    I agree with all the commenters who commend you for not including a bunch of fluff and getting right to the point. I hate the videos of people who love to hear themselves talk and and who use stupid exaggerated gestures and corny intros. My time is valuable. Your video was very informative. It made perfect sense. Going to test my tractor starter tomorrow.

    Thanks your video saved my butt getting my Kubota running after a snow storm and I tried several things over a couple hours. Watched this and with a screw driver jumped positive to ignition paddle on solenoid- starter kicked in. Used key for glow plugs and did it again - tractor started right up. This tells me ignition not sending enough volts to starter. BUT I can simply install a momentary push switch to solve the issue. Thanks again

    Hi, where could be a problem, if starter rotates, but pinion doesn't push out? Starter is new. I changed it, because of this problem. It hapenned on my last ride before winter time. When I was running on highway, engine stall suddenly. So I glided to the highway exit and put cas aside and tried to start engine, but it didn't. Only starter was moving. We towed to my garage and there I noticed, that starter didn't move with crankshaft. I tried to change starter relay, but it didn't help.

    Hi, i want to test the solenoid of the starter motor without to dismounting it from the car, can i do this whitout making damage? obviously i disconnect battery from the car before. Thanks. When you are writing that the internal contact of solenoid is bad in the video instead i think it's only the tester probe that doesn't make contact with metal of the bolt, it is covered of dirt.

    Connected the positive cable to the positive battery terminal and then to the ignition part of the starter, then I connected the negative to the body of the starter; when I connected to the negative terminal of the battery it kinda sparked and left a mark on the terminal...and the pinion moved forward and did a slow rotate thing...I'm confused ayy

  • @Davpana

    Good video, but the part where it uses the tester is useless 'cause if the motor starts then by force there is voltage on the positive input of the motor. The right test was to put the + of battery only to the spade connector and with the meter in ohm test between + batt input of motor and + batt output contact to motor stator

    • @simonilett998
      @simonilett998 2 года назад +2

      By rights if the solenoid contacts were bad the motor obviously wouldn't spin, but there is much less load on the motor when it's not trying to turn an engine, so not a conclusive test.
      Also, your ohms test method is also not the best way to test the solenoid, as without the main battery cable connected and motor not running, there is no current draw accross the solenoid contacts, so you could well see a good ohms test even if the intetnal terminals weren't making a good connection to carry the high current the motor needs.
      The best test would be a volt drop test across the solenoid terminals, with the motor running.
      Set volt meter to 20volt setting and place the (+) Test probe on the battery feed terminal, and (-) Test probe on the motor feed terminal, then trigger the motor to run via the start terminal.
      You want to see as low a voltage reading as possible across the 2 terminals (preferably less than 1 volt, or better would be in the milli-volts range) with the motor running/circuit loaded for the most conclusive test.
      This then proves very little voltage drop/loss across the internal contacts of the solenoid👍

  • @farerse
    @farerse 6 лет назад +1

    can the issue also be that it spins but does not move forward ?

    • @TomsTenorHorn
      @TomsTenorHorn 6 лет назад

      Hi Farerse ... not really possible unless you have the heavy wire from your battery or alternator connected to the wrong terminal on your starter ... it acts as a relay switch ... when the solenoid is energised via the ignition it pulls a piston inwards (pivoting the gear forward) and a circuit is made within the solenoid housing allowing the current to flow from the heavy wire on the solenoid case across to the other heavy wire that feeds the starter motor ... when you release the ignition the solenoid is de-energised and a spring pushes the piston forward breaking the feed to the starter motor and pivots the gear back in.
