I meant to say Aviation 101! That was cool hearing you in the traffic pattern!
Your own plane, a hanger for the plane, good friend, places to land with great food, and a pretty decent RUclips channel. Can it get any better?
Negative, sir!
Josh you flew directly over my bay house, that was Matagorta island as a child our family wiukd camp on that very same airfield under the wing of a 180, port O Conner is ine if the best places to go fishing in the world, watching the flight from gulf coast down past the Brazos river, san Bernard, down the coast over the Colorado river I've done many times,
This was the best one I've seen yet, the fist time I landed with my dad at Matagorta was in a 140 at 6mos old im 57 now you need to go and just explore that area lots of ww2 history
Fky safe
Wow that’s cool
I'll spell check once my tears dry, but lots of memories on that bay and on that Island,
I’m literally flying down to runway cafe on Friday lol
My friend and I landed on a beach just outside Oceanside, Cal. (c. 1967) I think I was 18 and Pat was 21. Aircraft was a C-150. We were based out of Riverside, Cal. Funny now. I'll keep it short. On the landing, the airplane encountered the 4" deep water, lots of spray, (5 feet in the air) and you didn't need brakes, but the landing was "not too bad overall".We had a nice visit at the beach and when it came time to effect a takeoff...trouble.You'd wait until the water receded, and "go for it", but before you could get to takeoff speed, the next wave would present itself. With 2 of us in the C-150, you might get to 40 MPH and hit that shallow, 4" water and lose all speed. As the waves would wash up and result in shallow water in the pathway, like say 4 inches deep, you couldn't avoid the shallow water because if you went away from the water, you'd wind up in the soft sand, so you had to try to "time it". Good luck. After maybe 2 failed attempts, we altered the plan.Pat weighed about 135 and I weighed about 185, so guess who had to "hike out".It all turned out OK, but DO take into account that you might have a challenge getting back out because of the shallow water, and by ALL MEANS, know the tides. You don't want it to get worse as the time passes.Anyway- I watched from the beach as Pat attempted the takeoff (flaps 10), he'd get up to about 40 MPH and the next wave would kill off his speed. He made it (barely) on I think the third attempt. We had prearranged that I would hitchhike back to Oceanside airport and meet there. It all worked out.The guy that gave me a ride was so taken by my story that he drove me all the way to the airport, where we found Pat washing the aircraft before bring it back to the aeroclub. =PC=
Got a kick out of this. My grandpa is a pilot in Santa Paula and hearing his stories always made me want to become a pilot. Hope to fulfill that one day soon!
VERY legal. I get frowns all the time if you can imagine! 🤪
Good show.
Another great video Josh! Really cool seeing Austin that far out with the sunset.
love the 172...nice flying..nice handling..very forgiving. faithful airplane.
Brain disconnect button. So accurate!
Thank you for modeling responsible airmanship.
Josh, since you enjoy "eating out destinations" may I suggest the Picket House in Woodville. We have a very nice airport and the food is delicious. The main course is always fried chicken served family style. I'll pick you up at the airport free of charge (lol) and lunch is on me.
Man, I absolutely love your videos. The photography is just amazing and the editing is superb. I'm working on getting my PPL right now and I have learned so much from your videos. With that, you inspire me to keep pushing forwards to get my license and that the struggle is there but what comes after will be amazing. Thank you for what you do, your amazing.
Nice to listen to you fellas just "talk". Felt like we were there with you.
Just a quick idea, would Love to see a segment on " Take your controller for a flight day"! We been listening to these guys guide you all these years, would Love to meet them! Like I said, just an idea!!!
That’s an awesome idea! Seconded!!
Great idea!!!
FlightChops did that a while back, and it contained a lot of great insight if you want to check it out.
Agree. I know the controllers get paid for their 'job', a little appreciation is sometimes worth more than money. steve
310 Pilot did that like 2 months ago and for one thing, he looked nothing like he sounded but the video had a lot of insight into their world.
Try JFK Class Bravo
At or below 500’ along the shore line.
I appreciate your professionalism in the cockpit. I'm striving for that and see that it needs to be more common.
One additional concern is pilots are requested to maintain 2000’ over wildlife/wilderness areas, which are charted in numerous areas down the coast. Great job guys!
Good job explaining the low altitude flying clearances/requirements....
We need to get down that way and check it out one day!
And of course check out some good Texas BBQ! :-)
James S
Absolutely.....
You know us.....
It’s all about the food!!!!
I wish to soon get my PPL and be able to fly like you! Keep up the great work
Private pilot here but you should spend some time with my dad for a day...spends every day about 30 feet off the ground in an AT-803 (ag plane) in NE Louisiana. 11,500 hours and still going. Best pilot I know
I can not get enough of Aviation101..The journeys just get better and better!
That was wild looking at Austin that far away! Cool video! Thanks for the share. You always make it look as fun as it is. And the sound track is great!
Another great video, Josh. Once again, as a student pilot I appreciate your explanation for why you're doing what you do and your heart for teaching really shows. Thanks!
Gear up? Love it.
Yes...I've done it during my flight training near Groton, CT, USA. Well, we flew a little lower than expected during our engine out training. My instructor pulled the throttle back and we got down to about 1000 feet over the beach. Well, when I had the beach made, my instructor put the power back in and nothing. A little carb heat later, and we were climbing back up. Nothing like training an emergency which almost led to a real emergency.
When I did my first solo from Doylestown (DYL) to Lancaster (LNS) and back. I was able to see Downtown Philadelphia which where I live in, and Heritage airport (PTW) on the returning leg to Doylestown. It was one of my favorite scenic flight in 2019, now preparing for a father and son flight in a few days :)
Hey I'm right near you. I fly at PGC. Doylestown and Pennridge would be among our first emergency alternates. Can usually see Philadelphia and on a really clear day you can see NY.
Good flight and as always very educational.
I fly in Colorado so have more than 25 miles visibility is usually the case, when you spoke of it being clear I was thinking it was hazy just a difference of what your accustomed to I suppose.
Really appreciate your discussion on ditching the plane in the shallow surf vs risking people on the beach. My priorities are people on the ground, passengers, me (PIC), all property.
Sweet landing
When I used to live in Corpus Christi we liked to fly up to Pierce field which used to be an old military training base. and just down the island further to towards Port Aransas there was another abandoned Military training base. Can't think now of the name. We used to land there after a storm and go beach combing near there. You could find the best shells and in tact huge Sand Dollars. Years ago there was a Cessna that ran out of fuel and didn't quite make the airport for an emergency landing. You could see the top of the wing just below the surface about 50 yards from shore. I don't think that is there anymore as that was 45 years ago. Either someone fished it out or else it just went to pieces in the salt water. If you want great breach combing where no people have already picked over the goodies, that is the place to go.
Turn auto generated captions on and look at time 3:14, maybe a few seconds earlier. The voice recognition is pretty funny! Now I'm just reading the captions, looking for more unique interpretations of what you are saying! Great videos, thanks!
Great work, Josh!
I really enjoy your videos with the diffrent camera angles. I get to see places i never would otherwise.
A few years ago I was on the beach north of chicago.A young man buzzed the crowded beach He was low enough to see his smiling face.Unfortunately for him a coastguard helicopter was in hot pursuit.
Unfortunately
I’ve been to that exact cafe last November!! I flew my grandparents over there from pearland regional airport that evening for some dinner. My mom drove there with my little sister so once we finished eating my mom flew back with me while my grandparents drove back with my little sister. Overall, the trip was amazing. Keep up the good work man I hope I can meet you one day!!
Great flight video guys! It's been a long time since my friends and I flew to that part of the Texas coast.Always fun watching your adventures.Happy flying!
thanks for tips of low flying
Loved the take off brief, exactly that. But I listened and understood - all I needed
Man... that was a blast from the past. Once you got to East Matagorda Bay from there all the way to POC, Indianola, Sea Drift, Long Mott that was my stomping grounds. When my kids were little we fished up and down the coast. I still go down there to photograph "stuff" when I'm home. There a little restaurant on the water down in Indianola that's decent but no place to land an aircraft or park it. I'm surprised that you didn't circle Matagorda Island lighthouse. It wasn't too far south of where you flew.
Nice Flight! Thanks!
Love the Austin view. When I took off from Sonoma Skypark, 0Q9, off runway 26, I could look to my left and see some of the San Francisco skyline some 60 miles away on a clear day. Amazing...Thanks for the video Josh!
For just a second their I thought I was hearing Greg in N390GM. Positive rate, gear up, yaw damp on... Great video as always Josh!
Looks like fun Josh. Thanks for sharing your day.
As a beach fisherman, I thank you for your courtesy. So sad that, in today's world, it is a increasingly rare commodity.
Loved it Josh! Keep it up
Going below 500ft you will lose separation from drones at 400ft, in Australia it's not uncommon to see a drone taking insta snaps, looking for schools of fish or whales
I'd be more worried about birds than drones in almost every scenario
Drones be like ewww let’s video the plane!!!!😂
Drones are required to be in eyesight of operator so shouldn’t be an issue. Let’s not over-regulate the fun and beauty out of flying 👌
Around The World Again 🙄 type of person that would bubble wrap kids so they don’t scrape a knee.
“See and avoid” & Distance regs. It’s covered. Let ppl have fun and experience flying.
CRF_NO_50 lol people don’t always buy drones to fly line of sight. I am an Rc plane pilot and our planes are being considered drones. The drones are killing our hobby because of the idiots that don’t follow the rules. Our hobby may die if this continues down the wrong path with drones.
"Brain disconnect button". Absolutely loved it! Not sure if you've been consciously working on your fry, but your videos are so much more enjoyable now, keep'em coming, cheers!
I've done a couple of beach runs just like that! Some of the best flying you can do is low and slow! I love it man!
Thanks for this. One of my fav memories from when I was flying was a clear Sunday afternoon flight down the South Carolina coast from an airport that no longer exists on Isle of Palms, near Charleston, to Hilton Head (HHI). One of those beautiful days and memories.
I’ve never seen your channel before but am I glad your channel showed up in my recommendations. I have lived in the area in between Matagorda and Lake Jackson . The town where they where building the bridge is Sargent where I used to hang out all the time.
great flight. well done as always.
Absolutely legal. On a not about landing on sand, pick the wet sand not the dry sand. Wet sand and your little tires are likely to be adequate, end up in the dry sand and even 35” bushwheels might not save you. :-)
agreed, and the wet sand is relatively smooth. i'd say you're probably better off on the wet sand even if one gear is skimming the water.. the AC is toast no matter what you do...
gottafly30 I wouldn’t necessarily say the aircraft is toast for landing on a beech... hehe so long as you land on wet sand. Speaking from experience.... ;-p
By the way. If you would’ve continued down past that abandoned strip, you would’ve found the huge Matagorda island base. It’s another abandoned base and it’s amazingly big
Cool video loved it
Nice video, Beautiful views
Americas favorite CFI !!! great video as always!
Josh, Your love of aviation is totally awesome! I have caught the bug, and cannot wait to get my ticket and start going to obscure places and meeting other aviators. Your tips and tricks are greatly appreciated and as usual, I love your videos. Please keep up the fantastic work! I can't wait for a JoshKosh meetup somewhere!
I like your frequent sensible references to safety.
I may have to pilot train soon :-)
Great Josh! I thought Austin was cool with the sun reflecting off the class buildings. That Number 8 neutral density filter really helps to eliminate the strobe effect of the prop in your pictures!
Nice shot of the new bridge going up in Sargent. Damn I miss that place.
Used to live about 4 miles from Lake Jackson airport. Flew the Dow shuttle out of there a few times. Great place!!!
Love your vids man! You're up there with Stevo, FlightChops, etc. Keep it up
Beautiful flight! I believe there was an inversion layer which can magnify distant objects like those in Austin. Very cool when it happens!
Looks like a great time - good food / good weather. Enjoyed the video. Take care be safe.
MAN I LOVE THESE VIDEOS :)
7:30 "But they don't identify as a person" hahahahaha
Pierce Field on Matagorda Peninsula, is where you turned inland. I have landed there many times as I am a property owner there. I would also land next to the South Jetties on a shell road until some one built a cabin on the Bay Side. People land on the ramp, or there is also a runway 13/31 not marked
I thought we’re talking really low
Nathan Prince not that low
Dragging the tires on the water low.
You need to realize that it's not easy to fly low.
Yea! Low enough to fill there water canteen's!
Another amazing video. Cherokee 80991...oh wait .. LOL
Yo, that Angle of Attack cap!!!!
Josh your awesome man, always great stuff and this is no exception.
Yeah, flying low along the beach is fun. I'm on the Florida coast and flying along the beach is great.
On landing... "gears down"
Yea down and welded that way
It's on the checklist, and should never be glossed over even when you "know" it's a non-issue. Sloppiness begins by "logical" skipping of steps. Josh also flies other planes, so it is NOT guaranteed that he'll have welded-in-place landing gear.
I fly a 177FG and and a 177RG often on the same day so I always call/check gear down on both
StrokeMahEgo no, we weld it approximately 2.71321 seconds before landing. You should know your checklists, and get current!!!
@@coltongerth8444 now I'm just imagining a guy hanging on welding some wheels right before landing
Aviation101, I'm going to take my first flying lesson this weekend I haven't followed your videos as advice, yet I hope to be up in the air and I'm also getting a Cennsa 172 so cool.
Circosta Gaming - discovery flights are always fun, and you can do it no matter what you’re age is! I did mine at 7. It’s all about getting a good instructor who you have synergy with, learning quickly, and keeping the “bug”/“dream” alive!
Another great video, really nice landing too..!!
I randomly clicked on this video, but a month ago I literally had lunch at TGC, flew out of Lake Jackson and then up to Brenham then down along the coast. Wow I was surprised to see all of that in this video.
Positive rate, gear up? In a Skyhawk? Neat trick.
I've done almost that exact profile to fly over that area! We went IFR into LBX, it was clear there so we took back off VFR and went to the coast to fly low.
I can't tell you how cool that is to almost see some of my visual memories shot for shot in a well made video.
Positive rate gear up, lol he's ready for retrac's
That was amazing the way the reflected of the buildings 👌
Amazing video the beach and the sky looks great!
All us rotorheads like “That’s low?” 🚁
3:00 “positive rate, gear up” 😃👍🏻
Josh, you should go fly a banner tow... gives new meaning to low along the beach... nice vid
That’s so awesome. I can’t wait to be able to start flying. Thanks for a great video first thing in the morning.
Which app was Miles using on his phone? Android or Apple?
You'll never see the guy flying opposing direction, won't even feel the impact.
Joe yup. Flying right into the sun and the reflection off the water. Not good ADM.
One of my favorite FAR/AIM reg’s... “Rotorcraft Exempt”. 🚁
Nice job...
Great video, as usual. Always wonder who thumbs down your videos.
Awesome video!
So cool Josh. TY for taking us along!
Like it. Always enjoy your videos. Sorry but I also still have your videos stored in a folder called ‘Mr Aviation’. Hold habits die hard or something like that...
Beautiful flight. I also really like the post flight debrief Your flight reminds me of when I was learning to fly we would do similar flights along the coast of Lake Michigan (30+ years ago)
That is a sweet hat.
Josh, I really love your video's
I always wanted toget my pilot license. But to bussy parting and not following my want. I have had stick time on a P3 Orion. I have had stick time on a CT 123 Fairchild. I have had stick time on a Cessena 150. Even on a SSN696 Navel vessel. I watch your video's and live the all. Thanks.
Your already a legend in Texas Josh! Another great video.
As long as it was over “open water” as defined by the FAA navigational charts, then yes. You would be surprised how they define open water, though. Don’t be sure,
Amazing scenery. I'd love to do that, but part 91 in New Zealand does not allow for the condition over water or remote areas. It's just 500ft AGL unless take-off, landing or there is some bona fide reason.
love flying..love seafood..you lucky dogs!!!
