    I feel you on the visualisation aspect; houses that are significantly bigger than anything I, or the character, have ever been in - houses that used to be priories/ monasteries - castle-like homes - a 17th century ship: how do you move about on one? How do you move _between_ levels/ decks? A 16th/ 17th century kitchen is *_vastly_* different to any kitchen I've ever been in- so the parts that make it up can be challenging to adjust to/ give the character understanding of.
    I can absolutely understand the warning of not getting bogged down in research before getting the first draft done- *but* there are some aspects where I feel I can't move the story or characters forward, if I can't figure out *_how_* they move about in the spaces they spend their time in...

    • @katgreer6113
      @katgreer6113 6 дней назад +1

      yup. these tiny things are so important and it bothers me when I can't find proper research to help.

      I don't live in England, so I can't go on a tour to understand space/ scope- docos have helped me out, depending on the subject matter- but that's not foolproof...

    Hooray for instincts!
    Themes are many things. They can be the author making a grand speech, but they don't necessarily have to be. I drill down into my stories like a mineshaft, with a general purpose I'm pursuing but an openness to find *anything* of value.
    The beat sheet is a tool I sometimes wish I had the discipline to use. But then again, my story structures have a habit of being more experimental to the point where Save the Cat's structure wouldn't help at all.
    Rock on with the maps, the family trees, etc. etc. Worldbuilding is more fun when you can give it a sort of "database" face, almost as if there are historians among the characters themselves keeping track of the world for you.
    Congrats as well on keeping that part of the process fairly well. A map, for example, would frustrate me if it wasn't drawn to scale. So when I do them, I use Microsoft Paint and crafts the lines down the exact pixel and it ends up taking a very long time.
    Good luck on the legitimacy.

    • @briellewrites
      @briellewrites  2 месяца назад +3

      ooh! I really love that perspective of viewing it like historians among the characters that's fun.

    I relate so much to you saying that you just need a piece of paper and scribble and draw arrows and everything because sometimes you just need to do that. And I also am right there with you with the talking out loud to yourself because I do it all the time, and sometimes it helps to speak it out loud to get a better sense of what you’re trying to figure out.

    • @briellewrites

    8:25 i really recommend Save the cat writes a novel by Jessica Brody! she talks about this, that in a novel the beats are not as clear and fast as in a movie and some things really clicked for me when i read her book, more than with blake snyder's

    In case it helps in something ... I think that you can have the desert in the middle of the two cities taking into account that where I am right now in the Dominican Republic there is something similar to a small desert and where I come from in Venezuela there is also, so I think you can have a small desert in the middle of those two cities without problem

    You had so many things I have heard and used, but still there’s many things I haven’t done. I haven’t ever read Save the cat but I love to use 3 act story structure with my own adaption, meaning that when it has 16 plot points, each plot point gets 2 chapters or I divide it with my main characters. ❤

      @@briellewrites I'd have to open it again to find out. I think I imported my document from Word, but the chapters weren't broken up properly or something. It did something weird. but I don't remember exactly what it was. I just remember searching for videos to help and not having the same results lol. Maybe I need to just start my next project on there from scratch instead of trying to import an existing document.
      But I'd for sure watch a tutorial video if you posted one lol
