Zuko’s first words for Lu Ten was a Prince praising another Prince.
His second choice of words was a boy praising his cousin who he admired
Yeah, shows us a little bit about their relationship, something we didn't see in the original series.
I think ozai secretly wanted lu ten dead because it'll allow his heirs to rule and ozai is irohs childhood rival to the throne.

Say what you want about the series, but Zuko's actor was a class act here. His voice broke when he said "It gave me strength." And his breaths were quivering.

Q1 - Why is 'Leaves from the vine' sadder than Aang's discovery of the air nomads' fate, according to a 2022Jun poll? (In-universe reasons only.) They don't even use the g word to describe what happened to the air nomads. Cowards.

'Leaves from the vines' is about a war criminal crying over another war criminal. How's it sad BEFORE Iroh fully defects?
But even after Iroh defects, I don't see how it's sadder than Aang's reaction to air nomads. Or maybe the writing was bad because it's a kids' show which doesn't really dwell much on the g word. Idk.

I didn't realize it my first time watching but after rewatching this scene and paying key attention to the background music, I realized that and I bawled like a baby
If you pay attention, it also plays whenever Iroh and Zuko have a soft moment... I recognized it for sure at the end, when they flee from the northern water tribe
Best relationship in NATLA. The father without a son, and a son without a father.
nicely put
I like how they addressed that Zuko actually had a good relationship with his cousin. I would've loved to have seen that, given what his relationship with his sister is like.
I agree but Lu-ten’s face is of the original voice actor for General Iroh casting someone else would not be an option they even keep the original cartoon photo of Lu-ten which was actually a photo of General Iroh’s Voice actor Mako
Zuko made it sound as if he saw Lu Ten as a big brother.
I'd have loved if Lu-Ten gave Superman vibes. Like a really powerful Firebender, but a good guy. So he'd be able to keep up with Azula but he'd stop to help up Zuko.
Which made the show better.
Ozai and the others only saw Lu Tens death as an honour and Irohs choice to save others as cowardly. But Zuko saw that Lu Tens life was greater than any legend or victory. That is why Iroh would do anything for him.
Exactly.
I wonder if it's even deeper than that. It's something Iroh said to Aang while they were imprisoned together in Omashu. He says that it is him that owes Zuko everything. I think maybe Iroh had given up on life at this point, completely broken after his son's death. I think probably Zuko's words is what changed him, and what eventually lead him to see the real strength of the Fire nation in him, namely passion and love. Something changed in Iroh after Lu Ten's death in the original series, having Iroh go from Crown prince leading the siege of Ba Sing Se, to detesting what the Fire nation did in the war. I believe those aspects of Iroh's story might be something the live action could benefit from touching upon, and it would be nice it was connected to Iroh and Zuko's relationship.
I think you're right. When Lu Ten died Iroh almost lost the will to live, but Zuko's kindness and compassion helped show him that life was still worth living. He felt he owed Zuko for showing him that all was not lost. He still had reasons to live and he realized the war had to end.@@Paal2005
I mean,in upcoming comic we will learn how he abondend the sige, without pulling his army out of the city...
It's not just that Iroh misses his son, but Zuko misses his cousin who was like the big brother he never had. Iroh was the father Ozai wasn't...and Lu Ten was the sibling that Azula wasn't.
Youre right
Very true, Lu Ten looked out for Zuko when things were tough and Iroh is what a real father should be, a loving and wise man
There's plenty to criticize in this series. Overall it's pretty decent, but the Zuko and Iroh plot did the animated show so much justice and added so much more. This scene, the 41st Division reveal... well done, well done.
The 41st division reveal was such, SUCH an excellent addition. Whoever came up with that is a fuckin genius.
It underlines Zuko's frustration with his crew, because a part of him is frustrated that he is banished over his consideration for them.
But it also makes the crew fiercely loyal to Zuko once they find out, and I sincerely hope they keep the 41st division going forward somehow.
Lieutenant Jee has some good storytelling potential as a character.
@@perrycarters3113Iroh mentioned Jee at the end of the season, and considering the buildup they gave him for the reveal, I doubt they’ll get rid of him out of the blue like in the animated version.
The end of season 2 is gonna hit hard. The live action has done a great job to establish the father-son relationship between Iroh and Zuko mich earlier thenthe animated series did.
Exactly. The 41st, this scene, and the scene right before this one - Iroh and the Earth kingdom guard. That one felt so real
I hope they somehow join the fight in the end. Ik they don’t fit in per se, but maybe we can see them somewhere in the background or maybe they help the gang in some way.
I think I understand why this version of Iroh almost seems to put on a show like he's always laid back and happy instead of actually just being that way. He's really just hurt inside and the only thing filling the void of his lost son is Zuko.
I love the subtle detail that there are four chairs total, three of them meant for Zuko, Azula and Ozai.. and yet Zuko is the only one that sits by his uncle.
I love the part when zuko sits besides him and uncle iroh lifts his head a little ❤
Same! It made me tear bend!!!

The acting is so subtle, yet so heart-wrenchingly beautiful here.
Ozais monologue felt more like a formality and mentions his worth for the fire nation. Zuko was the only one who genuinely cared for Iroh and Lu Ten. And Iroh also is the only one who genuinely cares for Zuko.
I also used to have a uncle like that, i also sustained a serious injury when i was young, and when my uncle saw that i could tell he had to fight back the tears. And throughout my childhood i would be there for him too. I still have dreams of him, the last time he asked me to go on a journey with him, but those are just dreams.

They made it better. I didn’t expect that:
You can tell Zuko was too kindhearted to say such traditional things about dying with honor. He had to do it cuz he was a prince. It was an obligation.
You can tell he started off by acting like a bold prince, but because he’s such a kind child at heart, everything else he said after that sounded like it was scripted. He’s trying to still be the prince, but he can’t bring himself to act like one.
He’s just a kid. A good kid.
I love how much this scene conveys. Iroh's quiet grief, Zuko's shyness in the days before his banishment, and the beginning of a new found family. They really rescued each other beginning with this moment. 🥹 Such a beautiful scene.
The part that brought me to tears wasn't the music or Zuko's speech. It was just Iroh struggling to keep his composure when he is trying not to break down in tears.
I’m literally a massive waterfall rn.The soundtrack playing subtly in the background is killing me
What i like from this series they keep chemistry between zuko and uncle. It always make me cry

@@UncleTom854-bm5lv I've never seen avatar fans so divided on a series before
@@UncleTom854-bm5lv I'm a true fan and I liked it. Like many others. Saying it's an abomination is so extreme it makes any point you wanna make void.
Oh look, ive become a tearbender.
*leaves from the vine melody playing*
*everyone liked that*
More like everyone cried to that
This is why I'm giving this series a chance. This scene would ordinarily be skipped in the original but they chose to add it in the live action. This take on Iroh's grief was too deep to be in the kid's show. I'm glad they explored it more.
I know this show had its weak points, but it's scenes like this that the live action gets to truly shine. I'm a solid fan of the original but this hit me in some ways the original never did.
The show would benefit from having more episodes. The writing and screenplay is good enough with few flaws but it just feels rushed. 3 more episodes going forward and i feel they will do justice to this story
But they showed Iroh grieving in the show?
I think so because the actor wanted it. He love being Iroh.
As someone who didn't really like the netflix show... I have to say this was probably my favorite addition made and I actually regard it as great. It's already cool to see Iroh and Ozai's relationship fleshed out but there's so much conveyed in this scene without being too in your face about it.
Ozai speaks in empty clichés. Basically that he was a great warrior and we'll remember him that way. Then Zuko, no doubt trying to be like his father as a method of appeasement, begins by talking the same way. But then he makes a literal turn and goes a different way. He decides to speak genuinely. To convey how much his cousin meant to HIM. He doesn't just acknowledge Iroh's grief, he shares in it. Then he breaks what I assume is custom and decides to sit and stay with his uncle, refusing to leave him alone in this time the same Iroh refused to leave him in banishment. Add in leaves from the vine and I genuinely teared up watching it. Great scene in a not-so-great show.
"Happy birthday, my son."
I wish I could had help you 😢

I love this scene. Everyone only comforter Iroh by telling him his son was a soldier and that's how he will be remembering. But Zuko told Iroh how smart and kind Lu Ten is, saying he was more than a soldier but a person.
Then when Zuko sat down next to Iroh and stayed with him I broke down crying!!!
To me Zuko is Irohs son. Their bond is so strong!
Iroh decided to adopt Zuko.
I have watched this scenes dozens of times now… everytime I cry. What a beautiful understanding of the bond between Iroh and Zuko.
Leaves from the vine playing in the background was a beautiful tribute to Mako and his role in the animated series. Makes me cry every time i hear it
Scenes like this one are a huge part of the reason why I loved this first season. It wasn't always perfect, but moments like this are.
Honestly, this scene alone makes this series worth existing. It’s such a masterful way of demonstrating the trait Zuko possesses that sets him apart from his father and sister, being his compassion. Everybody’s congratulating Iroh for his son’s “honorable” death in service of his nation, and while Zuko initially does the same, he realizes the pain his uncle in and begins to reflect on Lu Ten’s legacy not as a soldier, but as a person. It’s a simple gesture that lets Iroh know that he isn’t an alone in his grief-and the instrumental rendition of Leaves on the Vine is just the icing on the cake. Genuinely a perfect scene.
I feel like this scene really connects with the animation's episode tales from ba sing se where uncle Iroh helps random citizens and he sings leaves from the vine. Maybe in this moment he realised that he can honor the memory of his son by helping others like his son helped with Zuko. And I also think that in this moment he saw the brotherly love they shared and that Zuko looked up to Lu Tan as a older brother and that he would need step up as a parent of sorts.
This single moment made the entire live action series worth it. Absolutely amazing
Tried not to cry again.
Cried again.
I said this in another video -- but as someone who has experienced loss, the only thing the reaches you in the immediate aftermath is when people tell you specifically a memory, and what that person meant to you. And then quietly sitting with you in your grief. This scene is absolutely a beautiful example of how to comfort someone who is grieving.
I usually dont tear up that much, but this scene hit me pretty hard
This scene was to exemplify Zuko"s compassionate nature as well as Iroh's grief. Amazing job by the cast.
Zuko's character development is so good. This scene shows just how good he actually is, he's always been my favorite character. Love the leaves from the vine instrumental playing in the background.
This scene was sad and emotional and the soundtrack was beautiful
I was holding it together but then they went and used Leaves From the Vines and I just absolutely lost it. I have a lot to say about this show but the Zuko and Iroh relationship was even better than the cartoon, and I don't say that lightly!
This scene broke me. It wasn't necessary, but it made me appreciate this show so much.
Im glad they didn't depict Iroh actually singing the song. It upholds the tradition of keeping that song as Mako's song (OG Iroh voice actor who died of cancer during the production of Season 2) However people who haven't seen the show wont understand the emotion of hearing those notes.
I guess we will see him singing it later in the story but i will be fine they just show him preparing the alter for his son while we hear the instrumental. Irrespective we all gonna tearbend.
"Thank you, Ozai."
Ozai...Not "brother". Goes to show Iroh's state of mind after this and seeing how his brother, declares his death as if it is an honour. Kudos to actors all around.
Iroh in both the cartoon and the live action series was never the same after his son Lu Ten was killed in action in the 600 Day Siege of Ba Sing Se.
Listen the Netflix series isn’t perfect but this is a dang good scene they added, the show definitely has some moments that hit
@@UncleTom854-bm5lv If it was exactly like the animated show you'd still find a way to criticise it. Whilst it isn't perfect and probably didn't need to be made at least accept the few good moments that they did decide to add
@@tomelkins4881I live by the rule of "if you want something as good as the original, then watch the original." This was a nice touch for the live action. An extra flashback that we didn't see in the original series. Lu Ten's funeral was an emotional one that showed us what kind of man Iroh is. I also like how we actually saw some interaction between Iroh and Ozai, something we never saw in the original. This also helps explain why Iroh thinks of Zuko as his own.
I’m shocked that we don’t see much between Iroh and Ozai.
Iron and zukos relationship is my favorite thing about the series😭
This actually had be bawling. I forgot how sad Avatar actually is. 😭😭
Show is amazing. Scene broke me
This scene is already very well made, the acting is great, but the music choice is the thing that really makes it such a powerful scene. The creators could've used any old sad song, but they didn't, and it's so much better for it
god, netflix cooked with the whole fire nation scene
As much as I despise the Fire Nation, like LITERALLY, hating the Fire Nation, the story of how Lu Ten died and how much grief Uncle Iroh went through literally broke my heart.
I love how uncle Iroh did everything possible not to cry in this scene:
This was one of the best added scenes in the show. Granted only on episode 4 but i legit teared up when zuko stayed with him while "leaves" started playing.
The cast are completely solid on this show
The writers did something right these characters at least. Best scene out of the whole live action so far.
God, this scene was so wholesome. They not just give Lu Ten's death a little more meaning in this live action, but the fact that they show Zuko's compasion to his uncle in his dark moments while the music plays the song that Iroh sing in Lu Ten's birthday from the animation was very special!
Man I love these small details and references. I'm loving this adaptation so far. Doest have to be better than the animation version, but it's really good! And most importantly, better than the old live action movie XD
Well, can't deny I bursted into tears once more from this scene, especially with the even sadder version of Leaves from the Vine playing in the background.
I remember how this episode was horrible, extremely rushed, a lot of things happening at the same time, but, I have good memories from this episode, this scene and the last scene where zuko says "I don't need a babysitter" and iroh says "And a friend?" make me cry every time that I see it.
This scene broke me. Very beautifully portrayed. This scene also makes my heart break for Zuko because he was so innocent. He only wanted his father’s approval and lost himself trying to get it. Zuko really was a character to feel for. I’m glad I didn’t listen to the haters to not watch this series/adaption. It was great.
I was never angry at you,
i was sad because i was afraid you lost your way.
@UncleTom854-bm5lvWhat the heck are you even talking about? "That's why"? What is "that"? This is one of the best scenes of the show, and it isn't even in the cartoon. It even plays Leaves from the Vine in the background. You want respect for the characters? Here it was.
@UncleTom854-bm5lv
Dude. You do realize that 'Tales from Ba-Sing-Se' is from Season 2? It's yet to come and especially this funeral-scene gives even more debth and backround to this part of the story.
@UncleTom854-bm5lv
Yeah, and in my opinion it doesn't need to be 1:1. I didn't like some things either, but scenes like this funeral f.e. aren't a addition in the sense of changing something. Lu Tens funeral happened, in the original series just on screen.
1:1 wouldn't work cartoon -> live action. We already have the brilliant og series.
If you just want to close your eyes over the fact, that the Netflix-series has some enjoyable moments and tributes to the original the loss is on you. It's def not perfect by any means, but it also has its good parts.
I absolutely did not survive it! The very first note took me out. I was 9 years old when this premiered and lost my dad the same year. Absolutely heartbreakingly beautiful
The cartoon series made me cry as a young teen and this scene made me bawl as a grown man in his mid 30s. Iroh is the man we should all strive to be.
While the show as a whole is not great and has many, MANY problems that make it very bad compared to the animated series, this scene is actually really good, and it made me cry the first time I watched it. So, credit where credit is due.
My eyes are doing tearbending 😭
You know a scene is good when I headcanon it to be something from the animated series we never saw. This is so in line for both their characters I'm shocked we never saw it before the LA version
Was unsure about this adaptation when I first started watching but after watching this scene as well as the other flashbacks, It’s reeled me back in absolutely phenomenal
The actor who played Zuko is totally perfect and natural. He did it effortlessly and made uncle Iroh to unofficially adopt him.
When I recognised Leaves from the Vine, I started bawling my eyes out like a child.
Dallas made Paul becoming a true uncle Iroh. This is a testament of great acting,
I am not the biggest fan of live action adaptation for anything but this....absolutely hit diffrently mainly because it does a shine and polish on the animated versions bond Zuko and Iroh had even when iroh is being spoken down to he understands but sees past zukos pain as he did with his instead of seeing him as a coward
I really love how they added that Lu Ten was an older brother figure to Zuko.
Maybe one of the only instances of the live action actually improving on the series. We never actually see Ozai and Iroh interact once in the original show, and Zuko looking up to Lu Ten just makes his relationship with Iroh that much stronger. I wish the rest of the show was this thought out
I just like to imagine Lu Ten stumbling upon a stressful and unhappy Zuko, asking him what was troubling him. Zuko at first seemed distant, wanting to be alone, opened up about his studies and Ozai being the jerk he was. Lu Ten then tells him about his medal and how it became a charm ever since. then he gives it to Zuko, who seemed confused and didn’t accepted it, saying it belongs to Lu Ten. Lu Ten insisted as he also said “it should belong to someone destined to do great things”. Zuko holds back his tears and then hugs his cousin, thanking him for talking to him.
Someone mentioned this in another video, but there's 3 empty chairs, for Ozai, Zuko, and Azula. Zuko was the only one who stayed and used the chair next to Iroh.
More tears now 😭
Literally the first note of the song broke me, shiiit, when Zuko broke the royal protocol damn.
Yeah this scene makes me a wreck every time. With leave a from the vine playing in the background 😢
One of my favorite scenes from the remake just beautiful 😊 I loved how they did Zuko and Irohs relationship
I do wish there was a way they could've concealed Ozai's face like they did in the show. Made him more powerful feeling.
Just for this scene alone, the netflix version gained its place in my heart.
Okay, while I never watched the Netflix's Avatar series and my awareness of its problems, this scene right here has got to be the best I have ever seen so far.
Lu Ten didn't have any screen time but he is already my favorite character in the show.
Is it perfect? No; but did it make me cry? Yes 😭
Bro cmon man not leaves from the vine playing in the background 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

I love scenes like this for showing us the two sides of Zuko early on. The loyal Prince of the Fire Nation, and the good person underneath.
Gods, we are going to be a MESS when the Crossroads of Destiny comes out....
Rest in peace Mako Iwamatsu
Iroh will go on to do great things. He raised Zuko up from the ashes. Became the only family he needed in his dark time. Became a guidepost to his destiny
O Tio Iroh pode ter perdido um filho, mas ele ganhou outro.
Episode 4 is By FAR my favourite.
Mostly because of iroh zuko and bumi.
But i also liked Katara and Sokka's bonding moment. Two simblings who have to face the world Together by making mistakes but also with hope to explore it on a Important mission.
I luv dis it made me so 𝕖𝕞𝕠𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕒𝕝😢❤
The Earth Kingdom see Iroh as a villain but they have no idea on what he had lost during the siege of Ba Sing Se. Ozai didn’t care and showed fake sympathy because he saw Lu Ten’s death as an opportunity to get to the throne and the only who was by Iroh’s side the whole time was Zuko. Which was beyond emotionally and impacted so many of the fans who knew the bond that these two had in the animated series.
The scene broke me the second time I watched it. Can't wait to explore Iroh's scenes in Book 2
The best scene from this series say what you will they did this perfect and I hope the revisit this part of the story if they do the next few seasons
