Welcome to another video! This is a particularly special one 😭
Many of you have been following along with the 'write a novel with me' vlogs. It's been incredibly heartwarming to see how invested you've all become in Project Tea Cup. This novel means so much to me. I've worked SO INCREDIBLY hard on it, and on all of my writing work leading up to this. I'm still in shock that I got a literary agent 😭
I'm still in shock that my querying journey is done. When December came around, I really did think that Project Tea Cup was dead. I thought that I would have to go back to the drawing board and make something new and try again in two years’ time. That first week of December, when the flurry of attention started rushing in is probably one of the most surreal weeks of my life. To have gone from such profound silence for months, to suddenly LOADS of emails was just amazing. I hope you enjoy this very candid, very earnest video! There was so much I had to cut out for the sake of brevity, and it still ended up being just about 40 minutes long hahah. If you've ever wanted a documentary length video about querying, I suppose, HERE YOU GO~
Take care everyone! Thank you so incredibly much for being here. I'm so, so excited for 2024 and for Draft 6 of Project Tea Cup and to begin the submission process at some point in the future 💛😊

Thank you so much for being a part of this journey!! 😭💛💛 This was a huge video to make, and I really hope you like it. I also wanted to thank a few beautiful people who helped me with this.
Namely, Jen Campbell who not only proofed my entire submission package in late November when I was spiralling about my many rejections but who also coached me through the choosing of my agent when I was, again, spiralling 😅 Her advice was invaluable, and I'm so indebted to her! Jen's channel: @jenvcampbell
I also want to thank Lucy Richardson, who was going through her own querying journey at the same time as me. I'm so excited for her (she received representation a week or two before I did), and she was incredibly supportive! Lucy's channel: @thebookbelle
Of course, I want to thank Tyler for being wonderful, always, but particularly for building me a PC strong enough to render this monster video, which had over 12 hours of raw footage and took at least 45 hours to edit. It only crashed once while rendering 💛

May I ask you a question? Do you have to meet with agents before they will take you on? As a mother with a young one, super shy and not just a touch of social anxiety and a hearing problem that makes phone calls impossible, I would find it nigh on impossible 🙈

I was cheering aloud in your video. I knew agent 3 would be the one, just an inner feeling, when the video showed how happy you looked while talking to her. And I am so glad you shared your journey with us, because as a writer myself, it has helped immensely in knowing what to expect and the patience it requires. 💖 I hope everything comes together soon. I'll buy your book when it comes out, I hope it gets to India!

Been a subscriber of yours for a while and I’ve seen you go through the transition from a full-time job to being self-employed, publishing A Year in Tokyo, and the writing process for Project Teacup which is a challenging journey on its own. Throughout all of this, your heart, optimism, and genuine passion for storytelling is what completely endeared you to me and made me your cheerleader. So very excited for you. Dearest Christy, I'm so thrilled for you! I could definitely tell the difference in your face when you were first talking to Bailey. Working with an agent will be challenging but ultimately it's going to be a relationship of trust, and you looked like you felt you were in a safe place when talking to her. That's huge. Please remember this very thing always: there is a difference between making compromises, and feeling compromised. The agent that asked you to change the crux of what you loved about the story and the characters' relationships... I think that very much jumps from the territory of "making compromises" (which you might very well do with other agents with reasonable requests) and into the territory of "feeling fundamentally compromised" (which would be a deal-breaker, pulling the hearth out of the story's house). Asking you to add in a romance plot very much reflects the current trends, and over 2023 Romantasy as a genre was huge, so they're looking at what's going to sell. But trends come and go. I feel like a romantasy could almost make a novel dated, which could be at odds with the more 1920's-vibe of your novel that you worked so hard to create. Bailey clearly believes that your work can stand on its own two feet without those feet having to do a coordinated dance for a tiktok/booktok trend. I'm so proud of you.

I know it's about four months ago, but....
It is so inspiring to hear about your querying process! Thank you for sharing this with us.
I have no experience in querying yet. I'm working on my high fantasy series still :)
As for those first two agents:
    - I felt like they wanted to change your book to something different that is not your story anymore. Adding in a romance plot once the book is already finished?...
    - With the third agent you really looked different! That joy on your face after the offer of representation actually brought tears to my eyes! It was so great to hear you got the opposite as to what you expected!
    - It's great that agent 4 also was much more in line with your ideas for your book.
Congratulations with your agent! It sounds like Bailey is THE perfect agent for you! I'm really happy for you

Oh my gosh!😭 Ok, first of all, I only semi-recently started following your journey in writing your novel, and I haven't even seen it all from beginning to end, but I just have to say this was incredibly heartwarming and emotional to watch. As an artist myself, dreaming of someday publishing my own work, I was close to sobbing watching these last few videos of finishing the book as well as finding your literary agent. What a beautiful and wonderful thing, it filled me with so much joy and happiness on your behalf! Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us, and being so open, honest, vulnerable, and authentic about all of this. Though it's not entirely the same, in December of last year I finalized a massive thesis project for my MFA in visual development for animation that I have spent the last 2 years working on. It became an art book filled with development sketches, designs of characters, and places for my own story/pitch for a 2D feature concept that is so incredibly personal and close to my heart. It was highly inspired by my background, and the movies, books, and artistic aesthetics I loved growing up (amongst them the work of Studio Ghibli) so I understand so well how nerve-wracking it can be to send your work out when it's filled with so much of what is you as a person, to be judged and picked apart before you can find someone who wants to work with you. But it's my belief that if you create genuinely, your art and the stories you tell will always find a place in the right hearts. Thank you so much again for inspiring me, I'm excited to keep following your journey going forward ❤

Thank you so much for documenting this process so well. It's so organized and eye opening to the process of writing. Makes me realize that revisions have to be bread and butter, something I know how to execute, plug away and get done, since revisions come from the self, beta readers and now agents too. I now totally get why this part of the process is not well documented by authors, it being such an emotional roller coaster, but your way of laying it out in such an organized way, really fit in my brain, I get the overall arc of it now, and maybe how to go about it in the professional way you went thru it. I'll be rewatching and taking notes, this part of the process was always so confusing to me.

Okay, I am definitely crying 😢!! Congratulations Christy! This is amazing news and I am so thrilled for you. I know you have been working incredibly hard on this manuscript, and it must feel wonderful to have all of that hard work pay off. Thank you for your generosity in sharing this video on your journey; there are so many aspiring writers out here that will learn from this and be encouraged by your journey. I shared it with members of my writing groups because I think they will really benefit from seeing what this process is like (we are all at different stages of developing our stories). I can't wait to hear more about your book, and to read it one day when it is published (and it will be published)!!!

Congrats! You are a very hard-working, dedicated writer! It is so interesting for me to watch the querying process you are vlogging about here. I'm older, and I can remember doing queries and submissions of manuscripts back in the late 70s and the 80s, and everything back then was sending things off through the mail with self-addressed stamped envelopes (SASE), and then you'd wait for months and months to hear back from anyone, if you did at all. It was like sending your words off into the void. If you did hear back, it was most often a rejection notice and your manuscript back in the stamped envelope you sent them. It sure feels like the dark ages now. The whole process is so much easier and faster with email!
