Fitting the Shad 58 Top Box to the Gold Wing

  • The panniers on a Goldwing look enormous, but they are a fraction of the size on a GS or RT. A top-box is essential for any touring. You can of course buy the Goldwing TOUR model with the 'armchair' pillion for ulitimate comfort (often embarrassment for the pillion I discover). The 58tr expandable SHAD topbox and fitting kit is a far cheaper solution. Big enough for two full face helmets and some clothing. Here is how to fit to your Goldwing, little tricky, be patient!

    I was fussing with my Shad SM48 in the same fashion on my BMW RT. I found a step drill bit the best way to drill the plastic. Neat as a pin. Almost butchered it with a conventional bit but stopped myself and waited for the step bit to come from Amazon to finish that last 016mm hole from 6-10MM starters. Got the steel plate sorted and ready to fit the plastic chassis now and came in to watch you first! Well done!

      Hi Steve, I went to an engineering show a couple of months after I fitted the SHAD and noticed a step drill on one of the stands. Bought it with the thought that I wish I had it when I fitted the topbox. Your mind quicker than mine...well done!

      I just put on the SN48 as well, and I have to say the Shad stuff has to be the easiest of anything I have ever attached to my bike including the backrest. I also use a metric step drill bit for plastics. There is nothing better. I will say to anyone doing this, it is really important to confirm the placement of those holes before you drill. Don't drill anything until you are absolutely certain not only of its overall place, but that your bit is actually at the center of the hole. Being a little off would be bad. An 18mm hole moves a lot with a very slight movement of its center.
      *I would also note that when you screw the plastic cover back to the top fitting, there are two plastic tabs the need to go into place first before you fit it down, then put in the four tiny screws. This gentleman missed that.

    Thanks norm. This was incredibly helpful. I receive my shad sh58x in two weeks with 23 goldwing bagger mounting plate. I'll prep the plastic plates with holes before it arrives

    Thank you for sharing how to install this top box. Now I don't feel too intimidated to try to install one myself. The video is very helpful, thank you.

      So pleased it helped you🤩. The hardest part is drilling the plastic Goldwing covers, or you could just store them to click back if you sold your bike🤔. You will not really see the ‘holes’ under the frame🧐

      Hi Quandale, Pleased it can help. The hardest part is drilling your existing plastic covers...or you could not do that (even though SHAD say drill them) and just store them to insert back if ever needed. Do not think water will get in?

    The plastuc covers are not to be drilled. They're removed and stored as they are, to be put back on the motorcycle when you decide to remove the plate, and the top box, permanently. They're not to be drilled and put back, and fit the spacers through them.

      @1zanglang - So glad that I read your post about not drilling the covers (even though the directions say to). I removed the covers, put them in a safe place, and continued with the installation - SO EASY! When the plate and/or the trunk is mounted, you never see the missing covers. I figured that if I sell the GW at a later date, and if I decide to keep the Shad, the new owner gets a stock tail piece with the covers in place.

    Great video Norm
    Question, how's does the cross member in the bike handles the additional weight loading?
    I have the Honda's optional rear carrier rack and the weight limit is an absolute joke of 3kg
    Cheers

      Really not sure? The Shad Topbox has a passenger back rest as an optional extra. It would be worth asking Shad their opinion. It is such a good product for the Goldwing. I have now added the GIVI luggage rack as the panniers do not have that much capacity😃

    Did the pre marked holes on plastic inserts line up when drilled?

    • @normski3091
      @normski3091  Год назад +1

      Not the ones in the Honda ‘caps’ which was very frustrating. That is why I had to find a method of marking exactly where the bolts would be and drill at that position, which did work.

    does the metal black plate that is attached to the bike is included with the case or you have to buy it separately? the plastic plate you have to buy, right?

    • @normski3091
      @normski3091  9 месяцев назад

      Hi John, the metal fitting plate is bought separately. I ordered the Shad 58 with its own ‘plastic’ mounting plate, but at the time there was no metal Goldwing mounting bracket available anywhere. Eventually I found one on the Internet in Italy which came in a few days thank goodness. Sure that shortage has been sorted now😵‍💫
