me how to play. But dude you're teaching keeps asking too many questions, especially about the numbers and boats, it got annoying, but you handled it properly... it was slowing things up for a couple episodes...
Wonderful I've been wanting this for SO long ! I have been playing other games, just bought all the DLC's on sale and here is a tutorial so I can update my knowledge of the game : perfect :D

I've played 194 hours of this game, to some people that would be loads, but I genuinely believe that even with that many hours, I am still 'new' at this game.
Love the content with Filthy and this series is especially interesting
to me as someone who has thousands of hours in CK1 and 2 and hundreds of
hours in vicky 1 and 2 but who has bounced off EU4 every attempt.
I feel like at some point in this game there will be a moment of clarity for Filthy when the broader picture of what is going on in EU4 comes into focus and he'll catch the grand strategy bug. Nothing against Civilization but a mind like his is wasted on such a relatively simple game that obfuscates so much information. Hopefully when this series runs it course we see a Cyborg Team Savoy next (like Tac team but with one human and one robot).
This is gonna take like 1000 episodes and I am sooo ready

I'm also rather new to EU4 after many years of Civilization (back to Civ 1), and I'm excited about this series especially since I have enjoyed Arumba's other EU4 videos.
I would also recommend quill18's tutorial videos (search for "quill18 eu4 tutorial") for new players who might want a more focused introduction that is complete right now. It is only 8 videos: 7 main tutorial videos and an additional one focusing on the Holy Roman Empire. It covers mostly the same topics as the game tutorial, but with much better explanations.
I haven't played since 1.12. I needed this to come back.

The reason clicking merchants brings you to your capital is because they're unassigned. Clicking the icon while they're assigned will cycle through the location for each merchant so you can easily tell where each one is in the event you've forgotten.

Yeah same thing goes for diplomats, colonists, and missionaries lol. I find these useful if I ever decide to disable one of them in the outliner
I really hope Filthy is not gonna be discouraged by the things they have to brush over in the beginning to get to the essential stuff

Really want to learn how to play EU4, so I looked up a tutorial. Found this playlist for beginners with 136 videos. Holy crap. Does it really take 136 videos to teach someone to play this game? That's really daunting.

People said that you weren't good? you conquered the world for crying out loud. Very few people are able to top that. I can barely form Germany in ironman without restarting 3 times.
Papa Francesco I know right. Fair enough, Arumba isn't the best eu4 player ever, probably not even the best one that makes videos, but he is still better then most people playing it, atleast top 5%.
Sir Flanelshirt well since he makes videos he is probably getting compared to DDRjake, and if someone is getting compared to jake they look like shit, unless they are florryworry, he comes semi-close
People want to think they are better than someone. Arumba's achievements speak for themselves. There are probably better players, but not many.
It's like that for any streamer. I watch a lot of Kripparian for Hearthstone, too, and people are always complaining that they think this play or that play was bad and they are sure they are right and they are better at the game. Then Blizzard releases actual stats and shows Kripparian is the 3rd best Arena player in NA overall.
Generally, people who are sure they still have a lot to learn about a game are pretty good, and people who are sure they know everything suck. There are exceptions, but that's a good general rule.
The main difference between Arumba and the most of us is that he thinks EVERY step. He is always using his calculator to make sure he has the advantage. I have 1000 hours in this game and I dont think he is better than me, he just play more "serious" when the most just think "fuck it, I got this". (Sorry for my english).
Fran Martínez Gálvez It's not necessarily more "serious" his way. I find sometimes he does overanalyze, agonizing over the thousandths to make an ultimately insignificant decision while letting that inner debate blind him to something else more significant that happens elsewhere. It's a unique problem; as you say, MOST players probably suffer from the opposite malady, that of underanalyzing and making a poor decision because they don't want to get into the details.
Ultimately, it's more of a playstyle than effectiveness difference. If you really enjoy the numbers and math and all just by itself, you play Arumba's way, because you can spend thirty minutes with the game paused thinking over a single decision and calling that fun.

Arumba, you can actually select trade nodes (for both protect and privateer) on the map after selecting the mission. Sometimes that's easier. Obviously not in that circumstance (and you probably knew that anyways).

To cut some corners for new players.
Find out what is possible for your nation, or within your power to achieve.
Use that power efficiently to gain more of it.
Snowball to victory and feed your sense of self importance.
Pause button is your friend.
Look at the notification settings sooner rather than later!! it'll save you a headache.
I can blast through a game in less than 10 hours. I do play semi tall in those though and I don't normally expand out of a single region in less colonizing. The point stands though that it doesn't take 100s of hours to get through a game

Clicking on the merchant icon will take you to their location. Not placed merchants are considered to be in your capital.

What happens if Britain send its navy to the trade node you are privateering? War? Do you start losing ships or just fail to make any money?

I feel like that is my major problem with EU4. I tend to drop the game for a few months at a time (because whenever I get invested in the game the next big patch breaks save files) and the game just keeps changing more and more. I can't get a firm grip on the game's mechanics until they decide to stop releasing new content

Coming from someone who has played about1500 hours, the average game takes around 35 hours while playing speed 3-4.for most of the game (with lots of pausing during big wars)
