Was at a Crowded House concert this evening in Toronto and Neil sat down at a piano and played this song solo. It was beautiful. It was also his birthday today, so we all sang Happy Birthday to him. I hope he felt the love. Such a fantastic concert. Some new songs from their upcoming new album, but a heck of a lot of our favourites from the past.
Casually heard this playing on the store speaker when I walked into a bottle-o recently when I was having 'a day'. Way too young to know this song in the 80s, but man I'm literally addicted to this song now - just love those coral synths.
Linguistic heavyweight. Every single word conveys some deeper messaging in and of itself. Rare raw talent there. It made me appreciate the English language so much more growing up. As it isn't my native tongue.
I woke up every morning to this playing on my dormitory loudspeaker at St Pats in Silverstream. 53 now, 3 kids of my own. This takes me back to when I was just a little boy.
I was young when this song aired - 2023- now I'm just an old "69" year old pothead enjoying all theses RUclips classic songs that get posted here in the RUclips world
I was living in Tulsa OK in 1981 when MTV first hit the airwaves. They were my favorite band after I heard "I Got You" the first time. A year or two later, this video came on, and I thought, "how is every song they sing better than the one before". I love these guys, and I am so thankful to have been introduced to them at a young influential age.
Amazing song, I discovered it much later than most (2019) but even as a 16 year old surrounded by everything being released then this commanded my attention the most, and even today it never gets or has gotten old. Everything about this song is a stroke of the Finns' genius. Those faint, high synth notes at the very end among the piano and swirling effects give me chills.
I was a big fan of Split Enz quirky songs but when this song arrived it was something special, first sign that Neil was capable of genius, I got to see their Enz with a bang tour in Perth, I thought that was that, Crowded House was a real surprise, those first 4 albums are masterpieces.
There are also still quite a few of us here in the States who've followed them appreciatingly through the last... OMG, has it really been 40 years??? No wonder they now look like children in the Split Enz videos... those same videos I used to drool over them in once upon a time! But seriously (not that I'm not serious about what I just mentioned...), SplitEnz, Crowded House, Neil's stint with Fleetwood Mac, and the Finn Brothers,' as a group as well as solo, are easily some of the most talented and long-staying artists on this planet, and are deserving of the utmost love and respect! (It doesn't hurt that they haven't lost their looks yet, either ;-) )
What a phenomenal song, singer, band...everything. We saw Crowded House last night in Boston and Neil played this solo at the keyboards. I mean, does it get any better than that? Feeling all the feels, times ten!!!!
Had a double cassette in 1984-5 with this song on it. From memory, there was also "Rain" by Dragon on this compilation (there you go NZ! Aussies do acknowledge you!). Message to My Girl is still by far and away my favourite; on many different levels. I miss the '80's.
Literal literal poetic genius... heavily underrated linguistic mastery...using his words as much as the notes of music to give feeling... it's..... hush
Shame they are so underated (in most countries). Split Enz are so good. 22 turning 23 next year and Enz are my fav band. Here's to hoping more people will become fans instead of listening to overproduced and mumbled junk.

Seriously. The number of fantasy songs Neil has pumped out is phenomenal. It was funny he ended up in Fleetwood Mac. He wasn't a great fit. Indeed i think he is actually better than Fleetwood Mac.
Have to agree. His songwriting took Split Enz to a whole new level. Maybe he joined Mac in sympathy; he is so much better than a band that had one decent album😄
I'm an Aussie... he is one of the greatest Kiwi's ever.
Hauntingly beautiful to listen to this 80s gem during this beautiful May evening!
Soss loby

Neil is everywhere lately, he was playing with Fleetwood Mac too!
Except they played their last show in 2009. Tim never played in CH
So talented, him and his brother.
@@zapkvrhe did, toured U.K. with them and sang vocals on a couple of the recordings, late 80’s early 90’s.
Tim was all over the Crowded House Woodface album and co-wrote many of the hits off that album.
Oh there's nothing quite as real
As the touch of your sweet hand.
This line kills me every time

Another of the most beautiful love songs ever composed by these
brothers. Hip to be detached and precious. Brilliant
I think this song is one of the finest pop love songs ever recorded. The words are beautiful ❤

It's in my top 5 list for sure.
It brings tears to my eyes every time as well.
I think you’d be right.

I'm 54. You'd have been a year behind me. Father Walls ruling the joint. Place has changed physically so much since.
The sound of Te Awamutu has a truly sacred ring.........
A perfect song. I feel so lucky as an Aussie kid to have grown up in NZ in the 70's and 80's and have been exposed to this kind of music
I feel so lucky as a Dutchie kid to have grown up in the 80’s and 90’s and also have been exposed to this kind of music 😅
Strangely it did far better in Australia than New Zealand.
Me too
You poor soul 🇦🇺🇦🇺👍🏻👍🏻
Took a trip to Australia and north island NZ.with husband and 14 yr old daughter IN 1983 and heard these guys for the first time. I loooove this song.
This is a magical song to hear over and over to deal with heartbreak.
What a good band! underrated as fuck
I agree
Wonderful. Brings back so many great memories. But that's what music is all about. Take care everyone...

to the untold lost that missed growing up in the 80's...
This will go down as one of Split Enz greatest songs

Awwww......Neil & Tim little harmonise at the end, NZ Classic
The magic of Neil's music. It resonates with me to this day.

My favourite line of all time.

What can you say....Split Enz and the Finn brothers have a huge long time following in Australia. So respected, so brilliant

Yeah great AUS talents bro !
This song is full of atmospheric power - especially towards the climax at the end !!!!
Over and over again ❤

Paul Mc Cartney said Neil Finn was a better songwriter than him.
Wow, high praise.@@kelbatt7729
A perfect love song. Neil is a genius
Can we appreciate the compositional brilliance that this bunch of NZs gave us?
I think it sounds fresher than many of Crowded Houses songs! Split Enz is New for me!
Oh, I got to see them in Canada and we LOVED them! Never wanted them to leave the stage! Xx
In my opinion the best Kiwi band. Wish I had the pleasure seeing these guys in concert.
As a kiwi always sing as loud as possible as his concerts so proud!❤
This song still sings to my soul 💞
Mine too
Beautiful isn't it 😊 I play it on the piano
@@germanshepherdlover2613 Nice! 🎹🥰

The greatest all-time cultural export from New Zealand.
Well, don't discount Flight of the Conchords. And the NZ All-Blacks.
I have always loved this song and this video, the walk through a chaotic scenery store... beautifully lit
Perfection. Beautiful melody, lyrics, vocals, instrumentals. And a beautiful original video too.
This song spoke to me once upon a time - beautiful x
Saw the restored 16mm version of this at a music video festival in Newcastle recently, looked absolutely stunning. Can't wait til it gets uploaded!
The last song I heard in NZ when visiting was this tune on my flight. This will alway be my theme for being in NZ. Good times.
such a great song and super charming video
Hope he sings it on tour this Spring in Boston🌠🙏
The endz of an era and a beginning of a new one. I love this transistion from Split Enz to Crowded House.
Oooohhhh this beautiful song.
This was the final Split Enz album. Crowded house was after this. For Christ's sake
These guy should be in the hall of fame
One of my favourite songs ever
My favourite song of all time
Yes it sure brings back great memories ❤❤❤
…it’s more than that!! ❤️❤️❤️
God! That's an old pic of Melbourne!
Long time ago now and I still couldn’t love it more!
Such a good song ❤️ Powerful lyrics and melody ❤️ The piano sounds fantastic. Dreamlike ❤️
I was genuinely upset when it was the end of the endz when i was a child😂
Neil looks so young. Top band, one of my favourites 😊
no more empty self possession true lyrics accompanying the beautiful music

BRILLIANT... ‘nuff sed.. 👍
Would have been a great song in a movie
I'm 55 and American and I'd had a massive crush on Neil Finn since 1980. Brilliant.
I'm a Kiwi, I'll let Neil know.
Yeah. I remember those days. Days when we were free...🙁
His shirt has been around 😉
RIP Paul ❤
marvelous
Wonderful song.
Love it

The only song Paul Macartney wish he wrote.
They'll be weighing up all the comparables won't they?
I think he's cute
I was totally in love with him when I was a teen
why does Neil Finn look older here than he did in Crowded House
:)

Please fix the audio in this video, it's rough as an old nun's nobbler.
New Wave music probably the best of the best of the best ever made!! Thank to British Bands, greetings from PERU!!!!

There NZ get your facts right
This is real music, not the crap that is produced these days.
I agree, so glad I love this group. 22 turning 23 next year and this is my kinda music.
