My dad died earlier this summer. I've known this song since I was a teenager and have always been moved by it. In fact, it is precisely because of this song that I was able to have a beautiful relationship with my dad, and did get to say all the things I wanted to say to him before he died. It meant the world to me.
And the lead singer is Paul Carrack from the band Squeeze, and The Bleeding Heart Band which often worked with Roger Waters of Pink Floyd during his solo career.
I didn't speak to my father for 5 years prior to his death. We had a falling out. Then one day, i called him. He was very sick and was dying. We talked for about 10 minutes. Said our good byes. I called him 2 weeks later and said everyrhing i needed to. Told him nothing matters and that i loved him. He died 3 days later. All thise years i wasted being angry. Id give anything to have 5 minutes with him again. Buckaroo
On the night I lost my father, I was of course a mess trying to figure out how to handle my grief. I put on 80s music. I jokingly said to myself, I am taking a chance that this song will come on. And sure enough within 20 minutes it came on. I was sobbing, but I needed to hear it. It helped me cope in that moment.
I'm 58 now and I cannot listen to this song without shedding a few tears. My dad and I were very close but he grew very ill quickly 10 years ago. He battled for a while and I thought he was doing better. But, my mom called me 6:30 one morning and found him dead outside from a self inflicted gun shot to his heart. He couldn't handle the pain; knowing he was not going to get better; and never wanted to burden anyone to care for him. I never got to say goodbye to him and man does it hurt. If there's anyone reading this and holding a grudge with your parent; sibling or close friend, get over it and make up. Love your show Stacey!
You are so right. After my Dad died, some of my brothers and sisters began to fall out. Even me with a sister. Even though I felt betrayed, I decided to give it to GOD and made peace with my sister and she did the same. One brother of ours can't bring himself to forgiveness especially towards my sister. The anger eats him up. I pray for him. GOD bless you. Have faith one day that our CREATOR will reunite you and your Dad.
The singer is Paul Carrack. Mike Rutherford (Genesis) is the man with long hair and a beard who, in the video, walks hand in hand with his young son. Mike Rutherford co-wrote the lyrics with Brian Alexander Robertson. The song won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically in 1989, and was nominated for four Grammy Awards in 1990, including Record and Song of the Year, as well as Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Best Videos. In 1996, famed composer Burt Bacharach said that the song was one of the greatest lyrics of the past decade. "Silent Running" and "All I Need Is a Miracle", from the 1985 self-titled debut album, were also quite successful, although I really like "You Are the One". From the 1988 album "Living Years", in addition to this song, I would also recommend "Nobody's Perfect", "Beautiful Day" and "Why Me?", although one of my favorites from a musical/instrumental point of view is "Don't".
You've got me bawling with this one, Stacy. 3 months ago today, my younger brother turned 60. On Sunday, my sisters and I scattered his ashes to the ocean where spent our childhood. We shared a room while growing up. We laughed and fought. We got into trouble together. We shared our love of music, introducing each other to new bands and styles. All I can say is that we should never miss an opportunity to make time for the people we love. Never miss an opportunity to say "I love you".
My dad was a a tough person who was old school, and just before he died, all 6 of his kids had a chance to Have their last talk with him. I was last and my dad and I fought a lot, and I opened up to him, and at the very end, we settled many issues, without and shouting, rather both of us showed our love to each other. All of our stupid BS was resolved, and we made peace which made both of us felt pure love, and believe me, it was very important to both of us. TALK to your loved ones, and stay humble, and you will be uplifted. I miss both of my parents, and that last talk was beyond important. God bless anyone who need to start the conversation, and it will heal you heart and soul. Best wishes to anyone who needs to do this. ❤️❤️
"I wasn't there that morning when my father passed away..." This killing me every time I hear it.... and I listen to it for like 30 years, and it still does... shields down, direct impact. These lyrics are so meaningful, and so important.
Well, you got me now! "The Living Years" by Mike + The Mechanics is a song that always brings tears to my eyes. It reminds me of my incredible father, who has been my rock through the good and bad times. His unwavering support and love have shaped me into who I am today. Every time I hear this song, it serves as a powerful reminder to cherish every moment with him and to be the best son I can be, just as he has been the best father to me, although nobody is perfect. This song is a beautiful tribute to the importance of expressing our love and gratitude while we still have the chance. Say "I love you" today, because maybe tomorrow can be too late! Thank you, Stacey, again!!!
I lost my brother November 27th 2023 I lost my father June 23 2024 My mother has dementia and doesn’t recognize me sometimes. Other times she’s asking where my brother and her husband are…. Saturday Sept 14th my 14 year old chihuahua passed away This song makes me grateful there was no riff in our relationships. I can’t imagine adding guilt on top of my grief
That's how my 90 year old grandmother is. She doesn't recognize my mother most days. I know I'm gonna regret it but I don't have the heart to see her like that. I want to remember her how she was a year ago. Not how she is now.
You can add the independent works by Anthony Phillips, Steve Hackett, Phil Collins and Tony Banks to the list as well. They all had their genesis from Genesis.
Once again a wonderful reaction! This song came out 3 years after I lost my father. I had no regrets but it made me very nostalgic and touched me. Thank you for this song. I still get emotional almost every time I hear this. I have loved all of your reactions and always look forward to the next. 🥰
This is such a great song and I love Mike Rutherford and he’s a member of one of my favorite all time bands Genesis with Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel. This song hits you straight in the feels.
A heartfelt and beautiful reaction to this song Stacey. This one gets to me every time, even though I lost my parents in the 1980's. It does strike a chord with me, as we don't say the important things to our parents sometimes when we are young adults. And then in the blink of an eye it's too late. Thanks. ❤ 🇬🇧
Thank you for listening to the message that was sung in the song and you definitely have a heart of gold. Too much of everything in the last 25 years has been sugar coated and made as the new truth. Take a hammer to the sugar coating and just stay blunt truthful loving and caring stand up straight remember you are worth it.
Until two months ago, for me, this was "just" a beautiful song with beautiful lyrics and carefully arranged music; I bought the album on vinyl as soon as it came out, and a few years later, in 1996, I also bought it on CD in Manhattan, New York, in that five-story store that I don't think exists anymore.. Since last July, when my mother passed away, the song has taken on another meaning. Inside me, in addition to the natural melancholy, there remains a slight sense of guilt because to convince her to be admitted to hospital I had assured her that I would not let her die in a hospital bed but, with a clear head and reasoning rationally, when her kidneys and heart "gave up", if she had been at home without treatment and "pain therapies" she would have suffered much more. The day they started with sedation, forced hydration and morphine, she was still mentally clear and, when she saw and heard me, she held my hand and said: "Mom's love, you are here" and I replied: "Of corse Mom, I'm here and I will not let you go away", even though she was aware of what was happening. Her last words and her look remain a comfort to me but, more than anything, what can really put my conscience and soul at peace is having shown her and made her feel my affection and my love throughout her life, even if there were discussions and some arguments, as I think is normal in any family and in any parent/child relationship. You gave me life, the most precious gift, and unconditional love: "I love you mommy!" ❤❤❤❤
This song has always been a very touching, and loving song that speaks so much truth! It's one that everyone should hear and take in for some self-examination, IMHO.
It’s a double edged sword really loving a parent, it’s incredibly painful when they die but you had their love all your life. My dad just died aged 93 and the man was incapable of love so his funeral on Tuesday will just be a procedure for tying up loose ends….I shall not mourn or miss him, in emotional terms, I get off lightly.
It hits even harder when you are older and your parents are gone. No matter how much you've said you feel like you've never said enough. In my case not even close to enough and therein lies the seeds of regret.
I am very glad you did this one thanks and yes I agree say what you have to say to your loved ones now because we arent promised tomorrow I had to learn that the hard way and regret on top of grief is not an easy road.
I was fortunate to work with my Dad. We butted heads at times but it was with love. I was with him and my Mom at the hospital when he passed and had to tell the doctors and nurses at the hospital to stop trying to resuscitate him. It was the toughest thing I’ve ever done. Carpe Diem.
Seen mike many times in Genesis, GENESIS WHEN IN ROME is a great concert Stacey to have a look at HOME BY THE SEA, LOS ENDOS, DOMINO, great tracks and definitely worth a reaction Stacey.
This song has always been a bittersweet punch in the gut for me. It may be hard to rebuild bridges that may have been burned, but it's even harder to live with things the way you left them in the name of pride.
Thanks for reacting to this song! I haven't heard this song in at least 20 years and it just reminds me of all the great songs that I grew up on. Thank you Stacey!
I'm a child of divorce, born in Illinois in the mid 70's and was always close with my dad until 1987 when I moved to south Florida. our weekly father son time was cut to school holidays. then this song came out in my early high school days and made such an impact . there were things missed "like my graduation" and a change in point of view of people " we came from a small rural farm community to the cultural melting pot of Broward County. my dad was a man of few words throughout his life, and before he passed in 2016 there were still conversations we needed to, but hadn't had. the regrets I have had diminished. but this song stirrs up thoughts of what should have been. but also brings forward the fond memories I have with him.
I can't listen to this song anymore without crying. Not only am I too late, having lost my father, no one told me about it until well after. My advice, don't leave things. It will hurt worse.
I was about fifteen or sixteen when this song came out and it pointed out that the generational divide applies to everyone, not just me, and that I shouldn't let it become a problem. I lost my dad ten years ago but, unlike in this story, I got to be there when he passed away. I got the opportunity to tell him that I love him and to thank him for everything he did for me. He was also the first person I told that I was going to ask my now wife to marry me. I will forever be grateful that I had that opportunity. This song always brings me to tears because of what it means to me.
So nice to see you are emotioned by this new music for you. We...the 'old music people' ... than realize how blessed we were to witness this for years and years... thank you Stacey for giving us this new emotion ❤
Great reaction Stacey! If there is any 'estrangement' within a family, especially with parents, this one hits deep! It's really a call to say time is too short to let allow a wedge to drive us apart...because some day, it will be too late to make amends. There is nothing more expensive than regret. Wish my eldest sister would realize that...she's ostracized herself from the family. Wasn't at my wedding, didn't attend my grandmother or mother's funerals, doesn't know her nephews or nieces. It's sad really. So for me, this song hits hard...and did for my mom & dad too.
The song was inspired by Mike Rutherford (lead guitarist here and for Genesis) and songwriter B. A. Robertson realizing their fathers had died around the same time (Robertson's 11 days before B. A.'s son was born), and they later learned singer Paul Carrack's father had died when he was young (11), as well. The video was released January 1989.
Saw them live in Manchester UK around 1995? They were supported by 'The Swans' (Bell & Wade ) who were also superb! Fantastic concert all round. Will never forget both bands.
When this song came out i didn't really get it. Well i did but not to the extent i do now. Spent the last 19 years wishing i'd said things i never got to say. Trust me, say what you need to say because forever not being able to is a long time.
@@TheCornishCockney Oh dear someone hasn't been doing their homework - Paul Carrack was a keyboard / 'piano player in Roxy Music for a while and was also in Squeeze after Jools Holland left the band!!
And don't forget he toured with Roger Waters as part of his Bleeding heart band on the Radio Kaos tour and also the awesome performance he gave singing " Hey You " at the " Live in Berlin " concert ❤
"blunt, but beautiful..." you said it, Stacey. Another excellent choice of music; a song with more just any old shallow message. I your admire your taste in music!
Hi, for info Mike is Mike Rutherford, the lead guitarist from the band Genesis. He is playing the guitar on this track. This was his solo project away from Genesis. He had more than one singer in this project.
I take this song to be about setting aside difference of opinion and saying what really matters in your relationship with your parent(s). Its not about saying what you want or what you feel compelled to say in defense of your position on whatever the matter might be. It is to set it aside and to simply say "we don't agree, dad" but I love you anyhow. At some future, indeterminant point you might find yourself thinking "dad wasn't all wrong" and "I wasn't all in the right" and really he (dad) just wanted to give me the benefit of his experience - to share his wisdom with me his son...which in itself is an act of love.
The story behind the song is two of the writer both lost their father around the same time. The one songwriter then has a baby l after that year and knowing his baby would never know his grandfather led to the lyrics
Such a great song... Paul Carrack and that vocal just gets me every time... definitely hits harder if you've last your father or really any parent or person that help raised or mentor you and maybe had unsaid things...
Genesis were/are a remarkable band. Their 5 key members not only steered genesis through a remarkably successful career, but all had success as solo Artists. The first to jump ship was lead vocalist, songwriter and flower, Peter Gabriel, he of Sledgehammer fame. Then Lead Guitarist Steve Hackett. He remained successful but only really as a Prog Rock album artist. Going to see him in November. You know Phil Collins, drummer and lead vocalist ran two parallel careers, both enormously successful. Mike Rutherford, Bass, Lead, Rhythm, of Mike And The Mechanics, ran two parallel careers having some big hits as MATM, the Living years of which is the biggest. He co wrote Living Years and Follow You follow Me, a Genesis song you may like to take a listen to. Seeing them twice next year. Finally Tony Banks, Keyboardist extraordinaire, who's solo career never really took off like the others. Oddly enough it is his writes/cowrites, I like best in Genesis. That Stacey, is where Mr 'Mike' Rutherford has been hanging around these last 55 odd years. Another thing, if you do a 'first time' on Follow You Follow Me, listen closely to the rhythm guitar and compare to the living years. Very very similar and impossible not to conclude they were written by the same guy. You will love it.
Thanks for the reaction to this song! To this day, I continue to learn from my dad gone 30 years now. We had it pretty good while he was here, and now I continue to draw on his wisdom and possibly impart it to others. Mike Rutherford, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Steve Hackett all have had fine solo careers during and post Genesis. I do recommend Genesis from the Genesis of Genesis as a fascinating study of the evolution of one of the highly adventurous progressive bands to come out of the UK in the early 70s.
Song prevents me from breathing or swallowing every single time. Involuntary reaction followed by deep thoughts. Bless You and good health to all on board.
Always liked the contrast of the young choir at the beginning and elderly choir coming in later to emphasise the point of time passing. Also the guy at 6:00 with the kid is Mike (Rutherford). The vocalist is Paul Carrack, in case you weren't aware. It's Mike's band but he isn't the guy singing, he's a guitarrist.
My parents were killed in a car accident 20 years ago. I know people whose final words to loved ones were spoken in anger. I am forever grateful that my final words to my father over the phone were "Okay Dad, I have to get back. I love you and give my love to Mom." My son was born about about 16 months later
After Phil Collins' 1981 hit album 'Face Value' it didn't lead to a break-up of the band Genesis, as they continued on to some of their biggest hits together. In the mid '80s though Collins did more and more solo work and Genesis transitioned to a sort of side gig. In the late '80s Genesis bandmates went on to their own side project with Paul Carrack on lead vocals 'Mike and the Mechanics', Mike being Mike Rutherford (guitar and chief writer/founding member). Phil did get together with Mike and Tony Banks (keyboards) for more Genesis here and there but that band sort of faded out. The odd thing is the biggest hits of Genesis came in the '80s after Phil already began a solo career or at least a solo album. So both his and Genesis' most memorable hits are both from around the same period (early and mid '80s) kind of co-existing, which is very rare. Collins continued to play hits from Genesis, like Abacab, in his solo shows until recently. The '80s was such an amazingly rich time in music. So much more than what you will hear on any 'classic rock' radio station. They seem to have lost 99% of the stuff they used to play.
Great reaction. I think the bigger message is that we might not always see eye to eye with loved ones but to not let it ruin the relationship and to just wait and it may have a new perspective on a different day and we’ll all be ok if we just try to see a different perspective
More than the message of telling them what you want before they are gone it’s the message of how perspectives change by generation and age and don’t get to stuck in your position that you can’t listen to the older or younger generations!
Wonderful reaction. As others mentioned, the writer is Mike Rutherford, the guitarist. The sing is Paul Carrack, a wonderful singer and keyboardist. You would enjoy "Tempted " by Squeeze where he is the lead singer.
Before this amazing job of Mike Rutherford and his project called Mike & The Mechanics, just we need to remember that Mike is a main member of Genesis with Tony Banks and Phil Collins; by the way, I suggest you Taken In, Silent Running, All I need is a miracle, and Par Avion, these tracks are included in his first album, enjoy them and I hope listen your reactions about them, regards Stacey, you look beautiful always!!
Like listening to Gilmour your face tells exactly how you feel, there is no hiding your emotions, I suggested this song to you a few months ago, if it helped you to decide to play it im glad. The other I mentioned at the same time was DRIVE by the Cars, but you have to watch the vidoe from LIVE AID 1985. This was a concert for the famine in Africa, this was the song they played to get a reaction from people to donate money, its harrowing, I dont know anyone not in tears watching it, it had the deired effect, the phone lines were jammed with people trying to donate it took me near enough a day to get through. make sure if you listen you have a box of tissues near to hand. Even if you dont comment on it , just watch and listen, Even more powerful than Mike and the mechanics
Mike was the bass player/rhythm guitarist in Genesis. Lead guitarists were first Anthony Phillips and then Steve Hackett (who is one of the best guitarists in the world!)
I hadn't heard this song in many years. It hit me really hard because my dad just passed away and I wasn't there when he died and we didn't see eye to eye. The last time I saw him in person was about 20 years ago.
Lovely reaction. Another song about fathers is James Blunt, "Monsters". Try watching/ listening to that one without tearing up. Much love from England 🏴

My dad just died aged 93 and the man was incapable of love so his funeral on Tuesday will just be a procedure for tying up loose ends….I shall not mourn or miss him, in emotional terms, I get off lightly.
Totally loved this song as a child. Still do.
It hits even harder when you are older and your parents are gone. No matter how much you've said you feel like you've never said enough. In my case not even close to enough and therein lies the seeds of regret.
Genesis, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike & the Mechanics... long line of talented intertwined musicians.
Paul Carrick vocals didn’t hurt!😊
Very truthful and meaningful lyrics that everyone should take on board .
This song/message has gotten even more relevant today with all the divisiveness in politics and social media. Great reaction, again!
Mike Rutherford was the guitarist and the adult with the child in the video. David Carrack was the vocalist.
I am very glad you did this one thanks and yes I agree say what you have to say to your loved ones now because we arent promised tomorrow I had to learn that the hard way and regret on top of grief is not an easy road.
The song gives me goosebumps no matter how many times I hear it
This is one of the best songs of all time.
I never listened to this without my eye's filling with tear's...
I was fortunate to work with my Dad. We butted heads at times but it was with love. I was with him and my Mom at the hospital when he passed and had to tell the doctors and nurses at the hospital to stop trying to resuscitate him. It was the toughest thing I’ve ever done. Carpe Diem.
It was late in the 80s but it was still the 80s. Legendary decade.
Well done Stacey! A very emotional song and you held it together very well.
Side note Mike's is a member of Genesis Phil Colin's.....but u knew that.....right?.....keep pumping out great content stacey.....😊
I had no idea! That’s so cool!
@@StaceyRPGReacts He was the guitarrist/bass player in Genesis, he started Mike + the Mechanics as a separate project while Genesis were on hiatus.
Seen mike many times in Genesis, GENESIS WHEN IN ROME is a great concert Stacey to have a look at HOME BY THE SEA, LOS ENDOS, DOMINO, great tracks and definitely worth a reaction Stacey.
@@StaceyRPGReactsThat's him and his son on the video
Recommend In The Cage medly from Genesis When in Rome concert too
I've said so much more and listened so much more generously, all because of this song.
NO NO , Mike is Mike Rutherford, The Guitarrist of Genesis and Singer is Paul Carrack. Kisses
This song is my nemesis. Kills me each time.
Rather than "say the things you want to say before you die" it's before "they" die.
Beautiful song.
I appreciated your reaction to this. It was genuine and thoughtful. You did justice to the song. Thank you for this.
Nice job keeping it together through the song….tears well up in my eyes whenever I listen to this tune. Great reaction Stacey🫶
This song allways hits me. 😊❤
Saw them do this live at the Illinois State Fair in 1989
Saw them live in Manchester UK around 1995?
They were supported by 'The Swans' (Bell & Wade ) who were also superb! Fantastic concert all round. Will never forget both bands.
This is a beautiful emotional song. Thank you . Cheers from a finn in Sweden.❤ Congrats to 100 000.🎉
When this song came out i didn't really get it. Well i did but not to the extent i do now. Spent the last 19 years wishing i'd said things i never got to say. Trust me, say what you need to say because forever not being able to is a long time.
very true stacey very much so lots love great tune
Beautiful reaction, Stacey!
Mike Rutherford is the guitarist with the beard who was in 'Genesis'. Paul Carrack is the singer who was in 'Roxy Music' & 'Squeeze'
Eh?
He was in neither of those bands.
He started out with Ace ( How Long)
@@TheCornishCockneyhe was in Squeeze, he sang the song Tempted with them.
@@TheCornishCockney Oh dear someone hasn't been doing their homework - Paul Carrack was a keyboard / 'piano player in Roxy Music for a while and was also in Squeeze after Jools Holland left the band!!
And don't forget he toured with Roger Waters as part of his Bleeding heart band on the Radio Kaos tour and also the awesome performance he gave singing " Hey You " at the " Live in Berlin " concert ❤
i have heard this song so many times, it always brings a tear to my eye =/ . keep up the great work please! big love to all people :)
Great reaction to a great band and very beautiful and great song. Hope you have a Great weekend. ⚘️🌹💐
I'm 61 and I thanked the generations befor they made it better for us. The world owes us nothing!
It blew my mind when I found out that the singer is the same one from Squeeze that sang "Tempted."
You took the words out of my mouth,
My parents were killed in a car accident 20 years ago.
I know people whose final words to loved ones were spoken in anger.
I am forever grateful that my final words to my father over the phone were "Okay Dad, I have to get back. I love you and give my love to Mom."
My son was born about about 16 months later
You are amazing. Great reaction to a tough song.
I love your reactions and smile ❤
Love this song, but it hits on a whole different level since I lost my dad in 2006. I tear up every time I hear it.
This was me and my dad. It absolutely wrecks me evrytime I hear it.
Lead vocal Paul Carrack, also had solo career, lead singer in Ace, Squeeze.. and others Im sure. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head.
One of the great bands, very underrated but so many great tracks.
Mike was the lead guitarist for genesis
Later Genesis
Mike was the bass player/rhythm guitarist in Genesis. Lead guitarists were first Anthony Phillips and then Steve Hackett (who is one of the best guitarists in the world!)
I hadn't heard this song in many years. It hit me really hard because my dad just passed away and I wasn't there when he died and we didn't see eye to eye. The last time I saw him in person was about 20 years ago.
Lovely reaction. Another song about fathers is James Blunt, "Monsters". Try watching/ listening to that one without tearing up. Much love from England 🏴
