Jack Johnson - Was an American boxer, who-at the height of the Jim Crow era-became the first African American world heavyweight boxing champion (1908-1915). Johnson went on to become one of the most dominant champions of his time, and remains a significant historical figure in heavyweight boxing history, with his 1910 fight against James J. Jeffries being dubbed the "fight of the century." Johnson was faced with much controversy when he was charged with violating the Mann Act in 1912, even though there was an obvious lack of evidence and the charge was largely racially based. In a documentary about his life, Ken Burns notes that "for more than thirteen years, Jack Johnson was the most famous and the most notorious African-American on Earth".

Jack Johnson had a tactical defensive approach to boxing and the sweet science which was unusual at the time; back then it was all about swarming but Jack J fought with a lot of intelligence. I read an interview with him and he seems like a real nice guy too. He loved to drive his car unsafely fast, and one time a cop pulled him over and gave him a ticket, Johnson handed him a $100 bill and when the cop said he didn't have change for that Johnson told him to keep the change because he was going to drive back the same way.
The Galveston Giant. One of the best Heavyweights of all time!
haNZAgod, Jack was the best my firend. you did him great justice in this video. My top 5 favorite heavyweights are:
5.) Ingemar Johansson (My Favorite)
4.) Jersey Joe Walcott
3.) Joe Louis
2.) Muhammad Ali
1.) Jack Johnson

@@yourdedcat-qr7ln most rate fitz at middle weight 💪🥊 that's where he fought the heavyweights at and where he was best
in terms of skill he wasnt really one of the greats but the time he fought made him one of the impressivest
Damn that was amazing. You really captured his skills and boxing style. Great work!
Glad you like it mate.
His graft is amazing. Not just hard and tough, but had the science to go with it. Revolutionary!
I see lots of Johnson in the likes of Hopkins/Ward today. Stay outside, stay outside, BAM explode and clinch/maul on the inside then exit and repeat. Do you agree?
Way ahead of his time.
Glad to see this man finally got his pardon! He should go down in history as a hero, not a convicted felon.
Any man that fights for his freedom deserves all the respect and admiration
Wow, another gem. I click like before it even starts because I know I'm going to love it. How gutsy was middleweight champ Stanley Ketchel to take the fight to Jack and not go on the back foot, even dropped him for the first time ever. Boy what an era, when giants walked the earth...
Amazing job buddy!
The part where he's knocked down almost looked like he wasn't gonna be able to get up. Him getting back up and destroying his opponent showed his determination and perseverance.
Here's a fun fact @ 3:30 Johnson was wiping a few of Stanley's teeth from his glove! Great video 👍🏽👊🏽💯
I rank him as number just for the time period he fought in. This is the early 1900’s when black men, women and children were lynched for no reason. And he still did what he did without fear. Straight warrior!
You're my favourite boxing montage channel. Love your music choice, your knowledge and passion of the sport as well as the fighters you choose, which come from all eras and divisions. Please keep up the great work mate
Thanks I appreciate that! Glad you enjoy the content
I had to come back to this highlight vid to understand it's true beauty. Finally added to greatest videos!
Boxing has come soooo far it's breath taking to see the sport evolve in so may ways and forms its like watching you're child grow up to be the great son he is today.
Fantastic work Hanza. He was one of a kind for sure. Good choice in music also. A good partnership
Thank you for this superb highlight reel of one of the greatest to ever do it!
Immaculate. Well done, NZA. Like watching Shakespeare strike the pen or Beethoven touch the ivory.
I wish I had lived in his time! An inspiring man!
He and Louis stood more against bigotry then Ali did.
This is my most lovely highlight
great fighter
Thanks man. I definitely gotta sub now
No one performed under more Pressure than Jack Johnson!
beautiful video as always, keep up the good work brother! :)
Wow. The footage ie incredible. This man would have been a great fighter in 2019! You also included several pictures I've never seen before😱. Thanks for this! I recently did a social commentary on Jack Johnson on my channel. So compelled by this story and like what you're doing with your page! New subscriber!🤗
Such a brave soul, way ahead of his time.
I would say ,right in time. Divided America needed someone to come along and change things for better. Jack Johnson changed the phych of the Nation through individual graft and tenacity. He was simply a force nobody could stop and much needed at that time in America. Just amazing ,brilliant and wonderful man.🤩😍😘❤🙏🎩
my favorite part is when Jack Johnson drops Stanley Ketchel, decides nah I ain't done, drags him up to his feet, into the corner...... 1:45
Wanna talk about a man who lived his life fearlessly... Jack Johnson was truly free.
awesome video thanx
great video

Apocalyptica. Nice choice. Beautiful song.
its easy to look at an old film and say Johnson wasn't so great. but being in there with him and fighting him, that's a different story. all the whites in America wanted him beat, and for the longest time, none of them could beat him. if they could have, they certainly would have done it. so obviously, he's greater than you think. furthermore, you never get the sense he's fighting his hardest, except in his last fight when he was 37 and out of shape. he toyed with fighters, and laughed the entire time, and still beat everyone up, while playing around. he toyed with ketchel he entire fight, and as soon as ketchel got fresh, Johnson got up and immediately knocked him out cold. which shows he could have done that at anytime he wanted. his foot was never really on the gas pedal. so most of the film on him only shows him fighting at maybe 40 - 50% of his real ability
archiemoore1 true! he worked himself in sparring to the point that his mind worked on another level compared to the rest of the competition. People forget how much of a game changer he was at the time
He could beat most heavyweights today because foreman used his defensive style against joe frazier such as clinching and grabbing and pushing his opponents arms gloves and shoulders away to defend against punches and it worked
@GustavusAdolphus1 he was good at clinching and defense and could fight for around 40 rounds
If only there was enough film to make defensive highlight on him
THE LEGENDARY ☝🔥
Jack Johnson was a savage. Jim Crow ear never scared him.
The BEST EVER! He suffered the biggest pressure ever stepping in the ring. People were killd everytime he won a fight. He had the best stress ever to enter the ring as beeing black. He came from a poor black family. He overcame his limitations and became the FIRST BLACK CHAMPION OF THE WORLD. He must carry the title of the best ever, as his contribution overcomes time and life!!!
great job.
Good work
fuckin' A man, GOOSEBUMPS, definition of a true warrior,💯
This is one man who does not get enough recognition for his place in history. He wasn't trying to be anything but himself but in doing so was a lightning rod. Also, he liked to physically support his opponents while he kept beating on them, just to prolong his time on stage lol!
I used to bomb people for saying he was in the top 10 heavyweights because I mean look at who he fought...Owen Moran was just not that good, a 5'7, 170 lb, (the shortest and second lightest heavyweight champion of all time) fighter who's name I can't even remember, a drained and ring rusted Jim Jeffries, an inexperienced Joe Jennette, an inexperienced Sam Langford, and an extremely young Sam mcvea. Now I realize he suffered the same fate as two of my favorite champions...Rocky Marciano and John L. Sullivan. He came up in a time when all the champions he could fight were old (Jim and Bob), small, or just not the kind of fighters you think of as boxing greats. He couldn't fight the four black fighters people claim he dodged because they were black and the Jim Jeffries vs Jack Johnson riots are a pretty good reason for why they weren't going to create opportunity for another reigning black champion so they threw both modern contenders and aging relics at him in attempt to dethrone him and none of them were in the least bit effective for a good reason. Jack Johnson makes my top 5 heavyweights now and I'm glad some people view him well for reasons other than just being the first black heavyweight champion.
Super Didou I know that now and that's why despite that same problem with Marciano and Sullivan I still rank them in top 10.
You guys are informative
@@catintheformalattire4274 I agree with Jack Johnson's resume being lacking of prime greats. But imo they all still lose except Langford who developed into a brilliant puncher and trapper. But you just couldn't handle Johnson. I think he's to clever and to hard a puncher for those guys to deal with. Even prime Jim imo would be butchered.
His oponents were not so great but no other black boxer from any other era would of had the balls the balls the change for the title at that time
@@hueyfreeman1983 agreed I watch his fights and realized he was way ahead of his time. People still used the Johnson parry after he died , the right inside uppercut, not to mention johnson in his fight with Willard actually rolled a punch and threw a right hand. Something all modern defensive fighters mastered. His skills are good enough for almost any era imo. Not to mention he learned from Joe choynski who actually drew with Jim Jeff which is good indication to me that he would have whipped him. I would like also to note even tho he didn't fight the best at their best. He still fought men who were hungry for the championship. Every able bodied man who even stood a decent chance was trained and was schooled on how to especially fight Johnson. I don't think there was ever the amount of effort put against Johnson being dethroned as there was with any other boxer.
he was like the 1900s anderson silva.
No. Well maybe. He was a massive weight bully.

How did Jess Willard beat this guy? Did he take a dive?
Johnson was old and had seen better days by the time he fought Willard. He still went 26 rounds though, very impressive.
I wish they would allow arm wrestling and dirty boxing like they used to

I want to love Jack Johnson but I'll cant forgive him betraying Joe louis
What did he do to Louis?
@@brocksimmons345 he helped trained schmelling for their first fight. He was bitter towards Joe Louis because he applied to be in Louis' camp as a trainer but Joe Louis denied him because his main request was that he fire Jack Blackburn ( louis' head trainer). Jack Johnson and Jack Blackburn were bitter rivals
@@alexfizer I really didn't know that, wow. That was pretty classless from Jack Johnson
@@alexfizer Louis didn’t “deny” him Blackburn and Johnson didn’t like each other and it was Blackburn who told Johnson that he wasn’t needed in Louis training sessions if you guys are going to speak on something at least get it right.
Boxing without (color's) borders. This was the Door...
it's crazy how primitive boxing was back then
it's actually pretty high level if you consider the fact that it's totally different rules. look how well he's able to control guys in the clinch and beat them up from there. he's doing shit back then that Jon Jones is using to dominate MMA with today.
There was more grappling. Boxing has been reduced to a game of tag now. The ref doesnt allow fighting as much.
Don’t confuse “primitive” with “complete”.
even though there was a lot of racism against Johnson but a lot of white people was really supporting him more than people not supporting him.
No there wasn't. Times back then were very racist, Johnson didn't have much support at all. What he did was incredible.
Not true at all

Everyone talks about how great this guy was, for being outspoken in his time? Couldn't agree more. For being a boxer, not a chance. He fought mostly guys who were middleweights, he would not fight the top black fighters of his time. Joe C. knocked this bum out and he was a lt heavy. Come on here be objective. JJ not a great fighter, bold fearless without a doubt.
HDVICTORY ford he couldn't fight black fighters nobody wanted to see 2 black fighters fight for the heavyweight championship ho read his book
Who's Joe C?
@@joekavanagh7171 Joe Choynski- A lt Heavy who knocked JJ out cold. JJ often said of JC, he could have beat anyone, And against any hwt- He would pick JC.
Jack Dempsey would've knocked Johnson out inside of 3 rounds.
Chuck Collins Dempsey said that Jack Johnson would beat him...
Nameless Dempesy was just being respectful and humble...Dempsey would have been too vicious for Johnson.
The same Jack Dempsey who wouldn’t fight black fighters? The same Dempsey that said he was afraid of Sam Langford?? FOH man.
@@bossplayermfs5972 Promoters wouldn't let him fight black fighters because of $$$... Dempsey had black sparring partners... Dempsey wasn't scared of anyone.
@@chuckcollins2349 Bullshit, Dempsey was about to fight Joe Jeanette but as soon as he seen that he was a BM he didn’t wanna fight him stop lying on the promoters.
Good for his time (mainly fought lighter men mind). Would have been destroyed by the modern era of heavyweight boxing greats, Ali, Frazier and Foreman.
The sweet science wasn't as developed back then and people were a lot smaller. Most heavyweights in the earlier 1900s wouldn't even make the HW minimum today.
@@pascalscherr5206 Eh I don't know about that most heavyweight now are simply fat and use their head as defense. Guy's in the pass purposely lost a lot of weight to have a more of a lean built or a stocky built which allow them to have overall bettter speed, agility and so on. Ali on at his best was 215 but was a amazing. Foreman was around 220. Let's look at wilder he's around 215 to 220 max and he's knocking guys down who 20 more pounds heavier. He has the lean built he's built like the old school fighters. Jack Johnson was around 190 to 200 pounds he would of done good in any era especially modern day since guys now are too big and heavy.
In a context of fighting within a rule set, none of the more modern fighters would do anything against older boxers.
All of them would get eaten in the clinch.
