I wouldn’t say most artists/rappers are “broke”, just not as rich as some people might think (I used to think Kanye was a billionaire lol) . These rappers still earn a LOT of money from merch, shows, streaming and their record contracts. Of course, if you are a one hit wonder, and that one hit isn’t 1 billion streams, you’re pretty much done. So moral of the story is: Continue making great music after your first hit; Don’t be a one hit wonder.

i think it’s as simple as streams not counting to much money, isn’t every stream like 0.00001 cent? it’s something like that and one big song won’t get u a living wage or atleast not on its own. Most artists get their money from 2 things, record deals or shows so when the label cuts them off and they can’t headline big festivals they have no income apart from the streamed songs which isn’t a lot. Large artists who have a catalogue are normally fine cus they have enough songs to do shows for years to come which can get them into a business or property wealth but artists with one big song really struggle

True and now with touring going down the drain too artists aren't making as much as they use to be

@@TofuMediaOfficial exactly, like id only go and see a show from my favourite like 4/5 artists maybe after that id see others i like at festivals but i wouldn’t go out my way to see just them if they haven’t got too many songs i like

Many people dont realize that the music industry works on a loan system like the movie industry. So they get money for the album and then pay back the industry next they and the label work on tour the artist probably is using profit for touring then those profits went to the artist and go home.

I believe that if an artist is truly great. They don't any DSP's. They just have to have a good marketing campaign then go direct to consumer. Because if your sht is that good people will seek it out. That's just my opinion.

Devils advocate: Streaming is fine, it's the deal artists/label sign that's fugged. I own my own label, and I'm an artist on my label, and I keep 100% on both sides (composition/sound recording). I'm touching M's, I'm under the radar, I love streaming platforms there's no ceiling and you can operate as hundreds of artist names/aliases and scale fast far and wide.
