  • In this episode we make a panel and attach model text which is linked to the PANEL NAME parameter. Check out Part 4 to learn about nesting in family editor

    Hi Ariel
Thank you for the tutorials. I am in the process of doing some panels for our office template and this has helped a lot.
I also have a similar problem in that the panel name does not move with when I adjust the height. However, I realised that when you wrote the panel name, you had put in another reference plane with a locked dimension to which the panel name is aligned. There are some stages that you have rushed through that, for those of us who are new to Revit get completely confused and lost. Please may you try to explain some of the nitty gritty stuff coz it seems that is where the difference in getting it right and getting lost lies.
    Thank you.

Unfortunately I'm not at the place where I can re-do a video I made several years ago, but you do have valid feedback about rushing through.
My goal overall was to give framework on how to achieve certain goals, such as aligning with horizontal reference planes, and locking them - and applying those skillsets to all kinds of families. As you play around with these functions, you will begin to get a feel for how you like to build them. There are many ways to build the same family, and each Reviter works differently.
The name is not crucial to building the family, its really an ancillary bonus, so if you can't get it to work, you can leave it out, and it will not adversely affect the functioning of your panel.
Thanks for watching! and I wish you luck.

Probably to late, as you know the answer already, but it looks like she created another ref. plane between Ref level and top of 'gear height', where she locked model text to. then you can for example lock this ref. plane to be in exact dim from top or bottom of panel.

ill play around with it. Would it be possible for you to upload a video on how to nest or create cable tray clearance?

Cable tray is a system family, so it acts differently than discrete families in Revit. You could build a "data device" family and use it as cable tray instead of the built-in cable tray (which acts similarly to duct, conduit & pipe), and nest a clearance zone. However, I think in that particular case I would actually simply make a separate "clearance zone" family (not nested) to use where needed around cable tray. weather or not it is nested, you simply check or uncheck "visible in floorplan" in the visibility settings of Family editor to decide if you want it to show only in elevation or in floorplan and elevation. If you show it in floorplan, it may cover up your actual cable tray, and that would most likely be undesirable.

Not exactly sure on how to do that. But ill play around with your advice. Thanks again

Hi again Ariel, question...all my parameters are set correctly. however, when I load the panel into a new job file, when I adjust the panel height the panel name does not move with it, therefore, leaving the panel name exactly in the same location. What's going on here?

Not entirely sure - Its been quite a while since I made this video. However, since the name is just a visual aid for the designer, I don't think that its placement is very important, as it will not print, so it isn't a crucial piece of the family-building process, so you could skip it altogether. you could try building the 3-D text as a separate family, nesting it, and tying it to a dimension/parameter from the reference level (rather than from the top).
      Good luck!

Hello, why wont the panel name show up on my floor plan, but it will show on the elevations?

    • @arielh5704

To get the Panel name to show up in floorplan, you will need to use a tag that queries the panel name parameter. The panel name in 3D that we do here is intentionally made NOT visible in floorplan - only in elevation. It is vertical 3D lettering, so it wouldn't be readable in floorplan anyway.
      Hope that helps!
