  • Join me for another sew with me sewing vlog! In this sewing tutorial, I will be vlogging the process of sewing a late summer/ early fall dress! I'm using the "Afghan Nomad Dress" sewing pattern by Folklore Patterns, but I'm hacking it up and using different fabrics and trims for a fun design. Join me to see the entire sewing process, including design inspiration, choosing fabrics and trims, cutting fabric, sewing, and the big reveal!
    Update: A viewer from Afghanistan informed me that this dress would be considered traditional attire throughout Afghanistan, and that the word "nomad" would not apply well to this dress. Thank you for educating me about this style of dress!

    Hi everyone! I hope you enjoy this sewing vlog. Since this pattern is based on traditional Afghan garments, I wanted to pop on here to acknowledge the situation in Afghanistan right now. My heart goes out to all those affected. Hi, I'm actually really shocked as an Afghan to have read your title "Afghan Nomad Dress". For your reference this would be considered our traditional attire throughout Afghanistan. We have a very small population of Nomads (like many countries around the world) and they aren't usually as fancy due to their travels through harsh weather. Perhaps if you change the title, you may avoid upsetting other Afghans as well. Your dress was beautiful by the way, I'm inspired. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi D K, thanks for your information! The pattern I made this from was called the Afghan nomad dress so I used that title, but I appreciate learning more about it! Really interesting to learn that it would be considered traditional throughout Afghanistan. I will certainly change my title to better reflect the true nature of the dress. Thanks for watching my video and sharing this knowledge with me! I love learning about clothing around the world :)

    This dress is sublime. You have a very ‘good eye’ your fabric choices ie colour/ print and lace combinations work perfectly together. The length choice on you is extremely elegant. You could easily wear this to a wedding or special event. I loved this so much I subscribed, im seriously impressed.

    Splendid dress, “definitely exactly my taste” as well! Congratulations on such a beautiful and elaborate piece, you look lovely in it.
    Since you feel that it is too much fabric for summer wear, you might consider taking out some of the gathering on the skirt part to make it lighter? Just a thought.

      Thanks for watching and for the comment! Yes that is a good idea, maybe it could be shortened as well to make it less heavy (it weighs a lot right now!)

    An absolutely wonderful dress! May I ask, you mention a zipper, I don't recall that in the pattern that I just looked over quickly. Where did you insert the zipper?

    • @MadeByMelm
      @MadeByMelm  2 года назад +1

      Hi Linda, thanks for watching! You are right that the pattern doesn't include a zipper. The first time I made the bodice, it was too small for me to slip over my head, so I considered adding a zipper to help me get in and out. In the end I decided against the zipper and instead added width to the bodice through adding panels on either side. This allowed me to get the dress on over my head! Hope this helps!

    • @MadeByMelm
      @MadeByMelm  2 года назад +2

      Hi Malo, thanks for watching! I used the "Folkwear Patterns Afghan Dress" pattern. I cut a size medium but it was too small around my shoulders, so I added extra fabric and it ended up being closer to the pattern's size large. I followed the instructions for the pattern for cutting and sewing. I turned the bodice piece so the slit neckline was in the front rather than in the back, as originally indicated in the pattern. I hope this helps!
