I've seen just about every type that you mentioned. Many soldiers are a combination of the types that you mentioned as well. I've seen outstanding soldiers that became disgruntled over time, mainly due to being surrounded by compulsive ass kissers.
I was a highly motivated,300+pt score,squared away soldier back in the mid 90's.I arrived at ft Stewart and I was shocked at the conditions of everything!The barracks were filthy,3 to a room.roaches and filth.The difac food was disgusting except for breakfast so you had to eat Popeyes or Bk everyday.I was a 92y and got stuck in 2/7 inf bt s4.I had an e-6 2 yrs from retirement who was a real miserable pos.Most soldiers where I was did their time and ets or got discharge or went awol.Everyone wanted out of that place who lived on post.I couldn't believe we treated our soldiers that way back then.

I remember a soldier in our unit that was ALWAYS broke. He would blow his money on stupid shit but never had money to eat, smoke or drink. Always needed money for gas. We were given sep rats (was $180/m) because we didnt get chow hall for free. He got busted a few times for sneaking a free meal. But his highly tuned car BMW M was always prestine, he had wall to wall video games and wore high end designer civies. The BN CMDR finally confronted him and said he either managed his money or the rest of his career would suck. We were ordered to stop giving him money and he was given chow hall privileges. He ended up selling his car and became a barracks rat.
Asking out curiosity, did you ever find out what ever else happened to him? Like anything new when you got transferred to a different unit/ duty station or when you got out of the army?
Sometimes it's a vicious cycle. Financial Issues Soldiers become Barracks Rats > Barracks Rats become Alcoholic Soldiers > Alcoholic Soldiers become Financial Issues Soldiers. You have to be willing to quit at least one of these faults to resolve the other 2. Even if you don't drink you can get caught in this. I took a 2nd job at the Dust Bowl (a Shoppette at Fort Irwin that caters to the rotational troops) and then I had more money which paid my credit card debt, and less time for drinking. It took a while, but I broke the cycle.
My brother is at basic training right now and everyone loves him. Even the MIT wife texted my mother. My brother was 3 sit ups away so he has to do another week but the group loved him so much they made a pack and said they would finish off strong for him. He was able to get those three sit ups.
Marine here and we had the exact same types. During my six years, four as an NCO, and at one time or another I had at least one of each in my section. The stinky ones ticked me off most. I always thought hey didn't respect themselves and worse, the didn't respect their platoon mates.

After shore duty I went back to sea duty and spent a lot of money in Liberty ports . When I EAOSed I had a Jeep paid off , several guns , cashed out 90 days unpaid leave time , and had sent a ton of treasures home to my family . I had given my mom several pieces of gold jewelry from the Persian Gulf, some Australian opals , an inlaid wooden jewelry box from Sorento Italy , and a silk kimono from Japan .
I was a semi barracks rat for my two weeks as a USAR Senior NCO in the Guardrail IV unit at Stuttgart Army Air Field. I say Semi because I was doing double shifts and did not take a day off. I was having a blast doing my job, and wasn't interested at all in German sights or activiies. I never went off base. I assumed correctly that it would be my last chance to work real live mission. During my 3 years in Bangkok I was hardly a barracks rat as I seldom ever slept on base.
I spent 15 months at Sattaheip, rarely slept on base. Most weekends my Thai girlfriend had our bags pack when I got off work at 1700hrs and we were going to the beach or some place.
AFN used to show Army commercials about this kind of thing. One that was shown particularly often was the financial-issues soldier. In the commercial, a private is called in to the First Sergeant's office and gets chewed out over his financial situation. Then, the private smarts off at the First Sergeant by stating 'there's no such thing as debtor's prison', whereupon the 1SGT loudly asks the private how he'd like to spend the rest of his enlistment washing trucks. The private quickly responds that he'll take care of things immediately!
I'm stationed in New York as a reservist and I learned to always keep myself busy in the army. It's better to invest in yourself so you can take care of your family. That's what it's all about. The army opens up a lot of doors because they pay you to go to school it's awesome.
I was the barracks rat. I mean technically I wasn't, since the definition is one that prefers to stay in the barracks. I was in the Marine Corps, and at A-school and C-school (airwing side of the corps) you are only allowed off base with a "liberty buddy". Then my first fleet duty station was in Iwakuni, Japan, and that base also had a "liberty buddy" policy; thankfully you are allowed to leave station by yourself during leave, so I did get to explore Japan. I also went to a Navy base (NAF Atsugi) for some extra schooling and I was allowed to go off base solo any day of the week.. that was amazing. When I came back to Iwakuni, I somehow ended up with my own room as a Lance Corporal so I just chilled in my room, went to work, went to the gym. I grew up neglected in my early childhood then went into foster care; I also had social anxiety disorder. I was that quiet somewhat awkward kid, so I didn't make any close friends. Because of the "liberty buddy" policy I felt stranded on station. I'm also introverted, so I really need some alone time, and that is hella hard with barrack roommates. Some of my fellow Marines (and Staff) would talk shit about me, either behind back or to my face, but some of my fellow Marines were cool. These days I'm doing a LOT better, I go hiking and fly an Ultralight aircraft.
I was the financial issues soldier (#4). Spent money going out on the weekends and eating out until I was broke and had to eat in the mess hall. At least I was smart enough to put money aside for a hair cut. As far as guessing about you, my two guesses would be a little bit of #3 and #5. Just my guess

I'd def have to say as a parent that my biggest fear would be the alcoholism... Runs in the fam kinda thing. But I'm super proud of both of them. So I’m at Fort Bliss. And my problem is that when I do cook, I have this person who comes over to get a fork because he’s too lazy to buy utensils or spend his money on alcohol or something stupid. I feel offended because then he questions why I clean or cook. Well because I was raised to do my own things.
As an ASA Vet I can confirm we had a few were true alcoholics, but mostly we were just drunks. As far as age, the legal drinking age off base in Bangkok, was if you had money you were of age. At the EM or NCO club it was 18, but due to the long AIT training tiimes for our MOS's none were not 18 or 19 when they arrived at their first duty station.
Definitely barracks rat soldier only while I was on rotation in Korea. But for most of the time I was in I guess ninja would best describe me and no not the shamming type just the type that fades into the background only to have others realize that I've been there with them the entire time, always found it funny when they get surprised when I've been there. Did have a soldier who was number 4 while I was stationed in Korea (not rotation)...asked a lot of soldiers from the company for money because he'd be out partying pretty much every night...did talk to him to watch his spending habits but it didn't get through to him even when he left for Drum. Didn't find out until I met my other soldier from Korea in my next duty station(both of us had the same duty station but different units)...while on CQ he had used the master key to go into the previous soldier's room and took his PS4 for payment because he'd borrowed $800+ from him...don't know if it was right or wrong...

In my barracks days, I was a bit of a barracks rat. I got out some but also wanted to make my room an enjoyable place. I did make as enjoyable as I could but looking back at those times, I probably should have gotten out a bit more.
Was going Army but the office was closed. Somehow someway the Marines smelled me and my brother, hitting us with the “You guys have an appointment with the Army? Why not step into our office?” 😂 My ass is introverted as hell plus my schedule is gym 50% of the time and the other 50% gaming so I’m gonna be probably the barracks rat but hitting the gym religiously 💪
I did the barracks thing when I needed some quiet in between times when we figured out what we were doing .I never really complained I understood what the Army was .I worked in the motor pool on Fridays one half left for a class in theorning other half in afternoon.I was new and asked which class I needed to attend..Then after they were done laughing I found. out it was a alcohol and drug abuse class .I never did get to go .
Would that make the drunken, dirty, disgruntled, poverty-stricken barracks rat the worst sort? All of these will feed into each other. Too much alcohol, no money. Dirty and disgruntled--can wind up with no money because of Article 15 fines. Stuck in the barracks because every penny either wound up in the Class Six for booze or paying fines (and not getting promoted). Being disgruntled because broke all of the time and in constant trouble. Can't get cleaned up because of no money. Things can snowball in a hurry, and it affects both the flawed individual and the rest of the unit.
Definitely was a pay check to pay check guy at one point, Tho not the extreme type. Bought a new car but paid in full. Bought an expensive phone but also paid in full. I hate monthly payments.

Once a soldier leaves basic training and there are no drill sergeants to get on his/her case, many soldiers fall right back into their old habits. Sometimes they get even worse.
I was all 5 of these in ait got an a15 then my squad leader took me under her wing made me high speed also kitty motivator and in a month I got promoted and made pg student leadership were I would smoke us in cadence so I would also push but then she asked me to do something I wasn't comfortable with so I broke up with her... I am a dumb ass pvt for thinking I could just dump her she's my squad leader, ruined my life

What kinda army were you in? I was in the Army and was many of what you say dont-be,,, in our army the Army washed all our clothes and we ate at a free resturant. We slept 8 dudes in the same room and we just needed to keep our shoes pollisehd, metal box and bed tidy... all rest were taken care of. After shooting we had to clean our rifles with fat greeze... no other cleaning... supposed we were spoiled with officers baby sitting us. US army seems to be the real deal much tougher.

How does #5 exist? I thought they learn that at basic training to not be that soldier. Especially laundry that is a soldiers responsibility to do.

What kinda army were you in? I was in the Army and was many of what you say dont-be,,, in our army the Army washed all our clothes and we ate at a free resturant. We slept 8 dudes in the same room and we just needed to keep our shoes pollisehd, metal box and bed tidy... all rest were taken care of. After shooting we had to clean our rifles with fat greeze... no other cleaning... supposed we were spoiled with officers baby sitting us. US army seems to be the real deal much tougher.
