Wow this young lady has chops. She totally owned Oh Canada. Sung at half-time speed like it was, with such long phrases, she was stunning! And her vibrato control and pitch were immaculate. WHEW! As for any criticism that she "went commercial" for the Olympic tune I wouldn't worry about her turning her back on her jazz roots (Disclosure: I do not know her at all). She has already established herself through jazz and has caught the attention of The Establishment in the business as such.
@thebrewhouse Right now, I think this song isn't just for the Olympics anymore. With what's happening in all parts of the world, from the rebels fighting for freedom in Libya to the earthquake and tsunami disaster in Japan, this is the time we really do need to come together as one.
get your facts straight. richmond oval alone cost close to $200 million. security expenses cost 1 billion, opening ceremony cost $40 million. plus all the other stuff, like ubc arena and curling venue, the over budget olympic village and the like. i am surprised vanoc claimed they have lost only 1 billion dollars.
people are all talking about greece's debt problem while us canadians are enjoying a home brew olympics. apparently, a large portion of greece debt was from the over budget olympics in 04. now the EU is talking about cutting the benefits to the general public in greece while increasing taxes. this ,eans people there have to pay more and get less from the government. same may happen here in canada.

i know that. I have athletic friends and they're always getting injured at high school level, let alone olympic level. yeah it's costs a lot of money that's true and yeah maybe we are getting ripped off, but all I know is that I've enjoyed watching the olympics and those athletes have to make a living too ya know?
@Fabouss her album was released here in the states, it was a marginal success, her style of singing appeals to a very selective audience, she does nothing for me, the same way celine does nothing for you. but i will reiterate... Nikki will never have the vocal abilities and career success that Celine has had, i stand by that comment 100%
@Fabouss let me clarify, i should have been more specific----when Nikki is out of her relm, shes quite marginal/boring...her relm being her jazzy scat singing--ive heard her version of the National Anthem--she started out ok, but failed on the high notes----the song was clearly out of her range-----this song "I Believe" could have been sung by anyone, because she sounds like anyone--- she brings nothing new to the table, to coin a phrase

we're just proud that the olympics are in canada and that we're doing so well. we're not forcing any patriotic garbage on anyone.

no. the only olympics where the organizers earned money are all in the united states. all the other ones lost money. world cup is a different story.
