Today we are making a dreamy garden dress! I am using the Rose Cafe Bustier pattern to sew a summer-garden inspired dress! I show you the process of sewing a dress, including designing the dress, choosing fabric, and making the bustier! My design was inspired by designers like Teuta Matoshi, and I will show you my take on a floral garden themed dress. In part 2 we will finish the dress and I will show you the final reveal!

Very nice, how did you learn how to sew? You are very talented.
Very nice coat! I just finished mine and found your tutorial very helpful because as you stated, their photos are ridiculous! I found it very difficult to follow the instructions because they used lining and fabric that were nearly the same dark blue. And I also don’t like the fact that they don’t offer the option to print your one size. The company is outdated in their approach to pattern printing and illustration and I won’t buy from them again until they update their approach. That being said, I do like the coat and I’ll make another. Thank you!
Do you or would you make them to sell? I’ve been looking for something like the sezane gilet for soooo long!
Sorry at this point I am not selling anything :( but if you decide to give this project a go, I am such you could do it :)
The shawl collar looks good on it.
Yes I love that design detail too :)
Beautiful coat. Very well done video.
Thank you! :)
Your cookie cutters actually look like biscuit cutters. The wavy edge goes through bread dough that might be a little sticky. Patterns in the '50s assumed that the wearer would be wearing a girdle; measurements were taken from women in the military service in the 1940's so the proportions don't approximate most women's proportions now. The Style pattern is not a princess seam, but does look very cute. Princess seams go down the front and the back and over to the armholes. They are easy to make fit because there are so many seams you can adjust.
Make sense about the sizing in the 40s and 50s for sure! Thanks again for watching!
I don't know if you're using a ball point needle on your machine when you sew with knits. It is a little easier to prevent runs. Also, most dress fabrics should be sewn with a size 10 or 11 needle. You can use pinking shears to finish seams; they kind of keep fabric from raveling. Simplicity's re-releases kind of make me wish I had kept my patterns from the '70s! Nice job on your fancy dress!
Yes ball point for sure, makes such a big difference! :) I love that simplicity is re-releasing so many patterns from the 70s, it was such a great decade for fashion! Thanks for all your lovely comments! :)
You may have figured this out by now, but when you're working with a plaid fabric, you can trace the plaid lines on the pattern piece when you cut out the front, so the pockets can be cut out at the same point on the plaid. Likewise, you can note where the notch for connecting the sleeve on the front is located on the plaid so the sleeves also match on the same plaid. Anytime it was impossible to match, like a back with a pleat and a back yoke, I would turn the plaid on the bias so the not matching looked deliberate. It's nice to see a young woman getting into sewing!
Ooh that is such a good tip and one that I have never heard before, thanks for sharing! :)
Thanks for this video. Really enjoyed your detailed process and analysis.
So glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching :)
Fantastic well done and thank you for sharing I have this pattern printed out but then too scared to attempt! Just found you in time I have never sewn a lining so many thanks for sharing all the extra tips especially the hemming you are a ⭐️
Aww so glad you found this helpful! I was scared when I started this project too, but it was much easier than I expected :) goodluck!
Love it
Thank you! :)
Really clear sew along. Darling sweater.
Thank you so much! :)
I love everything you make! You have such elegant and bold style and you just know what looks amazing in you.
Aww thank you so much for such a nice comment! :)
I like all the pieces! I’ve been extensively looking into sewing I’m so interested in learning and I found your tutorials very easy to follow. Any advice for a beginner like myself?
Ahh so glad you like them! I actually have a whole video on my channel about sewing for beginners - I suggest to start there! Also, there are so many amazing educational channels on youtube for beginners as well. Have fun!
hii, how many meters of fabric needed for a coat of this size ? appreciate ur reply .. thanks alot
Hi there! I believe I needed 3.5 metres of main fabric and a similar amount of lining fabric, and at least a few metres of interfacing as well. It really depends on your body size, and it never hurts to buy extra in case you make a mistake. Happy sewing!
Thank you for tutorial ,very easy to follow and understand
So glad you found it helpful :)
I really like your coat! The fabric is beautiful! I am struggling with hemming McCalls 8438. The hem is driving me crazy. I think , like you I will hem the lining separately. I really need to take a class on lining. thank you for sharing.
I need a class on lining too! I would agree, save yourself the headache and hem separately or hand-sew the hem in :) Goodluck!
I am interested in the pattern for the dress that You are wearing while You showed the summer collection here
Thank you! It is the Friday Pattern Company Wilder Gown pattern - I did shorten the length of the layers in the dress :)
I was wondering why we hadn't heard from you for a while. You've really stepped up the complexity of the patterns you've chosen with this beautiful dress. Even when I was at my peak sewing level, I wouldn't have had the courage to make this pattern with these fabric choices. I'm impressed with your taking on this project and not rushing it. You will look fantastic in it. You choose the right colours and patterns for your body and complexion.
Thanks for your comment! Honestly I just find it so hard to balance youtub with my life right now, but it is something I love and want to keep doing :) Thank you for such a nice compliment! I enjoy the challenge of a long, tough project :)
Brilliant tutorial and top tips. Going to make this in Boucle. Thank you
Thank you, so glad you found this helpful :) Have fun!
Thanks for sharing. I'm about to make this. I love the sleeves, but it looks so cute sleeveless.
Goodluck with you project! I like the sleeves too, but I actually feel like sleeveless would be maybe easier to wear? Goodluck! :)
You can also use spray starch to stabilize the fabric. Washes out after and just leaves your fabric.
Oooh that is such an amazing tip, thank you!
Hi friends! I really hope you enjoyed today's video, I can't wait to show you the final dress in part 2! I also linked some resources for fitting cups in the description box - these tutorials really helped me achieve the best possible fit! 😊😊
So amazing hearing you talk about the adjustments x I had tried this pattern about a year ago. I really wanted to use the bodice for my maternity photoshoot but after 4 mock ups I didn’t know how to fix the gaping on the cups. I couldn’t find any info that was helpful so I ended up giving up on the project - I was sooo disappointed 😞 Hearing you talk about the adjustments you made makes me want to revisit the pattern 😊 All this to say thanks for sharing. Am sure a lot of people who have had issues with the pattern will find this video very useful x
I am so glad you found this helpful! I also struggled a lot with the cups, I was feeling pretty defeated and ready to give up. Your comment reminded me that I had meant to link the videos/resources I used in the description box and I forgot - I linked a few REALLY helpful videos that I used, I highly suggest you check them out because they helped me so much! 😊
Amazing! Your dress will be so gorgeous.
Thank you! Can't wait to show you part two 😊
That looks so good. Can't wait for the part 2. ❤
Me too! Thanks for watching!
Excellent, thank you. Like you, no patience for toiles unless really need to!
So true! Thanks for watching!
You did such a great job, the vest is Beautiful.
So glad you liked it, thanks!
I love the dress you’re wearing. Is it me made as well? If so, what is the name of the pattern?
Thank you so much! Yes, I made it! The pattern is The Wilder Gown by Friday Pattern Co. I actually have a video about making it, from two years ago if you scroll back on my channel :)
@@MadeByMelm Thank you so much! I’ll check it out.
No matter how many times i stare at the sleeve gusset, i just can't figure out how it works 😅
Ah gussets can be confusing! The pointier part goes near the underarm, if that helps!
@@MadeByMelm That helps a lot! Sleeves are always scary for me to sew XD
I love everything you made! It feels like a pretty impressive quantity to me but I know that it varies from person to person. You've great pattern/fabric matching instincts!
Thanks Cassie! I guess sometimes I plan too much and I'm disappointed when I don't sew as much as I expected, but that's life and I am definitely my worst critic!
So many fun makes! My favourite is the floral sweater, I've made something similar last year as well. It's so comfy!!
Thank you so much! Yes, aren't these sweaters just the best for practical everyday wear? I'm glad you have one you love too!
Gorgeous makes as always! 💖💖💖
Thank you so much! 💖
Lovely makes and they 3:21 suit you you beautifully
Thank you very much! 😊
Love the fleece top…looks so cozy!
Thanks, it is so cozy and incredibly warm! 😊
Just discovered your channel a few months ago and thought you had quit but subscribed just in case. Glad you're back.
So glad you stuck around! Hoping to be able to post more regularly this fall! 😊
Lovely assortment of projects! I really appreciated the comments on pattern fit sizing and drafting.
Thank you so much, glad it was helpful for you! 😊
Love the striped dress! I’ve been looking for a pattern just like it after seeing the Billy J Sunny Daze dress. I have the perfect charmeuse fabric in a rust colour for this.
Ooh you will love it, its a beautiful dress! Just don't make my mistake, add the seam allowance! 😆
wow mccalls 8525 looks so stunning
Thank you, I love it! The green fabric is beautiful!
I bet this is way too expensive in Canada 🇨🇦 BC ❤
Fabric is definitely expensive! But so worth it! 😄 Thanks for watching!
@MadeByMelm you bet sweetie 🌹
super excited to see all the work you have been doing! first off, the beach cover-up works really well with the orange accent, i'm sure you got lots of compliments on that one. the green-silk fabric piece looks very challenging to work on, thats a piece I would keep and work out the kinks on, very nice color. I personally love the floral fleece sweater (and personally, I like the longer sleeves) it has a beautiful fit it and I really like the the circular zipper-pull you place on it. nice touch! I honestly was surprised at your criticism on the black and white striped dress, as this was probably my favorite piece you did out of all of them ironically, ha! as for the frocktail dress, it has a very magical feel to it and really think you did an outstanding job on the overall finished piece, there is a lot you could do with that dress in terms of occasional settings. keep it up, love it all <3
Thank you so much for your comment! RUclips tells me you are my #1 commenter, I really appreciate all your support :) I agree that the striped dress is stunning, I think my judgement is clouded by how hard it was to make it since I forgot the seam allowance! 😆 After seeing the green dress in this video, I feel more warmly towards it! The fabric is definitely exceptional (when not wrinkled!) I agree the sweater is easy to wear and the fit is overall great! I can't wait to share more about the frocktails dress soon, just editing my video now! Thanks again for your support! 😊
@@MadeByMelmlove your passion, keep it up 🧤
Thanks Mel, I loved the video and have ordered the pattern and lining as I have the wool mix fabric already to go. Really helpful hints and as I have made a Chanel style jacket prior to this which hand sews the lining in at the sleeves and hem, think that will be a better way to do it as you mentioned bagging out left you not liking the hem finish - which I agree with. I will however, be watching this again as I sew and I loved your coat finish. Thanks.
Thank you so much for watching, I'm glad you liked it! I definitely think hand-sewing the lining is a good way to go! Goodluck on your coat! :)
OMG!! A beautiful queen making our nomad dress , i swear never saw such gorgeous afghan dress so far!!!❤️🔥😍🥰😘
wow thank you so much! I really wanted to do this style of dress justice! Glad you liked it! :)
Love this tutorial! I have this pattern and after watching I can’t wait to start sewing this dress. Thank you. I love how you explain. 👏🏼👌🏻
I'm so glad you liked this, have fun with your dress! 😊
Okay I just made this and I feel like the size 12 is smaller than the measurements listed, but I agree on lengthening the straps for the bust area the sit lower. I did just get some nicer fabric to hopefully make all needed adjustments on the 2nd round with this pattern!
That is so interesting! I hope you have success with your second version! 😊
