These stories are so important to be brought to the public. They make us appreciate all the labour and challenges fisherman are faced with from day to day.
I'm retired from a 30 year career producing documentary television in the US, and I know from experience just how challenging this kind of filmmaking is. Well done!

This was the most incredible "at work" video I have ever seen. I now appreciate what it takes to get seafood to me. This is not for the weak of heart, soul or body. My hats off to the men of the seas!
I left a 30 yr construction background to persu a lifetime dream of fishing the north Pacific . Owned two salmon trollers and fished alone much of time.I was Seldom satisfied unless I was scared to death at least once a day. 12 yrs of that and it was off to the next adventure. Great job fellows.
These men and women are the equivalent of the Alaskan Deadliest Catch crews. Great Britain's hard workers who make fish and chips and more available. There's much respect due to them. They any many others go unseen or taken for granted, yet their hard graft feeds a nation. There's honor in that and them.
oh theirs a nice few boats who do pots like the deadliest catch but we’ll their more like us in canada and doing strings of 60-70 pots all connected to one main haul line

People moan about the cost of fish, when at times it can cost lives that are priceless. I’ve worked at sea as a fisherman and it’s not for the faint hearted and It’s little wonder many are religious.
Life at Sea was phenomenal. Trawlers were built for rough seas and are sturdy vessels. Working at sea requires an understanding of the modalities or the lack of can render that Individual as a weight to the entire effort which cannot be afforded. Everyone must be a part of the team in order to have the success required.
As an ex trawler man, I've had some amazing time's and made friend's for life, the brotherhood is forever is you pull your weight and dig in, I saw plenty come and go who heard of the riches but knew nothing about what it took to get it, I would say my seamanship was second to none (mending, splicing, watches, awareness, hygiene), this Ben guy I think could have stuck it if he actually had to, he comes across as a very determined guy. Very well documented here.
My first trip to sea january 1968 ..58 men dead ..three trawlers turned turtle due to black ice ..still went back for more ...brilliant life .. loved it !!!

Was on trawlers out of Granton in the late 60s for 18 months. Tough life and very dangerous. My last 13 day trip was up around Iceland, we were caught in a storm for 2 days. I genuinely thought we were all going down with the boat. It was like a cork in a maelstrom.
Fishing is a weird one because a fella who’s 35 who wants to fish might do so for a year or so. But those of us who do it for life are born a fisherman and we die it. It’s more than a job or a way of life it’s part of us.
Well done Ben! I was a trawler guy way back late 60s and only managed 2 trips, so you lasted longer than me! Yeah we take the food on our plate/s for granted till you see how it is caught and processed! Gutting fish in such a small cabin with no windows is absolutely stinking, but you never smell it in your fish supper!

I did it for 6 years. Was hard but fun. Folk who are criticizing fishermen for their anti-EU stance have no idea what the real dynamics are and how they have suffered at the hands of both politics and big corps over the years. These guys know all about managing stocks. Their ideal is to have a UK-managed fishery in style of Norway and Iceland. Thats ideal got lost at hands of successive govts, the EU and Big Biz.
@@chrisbea49 - There is still a quota systems in place. Catch quantities and prices are down everywhere YoY, mainly due to changed demand within hospitality sector during the pandemic. EU 27 fleet have seen even bigger fall in values than UK during covid and lock down. EU Science Hub has published a JCR technical report detailing the decline effect on the country by country fleets. Brexit was small fry (!) by comparison.

I come from Sweden and whenever I see people go fishing on the North Sea all I can think about is “why do people attempt to bring their small little fishing vessels into one of if not the roughest ocean on earth?” that being said, I absolutely respect anyone who does this as a job. hey as a kid who grew up fishing and in a fishing community all the smells and off puts were just normal to me and for me to go offshroe and follow my family’s heritage for even just a few years means a whole lot… sleep goes like this, sleep all you want on the steam out, then ur working 14-18 hours normal day if nothing goes too wrong, 20-24+ hours if things go wrong ur on deck till the hauls done and just to get 2-4 hours sleep and repeat, this goes till she’s full or trip limit 6-8 days normally

As a child, growing up in England, I often saw old movies of fisherman working the seas, wearing their wool sweaters, and puffing on their pipes. These were men’s men, and I always imagined myself among them being tough as nails. In reality, I wouldn’t last 2-mins on board. Ah well, it’s still nice to know such heroes exist.

I've always had tremendous respect for professional trawlermen, even more so after watching this. Horribly dangerous job, and incredibly tough. Takes a special breed of man to go out day after day doing this for a living! Shame that the British Government don't do more to support the British Fishermen!

I've even worked there as crab fisherman, sometimes we had bad weather or a lot of hard work depends how much we caught, but where there is no crabs, it was an easy job, because I worked not only on deck, but even in sorting deck, where I sorted crab claws and legs). Well job is difficult, but I like it 😊

Fishermen are at sea while we sleep,as are the crews of crabbers,oil rig supply boats,tankermen,ferries and even the crews of cruise liners and containerboats.
When you are out there in a a bit of a sea, just look at the fulmars sitting on the water at ease like little tiny model boats in seas that cause concern to men in ships. Be it the strength of the waves or the apparent frailty of the little birds, nature at sea amazes me.
No , that was before people stopped worshipping Saturn/Poseidon Now these waters specially North sea is cursed , or may be it just isnt blessed anymore But look at Indian seas , people still worship their gods and the sea is tame like a Domestic Wolf (for the most part)

Can catch all you like, matters little if you can't sell it. Seafood exports in 2021 will be down 200 million sterling at least.

They have gutting machines for the bigger fish, the smaller fish are usually gutted by hand.

Fishermen are at sea while we sleep,as are the crews of crabbers,oil rig supply boats,tankermen,ferries and even the crews of cruise liners and containerboats.

When you are out there in a a bit of a sea, just look at the fulmars sitting on the water at ease like little tiny model boats in seas that cause concern to men in ships.
Be it the strength of the waves or the apparent frailty of the little birds, nature at sea amazes me.
No , that was before people stopped worshipping Saturn/Poseidon
Now these waters
specially North sea is cursed , or may be it just isnt blessed anymore
But look at Indian seas , people still worship their gods and the sea is tame like a Domestic Wolf
