Revit MEP Family editor Part 6: The Final Nest!
Просмотров 4,1 тыс.9 лет назад
In this episode we go over some of the most elusive and important steps of the process. The final nesting of the family allows the "elevation" parameter to work , and we "hook up" or "map" the electrical connector family to paramters. Finally, we split up this family into 2 versions (optional) into a regular panelboard and a distribution panel.
Revit MEP Family editor Part 5: Nesting the zones into the Panel part
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.9 лет назад
In this episode, we take the clearance zone we built in part 2 and nest it into the Panel part we created in part 3. We use 2 instances of the nested clearance zone family, one for the front zone, and one for the top zone. In the next and final episode, we will nest the panel part made in this episode part 5 into a new parent family.

    hi Ariel i created a light but in rectangle shape, i have use share paramenter (L, W, H etc) however when i put in different sizes, like you did for the emergency shown in this video, my 2 and 3 D object move around, it doesnt stay in center. what did i do wrong?

    • @arielh5704
      @arielh5704 2 года назад

      I can't say for certain, but likely the issue is locking it to the center. Use your align tool to align the object (or the symbol, or both) center to the centerline of the template, and then click the padlock. This is if you want it to grow outward from the center. If you want it to only grow in one direction, you would lock it to the left or right side (whichever side you want the anchor to be - the anchor being the opposite side to the direction of growth). Hope this helps.

      Hi Ariel Me again. I have my 2d symbol set to a certain colour, it all look fine when I nest into family however the co,our doesn’t seem to carry over when I load into project; it just black. I have tried whatever I can think of ie create a new line type, Override colour in VG. Nothing work. Do you know why

    • @arielh5704
      @arielh5704 2 года назад

      @@sreychhoeun3356 Is your 2D symbol a detail item or a generic annotation? depending on which type you made, you'll want to use the appropriate category in VG. Also check your manage tab in the 3D family to see what your settings are for that subcategory (for example, you can have a line type "lighting symbols" that is a subcategory for "generic annotations"). hope that helps - or at least gives you some words to google ;-)

    Once I added the emergency parameter and loaded them to the project, all the fixtures of that family are now automatically on emergency. Its such a pain in the b to go back and deselect each fixture individually. How do I make sure the fixtures are not on emergency by default?

    • @arielh5704
      @arielh5704 2 года назад

      There is a way to prevent this, but not really a way to fix once the damage is done. For your next project, when in family editor, make sure the emergency box is unchecked as the default setting prior to saving and loading. I hope this helps.

    this video is really helpful!! i was digging the internet and youtube to find a video that would help me to create a nested 2d symbol to the electrical family that will be shown only on the floor view when required(coarse/medium), specifically for the electrical contractors purposes. I mean not the actual equipment but only the symbol, keeping all the BIM parameters, and 3d model inside. do you know where can i find something like this? I'd be extremely grateful.

    • @arielh5704

      That is something that is code required for all buildings - egress lighting. The designation is there to show the contractors which lights are on the egress lighting system.

    Hi Ariel Thank you for the tutorials. I am in the process of doing some panels for our office template and this has helped a lot. I also have a similar problem in that the panel name does not move with when I adjust the height. However, I realised that when you wrote the panel name, you had put in another reference plane with a locked dimension to which the panel name is aligned. There are some stages that you have rushed through that, for those of us who are new to Revit get completely confused and lost. Please may you try to explain some of the nitty gritty stuff coz it seems that is where the difference in getting it right and getting lost lies. Thank you.

    • @arielh5704
      @arielh5704 7 лет назад

      Unfortunately I'm not at the place where I can re-do a video I made several years ago, but you do have valid feedback about rushing through. My goal overall was to give framework on how to achieve certain goals, such as aligning with horizontal reference planes, and locking them - and applying those skillsets to all kinds of families. As you play around with these functions, you will begin to get a feel for how you like to build them. There are many ways to build the same family, and each Reviter works differently. The name is not crucial to building the family, its really an ancillary bonus, so if you can't get it to work, you can leave it out, and it will not adversely affect the functioning of your panel. Thanks for watching! and I wish you luck.

    • @bagsio1
      @bagsio1 7 лет назад

      Probably to late, as you know the answer already, but it looks like she created another ref. plane between Ref level and top of 'gear height', where she locked model text to. then you can for example lock this ref. plane to be in exact dim from top or bottom of panel.

    Hi again Ariel, question...all my parameters are set correctly. however, when I load the panel into a new job file, when I adjust the panel height the panel name does not move with it, therefore, leaving the panel name exactly in the same location. What's going on here?

    • @arielh5704
      @arielh5704 8 лет назад

      Not entirely sure - Its been quite a while since I made this video. However, since the name is just a visual aid for the designer, I don't think that its placement is very important, as it will not print, so it isn't a crucial piece of the family-building process, so you could skip it altogether. you could try building the 3-D text as a separate family, nesting it, and tying it to a dimension/parameter from the reference level (rather than from the top). Good luck!

  • @luvshack018
    @luvshack018 8 лет назад

    ill play around with it. Would it be possible for you to upload a video on how to nest or create cable tray clearance?

    • @arielh5704
      @arielh5704 8 лет назад

      Cable tray is a system family, so it acts differently than discrete families in Revit. You could build a "data device" family and use it as cable tray instead of the built-in cable tray (which acts similarly to duct, conduit & pipe), and nest a clearance zone. However, I think in that particular case I would actually simply make a separate "clearance zone" family (not nested) to use where needed around cable tray. weather or not it is nested, you simply check or uncheck "visible in floorplan" in the visibility settings of Family editor to decide if you want it to show only in elevation or in floorplan and elevation. If you show it in floorplan, it may cover up your actual cable tray, and that would most likely be undesirable.

    • @luvshack018
      @luvshack018 8 лет назад

      Not exactly sure on how to do that. But ill play around with your advice. Thanks again

  • @luvshack018
    @luvshack018 8 лет назад

    Hello, why wont the panel name show up on my floor plan, but it will show on the elevations?

    • @arielh5704
      @arielh5704 8 лет назад

      To get the Panel name to show up in floorplan, you will need to use a tag that queries the panel name parameter. The panel name in 3D that we do here is intentionally made NOT visible in floorplan - only in elevation. It is vertical 3D lettering, so it wouldn't be readable in floorplan anyway. Hope that helps!

  • @luvshack018
    @luvshack018 8 лет назад

    First off thank you for posting these videos, they are great. I was hoping you could help me. After I laid the top clearance zone and set it equal to gear depth, a couple of things happen, one, it does not align directly above the panel and second, it doesn't appear to be the depth of the panel.

    • @arielh5704
      @arielh5704 8 лет назад

      You may need to check a section view (left or right) and use the align tool to align it / lock it to a reference plan so that it is at the correct elevation. As for the depth, maybe check within the nested family that the depth parameter is set up correctly (that the dimension is set to reference planes, and the geometry edges are locked to those reference planes) Hope that helps

    How do you assign the clearance zone to a different layer when exporting to dwg or navisworks so that in BIM coordination meetings the access can be turned on/off by layering?

    • @arielh5704
      @arielh5704 8 лет назад

      +Jason A. Milne Great question. In the manage tab, under object styles, you can create a new sub-category of electrical equipment by pressing "new" button. I generally use something like "no fly zone" or "clearance zones". Then, when you create the geometry, at the bottom of the list in the properties bar, you can assign the 3-D geometry to your new sub-category. This will show up under electrical equipment when you are in project world when you open visibility graphics - where you can turn it off or on in Revit. This is akin to putting it on a separate "layer" that you can turn off in other exports. Hope this helps!

    • @Jason87M
      @Jason87M 8 лет назад

      +Ariel Heintz This helped point me back to the exporting paramaters for .dwg files. Since we created this new sub-category we can now use modify DWG/DXF export setup for the lights from {E-ELEC-EQPM} to say E-ELEC-CLEARANCE. Thanks!
