I find that oxidation is the most critical reason to ruin the scent. You can try to make a small decant and put it in a cool place, still goes bad sooner or later (it happened to many of mine). Also, the cap is just to protect the atomizer from physical damage. If it is not airtight, the liquid will start to leak as soon as you flip the bottle.
Very true it happens with decants a lot! ideally if the bottle is nice and airtight it won’t be a huge issue, but i agree that oxidation is probably the only real way that a fragrance can be ruined or changed!

My Boss Bottled EDT spoiled in exact 5 years. Considering an EDT lasted more than at least 4.5 years (lets say I didn't notice it until it hit the 5th exact year), I guess it can mean that EDP perfumes can last at least 5 years also.
Just for reference, I have some fragrances that are close to or over 30 years old. Just because I wasn’t a huge cologne user for most of my life. Not only are they not expiring, their overall composition is remaining largely the same as first day. This includes an original Dolce and Gabana Pour Homme (the Italy edition) and the more obscure but no less pleasant Elizabeth Arden’s Intuition for Men. I was gifted a friend’s CK One a few years back and that has definitely expired. Possibly due to being so delicate and citrus-heavy. But D and G is similar and hasn’t degraded. One difference between the two: D and G was always stored in its box, away from light. So maybe don’t throw your boxes out.

Stop spreading misinformation. I have had 2 fragrances become bad in 3 years. - Dior Sauvage & Acqua Di gio profondo. My only mistake - Carrying them in my bag to office - Which caused them to shake in the bag. Over time they became bad - The scent profile literally smells broken. A lot of the notes of the smell are just not there. Some notes in my ADG profondo even smell oily now. Sharing this only to help others save and make the best of their fragrances. Don't shake your perfume bottles and don't keep saving them for years. Use them fast and enjoy them, you never know when they'll just die.
This is wrong. Aromachemical fragrances are much more prone to expire sooner. All fragrances right now are aromachemical, oilos are not as used currently, so, most likely, they will indeed expire much sooner than expected, whether stored properly or not.
I see what you are saying about using less oils, but still you need to define what you mean when you say expire, if you’re talking about chemical reactions that take place that can ruin a fragrance, then keep in mind that a chemical reaction requires time and energy, heat, UV, and many other things will give more energy and decrease the time in which the reactions take place, so if stored properly, depending on the formula, these reactions won’t happen for many years, and the fragrance won’t randomly decide to self destruct, thats not how chemistry works. Now if you are talking about the turning or oxidation, then actually lots of oils would be more vulnerable to this. Specific ones like neroli actually turn very fast, although thats not a bad thing all the time. While an aromachemical like Lianool, wouldn’t.
