Just a thought on the pond: If you're hoping to use it for swimming, having a pasture drain into it may introduce bacteria and other things you don't want to be swimming in, while a well would provide fresh clean water that constantly replenishes. However, as others have mentioned, you may continue to struggle with holding water if the leaks aren't fixed.

Well he won't have to worry about that. Won't ever be swimming looks like.

TJ you may have to just have to pump it out and pack the sides better, just do a complete do over. Might be best in the long run.

I live in northeastern N.Y.S. and know people who fenced-in their pond area, and let pig's run around in the area. They did a great job of sealing the pond and had no leakage. I have seen a couple of these ponds a year or so after the pig's and they are as clear as can be. The deepest part of one was 16 feet and you could see the bottom perfectly! Just a suggestion for you to ponder. Good luck 🤞 👍

The stream you made will fill your pond with soil and nutrients from the whole area. Use rocks to stop sediment. Gabion style might work. Vetiver grass along the whole earthwork will also work wonders. The pond shore should be 45 degrees, now it's too steep. Rent a dozer and a compactor

Regarding the pond: you already mentioned clay and packing. You might be able to put a plastic liner in. Some of the folks here in East TN have done that on leaky ponds and they mostly sealed back up. People here have also put in cat litter type clay (don't know actual name of the stuff) because it expands, clumps, and seals when it gets wet - though I don't know how you would be able to get it into the steep banks.
Regarding the well: may have to go deeper and wider. Sounds like you have water at shallow depths. But even though we have a pretty decent creek running through our field (15' wide x 2' deep avg), when I dug a pit near it to pump water from it, the pit would tap out and needed more water to seep in before I could pump more. A larger pit would create a larger reservoir and took longer to tap out, but it still wasn't enough. So I ended up having to try to pump directly from the creek (then we had a flood and the pump broke 😂🤣😂). It's a "maybe next year" project to get a pump going again.

We have a well and it was 13k for us. In south Tx. We also had to go 574’ down to hit the water table too.

Goats will keep the briars down. Unfortunately, we were never able to keep goats in any fence we had. We have about 1 mile of fence and they would jump over any spot where they saw something interesting on the other side.

I used to operate dozers and one main thing is clay bottom. Rent a dozer and get it done. Push your dirt until you hit clay. You just playing with your backhoe.

Put a fence around it, put some hogs in it, in no time, it will hold water.
    No need for a well.

That pond will never hold water properly until you actually pack it properly. Channel would have 100k subs by now if it was finished with some fish in it. Worth the investment IMO.
