I would rather live in a socialist country where I can enjoy my time, than live in a capitalist country, work for 10-12 hours a day, and still have no time for things I enjoy. Also most of the stuff in Cuba is provided by the state, so they dont need such high salaries. @@balanced2482 And so does Communism, both China and Russia became industrial superpowers over night, and it let to both the Cubans and the Vietnamese to bring much bigger powers to their knees.
@@balanced2482 All of them became much worse off after Communism, Cuba went from taking on the US, to cab drivers earning more than doctors. Russia went from the largest, most powerful nation on Earth, in military, land mass and science, to whatever the hell it is now. China is the most Communist one left and they are arguable the most powerful country on Earth. Communism is the dream, but selfish Capitalist always ruin it in the end.
I hope you realise that the Russia is seriously conservative. The Russian Federation isn't "communist", and China isn't either in the sense that financial restrictions and government practices are enforced like they are in Cuba. Having known the USSR it was far from glamour, and the military was only powerful in numbers not capabilities.
It makes sense, despite what conservative media may tell people most liberals are highly against any kind of complete socialism. There's a massive difference between thinking that some elements of the economy such as health care might be better managed publicly and thinking that the state should take over the entire economy. Right-wing commentators just act like there isn't so they can have something to shriek about.
many people can guess but it would've been nice to include that cab drivers are driving tourists, so they have access to foreign money, which is why they're able to make a lot more than cuban domestic economy would allow.
exactly, this seems like it was framed so disingenuously. they brush over the collapse of the soviet unions having a major impact, and they completely ignore how the embargos cause most of these issues.
My parents once went to a wedding in Cuba many years ago. I think it was in the late 90s. I remember they told me how the tourist guides were some of the best paid people in the country and how everyone wanted to be a tour guide. Because the tour guides can get tips on top of from the tourists on top of their fixed salary and the tourists can be very generous. I was very shocked when I heard about this from them as a kid.
The main reason why the taxi drivers earn more than doctors is that they get paid in foreign currency, mainly dollar. The national currency is aligned with the countries economic and social system. But you need foreign currency to trade on the black market.
That's factually incorrect. Cuba has a dual currency system. They have pesos or cup, and "convertible" pesos or cuc. The cuban government pays its people in cup mostly, however in stores it's all basically sold in cuc. Btw 1 cuc=25 cup, almost every video about the cuban economy is made using cuc to simplify things and avoid the confusion that comes with buying and selling 2 kinds of currency at different rates within the country. It's also ok to attribute 1usd to 1cuc since that's sort of, kind of the value of cuba's cuc for this video. PS I'm Cuban, lmk if you want something else clarified
Thanks for opening the world's eyes with respect to Cuba. These series are extremely accurate and to the point making it easy for people that never had to deal with any of this crap, understand why Cuba is not the socialist/communist resort paradise they visit every year.
+Hector Alonso “M031192” This is true. Nowadays, in Venezuela, a lot of people are becoming "bachaqueros" (food traffickers) just to make enough money for a living. They took 800 Kg of cocaine there, with diplomatic passports.
The title should be "Capitalist Cab Drivers Make More Than Commie Doctors". The Cuban government allows taxi services to be ran as private enterprises.

This is so accurate, you did a great job! I visited Cuba 3 years ago and I was so impressed by how people manage to earn money. I was also shocked by the lack of diversity concerning food. It was particularly hard for me because I don't eat pork. My local guide explained the problem to me. He said being a farmer costs too much. They have to ask the government for permission and borrow money from them which is not easy. I hope thing will get better soon. Cubans are so humble, they deserve better. They are fighters and survivors. I wish them a bright future.
I'm Cuban and i thank you so much for making this video. The world needs to see what the Castro Regime has done to its own people. I hope everyone who sees this video can share it and make it go viral. The Cuban government MUST implement human rights and so many other things.

Yeah, and at the same time the expenses are lower, including food, housing, health and education. Good video but it doesn't show any other point of view.
Yup. I'm from there, this is how it works. Step one, gun control. In Cuba it was total confiscation, just as many of our Democrats want. Step two make them dependent, starting with health care. Castrocare & Obamacare aren't that much different at the core. Keeping the people busy trying to get by helps keep them too busy to fight against the government.
I’ve traveled all around Cuba three times. The whole situation is crazy. The people eat using government provided rations, and the doctors make so little. The majority of the economy is made up of privately owned businesses working with tourists. The whole governmental system is extremely flawed.
Not flawed. It's been blockaded by the US for 60 years now. A country would normally be completely destroyed by that; the fact that it's still doing pretty well despite that speaks alot about its stability.
I miss this Vox. They weren't afraid to be critical of a system that strongly opposes capitalism, nor were they afraid to admit that capitalism and private businesses simply _worked_ for Cubans. They've become too politically aligned the past few months.
Vox isn't afraid of a system that strongly opposes capitalism. You are just lying. Being afraid of communism isn't the same as being politically aligned. Stop being biased against Vox.
The other reason the cab drivers make more aside from their salary not being set by the government is that the number of licenses is limited. Even in the United States there are cities with a limited number of licenses that sell for high prices.
Seeing a Lamborghini anywhere is not a sign of progress, but rather a sign of a sick, twisted economic system in which the pleasure of the rich is prioritized over the dignity for the poor.
Would you rather live in a country where a 5% of people have lamborghinis, and the rest are poor, and you are among those poor people, or where everyone is equal?
Nunya Business lol you’re just jealous because you can’t ever afford one, it’s not sick that someone has a high quality car that they wanted and worked for
@@EternalNico1 Its a waste of money. I understand rich people that buy family cars for far less money. But i dont understand those young adults in their 20s whose parents are rich and they just got their drivers license so the first thing they do is buy a lamborghini because they are sick, and want to show everyone how much money they got and then they marry some gold digger and never be happy in their life. No one is jealous here. I would never want a lamborghini. If someone gave it to me for free, the first thing I would do is sell it. I could buy 5 normal and common cars for that money. I just wonder how then Soviet economy managed to survive for so long time and has achieved great success in technology and science? When in university I open textbooks, soviet ones often have superior quality. Though I don't support state-controlled economy and I know people here were poor, this thought can't escape my mind.
+Сергей Некрасов Communist governments poured a lot of money and resources into education and research, so academia and technology were largely unaffected by the damage that communism did to some economies.
+Сергей Некрасов communism also provides a significant boost in productionn ,infrastructure and education. But this boost is only short term, after a whle the economy dwindles which ultimately led to the fall of communism. Lenin's USSR and even Kim Il Sung's North Korea experienced massive boost in infrastructure allowing them to modernise rapidly unprecedented in capatalist nations. But after that boost it all went downhill from there.
your right, the Soviet higher education system was fabulously well funded and Russian state schools are still of an exceptionally high quality, but food production was less impressive, more mundane, and so not as heavily invested in. a well educated person who is starving to death person is less useful to an economy than a well fed idiot. and yes there was the first man in space, but there was also crumbling roads and little emphasis on things like consumer goods. centralized planning might produce wonderful things but such governments often focused on the grand, not the practical. the organic and natural development of an economy with minimal government domination ultimately wins out over one controlled by centralized state planners.
as for why they survived for so long, violent suppression, complex effective propaganda machines, and a state run system of slave camps and re-education centers (gulags) might not save a state from its economically suicidal policies in the long run but it does stave off the inevitable for quite awhile.
+Сергей Некрасов It depends on what you are comparing it to. "When in university I open textbooks, soviet ones often have superior quality." the soviet union collapsed 24 years ago, so if soviet textbooks (at least 24 years old) are superior, i question the quality of your education. Further its about priorities. The USSR prioritized education and research. doctors trained in the soviet era are still often the best doctors for example. What doesnt get talked about is all of the areas that the state didnt value, turned to shit. In a state controlled economy its all about what the government prioritizes. For the record cuban doctors are of decent quality, its just they make 40 dollars a month.
That's the horrible reality of my Homeland. I got a BhD. in foreign languages, I used to teach English and French at the medical University and only got paid 20 dollars per month
That's what we teachers say everyday when we have the same, if not more, education then many engineers and doctors but we make barely a quarter what they make. States like Arizona complain all the time that they never have enough teachers to fill all the positions but they refuse to open the pocket book to pay them
White Wolf engineers start out around the same pay as a teacher now. Only difference is teachers work for the government so they won’t make near as much in the long run.
They're not avoiding it. It simply isn't an issue for them. It's illegal for them to even do the most basic of trades. They're more focused on what's actually causing their issues. They don't have the luxury of beingIndoctrinated because they saw a couple titles of articles
Andrés De La Vega world of Warcraft [̲̅$̲̅(̲̅ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°̲̅)̲̅$̲̅] is worth 16x more then venazlaian cash and is accaully illegally traded there really makes you think dosnt it?
Moppy The government made everyone dependent on government. When the government couldn’t provide what the people want, people couldn’t go to the private to get food cause there was no private sector. That’s why socialism never works.

Also most of the stuff in Cuba is provided by the state, so they dont need such high salaries. A typical left wing American is very conservative compared to Cubas system.
Anti statism is not conservative
It makes sense, despite what conservative media may tell people most liberals are highly against any kind of complete socialism. There's a massive difference between thinking that some elements of the economy such as health care might be better managed publicly and thinking that the state should take over the entire economy. Right-wing commentators just act like there isn't so they can have something to shriek about.

@Lucio Centurión what you think about travelling to Cuba
exactly, this seems like it was framed so disingenuously. they brush over the collapse of the soviet unions having a major impact, and they completely ignore how the embargos cause most of these issues.
At least someone in the comments was smart enough to notice this.
Someone said the Cuban dollar is worth 1 cent *more* than the US dollar

Sure, the purchasing power of the dollar is stonger, but even then, just look at the peso/dollar exchange rate (it isn't that strong to justify such a low wage.)
purchasing power is simply not higher in cuba than it is in the US, in most areas it is lower. You cannot compare Cuba to other 3rd world countries because its an island, there is an embargo, and there is communism. That's why they are forced to have grey area side gigs like in this video
the point is driving a taxi is better choice than being a doctor
It’s kinda funny that we all forget that doctors get more “respectful” money by the patients as they do in al post-USSR countries. No patient goes to the doctor with no money to pay as a way of paying “respect”
This is corruption and it's been fought in most post-USSR countries since its collapse. You won't see this in a lot of European post-soviet states
im from cuba.
my mom and dad were both nurses in cuba and they did not have money to buy anything . they quit there job and started to sell things. we survive with the money my grandfather send us(from the us). allmost everyone from my family are nurses and when we talk to them they tells that everyday is getting worse.
Our Economy is broken. My dad says Cuba doesn't have an economy at all. Thanks for this Video Vox. We appreciate you giving the world an insight on the situation of the people in Cuba.
Ironically a one party system is where you're most likely to see rapid change. Albeit only in the interest of said party.
it depends on whether the change is based on good or bad decisions. Just look at China. One-party system but it works effectively in their favour. They have the entire country under censorship and an iron grip, even with an open economy, they've made it such that only their local businesses get the advantage
I have nostalgia for this video.
Not because I have any connection to Cuba, but just that I saw it suggested again 7 years later
Compare Cuba with Brasil, Argentina, Colombia etc... And then see if it is that bad... The level of poverty and crime in all the south American countries is strongly higher than Cuba... And all this countries has a capitalist economy
Krteloffio the reason why poverty is so low in Cuba is because the government provides housing for every single family in America. Crime is so low because the government gives quite harsh punishments. You can walk around with an open bag or purse and nobody would even think about stealing it.
This is false. Argentina is nowhere near like Cuba in levels of poverty. I know, I’ve been to both and am from one of them!
Crime and poverty isn't because of capitalism. Each individual are responsible of their own behavior.
Capitalism have impact on Wealth and businesses
YouYou HAHA SURE keep thinking that...
@@EstrellaDelSur23 Under Capitalism, each individual is responsible for its own success. Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos got rich thanks to their brain.....being able to devellop something that people will need.
They were able to succeed thanks to US capitalism in China, they won't be able to strive.....because of gouvernement restriction
I really thought you guys were going to go the other way, but you surprised me
kr tu it doesn’t state the amount you need to live in Cuba though because they don’t pay for housing education or healthcare the cost of living is much lower
This is some high quality news Vox is putting out. Keep it up!
That's the horrible reality of my Homeland. I got a BhD. in foreign languages, I used to teach English and French at the medical University and only got paid 20 dollars per month
Ariel-Adrian Infante maybe it's because you have a bachelors degree dummy
DooBick m8 I got paid $15 per hour to serve food to old people and wash dishes in Northern California.
okay so? Did you expect high pay as a server for old people?
Ok but was I talking to you? Did I ask?
It is unfair if a doctor earns less then a cab driver.
That is just proof that the system is wrong
That's what we teachers say everyday when we have the same, if not more, education then many engineers and doctors but we make barely a quarter what they make. States like Arizona complain all the time that they never have enough teachers to fill all the positions but they refuse to open the pocket book to pay them
HeatEnd there wouldn’t be any doctors or engineers to begin with if it wasn’t for teachers 👍🏻
Sol Invictus Teachers have the same education as doctors? Hahaha biggest joke I've ever heard.
White Wolf engineers start out around the same pay as a teacher now. Only difference is teachers work for the government so they won’t make near as much in the long run.
@@fridericusrex9812 who tf do you think teaches doctors?
Wow . Simply mesmerising. Thanks VOX .
went to cuba multiple times
amazing people ❤️
Mum: Be a doctor when you grow up
Me: But I want to be a taxi driver
Mum: You earn no money being a taxi driver
Me: shows this video
God damm right.
25$ from the airport to Havane, m8 you got scammed ahahaht tourists.. 😂
still cheaper than taxis on mainland us
He literally knowns that, he mentions it. Plus I don't think he minds to do that when he knows what Cubans have to go through
he's well aware and it's not like he has other options, what's he gonna do? call an uber?
Exactly, that was his point
i live in a small town in the us and its almost always $15 from here to school.
guess what, here in the UK a junior doctor is earning less than a cab driver as well
But in UK they studied like 5 years to do so.
@@gabrielbaruck9152 they need to remember every street in London .-.
and also cab drivers are self employed and own their own cabs which mean higher risks.
@@gabrielbaruck9152 15 years to correct you.
@@chocolateontoast No, just 5 years in uni till they become a Junior Doctor.
I went to Cuba, stayed in a resort, full of workers that were trained doctors and engineers.
Being Cuban I’m glad this side of Cuba is getting put out there. The only way it’s going to change is if people see what’s wrong with the country
Interesting how they conveniently avoid talking about the embargo..
Yep
Just like how they conveniently avoid talking about the seizure of the foreign-built and funded businesses that caused it.
They're not avoiding it. It simply isn't an issue for them. It's illegal for them to even do the most basic of trades. They're more focused on what's actually causing their issues. They don't have the luxury of beingIndoctrinated because they saw a couple titles of articles
Cuba is allowed to trade with any other country of the world besides the USA how is it the US fault for choosing not to do business with them?
Welcome to Venezuela
Jose tha immagrent i think he means it’s like that in Venezuela too
Andrés De La Vega verga y venezuela aun no ha tocado tanto fondo aun.
Venezuela has a 70% private sector
Andrés De La Vega world of Warcraft [̲̅$̲̅(̲̅ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°̲̅)̲̅$̲̅] is worth 16x more then venazlaian cash and is accaully illegally traded there really makes you think dosnt it?
Moppy
The government made everyone dependent on government. When the government couldn’t provide what the people want, people couldn’t go to the private to get food cause there was no private sector. That’s why socialism never works.
