The song, written by songwriter B. A. Robertson and Mike Rutherford, was inspired by Mike and B.A. realizing their fathers had died around the same time (Robertson's 11 days before his son was born), and they later learned singer Paul Carrack's father had died when he was young (11), as well. The video was filmed in October 1988 and features Mike Rutherford with his then-eight-year-old son, Tom. The naval officer in the photo near the beginning is Mike's father Bill Rutherford, who was Gunnery Officer of HMS Revenge in 1940, and was a staff gunnery specialist in King George V in the final Bismarck battle.
This was real life for us. My father-in-law died in January and our daughter was born in September. This song hit my husband pretty hard. He and his dad had finally gotten to a good place, and he died in his sleep
Always look forward to your comments. Always on the money and so thoughtful. This was indeed a huge song of the 80s and a story of what really counts or matters in life. Love and kindness....always trumps every material thing man has to offer...Amen. Thanks again. Loved it.
I love this song and the amazing vocals of Paul Carrack. I also love that they used a choir made up from middle aged people. They're the generation to whom the song was meant for. Beautiful. 🙋♂
This song was played at my stepson's funeral after he died at age 23 in a car crash. He and his Dad, my husband, had a strained relationship. There was not a dry eye in the place. It was like this song was written just for them.
Rutherford. Ruth (vowel) pronounced as in Rough. Lovely analysis. You may have missed that singer sang as a new father picking up the “father” spirit from his deceased father regarding his young child.
I was privileged to be at the bedside of my partner, his youngest daughter was there too and his eldest daughter with her daughter were with us via Facetime from Scotland. He left us gently, he was ready to go and we all had the chance to be sure he knew we all cherished our time with him. I will treasure that time, we'd been together 21 years, he'd been a widower for 7 years when we got together, we never married or even lived together yet his family treated me as if we did, letting me share those last precious moments was an honour.
Amen bruh! SAY IT LOUD, SAY IT CLEAR! I love you! Tell 'em every time, so thankful I have the memory of saying those as my last words to my mom before she was killed in an auto accident a few hours later 😢You just never know...
This song reminds me of my wife's brother and mother. We were getting married in June of 89 but my friend and soon to be my brother in-law died in January of 89 at the age of 22 from a heart attack. He was healthy as an ox but his heart had some kind of disease and no one new it not even him. He was dead before he hit the floor at his friends house, the paramedics or doctors couldn't do anything and my mother in-law was a Nurse at the hospital he was rushed to. My mother in-law always thought she should have seen the signs and blamed herself but there were no signs. We decided to go on with the wedding and we talked about David a lot that day and drank in his honor. Months later I was driving with my mother in-law and this song came on the radio and I noticed she was crying so I asked her if she was ok and she said that the song reminded her of David 😢 She has passed away but every time I hear this song I think of his smile and the great guy he was and how lucky I was to have such a sweet and kind mother in-law. Thank you for sharing!
I thank this song for reuniting me with my dad several years ago. My dad & I never got along when I was growing up and into my adulthood. After hearing this song I finally got over being so idiotic and petulant about our situation that my dad & I reconciled, a year before his death. Yes it's an 80s song, but an 80s song with a soul. Thanks for your reaction.
if you would have opened your eyes u would have seen the first choir were kids singing and the 2nd time around the choir were adults .......so they were kind of bridging the gap between both generations
Beautiful reaction bro ! Like the fact that as opposed to other YT reaction folks, you 1- don’t stop the vid to each 10 secs ; 2- took the time to do some research before reaction. As to this masterpiece of a song: it hits harder and harder as one gets old. Now that I’m a dad myself, I just cannot listen to it without tears.
This did help me and my husband stop being such self involved yuppie jerks and involve our dads more in our adult lives. Moms come easy. Who doesnt love and call their mom? But keeping a good open relationship with your dad took work. I think because so much of the relationship was transactional or based on dad providing rather than just dad loving in all the ways that comes across.
Just wish the sentiments expressed in this song could be applied to our divided political country and help people realize that shouting and accusing get us nowhere. Just listen and be civil because we really have a lot in common.
Mike + The Mechanics was made up of guys from other bands when they weren’t touring. A side gig. To see them in their main bands, look for Squeeze Tempted to see Carrack sing. And Mike, by far the most famous in the group, was the guitar player in Genesis. He’s the dad in the video. Look for any Genesis song. They were big on instrumentals that showcased each of the three members. Try Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea. The first part is a good song and the second part is instrumental so you can see Mike wail.
This song makes me emotional.
“You can listen as well as you hear” such profound lyrics
Just makes me cry, every time. It is just so true.
Miss you Dad and Mom. You left us too early.
The song is stunning! 😢😢

Paul care ek , he was in many bands and is known for having sung multiple hits with different bands.
It's not about the music but the lyrics that transcends time
The tragedy of humanity. Why are we so complicated? LOVE and Forgiveness and moving on is a path forward.
Just saw the movie Exhibiting Forgiveness. Hard to watch but important to see.

I believe that you felt your grandmother's spirit with you - how beautiful

We should never have regrets and well done telling your loved ones you love them.
Tito, grab me a tissue
We will always feel like we don’t have enough time with our family ❤

Without Christ, this will never happen. Him first, then everything else falls into place.

But it wasn't enough...
I personally prefer dated songs to the cr*p we get today.
I'm a white male with 20,569 songs on my PC and not one of them is from Mike & The Mechanics.
Add it then it be 270. Nice round number
@@isebmazo2140 I only add songs that I like. I'm not too fond of this one.
Do your research before you do the reaction.
U r dated
