This song single-handedly changed the face of music when it came out. It was more than a vibe, it was a whole culture.
Also, this song is responsible for killing off an entire era of music of '80s hair bands and paving the way to the Grunge era. It's a very important song in music history and "Nevermind" is one of the greatest albums of all time.

The album version has a longer solo. Be advised Kurt was cryptic with lyrics and they were an afterthought to him, the drummer said they often rehearsed with no singing and they didn’t hear the vocal or melody until the studio recording, and Kurt admitted he wrote them going into the booth at times. The drummer btw went on to lead the popular band Foo Fighters.

When I was a Junior in high school, a friend brought this album in. After class he found a tape deck, popped it in, and pressed play. When that opening guitar riff came out, it was like a veil was lifted from my eyes and a new world of a different, ass-kicking, thoughtful genre of music lay before me. There was life before Nirvana, and life after Nirvana. Less then 3 years later Kurt was gone by his own hand. I remember the moment I found that out too in my college dorm room. I've never stopped listening to all their stuff. It will live forever thanks to people like you still discovering it today. Thanks Stacy!

I was a young teenager when this song came out, it really captures the emotions of teenage angst as well as the attitude of being a teenager ('whatever, nevermind'). That's why the title is so fitting, while the lyrics unapologetically announce the band and what they're about to the world. This song also made Grunge mainstream, the whole Seattle scene of Grunge bands exploded together with Nirvana leading the way and Pearl Jam and Soundgarden right behind.
The perfect introduction song to this amazing band, I hope you check out lots more from them. Their Unplugged live set on MTV is a must at some point.

Kurt's girlfriend (Tobi Vail) and her friend were in a supermarket and saw a spray deodorant called "Teen Spirit". They were joking around about "what does teen spirit smell like?". Tobi wrote "Kurt smells like teen spirit" on the wall in his apartment. Kurt wrote this song after they broke up. He said he wanted to write the "ultimate pop song" about teen rebellion and indifference. He's actually mocking revolutionary ideals and talking about how hard it is to be a teen and the anxiety and fear they experience in things like losing their virginity. The lyrics are intentionally cryptic so the listener can interpret it the way they want. They mean whatever you want them to.

The solo is longer on the album version. It's been shortened for the radio and MTV edit.
This song, and the complete album were unexpected success. Brutal and universal. Of course, Nirvana was one of the possible futures, but not more than Mudhoney. They were even not the band everyone was talking about. We were all reading interviews of Sonic Youth, listened to the Pixies and REM. Dire Straits and UB40 were the bestselling bands.
And one day, on the radio, Teen Spirit... A shock. We listened again. And again. And again. And we loved it. Then came Lithium, and Stay Away. It was talking to us. It was us. Cobain was shouting all he had inside him. And we understood him. Or we thought we did. The rest is History.

In Seattle back in the late 80's we used to go clubbing and hear such great bands as Sound Garden, Nirvana, Mother Love Bone, Alice n Chains and so many more. We thought that 1 or 2 of these bands would make it big and would bet on which one we thought had the best chance. The lead singer of Mother Love bone, Andy Wood died and so the band went out and got Eddie Vedder to lead and changed the band name to Pearl Jam. What other town ever had 4 such unbelievable lead singers like my home town of Seattle did. Those really were great times.

Grunge according to Mudhoney, "You sing about dogs, you sing about being sick, you know five chords but you don't play more then three in any one song." This song actually got a lot of crap from people in the scene due to the similarities to Mudhoney's "Touch Me I'm Sick." Right place, right time, right sound. It changed everything in both pop and rock. As a Gen X'r this is what we point to as the moment when we kind of collectively decided we just watched our futures get sold out from under us, so let's just watch the whole thing burn to the ground.

Kurt Cobain (The lead singer) was a Legend to rock world . When he was a teenager , his uncle asked him if he wanted a Bike , or a Guitar , And he picked guitar . Everyday after school he would do nothing but practice . The kid who was going in school . Krist Novoselic , was weird as well as Kurt was , and he asked Krist to form a band , and Nirvana was born . The went tru more than 3 drummers , but at the end they picked Dave Grohl . The relased their first studio album "Bleach" and everyone liked it . He got kicked out of his house after his pare ts were devorced . And song " Something in the way" is a song that describes his lifestyle at the time , he slept under bridges , at friends front porches , couches , sofas ... They soon relased "Nevermind" which took over the world fast , They sould 30 milion copies i think . The storry of song "Smells Like teen spirit " is funny , Kurt and his friends were out drinking , whit spray paint of course . And his friend painted "Kurt smells like teen spirit " which is a deotoraint . Kurt soon found Kourtney Love , and after some time , they wrestled . And they had a baby . Francis Bean Cobain . Their last studio album is "In outero " . Kurt had soo much respect for women , he stoped SA so many times , never Se*ually insulted women , He was Left handed , He had Adhd , Sadly he suffered from drug addiction and deppresion , and he commited suicide by Shotgun , On April 5 1994 . Which was the end of Nirvana . He was a Legend . 1967-1994🕊️♥️

It was a song off Bleach, might have been Floyd the Barber or Blew, can't remember, but that led us to go see them play at Jabberjaw tiny little all ages coffee house in a shitty part of LA. and that was our first time hearing Smells Like Teen Spirit. Our world changed in that very moment.

Gawd, this brings back a lot of memories of my time in Seattle in the 90's. Whenever a reactor chooses grunge music, I get a flood of memories of the concerts and parties I was a part of back in those days. Granted, some of those memories are a bit foggy (not just by time) but it does my heart good to remember them. Nirvana was just a local band when I was first exposed to them and certainly didn't expect their rise to fame. I love your reaction, Stacey! Now, more than 30 years later, I am so pleased to see younger folks find this music and enjoy it as much as I did. Thank you for giving this old grizzled fossil a bit of joy! Blessings!

Stacy, many grunge bands considered the great NEIL YOUNG to be the "godfather of grunge".
Neil Young began his career in the 1960's and had two halves to his music - an acoustic guitar country rock sound with some tender ballads that he wrote, and a hard rock sound when he played his electric guitar like a force of nature.
By the time grunge began in the 1990's, Neil was a legendary singer / songwriter and an incredible guitarist. Pearl Jam especially revered Neil Young and even was his backing band on his album, "Mirror Ball".
After Nirvana's Kurt Cobain's tragic death, Neil wrote a song about him called "Sleeps with Angels".
Here's the link to Neil Young and his backing band, Crazy Horse taking the stage with his song, "HEY, HEY, MY, MY", which was originally recorded in 1979, long before grunge began.
    It ROCKS.

Grok says - Kurt Cobain mentioned that Nirvana's song **"Smells Like Teen Spirit"** was an attempt to write a song in the style of the Pixies. He admired the Pixies' dynamic shifts between quiet verses and loud choruses, which he emulated in "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

I can tell you Stacey the Grunge Era was some of the best music performed with heart and soul that you could feel. I moved to Chicago's Lincoln Park area near Wrigley Field back in 1990 and could see the transition from heavy Punk Rock and New Wave then to Grunge. We had The Aragon Theater and The Metro as well as small clubs. I saw Eddie Vetter perform a solo show for 15 people a few years before forming Peal Jam you could tell he was special. I wandered into the Metro and saw a New band called Nirvana which was a rough basement club similar to CBGB that fit a hundred people or so. I am telling you Curt Cobain was amazing - he liked meeting people between sets he was a small funny and bit shy totally artisticly wierd. We were there the night the Band Hole played with the Lead Singer Courtney Love. I understand that's where they met and then had that epic Rock and Roll Romance. Did you know Dave Grohl was Nirvana's drummer who went on to form the Foo Fighters which I love. We saw countless others Counting Crows, Third Eye Blind, and Matchbox 20 this was an awesome era. The clubs were so active nobody stayed home and it was a total vibe. As you know the real center of Grunge was Seattle which was just putting out new bands every week - Sound Garden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana and so many. They all used minimal instruments and basic effects pedals to create that signature sound.

That was on October 29, 1990 - about 11 months before the release of Nevermind. Also it is very cool to think that was Dave Grohl's third week in the band!
ALso funny is Kurt had short hair and was wearing an infamous black tee shirt from the All female band L7, with the name of their album "Smell the Magic" on it....which has a gal standing up, and you see a dude under her (back of his head) in her....crotchal region. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I grew up to their songs. They're a way of life to me, not just a band. Memories that are carved for eternity on my life timeline listening to them with friends, with my late girlfriend - God rest her soul - my relatives, on my own, for thousands of times. I used to listen to them when I was a kid in Dubai, purchased their records from a friend of mine who worked for a CD and records store in Dubai, where most of their albums were prohibited because it contained explicit material, getting them for me from abroad, hiding the CDs in other boxes and the original Nirvana box hidden in a bag, lol, it was an adventure. When we first arrived in Egypt in 1998, there was a trend, people would make best hits albums for any band and put it on tape, cassette, my mom bought me one of those on my birthday, I played it for hours on my Walkman, while smoking Marlboro reds, like there was no tomorrow. A friend of mine introduced me more to them and the Foo Fighters, he was one ofy best friends, an Egyptian - American, who sadly died in Syria, went as a freedom fighter to fight off the oppressive regime in Syria. Long story short, one of the best and smartest bands ever, they changed the face of hard rock forever.
